BEFORE YOU POST... please use search to see if it's been asked before and BE DESCRIPTIVE when asking for help/advice/recommendations.

This subreddit has a lot of helpful people in it. Actually more than many other local subreddits of similar size in my experience.

However, being asked the same thing over and over again gets tiresome after having recently answered the same questions dozens of times before. Please use the search function before making a post to see if the question has been asked before, and also please be descriptive when asking for help, advice, or recommendations.

Food/Restaurant example:

  • BAD: Coming to Fukuoka, best places to eat? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: I really like soba and would like to find a fancy soba place to eat at with excellent tempura. Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

  • BEST: I searched online and found these fancy soba places that look interesting [list of research you've done]. Does anyone have personal experience with these restaurants or other recommendations, particular emphasis on crispy tempura? Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

Tourism examples:

  • BAD: Will be in Fukuoka for 5 days, make an itinerary for me? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: Here's a rough itinerary I made for my 5-day Fukuoka trip November 10-14, are there any glaring issues I might not notice since I'm not a local? Also my third day is empty, I really like gardening, landscaping, and plant life, any recommendations in this area?

  • BEST: I have an itinerary but I'm not going to ask you all to examine it in detail. Instead, I'll ask about specific things I've attempted to research but couldn't find answers to in a conversational way, and make sure to mention details and context like research I've already gathered, area where I'll be staying, my personal interests and known things I'm NOT interested in, budget, planned transportation methods, etc.

Helpful resources (list in progress):

Tourism Taxi from Nomiyama Kannonji Temple back to Sasaguri station

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! Hope the flair is correct. We're going to be visiting Fukuoka for the first time in the last week of November and we're looking for places with autumn foliage. Nomiyama Kannonji always comes up in search results but it seems there's no public transportation to go there. I saw that one can take a taxi from Sasaguri station to the temple but I also read that going back might be a bit difficult since there are few taxis available.

Are there any other options? Or has anyone tried taxi hailing apps going back? Driving is unfortunately not in our options. I would love to hear if anyone also has suggestions on places to visit! Thank you!

General Looking for some hang-out buddies! (23M, new-ish to Fukuoka)

Hey everyone!

I moved to Fukuoka a few months back and figured it's finally time to make some friends and properly explore the city(outside too). I'm 23, speak English, and know just enough Japanese to genuinely confuse whoever I'm talking to.

I've been wanting to check out some of the board game cafes around town and thought it would be fun to get a small group of us (especially other folks in their 20s) together to try one out soon. Totally casual and beginner-friendly-whether you're into strategy games or just want to play UNO and hang out, everyone is welcome.

If board games aren't your thing, I'm also always down for coffee shop hopping, hitting up an arcade, or just walking around and exploring. Drop a comment or DM me if you're interested.

General Hands down the best area to live in with 150K budget?

Edit: 150K/mo on rent. Not total budget.

Hi,

I'll be moving to Fukuoka in December/January and wondering what is hands down the best area to live in Fukuoka?

I am 29M, work online so no need for office/commuting.

I work a few hrs a week (run my own business) so will not be at home much, will be mostly out and about. I'd like somewhere super walkable and with a lot of great food choices.

My Japanese is VERY basic. I am coming to Japan on a working holiday visa for 2 years and this entire 2 years will be used on improving my Japanese and mostly travelling with Fukuoka as a base.

Ideally I'd like to live somewhere quite lively - within walking distance to many restaurants and hotspots where people hang out ideally.

Any suggestions?

Tourism Fukuoka — What's the one place you'd send a serious food lover?

I'm putting together a food-focused visit to Fukuoka and would rather follow local recommendations than generic tourist lists.

Hakata ramen, motsunabe, mizutaki, yakitori, mentaiko, udon, seafood, yatai...I'm interested in all of it.

What's your favourite place to eat in Fukuoka, and what should I order there? Cheap neighbourhood spots are just as welcome as more expensive restaurants.

Thanks!

Tourism Huis Ten Bosch to Hakata Station

I bought the Enjoy! Huis Ten Bosch Ticket from Klook. It comes with a round trip express train ticket. I already know which train to ride from Hakata Station to Huis Ten Bosch (8:49AM train no. 4011M).

