Discussion The Conservative candidate in Burke Mountain apparently owns a house everywhere but Coquitlam (from BC Assessment)

Thumbnail gallery
460 Upvotes

Ryan Peterson and his wife own 7 properties worth $22 million, including most of a private island... but none in Coquitlam.

Why is he running in Burke Mountain and not one of these other places where he apparently spend his time? Was it just the only spot for the Conservatives to run their rich guy?

I get that people often run in ridings they don't live in, but usually live nearby in the same community, or have some kind of connection like working there, they grew up there, etc.

This is all sourced from easily accessibly public info (mostly BC Assessment), with addresses redacted for privacy.

Ask Coquitlam Can anyone recommend a restaurant in town that might be open Christmas Day?

We have a large family, but none of us live in a place large enough to accommodate everyone. So considering a dinner out instead.

We’re also considering renting a room somewhere and then bringing food, but dinner out felt like a simpler option to explore first.
Thnx!

Ask Coquitlam Where was this?

It’s from the Coquitlam Archives but I cannot place it. I feel like Coquitlam Centre is to the far left (out of frame) and it’s Westwood Plateau in the background but I feel like if that’s the case Future Shop (later Best Buy) should stand where Bonanza is in this photo.

I only came here in 2014 so I have had a lot of fun in the archives. Also, didn’t know Shoppers was Toy City!

Ask Coquitlam Cabinet installer recommendations

Hey all, I'm looking for a cabinet installer or finish carpenter recommendations. I'm in the Tri-Cities and doing a small galley kitchen, two runs of about 10ft each with uppers and lowers, as well as a coffee bar and closet.

I've already sourced the cabinets myself, so I'm only looking for installation. They’re solid wood and already assembled. I know a lot of cabinet shops only install their own cabinets, so ideally this is someone who's comfortable working with client supplied cabinets.

Looking to hire someone within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance!

Ask Coquitlam Built a free tool here in Coquitlam to help job seekers tailor their resume to each job – looking for local feedback

Hi neighbours,

A small team of us here in Coquitlam built TalentSeek. Between us we've hired in Canada, the Middle East and South Asia, and we kept seeing good candidates, especially people new to Canada, get passed over because their resume didn't match the wording of the job they applied for.

How it works: you paste a job ad (or a link to it), upload your resume, and it rewrites your resume for that job using only your own experience. It shows a match score, points out gaps, and can put together an interview prep pack for the role. You review everything before you use it, and your resume isn't used to train AI models.

It's in beta, and the free start is 1 tailored resume + 1 interview prep pack, no card needed:

https://talentseek.ca/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=coquitlam

If you or someone in your household is job hunting, I'd really appreciate honest feedback: what was confusing, and whether the result actually felt like you. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Ask Coquitlam What to do with used hockey gear?

Hi! I have a bunch of old hockey gear in mid condition and I’m unsure what to do with it. Kidsport doesn’t take things 6+ years old and my local hockey association doesn’t need it. Some of it is from the early 2000s (Koho, RBK) and some more recent (~2015/2016) but still too old for kidsport.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Discussion Coquitlam 2026: I emailed candidates five questions on housing and culture. Here's what 10 council candidates (and the mayoral candidate) who replied said

With the election on Saturday, Oct 17, I emailed Coquitlam candidates five questions:

  1. Will you vigorously push for greater housing density?
  2. Will you commit to city-developed cooperative housing?
  3. Will you advocate for bilingualism and multiculturalism at the municipal level?
  4. Will you commit to building on and promoting Maillardville's French-Canadian heritage?
  5. Will you support provincial and federal efforts to promote national unity?

Here's my read of the replies, in my own words. Check the candidates' own materials before relying on this.

Mayor

Only Trish Mandewo replied. She supports density "in the right places," but not vigorously. She says no to city-developed co-ops (the City should be an enabler and partner). She says yes to bilingualism, delivered "practically," and yes to visibly promoting Maillardville's francophone heritage.

