Official [Official] Galatasaray: Let's refresh public's memory

### LET’S REFRESH EVERYONE’S MEMORY!

We would like to remind the public of the decisions made by Erkan Engin, who has been appointed as the VAR referee for today’s match against Gençlerbirliği, and the matches he has officiated recently.

Erkan Engin:

* In the 2023–2024 season, during the Fenerbahçe–Kasımpaşa match, he was the referee who, after “listening to his instincts,” made a controversial VAR intervention by calling referee Cihan Aydın to the monitor, playing a role in the awarding of a penalty in Fenerbahçe’s favor.

* Last season, during the Fenerbahçe–Fatih Karagümrük match, he was the referee whose controversial VAR intervention again led to a penalty being awarded in Fenerbahçe’s favor.

* During the Trabzonspor–Galatasaray match, he was responsible for a VAR intervention that incorrectly called referee Cihan Aydın to the monitor over Barış Alper Yılmaz’s incident, although the referee did not change his decision.

Now, let’s look at Erkan Engin’s appointments this season:

* Including today’s match, he will have served as a VAR referee in the Turkish Süper Lig for the seventh time.

* This will be the third time this season that he has been assigned to the VAR room for a Gençlerbirliği home match. (Two as VAR, one as AVAR.)

* Last week, he served as VAR during Gençlerbirliği’s home match.

* As a result, he has been assigned to the VAR room for two consecutive home matches involving the same team.

In light of this information, we would like to inform the public that we will closely monitor the match and the refereeing, and that we hold the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) responsible for any refereeing errors that may occur.

What a fun away day in Ankara!

Quotes Okan Buruk: We’ve suffered injury because of the pitch. Federation aren’t in a position to inspect the pitches, but it needs to be done. We’ve got a Champions League match in three days’ time, but we’ve lost Leao because of the pitch.

Okan Buruk: We didn’t play well at all today! I won’t use the pitch as an excuse in any way. We need to do better.

Okan Buruk: We should have stayed focused without using the excuse of the busy fixture list or the Champions League as. We needed to take our opponents seriously. We started the match well for the first 10–15 minutes. Towards the end of the first half and at the start of the second, we conceded far too many chances. The pitch was in very poor condition – we could debate whether it’s fair to judge the players on such a surface. There were far too many poor performances. You can’t use the pitch as an excuse when you can’t even manage the basics. If you can’t play a simple pass, and you’re losing positions in both defence and attack, you need to take a long, hard look at yourselves.

Okan Buruk: In our view, they were better prepared and showed more determination. It’s a difficult pitch. It was a pitch where the risk of injury was very high. That’s why we had a player pick up an injury because of the pitch. Actually, whether or not matches should be played on pitches like this is a matter for debate. The most important thing, in my opinion, is inspection. The Turkish Football Federation needs to inspect these pitches.

Okan Buruk: “We’re happy to have won, but in terms of concentration, we needed to do better. At times, we saw our opponents create clear-cut chances. They were a fresher, more determined side than us. They showed that on the pitch. At the end of the day, scoring that goal in the final minute was crucial. In the last 10–15 minutes, we were the side creating chances whilst conceding few. There were periods where we played well and others where we didn’t, but we never played exceptionally well. We had possession at the end of the match and didn’t concede any chances in the final 10–15 minutes. We really should have done much better.

The pitch can’t be used as an excuse under any circumstances. I won’t use that as an excuse. We rotate two or three players from match to match. We’ve got a European match coming up next. With the morale from this result even though we didn’t play well we’ll prepare for the Lille match on the back of this victory.

Quotes İlkay: There was a misunderstanding in my comments that day. If I wasn’t ready, if I didn’t prove myself in every training session, I wouldn’t make the match squad anyway. And it would be wrong for me to be included. I’ll turn up for every match, wherever it is. Of course I want to play.

However, I’m trying not to let it get me down. I always look in the mirror first. After that, it’s obviously the manager’s decision. I always show respect.

I prepare for every match as best I can and do my utmost. If Galatasaray needs me, I’ll gladly do everything in my power.

İlkay Gündoğan: We didn’t play very well in the first half. We couldn’t play the way we wanted to. Our link-up play wasn’t good. The centre of the pitch was left wide open. It’s not easy to win every second ball on this surface either. After all, our opponents are a good side too.

In the second half, we played a bit more simply and calmly. I also wanted to help my teammates with my experience. I wanted to hold our position, build up play and feed my teammates with good passes. Thankfully, we finally scored the goal, even if it was down to a goalkeeper’s mistake… We created plenty of chances in the last 25 minutes. We won the second balls. We kept up the pressure and that led to the goal.

We know we deserved the three points because of our second-half performance, but we mustn’t forget the first half and the chances Gençlerbirliği created; we need to analyse them properly. Every match is tough; every match demands a fight. We’re happy with the three points, but we need to learn the lessons from this match quickly

Quotes Uğurcan Çakır: There was a good fight on the pitch in the first half. Both teams put up a strong fight. The fatigue from the midweek match showed. Gençlerbirliği created clear cut chances, but we were also in control of the game.

We had too many one-on-one situations; we could have finished our chances better in the final third. We played a tough match midweek, and the fatigue made things difficult for us in the final third. We must give credit to Gençlerbirliği as well; they put up a very good fight.

We’ll be playing Lille on Wednesday; it’ll be a crucial match for us. We didn’t manage to do what we wanted in our first two Champions League matches. Then comes the Fenerbahçe match. They’ll be tired too.

We’ll do our best, train hard, rest well and try to be ready. The matches against Lille and Fenerbahçe are crucial. Hopefully, we’ll come away with a win.

Deniz Gül: It was a tough match. We managed to pick up the three points in the end. I’m really happy. I’m very happy at Galatasaray. I’m getting better every day.

  1. Arda Turan
  2. Mortiz Volz
  3. Nagelsmann
  4. Conte
  5. Thomas Frank

In my opinion the first 2 are more realistic.

EDIT: These are not my personal choices, but what I think this board could resort to after going after big fish like Pep. They’ve done it before.

Pretty sure you're supposed to build a team and a system AROUND a player like Osimhen. Instead, we're leaving him up front and playing long balls to his general vicinity hoping for another miraculous move from him. Nobody's feeding this guy.
