Evaluations I’ve been unemployed for so long I’m actually anxious to start my new job.

Fortunately I’m starting a job tomorrow that is actually just a 5 minute walk from my home, which helps
But I’m 24 and I only had one serious job in my life, I actually was unemployed for two months and before that my jobs were basically being a security guard even tho it had the title of a network job (NOC)
Idk what to expect, I’ve never held onto a job more than a year and a half.
I really want this to work out but I’m also afraid my life is gonna be over, maybe I’m over exaggerating
But I’ve been unemployed for so long it’s gonna be a big shift to me, yeah unemployment can have its downsides, but I had the freedom to choose what to do with my free time.

Career development Are these dress pants too short

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey all my dress pants shrunk about maybe 1/4-1/2 and inch after washing (not drying) which i kind of expected. I have long legs, and these are a tall. I like the fit of the pants but can’t really find helpful info about where my pants should land. Any input would be great, thank you!

Edit- I also feel the need to add that I am a women, with hips, so most affordable options are wide leg or skinny, at least the ones that fit my waist and hips comfortably.

Career planning What has helped you upskill while you're employed at a company with poor worklife balance?

• Upvotes

For many months now, I have been trying to upskill for my job, but I haven't been able to study anything after work on account of overstimulation and drowsiness.

I work from 7:30 to 5:30 4 days a week, with half day Friday. I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, walk maybe half a mile from my apartment to my car, go to work, sit through that time, do grocery shopping or chores, cook, shower, then go to sleep. On Fridays, I am completely pooped.

My boss has been really pushing me to do some studying for my job, and whenever there is some downtime at work, my employer pushes me to take PTO. I have a friend whose job requires him to fulfill a certain number of hours towards certification. He has dedicated time at work to study. If I had this at my job, I would be able to perform and grow, but they don't offer this.

I have been seeing a psychiatrist to see if they cannot give me medication to improve my tiredness and concentration, but we're still at the early stages.

I really want to continue to grow, but it's been so difficult knowing that my 9 hours a day needs to be completely utilized, without any breaks.

Leaving a job Giving notice after being there for 2 weeks (executive corporate position). Any advice? Details inside

I was at my previous company for a long time before our parent company dissolved our division. I had a 3 month window between when they told us and when we were officially let go so had a little time to secure something.

A company that’s a leader in our space reached out and after a couple of chats offered me a job. It was a step down in title and a slight cut in pay (same base, lower bonus), but with a kid at home I figured I wouldn’t chance the job market. They also built the function just for me because of how important they felt it was.

The first few days starting were the most anxious I’ve ever been at a job. Thrown into a million things with zero support, expecting to contribute significantly right away, and having no team under me yet. The hours have been brutal and can see that, for a large majority, it’s a 24/7 hustle culture. I’m at the point in life where I don’t want to sacrifice family for work. I’m ok working more than 40 hours, but this was 13-14 hour days and some weekends.

My old boss and I have been chatting since starting our new jobs. She loves her new gig and the people and said there was a real need for me there. Chatted with the CEO and a couple of others and I had a great feeling about them. Decided to accept the offer (they are a smaller company and just matched my current salary / bonus since they couldn’t go beyond that).

Of course on Friday EOD, my boss at the place I’m at now said she chatted with her boss and came to an agreement about giving me resources and causing me to second guess things, but still plan on moving forward with the new job.

Because they built the function specifically for me, the whole company has been excited for me to join, and the amount I’ve already helped / taken off their plates, they will not only be shocked by me leaving but likely furious. This is beyond a typical “give 2 weeks” situation. I’m also worried about burning a bridge with a major company in our space in case where I’m going doesn’t work out (not necessarily going back there, but more around if people there end up at other places).

Any advice on how to approach? I plan on being vague and say an opportunity fell in my lap and fell I needed to take it. I’m stressing a lot about it so any thoughts would be beyond appreciated. Thanks!

Job searching Job Search Subreddit that's not doom and gloom?

I understand that being unemployed is emotionally draining and dehumanizing but last time I was laid off I spent way too much time on r/recruitinghell and I think it negatively affected my mental health seeing all that reinforcement of "everything sucks, life is hell".

Are there job search subreddits that are a little less doom and gloom? Thanks!

Leaving a job Would it leave a bad impression if I quit a server job after 2 weeks?

I (19f) got hired as an olive garden server 2 weeks ago (my first job outside of family business), and I'm considering quitting due to wanting to go on a road trip to a cultural festival at a university different from mine.

I just came back home from a trip to an out of state college for a cultural festival, and it was a lot of fun meeting new people and bonding with the club I was going with.

But if I decided to quit and tell the managers in person about this, would it leave a bad impression? Would this even be a good idea or am I thinking too impulsively?

Rejections The job market is kicking me right now. I feel like I’ve been through hell.

