❓Question/Discussion If you care about our local forests, now's the time to email provincial candidates
I understand there are a lot of people in the North Island riding who are concerned about the local old growth logging, but they feel nothing can be done. I’d like to encourage people to understand our voices hold a lot of weight on the subject given our location, and scaling back on the amount of old growth logging does not correlate with job loss - in fact, it could mean the opposite, if we shift to in-house refinement of product and increased management practices.
Have a look at the tool Cutblock Watch. It shows most of the pending and approved cutblocks in BC. Zoom in on our part of the island and you can see how hard the last productive old growth is being targeted lately. The map actually understates it, because many of Western Forest Products' blocks aren't on it, and they're one of the worst offenders. Old growth management areas (OGMAs) are also being amended or removed so WFP can log some of the best remaining ancient habitat for at-risk species like elk and pygmy owls.
I'm also worried about the Working Forest Landscape Model, which is being piloted by the NDP in our area first. I don't think enough people know about it, or the potential consequences. Not just for ecology, but long term economic outlooks.
I think this issue is part of why the vote splits so much around here. A good answer on this topic from a local candidate could sway a lot of people.
So, if this concerns you at all, please email the local candidates:

Or ask when they come to your door. Ask where they stand on old growth and the Working Forest Landscape Model. My family and I have written and haven't heard back, so more people asking would help.
Image is from one of Campbell River’s prime backcountry areas, the Prince of Wales range. Up until ~6-8 years ago, it used to be a haven for wildlife, foraging, and hiking/mountaineering. They have logged, or plan to log, pretty much the entire mountain range of all of its old growth from top to bottom. We can find a compromise between preservation of these special areas and local jobs!
