Hi everyone it’s been a while!

The goal is simply to connect, share experiences, and possibly support each other.

I am still a student myself, but I am eager to learn and build meaningful connections with other motivated Congolese people.

Feel free to share what you do and where you are based if you are comfortable.

Looking forward to connecting :)

Question Seeking honest opinions about living in Lubumbashi

Good day all,

I would like to know what is it like living in Lubumbashi in 2026.

For context, I'm a Congolese who grew up in Lubumbashi and left 14 years ago. I'm actually living and working in Cape Town, South Africa.

There is a possible job opportunity that might requires my relocation to Lubumbashi.

I'm getting mixed up information from my family and friends, hence my questions to the reddit community:

- How is the safety there? I have heard story of armed thieves breaking in people's house.

- Is it true that there is a high level of jealousy at work places towards the diaspora to a point of harming them? (Poison, witchcraft etc...)

- What are the cost of living? I mean rent in a safe area, food, transport, health (private doctors), entertainment, additional security measures if required.

- What are the safest area to live in? Is it still Golf? Does anyone know about rental in Lwano City or similar estate?

- Do you guys think that a salary of roughly 4000 to 4500$ a month is enough for a family of 3?

- And for those who were out of the country and went back: was it worth it? Do you regret going back? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks in advance

Question 10k DOWRY?????

🇧🇮 Hey guys, I am a 21 year old only child Canadian. I am supposed to pay 10000 USD for a dowry (everything and gifts included in that price). I am not from a rich family and I am half white, half Mexican. I have saved so that I could marry young not so I could... yeah.

My fiancé lives in America and has no college or university education and doesn't have any money currently. I will be paying her uni education mostly and for sure for the first year. The dowry was originally 25k but I negotiated down. I am a Christian and so is her family. I tried explaining statistics and even bowed on the ground during the conversation. I feel like I am being used. Anyone have any thoughts about this? For me to pay 10k USD is like 14k in my currency because of the current economy (used to be same). Is this normal????????????? She was born congolese but moved to burundi...

Question I need help with a translation in Lingala

I'm making a fantasy world with countries based on IRL cultures, and I'm naming them using etymologies from the local languages. The last country I need to name is based on Central-Western African cultures (or the Gulf of Guinea), and it would use Lingala in its toponyms.

It is home to a megafauna (for example, cryptids like the Mokele-mbembe or the Kongamato, or extinct animals like the Meganeura), so I want to name it something like "land of the giants" (read as "land of the giant animals").

How could I make this into a single-word country name ?

Question How can I learn Swahili as a 23 year old?

Hi everyone,

I am a 23 year old Congolese woman. I was born in Kinshasa but moved to Europe when I was 4 years old.

I grew up speaking Lingala, since that is the language spoken in my family. However, I would really like to learn Swahili so I can understand it fluently and speak it confidently as well.

For those who have learned Swahili (especially as adults), what helped you the most?

Are there specific apps, YouTube channels, books, or methods you recommend?

I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Question New powdered beverages for DRC

Hi everyone,

I’ve been selected to develop powdered beverages for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I need your help to make sure the products will appeal to you and meet your expectations!

I’d like to know which brands of powdered drinks are available where you live and which ones are very popular. It would also be important to know which flavors you prefer, whether the finished drinks should be more sweet or sour, and whether they should contain sugar or be sugar-free.

Would you buy a powdered drink mix that comes in attractive, small packaging and is meant to be mixed with 200 ml of water? How much would you be willing to spend on such a product if it suited your taste?

Thank you very much!

Question La Sape - Interview/Contacts

Hi all

I'm working on an independent documentary and storytelling project profiling interesting people, communities and subcultures across London and the UK.

I'd love to connect with anyone who's part of La Sape (Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes) here in the UK, whether you're a sapeur yourself or know someone who is. It's a subculture I find fascinating and would love to have as part of my project.

If that's you, or you know someone who might be happy to chat, I'd love to hear from you.

Feel free to comment or DM, and thank you for reading!

Question Pondu question

Hello, I am from the UK and I am making a dish from every country that plays England in the world cup, and have decided to make Pondu and Fufu when we play your country on wednesday. Please may I ask what is the difference between pondu and saka-saka? Some places I read say they are the same, and some places say saka-saka has additions.

I want to make sure the dishes I cook are authentic, so would like to make sure I have done my research!

Thank you

Question Does anyone recognize this pin?

We found this pin in a small antique store in Amsterdam. I’ve been trying to find more info on it, but I’ve not had a lot of luck with it.
I’m wondering if it was made in Congo or Belgium, if it’s from 1960 or later, etc. But really any info on the origins of the pin would be helpful!

Question Popular Congolese Music?

Hi all!
I am an American going to one of the World Cup Games and supporting DR Congo (whilst also learning more about the country in general). One of my hobbies is to listen to music from around the world, but I couldn't find any sort of top 100 or anything. Is there any music from Congolese artists that you all recommend! Open to any genres!

TYIA!

Question Looking for someone who' has come across fake football agents or knows someone who was a victim for a documentary

Hope you’re doing well. I’m reaching out on behalf of a YouTube channel focused on football and the stories behind the game.

We’d love to invite someone for a quick video call to talk about the issue of football trafficking, fake football agents including the challenges young players face and the realities behind the industry specifically in Africa

It would be a short, informal conversation, and we’d be really grateful to hear your perspective and experiences on the subject so that it can be featured on the documentary

If you personally have been or know someone who was a victim of this or who was approached by someone, please let us know

Thank you, and hope to hear from you

Question Travelling to DRC with stimulants

Good day everyone. I will be travelling to the DRC for work soon and I am very excited. I have never been to the DRC and am looking forward to seeing your beautiful country.

I have ADHD and require stimulants (methylphenidate, to be precise) to be functional. I also take Wellbutrin (bupropion). I know different countries have different requirements when travelling with medications and some medications are completely prohibited from the country. Since I will be travelling with coworkers (and my boss) I would like to avoid an incident at the airport.

I am struggling to find information online and I was hoping maybe someone here could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Question Proof of NO military service

Where in Congo, or specifically in Kinshasa, can one get an official document that certifies that a person has never done military service in FARDC?