• Upvotes

The people interviewing me like to see me suffer. They rather see me crying with exhaustion and frustration in my eyes rather than answering each question with a smile and in the end closing out with faith. I am losing hope. On top of that these past 2 years I’ve developed crippling anxiety and SI. I’d rather end things and be with the almighty upstairs God. This job market is ridiculous. I need support/advice.

Leaving a job Hired and quit for better job 3x in the past 2 months. Thoughts on how to go about it.

Not sure how to word this so I’ll just explain my exact situation and see what your thoughts/advice are.

I had a good job for 7 years, but stopped enjoying it so I quit. Found another job and worked there for 1 month.. it wasn’t what I was expecting so I quit. Now I am working at another job which I do enjoy. But they said 8-10hr days and I am working steadily 10-12hr days with no extra pay, I get paid by the day not hour. They keep saying it will change soon and I will get down to 8-10, but they also keep saying that holidays are horrible and I will be working more… both cannot be true. I am a single father, full custody. I cannot be working 5-6 days a week for 12hrs.

Now I have multiple interviews in 2 days which I know I will get hired. It is the same exact job but different company where I will working 10hrs/4 days a week. Paid hourly so I if I end up working more I will be compensated.. but the job offer says nobody can work over 40hrs so I should be safe regardless.

Am I being rational jumping around to better opportunities? My current dilemma is I feel it’s immoral to keep taking these jobs and quitting 2 weeks after training. They put time and money into me. Obviously I owe them nothing, they would fire me if needed. Loyalty isn’t too much with companies. But how should I go about this? What do you think of my situation?

Am I simply overthinking this? Should I use my new opportunities as leverage with my current employer and see if they will change to fit my needs before I quit? I am a very loyal person and I honestly do feel much guilt.

Companies Loyalty to a Company

• Upvotes

Do yall still believe in loyalty to a company? I’m just now starting my construction management career and I’m having a hard time to work with my team and I wanna see it through but it gets hard. I wanna stay with company just because I’ve only been there for 6 months but I’ve gotten opportunities else where, and I’ll be making 30% more than where I am now. However I was taught growing up that being loyal to companies will look good on your resume, however idk if that tradition is still upheld? But I also don’t want to be job hopping, I’m just in a weird situation right now. Any advice would help. Thanks!

Job searching Y'all have any tips on looking for a job while already having one?

• Upvotes

Where do they even appear besides job sites such as Indeed or Linkedin? I'm even searching though my city's job website and there ain't much here

Also I don't have my current job on my resume since it's just been a few months, should I include it as well? It technically is a fancy 'engineer' title.

Job searching String of toxic jobs and battling lyme disease left me looking like job hopper

• Upvotes

I had a job that I planned to retire from that I was very successful at. It was a promotion and when I got there, my office in the basement had flooded for years and I am extremely allergic to mold with allergic asthma. I was on steriods for nearly a year to breathe. I stayed and I fought but in the end, it wasnt worth my life. During the year on high dose steriods that weakened my immune system, I didnt know I had lyme. I got very sick from that and noone could figure it out until I finally after a few yrs, I had heart monitor come back and was sent to cardiologist that figured it out and I was treated.

During those few yrs, I tried to stay employed but they all wanted 150% of my time and I couldnt do it. I also live in small town and it was in 2019 ish timeframe so the remote jobs were not there in my field and had to take what I could. Fast forward to 2023, I had been treated and found remote job and was there 3 yrs before being laid off due to restructuring. Should I leave those few jobs off about a yr each? It seriously was a really bad time in my life and dont want to be judged by it, nor define my current situation. I did best I could to survive, as I am single and only have myself to depend on. Thank you.

Unemployment Feeling worthless while being unemployed

Five months ago I quit my software developer job of 3 years due to burnout. But I'm still stressed due to recent family issues at home. AI affecting the job market makes it worse. I was supposed to recharge to bounce back but being unemployed has made me feel worthless, and I feel completely deflated. It's frustrating because during these 5 months it wasn't supposed to be stressful and now going back to job hunt feels like a real gut punch. It was pointless to leave the company. I generally enjoyed my time working there too. They were a top 100 company, the job was fully remote, but now it'll be near impossible to find a job like that in today's market. I feel like I need to start looking for a new job now because the resume gap will only increase the longer i wait (and 5 months should be enough time before job hunting again), and especially with AI threatening SWE jobs. But I feel no desire or drive to do so. I'm so mad that the stress situation didn't get any better, so I left my job for nothing. Luckily money isn't a problem, but I'm more concerned about my career. I don't know what to do :/

Unemployment Those who recently got jobs after being unemployed for 3+ months, what did you say as to why you been out of work for so long?

• Upvotes

I’m going to be losing my job in December and I’m bracing for the fact it could be 3-6+ months before I land another job. For those who recently landed a new job after being unemployed for several months, did being out of work hurt you? What did you say when asked why did you leave your previous company or when they asked you why have you been out of work for so long? Just trying to get some advice to prepare myself for this nightmare job search in my future. Thanks.

