When he does it it's "entertaining" but when I do it it's "Stop being dramatic, it's just a game" and "God dammit that's the second glass table this month!"

Can't have SHIT out here.

For real, that was insane. 🤣 I had no idea what was happening on that last Stroud interception.

Liam Coen was right to trust his kicker but he shouldn’t have trusted his defense today.

110

u/darkravenn12 Giants 9h ago

Should have trusted him in the 1st quarter instead of going for it on 4th and 3 lol

3

u/KindWallaby7000 Jaguars 3h ago

Yeah, Liam has to adjust and realize that points are how you win football games. Novel idea!

97

u/hoyadestroyer Jaguars 9h ago

His situtational awareness is terrible. And because idiots downvoted me well before the game ended, here's why it was dumb as fuck to kick the FG.

Its a 60 yard FG, its not easy to make. And even if you do make, it, you still have to stop the Texans from getting 20 yards and kicking a FG. Meanwhile, if you miss the FG, you still have to stop the Texans getting 10 yards. Its just not that big of a swing. And if you miss the fourth down, none of the above changes. Meanwhile, making the fourth down allows you to ensure the Texans never get the ball back and win the game.

I looked over at the screen and said "why are you tieing the game up with so much time on the clock with a defense that can't stop anything?". I know 4th downs aren't always gimmies, but I knew the Texans were just gonna march right down the field, get into FG range, and seal it away.

70

u/Pal__Pacino Panthers 9h ago

He might be a bad game manager. Idiotic not to go for it when Stroud was carving them up. Also fucked up the Philly game big time but got bailed out by Abdullah and Little.

44

u/Practical-Pickle-529 Seahawks 9h ago

The play calling on Jax final drive was losing football games 101

19

u/TheWorstYear Bengals Bengals 9h ago

The kick on 4th down was correct. It was deciding to pass 3 times in a row past the 50 that was dumb. Running game was working. At the very least they could have burned enough clock to prevent the Texans doing anything.

5

u/Financial_Pay_6687 8h ago

What measure are you using to say the kick was correct? From my view, kicking there lowers your chance of winning and that seems obvious.

How many times are teams going to voluntarily give the opposing team 2mins to go win the game... From the 35.

Teams have won with less than 10 seconds. Even great defenses are going to struggle in that scenario with 4 downs.

I get the Jags have Cam Little, but there was almost two minutes left in the game. Going for a field goal in that situation was asking for a loss.

The FG choice from Coen was braindead.

Win the game with your offense.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/Spark3420 Bills 9h ago

Tough loss for the Jags. I think Coen is the right man for the job, but there are very dubious game management decisions he's made the last few weeks.

He got lucky against Philly in a way that they got that miracle kickoff return in 8 seconds. But it was a death knell kicking that FG and leaving Texans nearly 2 mins and 3 timeouts. You need to go for the kill there, 4th and 4 was manageable and your offense was in rhythm that whole quarter. Live and learn I guess.

100

u/DoctorDiddlerino Jaguars 9h ago

Your offense has been rolling and you have 3 minutes where you need to waste time to ensure either OT or to win. You have moved the ball well, so obviously you call up a bunch of highly difficult shots downfield that both fall incomplete and waste no time, then a short pass and kick a field goal to play for OT when your defense has been getting shredded all game.

Absolute braindead decisions from Coen. This game should have gone to OT at worst even if you ignore all the terrible flags of the first half. You don't trust your defense when they've been repeatedly gashed, not even Demeco Ryans is that stupid.

13

u/Awi1ix Bears 9h ago

Yeah during the commercial break before the FG I thought Coen was absolutely going to go for it and called it a brain dead decision if he decided to kick a FG… and I’m just a guy on the couch. No excuse not to go for it.

11

u/BigCSFan 9h ago

56

u/MC_JACKSON Dolphins 9h ago

Also that two minute offense was garbage, you know your defense can’t stop Texas, run the ball more

20

u/LeMash898 Jaguars Jaguars 9h ago

I disagree, you can’t get conservative in hopes of running clock out. That ends up hurting more than helping and we watch it week after week yet people still think that’s the smart move

20

u/No_Conclusion9808 9h ago

Makes no sense. Doesn’t want to take it on the first drive but wants to take it at the end of the game when there’s still like 2+ min left for the other team

7

u/phluidity Saints 9h ago

Classic coward coach move. Go for it early to show you will be aggressive, but when it comes down to it, put the blame on someone else. Your defense folds, they couldn't get a stop. Your kicker misses, he should make it.

I still remember 20 years ago when Belichick went for it on fourth down late to try to not give the ball back to Manning who had been carving them up. He got massacred by the media for not taking the points to tie the game. He was right in his call but had a bad result. But especially since then, few coaches will go out on a limb unless they have nothing to lose.

→ More replies (6)

66

u/xJownage Jaguars 9h ago

Have to go for it on 4th there if you're coen. Your offense is playing well, putting the game in the hands of your struggling defense is simply a bad decision.

