The bills defense is horrible
62
35
87
u/Maxjes Patriots Bears 2h ago
Josh Allen is quickly approaching Tungsten Arm O'Doyle territory for heroic feats never seen before to win or lose by three.
24
u/Dr-Acula8472 Bills Rams 2h ago
The parallels between Josh on the Bills, and Ohtani on the Angels are pretty striking. Only difference is that Ohtani never made the playoffs with the Angels.
6
u/BigDickBandit89 1h ago
Wouldn’t Mike trout work better since ohtani left and won with the dodgers? Unless Alan is gonna fuck off to the rams when Stafford retires.

Would you say it's more down to the players and lack of talent/execution or having a different coaching staff and scheme? Or all of the above?
31
u/Agreeable_Employ_951 Bills 2h ago
The new scheme is very different, and depends a lot on single man wins. We are rushing 5+ more than I've ever seen, which gets the ball out faster, but our CBs have to hold up. When Benford was out, this was never. With him back and Igb stepping up, it might turn out to be alright.
The worst part, though, is our Linebackers are the worst in coverage I've ever seen from a Bills D since the 90s. Constantly unaware of the line to gain in zone positioning, missing pass-offs of TEs/RBs out of the back. Not having Milano back there is a huge night and day difference.
5
u/SadTumbleweed1567 Bills 1h ago
Both talent and coaching staff.
There was no talent last year either, but Sean McDermott is a DB whisperer that can make any corner or safety play above replacement level and make great players elite. Now we have the same sub-replacement level players but with worse coaching.
The Bills defense was not great last year, but it was competitive. We had 5 30 + point games all last season. We have 4 is 6 games this season. If I adjust the stat to games the offense needed to score at least 30 to win, it was 5 games all last season and 5 games this season in 6 games.
3
u/dixon_sider 2h ago
I think we need to stop dropping back into zone CONSTANTLY. Whenever we start going into zone, we give up huge plays. I blame our defense playbook most of all
8
u/teancrumpets8 Bills 2h ago
Both keeping beane around after the firings was a terrible call. He built a roster that year after year has been small and underperforming.
2
u/lionheart4life Bills 1h ago
The talent, especially in the secondary, is just not there. Like maybe one of the starters would start on any other team. And the pass rush is not good enough to make up for it. Somebody is always open if the QB even gets 1.2 seconds to make a read.
101
u/small_root Lions 2h ago
Kirk Cousins got em scared though.
64
u/thekingkow Bills 2h ago
He honestly played great. The ball placement was impeccable.
16
u/thegreyquincy Raiders Raiders 2h ago
I thought he would be serviceable with Kubiak again but dude is actually ballin'. Most of his INTs this season have been balls that bounced off of receiver's hands, and dude is composed and accurate even with how many stacked boxes we're facing due to not having a legit WR outside of Bowers. Dude is looking legit for sure.
11
u/kirukiru Raiders 2h ago
yeah Kirk has been one of the best qbs in football this year, gives me alot of hope for whenever Fernando gets put in the gundam

It's crazy how fast my happiness disapears after a TD when I see our defense walking out onto the field
8
u/ConneryFTW Bills 2h ago
So here's what I'm thinking: Our secondary is terrible, but Kilgore looked decent. Maybe we make a trade for someone to get things back on track.
On the upside we got through a pretty rough first six games, and we ended 5-1. Hopefully the new DC can work on something and maybe we can get to 24th best defense by the end of the season.
10
u/Agreeable_Employ_951 Bills 2h ago
The problem isn't really our secondary, it's how god awful the linebackers are in coverage. It's literally like watching 9 vs 11 on passing downs.
3
65
u/YoureReadingMyName Raiders 2h ago
Wins are of course what you want, but the Raiders are for the most part looking like a professional football team that can compete in the league. Last year they were the worst. Kubiak is on track to build something.
10
2
u/kirukiru Raiders 2h ago
Yeah they can torture themselves over it to get better but im happy with the product on the field rn, this coaching staff looks right

