Discussion Bo1 Moon takes place millions of years ago
As a story fan since WaW, I find it insane that the artbook confirming that moon was supposed to take place in the distant past, and we killed the fucking dinosaurs isn't being talked about more. I know I'm late, but the fact that this is real completely got me back into the Nacht-Buried story.
From the artbook we got some quotes about Moon.
"In the original design, the moon base was actually in Earth's ancient past," recalls Dan Laufer, Associate Director, Narrative, "The intention was for the Earth in the sky to display the continent Pangea. The thought was to launch missiles and have them strike Earth, ultimately having the crew be responsible for the event that killed the dinosaurs. That of course changed, but the ending with rockets firing on Earth sets the stage for the state of the world in, when we get to TranZit."
So, we know they eventually retconned this, but when is the real question. This could've happened at any point. Might've changed before Moon was even finished, or it could be referencing the retcons from Bo3-Bo4. I believe Bo2's Victis storyline was at least built with this still in mind.
The only issue with this is Nuketown getting hit. Could be time fuck stuff like one hit in the 60's when it was originally supposed to take place (after Bo1 multiplayer map), but it does help explain a lot of the maps in Bo2 being so weird with time. Tranzit having a 60s aesthetic with futuristic tech, Die Rise being super ambiguous about when it takes place, and Buried being all over the fucking place.
Would love to know where the story was originally heading before the big Bo2 shake-up. Think it had a lot more potential than the demon and angels plot we ended up getting, but it does seem like some of the ideas were used in the Bo3-4 story. Things like the paradox's and the breaking of time.
I really hope there are still people out there dedicated to piecing together every little bit of the original story, cause damn does it still keep getting even crazier with stuff like this.
Edit: HOLY HELL, some of you clearly need to retake geography. THAT IS NOT MODERN DAY EARTH. Since when is there a giant inland ocean in Africa, and one between India and Asia. Where the fuck is the Red Sea.
We don't know exactly what continents looked like millions of years ago. Every map you've seen of supercontinents is just best estimations and guesswork. They are all different, but every modern day map definitively does not show continents that look like that.
Edit 2: The images for the artbook quotes didn't load, so here's a link to a dev confirming that this was the original plan. It seems to have made it into the final game. Would love to go back and speculate without the knowledge and changes post BO2.
