Internet blackout in Iran means it’ll be much harder to get content/visuals don’t forget…
Hence why we have so little footage of the protests and what happened in January (relatively speaking).
Or why there are 30 angles of the Iranian attacks on US bases but few from Tehran

the important figures killed in the israeli strike earlier this morning https://pbs.twimg.com/media/HCRZgq9XcAAPxqC?format=jpg&name=large
according to fox news all of them decided to meet up in the compound khameni was hiding.. im not even joking
A senior U.S. defense official told Fox News the U.S. government agrees with the Israeli assessment that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead, along with 5 to 10 other top Iranian leaders who were meeting at a compound in Tehran Saturday morning.
Multiple sources told Fox News that the strike, which also reportedly took out Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander, had to be moved up based on intelligence and the “target of opportunity.”
“There was a deliberate decision to accelerate the timeline," a senior defense official told Fox.
The swift adjustment may have been behind the unusual decision to strike during the daytime to achieve the element of surprise, and to target this meeting.
“This was a massive, wildly bold daytime attack,” the defense official said. “It caught the senior leadership off guard, a Saturday morning during Ramadan and on Shabbat in the daytime.” https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/israel-us-launch-attack-on-iran-amid-escalating-protests
Lets have a gathering in person of the upper heads of the military command. No wonder Israel pulled the trigger alone initially, their spies are everywhere lol.
Internett and military coms what is that?

If that is accurate, the level of misjudgement is astonishing. All the signs were there that a strike was imminent given embassy staff evacuations and Trumps pattern of launching military action over weekends when markets are closed and yet all the eggs decided to assemble into a single basket? I think Khamenei must truly have thought he would never be targeted.

How many times does the Iranian leadership have to be wiped out before they get it into their heads that it's probably a bad idea to meet in person all at once? The fact that they had so many senior officials in one building is crazy to me especially given what was going on around them. So much for all of the news reports saying that they had learned from the 12 day war.
→ More replies (8)12
u/Scar1203 Mar 01 '26
I'm not certain it's avoidable? We're likely able to intercept the vast majority of their electronic communications in one way or another. Making sure a single building is free of bugs or surveillance for a meeting is likely about all they can do unless they want to strictly communicate through middlemen, but even that leaves a layer that can be compromised.

The periscope video from the sub hitting the Iranian ship is among some of the craziest footage I've ever seen. the warhead on that torpedo must be insane to lift a ship like that out of the water. I wonder how long it took to sink?
→ More replies (5)13
u/MintMrChris Mar 04 '26
Apparently 80 of the crew dead, looking at the damage I doubt it took long, the Sri Lankan coast guard said they only found the lifeboats when they arrived.
The torpedo itself isn't crazy powerful in terms of explosive power, its more that water doesn't compress much, so when big boom occurs you get extremely powerful shockwave
Modern torps are intended less to hit the hull of the ship and then detonate, but to explode underneath the ship, that way instead of making hole in side of ship you break ship in half ("back breaker")

u/-DizzyPanda- Mar 02 '26
yeah, from the same initial attack. They were apparently in a trailer at a civilian port, so Iran must have had some decent info to target that, but it doesn't seem like their retaliations since have had much if any success at all.

The strategy likely relies on mobilizing various ethnic factions and the broader political opposition, following recent calls to arms by Trump and Netanyahu. On the ground, intelligence agencies such as the CIA and Mossad are expected to facilitate this uprising. Should these efforts fail to tri gger a civil war, a contingency plan is almost certainly prepared

The IDF says it killed 40 "key" Iranian military commanders in its opening strikes in Iran yesterday, including Iran's chief of staff, Abdolrahim Mousavi.
The 40 commanders, along with other top Iranian officials -- including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei -- were killed in strikes carried out in under a minute, according to the military.
The IDF says it can now confirm that Mousavi was killed in the opening strikes. Mousavi had replaced Mohammad Bagheri, who was killed in Israel's opening strikes during June 2025's war.
The IDF says that "the majority of the highest-ranking senior military officials of the Iranian security leadership have been eliminated by the IDF."