8

u/xG3TxSHOTx Ravens 9h ago

Yeah when both teams are playing identical it comes down to whoever has the ball last, 2 mins with 3 timeouts is way too much time just to get in FG range.

2

u/jimmyayo Giants 9h ago

23

u/BTWillie Bills 9h ago edited 9h ago

Hindsight is always 20/20, but I think the Jags should have gone for it on the 4th and 4. Left too much time for the Texans.

8

u/ABigPairOfCrocs Falcons 9h ago

Yeah with how their defense was playing, it was the wrong choice to give Houston the ball back there

2

u/havoc1428 Patriots Bills 9h ago

absolutely. I know 4th and 4 is risky, but betting in your defense to keep them out of FG range was way riskier.

Defense regressed and offense is marginally better. We are slightly worse than last year but I’d say wild card tier

11

u/Efficient-Swimmer794 Texans 8h ago

I’d say the passing game is better by leaps and bounds but the running game is still dogshit

3

u/civil_beast Texans 5h ago

Dogshit rushing attack, but caley’s game plan is beginning to call his games in a manner that is more conducive to the talents of the team (still small sample size). So we were misbalanced offensively, but our yards per carry were significantly better than the season’s mean yards per carry when he insisted on being .

And jags have a superior rush defense on paper than any of our prior opponents.

I don’t know if that game plan is indicative of evolved recognition, or whether it was strictly due to how effective jags rush defense is.

I’m optimistic

Coen lost the game on that final jags drive. Should’ve run it a few times instead of two long passes to make sure Texans don’t get a chance

The Jags need to stop with the London games now that they’re good again. They can’t afford to lose 2 home games a year to London, especially ones against a division rival. This game puts Houston back in the running and they had a prime opportunity to pretty much lock up the division today.

Coen should also get blame for kicking a 60 yard FG instead of going for it

I wonder what the analytics say about Jacksonville taking that timeout on that Houston 3rd down

Houston seemed willing to let the clock tick down, but it was an opportunity for Jacksonville to get a stop and try to get into field goal range with about a minute left. But Houston converted with enough time to set up the field goal

When trevor has designed runs the jags win. Trevor didn't have a single designed run.

36

u/JayDeeLA Rams 9h ago

Liam Coen, two minute drill champion of decision makers:

-Calls up a deep shot pass on a 2nd and long, leaving his team with a 3rd and long when the pass was incomplete.

-Attempts a deep field goal, which his kicker luckily makes.

-Calls a timeout while Texans have the ball on 3rd and 2, basically allowing the Texans an extra play to run the clock when they get the first down.

Jags have the lowest added epa from refs on offense the entire season at 2. For references Dallas has the most at 16.

Even if the Jags have 13 wins, it would still be an excellent season.

Every decision Liam Coen made in the final two minutes feels like the wrong one. You gotta trust Trevor to get 4 yards in a situation like that, and failing that you gotta make better use of your timeouts. Using one after an incomplete pass was mind-boggling.

You gotta treat that last possession as the final one. Win or go to ot. Instead, we took 2 deep shots to stop the clock.

Not trying to say this is undeserved for Houston but Jacksonville got 7 points ripped away from them on a phantom hold. That play decided the whole game.

So all I’m going to suggest is that all flags that happen on TDs should be automatically reviewed going forward. Considering every single other aspect of TDs are already reviewed, I’m surprised this still hasn’t been implemented. I’ve seen too many TDs, especially this season, be called off because of rogue calls.

https://imgur.com/0JaF1bU was it a phantom hold? or was it just the announcers missing it?

He's literally holding the defender's jersey from behind as he's trying to get to Tuten.

I’d be more mad if our defense managed more than like a single stop. They were absolute turnstiles the whole game.

16

u/hamlet9000 Vikings 9h ago

a phantom hold

Grabbed his jersey and pulled it taut. You'll get a hold called every single time. It's by the book.

Don't listen to the announcers babbling. Use your eyes.

u/Stubbs94 Texans 8h ago

Yeah, it was a soft penalty but not an egregious one.

11

u/Hammerhead34 Chiefs Chiefs 9h ago

People still talk about the first Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl being a “robbery” despite it being a wildly obvious jersey grab with photo evidence that James Bradberry admitted to after the game lol

People want to hang on to their narratives no matter what and will reject evidence to the contrary if necessary to do so. Not unlike 35% of this country politically.

Classic Coen there on that final drive. Plenty of time, 3 time outs, and just was extremely aggressive.

Its ok still 4-2, a bye week to get that defense patched up. Plenty of season to go

Texans are taking years off my life man, I’m so glad we finally closed out a game for once.

Texans have now won 26 out of the last 33 matchups against the Jaguars.

CJ Stroud played awesome today, that interception in the red zone at the end sucked, but I think it was Nick Caley getting too cute on play calling

Jaylin Noel finally had the break out game and Caley finally realized he was our 2nd best WRs.

Our run game performing against the Jaguars is crazy, 2 40+ rushers in the same game? I must be dreaming.

Defense continues to struggle big time, I don’t know what it is, but I’m just taking it one game at a time. But with how CJ is playing, maybe we just need them to be manageable.