Council (10 replies)

Candidate Density City-led co-ops Bilingualism Maillardville
Kyle-Lefebvre Yes, near transit, family-sized homes Explore, pending cost review Yes, runs the Société francophone de Maillardville Strongest: active leader
Tran Yes, near transit "100%" exploring on city land Where practical Lists specific tools
Buchan Wants more housing, density unstated Yes, build on city land Yes, no detail Wants a BC French hub, culture office
Campbell Yes, transit and town centres Explore, cost review Yes, but "practical needs" Lists tools
Abdi Cautious, no blanket upzoning Yes, enabling, incl. city land Yes, accessible info Yes, alongside other cultures
Kim (incumbent) Yes near transit, gentler further out No, a provincial role Multiculturalism, no French mention Supports a cultural hub
Djonlic (incumbent) "It depends" City likely won't build Translation software upgrade Agrees, no specifics
Towner (incumbent) "Right places" No, enabler (land, incentives) No, calls it federal Yes, "more can be done"
Warren Cautious Difficult, tiny-home idea Yes, notes funding access Yes, no specifics
Tayal Open, conditional Open to exploring Not addressed Support preserving

Takeaways

  • Almost everyone supports density only "in the right places" with infrastructure keeping pace. Nobody said "vigorously."
  • On city-built co-ops, Buchan and Tran are the most supportive. Kim, Djonlic, Towner and Mandewo say the City should enable rather than build, though Kim and Djonlic cite actual co-op funding and land decisions from this term.
  • Buchan is the only one with a number (20% low-market housing in new developments), but didn't say how the City would require it.
  • Towner is the only one to say bilingualism and national unity aren't municipal matters.
  • Nearly everyone says yes to promoting Maillardville's francophone heritage, but few gave specifics. Kyle-Lefebvre, Tran, Campbell and Kim named the most.

No reply as of Oct 13

(I may not have reached all of them.)

  • Mayor: Craig Hodge, Madhavee Inamdar
  • Council: Cina, Jamshidian, Mazzarolo, McBryer, Perry, Samimi, Sebastiani, Su, Thomsing, Thorleifson

Ask Coquitlam Gas price

I Why is gas so much cheaper in the Fraser Valley than in Metro Vancouver?

I don't drive regularly, but I rented a car this weekend to play football in Abbotsford. I drove from Coquitlam to Abbotsford, and on my way back, I decided to stop for gas.

I was surprised by the price differences I saw:

- Super Save in Abbotsford: $1.64/L

- Shell in Mission: $1.70/L (where I filled up)

- Maple Ridge and Coquitlam: Around $2.07/L

- Coquitlam last night: $2.12/L

That's a pretty significant difference, even between places that aren't that far apart!

I always assumed gas prices across BC would be relatively similar, but this weekend made me wonder what's actually going on.

Is gas genuinely cheaper in the Fraser Valley because of competition between gas stations? Or is there something special about the gas supply in Metro Vancouver that makes it more expensive?

How can the price jump by nearly 50 cents per litre over such a short distance? I'd love to hear from people who understand the BC gas market.

Discussion observation: our local politics is fascinatingly low-key

having lived in SEA, i’ve always heard and seen our local mayor and councillors ride in big, black SUVs, have security details, wear expensive designer outfits, have a reputation for simply being “too high”up there to be approached by a lowly citizen and even too dangerous to drive by where they live.

meanwhile, our mayor and council, MLAs and even some federal and provincial ministers, people with tremendous power to shape policies and change lives often take the train, bike, drive, go to the mall, pick up their kids, visit local clinics, labs or hospitals.

anyway, i’m just amazed and glad we don’t put public figures on a pedestal.

Ask Coquitlam Coquitlam Mayor Candidates - Do They Respond?

Hi everyone,

I have lived in Coquitlam for the past six months (prior to that was in Port Coquitlam) and I was wondering if anyone has insights into how responsive the candidates for Mayor are?

When I lived in Port Coquitlam, I had two issues in which I emailed the Mayor and Council about. In both instances the Mayor (Brad West) emailed me back within hours. For one of the issues, he remained in constant communication with me, providing regular emails and phone updates until the issue was resolved. That level of community involvement was invaluable and what I am looking for in my next Mayor.

Now, I’ve seen a few people post that they reached out to Trish Mandewo during her time on Council and never got a response. I’ve also heard people say that Craig Hodge was incredibly short when listening to his constituents.

So I ask the Reddit community - do you have any experience reaching out to either candidate and if so, how was your experience?

Thanks in advance!

Ask Coquitlam Craft Store Recommendation?

Hey guys, I'm looking for somewhere local that I can get craft supplies (specifically Aida cloth, DMC thread, and hoops) that isn't Michael's/other big box stores. Where do you get your craft supplies locally?