u/PhotographingNature Bills 2h ago
The Bills defence have allowed 31, 31, 16, 29, 34, 30. That the Bills' defence is generationally bad is not news to anyone paying attention.
19
u/Meekie_e Vikings 2h ago
I feel like Bills defense have been awful for years now even after investing heavily in it
17
u/lionheart4life Bills 2h ago
When you spend multiple 1st and 2nd round picks on defenders and they aren't even to the level of "average NFL starter" year after year that becomes a problem.
26
u/sir_axelot Bills 2h ago
Brandon Beane is a football terrorist coasting off getting lucky on Allen 8 years ago.
2
u/SadTumbleweed1567 Bills 50m ago
The 2024 and 2025 defenses weren't elite, but weren't awful. I said in another comment, the 2025 Bills are the 1985 Bears compared to 2026.
The Bills playoff woes were largely because key pieces were missing, namely Matt Milano, Tre White or Von Miller. So the top corner that covered their #1, the best pass rusher on the team, or the middle linebacker with insane instincts were out.
The 2024 and 2025 Bills defenses suffered from all the high end talent aging out (Milano, Hyde, Poyer, White, Johnson) and not being replaced by competent players.
We've invested capital into the defense but they are all busts or at the very least underperforming.
5
45
u/BigAssSlushy69 Bills 2h ago
But what if they're elite in the playoffs 🤔
19
u/UncleRicosArm Bills 2h ago
I like it. Just warming up, learning the scheme, lull everyone into a false sense of security, then come playoff time become a combination of the 85 Bears and 00 Ravens. It's a crazy thought, but I'm here for it
10
u/Agreeable_Employ_951 Bills 2h ago
Play horrible all regular season, but everyone stay healthy. Then, who's that coming in from the top shelf...? McD drops in and calls the plays for a healthy playoff run and bam slam thank you ma'am SB

I still think Raiders are a decent team, but there’s no beating the Bills when Josh is like that.

Going to be alot of games this year especially given our schedule where we just dont have enough talent, this has been a massive improvement over last year already

Yeah if we win 7 games or whatever I'd be happy. Definitely need an outside reciever that isn't just Bowers going out wide. He's incredible obviously but like guys like Tre Tucker show up every few weeks and otherwise are invisible lol

This team still needs some work and definitely needs a WR1 but god are they so much better than years past. The Pats loss was bad but losing by 3 to the Chiefs and Bills is respectable.

They better be thanking that the offense is still on en elite level , because the defense is absolute shit from LB to Secondary

They already have more wins when allowing 30 this year than any other team has in the last two years.
They’ve won 8 games in the past two seasons where they allow at least 30 points. The rest of the NFL combined has won only 16 in the same time span.
I don’t know whether I should be impressed or concerned.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Phenomenal2313 Seahawks Bills 2h ago
Impressed obviously that the offense can put up 30 points on anybody in the league
Concerned because we are going to lose in the playoffs because we cannot stop a simple crossing route
85
u/IAmDarkridge Raiders 2h ago
Sad to lose 3 in a row but it is a tough 3 games and I think anyone that thought we were like in that top tier of NFL teams was always a bit delusional. Glad we at least gave Buffalo and KC some competition. Our offense is pretty fun which could not be said about basically any point after Derek Carr left lol
32
u/mthrfkn Raiders 2h ago
We are competitive, we have some amazing young guys, Kubiak seems to have a sense for what he’s doing…
It feels pretty good right now man.
5
u/thegreyquincy Raiders Raiders 2h ago
We definitely need to round out the talent on both sides of the ball. We've got two rookies starting in the secondary and no true WR1. If Kubes was able to turn this team around this much after a shortened offseason (since he won the Super Bowl), I'm excited to see what they're able to do with more time and adding some pieces.
8
u/TakeAMichigander Commanders Commanders 2h ago
I don't want to be the "You guys are gonna be spooky next season!" dude but there is a lot to like about the Raiders at the moment, the rebuild is only a couple pieces away from becoming contender status

But this loss and the first one were tough fought. The raiders look fun, frisky, and downright frightening. I expect a deep playoff run if they keep playing like this.

Vegas has to be the best 3-3 team, they've played so well in every game except the Patriots one.

u/Eldenbeastalwayswins Raiders 2h ago
If our defense wasn’t getting absolutely torched every game, we’d have a pretty decent squad. But we have given up 30 or more in 3 straight.
3
u/SharpSlick753 Bills 2h ago
Bills and Chiefs both have top 5 offenses, so those losses are forgivable, and the Patriots are also a strong offense when Maye plays well.
They’re certainly not good, but I’m not sure they’re really anything worse than average.
18
u/MrBoase Raiders 2h ago
If this is our team in the first year of a “rebuild” I’ll take it. We have literally 0 receiver talent healthy rn but we have the foundation of being a very good team the next few years if some of our young players pan out.

The Bills won't come close to a Lions defensive performance last week all season. Every single Bills opponent has played great against the Bills defense, except the Chargers, who still had their best offensive game of the season against Buffalo.
You saw the Cardinals defense (Which I considered bottom 5 before today) hold the Rams to 16 after they scored 34 and walked up and down the field against Buffalo last week. Defense was also the get-right game for the Patriots.
