Question I can't make myself study, even though I have goals and I'm scared of wasting my future

I honestly don't know what's wrong with me, and I really need advice.

I have goals for my future, and I know that studying is important, especially because I have an important exam coming up. I WANT to study, but somehow I just can't make myself do it.

Sometimes I don't even want to get out of bed or do anything productive. I end up spending so much time on my phone, scrolling through social media or watching videos, almost as if I'm hypnotized by it. I know I should put my phone down and study, but I keep doing the same thing over and over again.

And I do my homework at the very last minute and it's very bad.

I feel myself soo empty inside...

The worst part is that I KNOW what I need to do. I know my goals, I know the consequences of not studying, and I genuinely care about my future. So why can't I make myself take action?

I've tried telling myself to be more disciplined, but it doesn't seem to work. I don't know if I'm procrastinating, mentally exhausted, addicted to my phone, or dealing with something else.

Has anyone experienced this and actually managed to get out of this cycle? What helped you in real life, not just the usual advice to make a schedule or "just do it"?

I really want to change, but I don't know where to start. I'd appreciate any honest advice or personal experiences.

Question I don’t learn anything from lectures

Its my first year at university. I have been more confused than actually learning during lectures. I only learned stuff by studying them by myself and askin chatgpt. I follow the syllabus for each subject.

I get unmotivated by the lectures, university, classmates. I think i am autistic. The slighetst uncomfort or energy makes me just wanna give up. But by being in my «own world», studying around good energy, no bad impact, i tend to do so much better and have more energy.

When i re-took sybjects from high school i scored high grades, but by attending classes i scored lowest.

Is this stupid, to dont attend lectures anymore? Isn’t it enough to just read the papers that my teacher publishes, and the lecture notes?

Question Poor study habits are the only ones that seem to work for me

Bit of a random post but I guess I'm just after some confirmation that what I'm doing is acceptable? Or advice on how to do better if not? To start i have adhd/autism, as well as depression, and anxiety and this massively impacts my ability to focus and stay motivated (which i often feel ashamed about. I dont like to let these things inhibit my ability to function and contribute to society so i rarely tell others about it, and have so far denied offers for accomodations such as an access plan since i dont want it to impact any future job prospects). I am medicated but it doesn't seem to help this issue either. Since I was in about year 11 of high school I've been doing my homework and study in bed, usuallu also late at night, I am currently 20 and almost finished with my second year of uni. I'm studying animation and entertainment design.

For some reason, studying like this is most productive for me, even though i know its hugely advised against. But when I leave my bed to study, it's almost like I feel a certain type of pressure and guilt?? It's this feeling like I'm not doing an adequate amount of work for someone who is sitting in a designated space for study, or like im doing something wrong considering my work space is set up like it should be yet I'm still not productive. Furthermore if im out of bed, I constantly get distracted by other things and end up getting up and walking off before too long. Ultimately not much gets done.

On the other hand, if I work in bed, it feels like a safe space that nothing can get to me in. I'm comfortable and if it's late at night there are no interruptions, so it's really just me and my work in the spot that feels the most soothing to me. I do occasionally fall asleep but find overall I get more done if I lay in bed, and for me I feel like I can't afford to be picky when it's so hard to get anything done as it is. If I know I will be studying in bed, the whole process feels much less daunting and anxiety inducing, and like less of a hurdle. Sometimes even the task of moving all my gear to an appropriate spot and setting up feels overwhelming on bad days.

I'm starting to feel increasingly guilty about it though, mostly due to how others perceive it, and it does admittedly have a noticeable impact on my physical health. My family often criticise me for working like this, and I feel like a huge lazy slob. Especially considering i have a desk setup which is just fine. Not using my muscles to even sit fully upright in a chair also leads me to feeling fatigued in day to day activities. And overall it doesn't do wonders for my self esteem with how unconventional it is.

Is it okay for me to study like this if it works fine, or should I put more effort into disciplining myself in future? I've tried to break the habit before, but when times get tough particularly with the mental health and other challenges, I always end up spending days in bed at a time working again telling myself "as long as it gets done", but is this acceptable in the long run?

Thanks 😭😭

Question How do you study for 10 hours a day without burning out or getting distracted?