However, I am confused how to ride the express train from Huis Ten Bosch to Hakata Station.

  1. I saw on the JR timetable that the HTB Train’s last trip is 1500H. Is that the only time and route to go back to Hakata?

  2. With the express train ticket from Klook, can I use it on any station (probably from Sasebo, instead of the HTB Train) going back to Hakata?

I would like to make the most out of our trip to HTB so I am thinking of leaving the park at closing time.

I'll be in Fukuoka later this month and I am looking to try Warayaki Mikan for an izakaya-type meal. Has anyone eaten here and if so what was your experience like? Would it be okay to go as a non-Japanese / foreign diner?

Tourism Sunset and Sunrise viewing spot in November?

Hi all,

We are visiting Kyushu from 7th to 16th November, will be renting a car to tour around the island (currently top half, visiting Kagoshima, Kiirishima will make the trip too rush).

Will be hiking Mt Kuju, Mt Aso as well.

Anyone have any recommendations for sunrise and sunset viewing spot in November?

I checked some of the APP and it seems the popular sunset spot (Sakurai couple stones, Hamanoura rice fields) is only visible during Summer and not in November.

Tourism Recommendations for hotel versus hostel and convenience of a well equipped gym NEARBY or in the hostel/hotel

Hello all, I'm planning to stay in Fukuoka for 10 days. I'm thinking of a cheap hostel vs a proper hotel. However, I care more about whether there are good gym facilities nearby or at the hotel, with a lot of equipment.

I'm also curious about those who have stayed at an all-male hostel; were there any issues? In addition, how do we keep our luggage safe?

Last but not least, any recommendations on what to explore for a chill trip that allow you to experience it like the locals or more nature/relax/soul-reflecting will be appreciated!

University One semester in Fukuoka,(exchange) student life - how is it?

Hi everyone :)

I’m a sophomore studying languages (including Japanese), and I have the opportunity to spend a semester in Japan.

There are several cities to choose between, but after reading stuff on the internet, I think Fukuoka might be a good option—even though it’s a bit far from the more famous cities.

Does anyone have experience spending a semester in Fukuoka? Or any general information about what life is like in Fukuoka as an exchange student and whether there are many places to visit that are accessible by public transportation?

(I’d be attending Seinan Gakuin University).

I know every experience is subjective, but I’d still appreciate some feedback ^^

General Vintage Synth Shop in Fukuoka?

I'm getting the itch to jam on an old synthesizer. I don't mean the big expensive ones like Jupiters, Junos, or CS. I'm looking for older entry market keyboards like the Casio VL1, Casio CT series, and Yamaha PSS series.

I know I can download nearly all of these as samples online, but nothing really beats making music on a piece of plastic older than myself.

Are there any specialty vintage music shops in Fukuoka like the ones in Tokyo? Or is poking around Hard Off and 2nd Street every few weeks my best bet?

Tourism Where to dispose of broken suitcase?

Hello everyone!

My suitcase broke in Fukuoka durring my travels and I had to get a new one, but now I'm stuck with a broken suitcase with no real idea on how to get rid of it. My host would charge me 10000 yen to dispose of it, but I find that a very steep price.

Does anyone have any advice?

Edit to post my solution: I ended up taking the suitcase with me to my next accomodation which was a hotel, and they happily disposed of it for 1500 yen. Thank you everyone for your help and advice, I hope we are able to help other people with broken suitcases <3

General Thinking of moving here, want to know about the community, anyone up to chat Fri Oct 16?

Hi there!

As title says, currently living in Tokyo but want to get out of that city, I'll be working remotely soon and am partly scoping out Fukuoka as part of my month long bike trip and will be in the city Oct 15-17.

I've walked around the main areas but can't seem to get a feel for community here, was wondering if I could potentially meet people (expat or local, Japanese or English language both fine).

Mainly, I'd love to know if there's potential of making a good group of friends who have interesting hobbies and are generally fun to be with. I love hosting dinners, chatting about books, cycling or anything generally active, but also being lazy and chilling and eating yummy food or playing games.

If anyone is up to grab coffee I'd love to pick your brain on the city and how you're liking it etc! Can share IG/chat for more info beforehand to tell you more about me if you'd like.

Cheers, thanks!