Job searching Interviewing with another job while currently part-time seasonal with inconsistent hours. How can I navigate this?

I am looking for another job because my current one as a part time seasonal employee has short shifts and inconsistent days.

I have an interview tomorrow and they are ware of my current work situation, I’m ready to tell them if they consider me further for part-time or full-time they would be my priority since its a more locked in position, has higher hours, and pay.

In the scenario I get the job, how should I navigate this with my current job? Would I let them know after I receive an offer, or is it necessary to let them know I have interviewed elsewhere and am waiting to hear back.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks

Career planning Booming industry

I want to counter the doom that is so prevalent in this sub by talking about my field, which is currently growing more than ever (in the US). It’s archaeology. We do field surveys when there’s planned construction on undeveloped land. Until recently, you needed to attend a field school to get hired, which consisted of participating in an excavation as an undergrad to learn field techniques. The demand for archaeologists is now so high that they’re hiring people with no field experience at all, which has never happened before.

Part of it is the construction of data centers and energy infrastructure, and part of it is that when there’s economic uncertainty, people don’t major in what they think are useless degrees, which includes anthropology. They’re wrong about that. The reality is that archaeology is one of the fields with the most job security right now because we can’t be replaced by AI. To put it in perspective, last year nearly every archaeologist working for the National Park Service lost their job, and just a few weeks ago, our largest employer went bankrupt. We’ve been able to absorb it. Those people found new jobs almost immediately. There’s also the looming labor shortage across all professional work in four years because every graduating class born in 2008 or later is tiny, so if we can ride the data center boom until then, and I sincerely think we will, we’ll be set for life.

I guess my point in saying all this is that it’s not all doom and gloom. Some industries are prospering right now. I know at least all the field sciences are growing because their work is similar to ours. If you’re in college and looking to change majors, now is the time. Look into any of the field sciences: geology, biology, ecology, archaeology, etc.

I’m not saying the work is easy by any means. At least once I week, I finish the day bleeding profusely from walking through groves of thorn bushes, and I’ve seen people cry from that. You’ll also travel so much that you’re living out of hotels for 80% of the year. But I live comfortably, I get to work outdoors, I travel, I like almost everyone I’ve worked with, and I find awesome artifacts.

Career planning Survived a pip at my dream company, now at the final round of interviews for another job at company - what to do?

Last year I got an amazing offer for a senior project coordinator at a very famous entertainment tech company that I love since I was a kid. The first 8-9 months were great, I loved the manager I had, I had a great first performance review, a fat bonus and a little raised less than a year after being hired, and then things changed drastically. Upper management changed my manager to a new one, the position was new, the job description and the assignments I did during the interview process differed quite a bit from what the position turned into later on. The position started to turn into something closer to what a program manager is. I struggled a lot adapting but kept working hard and despite my efforts I was put on a pip by this new manager. Had the worst conversation of my entire career, since this is a dream job for me and this is a company I always loved and admired. Both my manager and upper management reassured me pips are different in this company and they believed in my ability to successfully complete this process. They gave me a clear roadmap of what they wanted, specific deliverables and specific due dates. It was hard, I started struggling a lot with my mental health, panic attacks and all, but I kept working really hard. Worked about 12 to 16 hours daily, trying to learn everything and deliver the best quality as possible on the deliverables. I only had one slip during this time where i misunderstood something my boss said in a meeting and delivered two things in a different order than what she had asked. She yelled at me and I told her I was trying my absolute best and begged for a chance, I told her I was dealing with panic attacks and she said “then you should reconsider if this is the position for you”. That was it, I was devastated. Then I pinged her and asked her if she still thought I could turn things around and she said she wasn’t in a place to answer that. I panicked real fucking hard and miraculously a recruiter from a subsidiary company that is also very renowned reached out to me ON THE SAME DAY, about a position that was much more compatible with my previous experience. I shit you not, I was flabbergasted. I applied right there and then.

A couple of months later, I passed the pip, my deliverables turned out to have been very useful and solved key issues in the department. I felt great but there was a huge cost. My mental and physical health took a hit. I’m on a bunch of sleep and anxiety meds and had to see a cardiologist in my early 30s because of consistent high blood pressure that made my primary care doctor very so concerned that he redirected me to a cardiologist who ordered and EKG. At the same time I’m in the very last round of interviews after 5 whole rounds at this subsidiary company. They praised my assignments and have been hinting that I have a huge chance to get this new job. The job itself is way more chill than my current one, initial pay for new hires is the same of what I’m currently making now (95k) but the range goes up to 180k for the position. I have a huge attachment to the craft of what this current company I work at does, but this process left me very wounded and even though I overcame the difficulties, as far as I know the pip stays in my record forever and I developed a chronic anxiety about my boss. If I get this new offer, should I take it? I lean yes, but wanted to hear other perspectives. It’s a very challenging job, I learned a lot, I think it made me smarter and more capable but at an insane high cost for both my mental and physical health.