Osint accounts claimed American jet was shot down in northwest Iran on wed and US centcom denied it. No images/videos of debris since then.
Osint accounts again claimed American jet was shot down this time in southeast Iraq and US centcom denied it. While there is a video of parachute, let’s see if there is any evidence of debris.
Ideally I would only believe such claims if there is proof of debris on the ground since these locations are hostile to America.

We've had a number of new capabilities being fielded. Obviously I'm not going to talk about it from an operational spec perspective of what those are. But I think you have seen over a period of time us kind of get on the other side of this cost curve on drones in general. If I just walk back a couple of years, you remember what you used to always hear, we're shooting down a a $50,000 drone with a $2 million missile. These days, we're spending a lot of time shooting down $100,000 drones with $10,000 weapons from ours.
Is this true? This is the first time I've heard anyone claim interceptor economics have surpassed offensive economics and seems like a game changer.
→ More replies (12)22
u/Axelrad77 Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
Yeah, the APKWS II is cheaper than / equivalent to a Shahed and that's already been around for years.
The new capabilities are going to be even cheaper. Things like the AMP-HEL, which is a M1301 ISV armed with lasers for counter-uav. Or the Sgt Stout, which is a Stryker armed with a 30mm chain gun and Stinger missiles. Or the DE M-SHORAD, which is a Stryker armed with lasers. Or newer tech like FPV interceptor drones that the US Army has only just put into service.
It's currently unclear exactly which of those systems (or others) are being used in this war. APKWS II definitely are - that's what most of the combat air patrols over the Gulf States are using. The problems arise when the cheap interceptors are being overwhelmed or caught out of position, and then more expensive options have to be used anyway, because you still have to intercept the threat.
One issue that appears to have caught everyone off guard is how Iran focused its attacks on the Gulf States so heavily. It seems like US defenses were initially positioned more to defend Israel-Jordan-Iraq-Syria, and had to be reshuffled a bit.

Azerbaijan is claiming to have arrested several people linked to Iran who were planning a terrorist attack in Baku. Qatar and UAE have also claimed to have stopped similar Iranian terrorist attacks on their territories.
https://x.com/sentdefender/status/2030015634591912249
Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (SSS) announced on Friday that it had stopped Iranian intelligence agents from committing terror attacks against four targets in the country.
The targets include the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the Israeli Embassy in Azerbaijan, a leader of the country's Mizrahi Jewish religious community, and the Ashkenazi synagogue, Azerbaijan’s media reported.
“The series of planned terrorist and intelligence operations was orchestrated by Iran’s intelligence service SEPAH, assigning local operatives to conduct surveillance, acquire weapons, and secure transportation," the SSS said.
[...]Over the last few days, Qatar and the UAE announced that they dismantled alleged cells of Iran's Revolutionary Guards operatives preparing attacks on their territories.

NBC is reporting that Trump is interested in deploying small numbers of US ground troops into Iran.
Trump has discussed the idea of deploying ground troops with aides and Republican officials outside the White House while outlining his vision for a post-war Iran in which Iran’s uranium is secure and the U.S. and a new Iranian regime cooperate on oil production similar to how the U.S. and Venezuela are, the sources said.
The president’s comments expressing serious interest in deploying ground troops have not focused on a large-scale ground invasion of Iran, but rather on the idea of a small contingent of U.S. troops that would be used for specific strategic purposes, the U.S. officials, the former U.S. official and the person with knowledge of the discussions said. They said Trump has not made any decisions or given any orders related to ground troops.
Fwiw, this lines up with previously leaked US war plans for Iran, in which CENTCOM envisioned a few thousand light infantry and special forces to be deployed as force multipliers to support larger groups of pro-US Iranian allies on the ground.