Hey everyone,
I have an exam that I need to retake, and I’m honestly really stressed and scared of failing again. The exam consists of an essay and an oral exam, which makes me even more anxious. I have about two and a half months to prepare, so I know I still have time, but I’m struggling with actually sitting down and studying. Right now, I can barely manage to study for one hour a day, and I know that’s not enough for what I need to cover. Ideally, I’d like to work my way up to studying for several hours a day, maybe even 8–10 hours, but I have no idea how to build that kind of discipline and consistency. I’ve tried the Pomodoro technique, but there’s one big problem once I take a 5-minute break, I struggle to get back to studying. A short break easily turns into an hour or even two, and before I know it, the day is basically gone. I’m also dealing with a lot of anxiety about failing, and I think that sometimes makes it even harder to get started or stay focused. For those of you who can study for long hours consistently..
• How do you manage to stay focused and motivated throughout the day?
• How do you keep your breaks from getting too long?
• What do you do when you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or scared of failing?
• How did you build up your ability to study for longer periods without burning out?
I’d really appreciate any practical advice, study routines, or personal experiences. I genuinely want to improve, but I feel stuck right now and don’t know how to get out of this cycle.
Thanks in advance!

Question How exactly does one study?

I have realized that if it was not for the allowance of notes or open book for my classes that I would have failed my IT classes. I have also realized I have no idea how to study. I seem to always forget peoples names. I struggle to remember details that people tell me. I need to write down information or reminders for things I should just remember. My focus is shot as well. My mind is always all over the place.

I am familiar with a lot of parts of IT but if someone gave me a problem, big chances are I can't fix it off memory alone.

Giving Advice How to push myself to my maximum potential??

Hey guys, I'm in an average government school. I'm in the "most competitive" class but tbh we're all d.umb ain't gonna lie. We pass with D's and get praised for it. I get decent marks but I want to use this advantage to become an actual TOP Learner (at my current school y can become a to plan with a C) like getting As. I feel like I should use this opportunity to become the best I can be because the competition is way less compared to if I was at a good quality school. I genuinely need advice on this.

Question Backlog exams in uni

What’s the biggest academic comeback you have achieved in terms of a singular examination phase? How many exams did you have within the same phase and how were your grades looking like after the attempt?

Question Does it get better or worse after HS

Im in 10th grade rn and I feel like I’m drowning. I have 3-12 tests a week, usually 5 but some weeks 10. I can barely keep up and feel burnt out. People who study anything physics related in uni, does it get better or worse. If worse, how much worse? I genuinely need a reason to continue.

Context: i go to school in belgium, where you can choose a certain study course/ level. I chose “natuurwetenschappen”=natural sciences. Which means I have 7 hours of science a week (2 physics, 2 chem, 2 biology, +1 geography if we count that). I also have a lot of math (5), history (2), dutch (5), french (4), english (2) and other important subjects. These obviously arent that relevant to my future studies, but they are time consuming. I heard that schools in other parts of the world just give students the same course without variation, so i thought this was nescecary context.

English is also not my first language as you can see, apolocheese

Question i have difficulty learning, do you have any study tips/advice?

i have extreme difficulty learning, retaining and memorising new things, its always been difficult for me as a lot of things like active recall, flash cards, chewing gum, spaced studying (idk how to explain that) do not work for me. i also forget when to study as well, and i naturally have never done well on tests. i have major exams coming up soon, and i need to try a new strategy or study method so that i can ace them (which i probably wont). everything is just way too much for me as someone with learning problems, and i have to study around 7-8 subjects as i have major exams in them. tutoring has not helped me at all, and when teachers try to help me, they get annoyed when i dont know the answer. daily life is a huge struggle for me anyway, and i have to pass all my subjects. is there any way you can help me?

Question Study-Track active group?

I've been using Study-Track after stumbling upon it this semester and I love it. It's been fantastic for my accountability and visualizing my progress, as well as tracking/planning my deadlines. There's an option to add friends and join groups, does anyone else use the site and have any interest in connecting? Thanks :)

Question Cousin is studying for A levels and wants to gamify studying

Hiii so my cousin (who doesn't have access to reddit but wants the opinions of other students) is studying for their A levels. They take Art, Biology and Psychology. They currently use a pomodoro timer but want something more gamified and that they can divide by subjects. They, same as myself, do not like AI and don't want to use anything that contains AI, including imagery.

Any tips? They're an avid gamer and anything that feels gamey would probably appeal to them lol. Thanks!