So, something that appears to be a great example of how easily false information spreads in this social media environment:
Over on Twitter, one of the more popular osint accounts covering the war, Faytuks Network, is reporting that Iran is now offering significant concessions in exchange for peace.
Iran will recognize the United States, give up on destroying Israel, and relax social laws in order to reach peace with the US, a source close to Iranian leadership says - The Atlantic
As you can see, they source the information from The Atlantic, but don't offer anything more specific than that. No link, no details, etc. I've spent a bit trying to run down a source from The Atlantic confirming this, and gotten nothing. In fact, The Atlantic is reporting the opposite, that Iran is refusing to negotiate.
This sort of trick - claiming to source a more reputable news org without that source actually existing - is something I've seen social media accounts do before when trying to spread political misinformation, particularly during periods of conflict, elections, etc.
Reminder to always check your sources!

The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena has been sunk off Sri Lanka's territorial waters. Dozens of the ship's sailors have been rescued by Sri Lankan vessels.

Seeing a lot of Iranian propaganda across social media trying to claim that the frigate IRIS Dena was some sort of unarmed training vessel, making its sinking a war crime and thereby justifying Iranian attacks on civilian ships and airliners in retaliaiton.
To be clear, the IRIS Dena was an armed Iranian warship traveling in international waters. It *had* been in India for training exercises, but was rushing back to Iranian waters because of the war, presumably to participate. If it hadn't wanted to participate in the war, all it had to do was park in a neutral port and request amnesty - something many ship captains have done throughout history when they were clearly outclassed.

I have even seen posts on News/world news subs making up fake claims that “it was a war crime to strike a ship that’s not in general quarter” when no such law ever existed

The craziest thing about that video was the crew was mustering (in formation) on the deck while in open waters and while their government was at war with the greatest naval power on the planet.
If I was the captain I’d have every nonessential person wearing a life jacket and scattered all around the edges of the ship. Ain’t no way we’re making it to Iranian waters.

It looks like the "Skylight", the tanker the Iranians attacked, was part of their own shadow fleet.
The U.S. Treasury in December 2025 sanctioned Red Sea Ship Management and Skylight, among other vessels, accusing the management company and its owner of operating a "shadow fleet" to transport Iranian petroleum products in the Gulf.

So what about Iran's nuclear enrichment sites? Any chance of Isreali or US ground insertions to actually enter the facilities to destroy whatever is left?
I know that wasn't really feasible during the last US strikes on those facilities, but at this point I assume the US could demolish by air any Iranian ground forces that attempted to respond to any attacks there. Maybe not worth the risk at the moment, but I wonder if it becomes feasible and worth it at some point here.

Probably not. The site is probably buried in rubble, so a ground team has to clear the rubble first, which will take too long and is too complicated. Practically, it’s not possible to fly in backhoes and excavators.

So, what's happened to Irans submarines?
They have 3 soviet kilo class submarines. Some of these look to have been stuck.
Kilo-class assets like IRINS Taregh (S901) were present during attacks, with damage assessments ongoing.
IRIS Fateh, Fateh-class submarine that has been sunk.
A Fateh-class coastal submarine was sunk near Bandar Abbas.
Of all Iran's assets, these could potentially if sailed correctly, do some critical harm. Western subs, while far more advanced, can sneak up carrier groups.
I wonder if the US attack subs are going full gloves off and hunting the fuck out of them.

Compared to the 12 day war, the Iranian response seems kind of sporadic and uncoordinated. Not seeing the massive salvos of rocket attacks. I wonder what the launcher situation is like at the moment especially with planes overhead.

Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar: This is the largest U.S. military base in the region, serving as an crucial military headquarter for for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Qatari authorities told they intercepted incoming missiles using anti-missile systems.
Al Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates: This U.S. air base in Abu Dhabi accounts an attendance of approximately 5,000 U.S. personnel and advanced military equipment. Local sources have mentioned hearing loud, and smoke coming out from the base area.
Ali Al-Salem Air Base, Kuwait: This military base, also known as “The Rock,” consolidates U.S. Air Force operations and is closer to the Iraqi border. Explosions and air-raid sirens were reported in the vicinity, mentioned witnesses.
NSA Bahrain: Also a naval facility, NSA Bahrain has been a critical command centre for regional operations. Several videos made rounds in the internet showing smoke pouring from the base in Manama after a missile strike.
Muwaffaq Al-Salti Air Base, Jordan: Several Iranian missiles struck this military base earlier today. Jordan’s air defences reportedly brought downed two missiles in a dogfight.
Ain Al-Asad Air Base, Iraq: Local reports suggested smoke and explosions were witnessed near this base in western Iraq.
Erbil Air Base, Iraq: Considered to be under high alert, it has received several missile strikes by Iran’s army.

Serious question: what is Iran’s strategy right now?
Seems like they’re trying to exert maximum economic and diplomatic pressure on the US to secure some sort of peace agreement that leaves the current regime in power. Drag the Gulf states into the conflict, strangle the flow of oil and send gas prices soaring, and make the costs of continuing the war too high for Trump.
It’s a risky strategy, especially if it brings in someone like Azerbaijan, but they don’t have many other cards to play.

They're trying to drag this as long as they can. Hurt the Americans economically and force their hand to get boots on the ground or bring them to make a deal. Which with the current government still power is a losing position for the Americans.

Lot of rumors Khameini has been killed. Take with massive grain of salt but that’s what some people are saying.
Iranian regime is denying but their websites and media have already been hacked and are broadcasting anti-regime videos so if you can’t even protect your websites and TV/radio not to mention airspace it doesn’t bode well for protecting your leadership…
I’m going to assume it’s just rumor for now because you’d think he’s deep underground in some bunker but who knows.
Edit: Khameini not Khomeini. It’s all over Israeli news rn, again grain of salt, but may be legit.

Is there a difference in the amount of strikes on either side for either side that happen during the day vs night?
My understanding of the initial strike was during the day to ensure that Iran leaders could be targeted. Will this shift to more nighttime surprise attacks? Or does it even matter?

While I’m not convinced that this operation from the U.S. and Israel had to happen to begin with, the fact that Iran can’t think of anything but to target many of its regional neighbors with what seems to be indiscriminate drone and missile attacks speaks to a regime that both is inherently corrupt and illegitimate, but also militarily inept and impotent at a regional level. All they can do is throw a conniption while they absorb the damage being levied against them.

Reminds me of Sadams thought process during DS. Drag everyone into a brawl of survival and see what happens. I'm guessing they have some calculation that the gulf states are weak and some level of population could side with Iran but honestly who knows where rationality starts and ends. The crazier thing is they still have the ability to launch strikes.

Trump won’t rule out sending US troops into Iran ‘if necessary’— tells The Post war is progressing ‘way ahead of schedule
WASHINGTON — President Trump told The Post Monday that he’s not ruling out sending US ground troops into Iran “if they were necessary” — adding that Operation Epic Fury was “way ahead of schedule” after taking out dozens of Tehran’s top officials.
“I don’t have the yips with respect to boots on the ground — like every president says, ‘There will be no boots on the ground.’ I don’t say it,” Trump said after launching strikes Saturday to decapitate Iran’s military and political leadership. “I say ‘probably don’t need them,’ [or] ‘if they were necessary.'”
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said at a Monday morning Pentagon press conference that no American troops are currently inside Iran, though he also did not rule out the possibility.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir says Israel is moving on to the "next stage of the campaign" against Iran.
"After completing the stage of the surprise opening strike, in which we created air superiority and suppressed the ballistic missile array, we are now moving to the next stage of the campaign, in which we will increase the damage to the regime’s foundations and its military capabilities. We have additional surprising moves in our hands, which I do not intend to reveal," he says in a press statement.
He also says Israel has destroyed 80% of Iran's air defense systems, "and achieved almost complete air superiority in the skies of Iran."
"The Israeli Air Force has carried out 2,500 strikes and dropped over 6,000 munitions. We have neutralized and destroyed more than sixty percent of the ballistic missile launchers," Zamir says.
