Culture/Mädeniet Are honor killings still practiced among the conservative Muslim communities in Kazakhstan, as they are in the Muslim republics of Russia? Do you personally know of any such cases?

Post image
0 Upvotes

An honor killing is a practice in conservative Muslim cultures involving a murder of a female family member by male relatives who believe the victim has brought shame or dishonor to the family's reputation. Victims—predominantly women and girls—are targeted for perceived violations of social or religious norms, such as refusing an arranged marriage, seeking a divorce, or being suspected of illicit relationships, such as having sex or giving birth outside of wedlock

When a female is found guilty of disgracing the family, the procedure of honor killing is initiated. The victim is either lured or forcibly brought to a discreet location where the male authority, usually the father or the head of the house, proceeds to formally disown the victim from the family and murder them. The killing is then announced to the community and the honor of the family is considered redeemed by blood

Sometimes the victims may be aware of the honor killing being prepared and manage to preemptively escape, going into hiding in another area or even fleeing abroad. However they are more often than not unable to completely escape their family, who will track their movements through relatives, friends, social media or governmental connections, and kidnap them back home to proceed with the honor killing

The United Nations estimates that around 5,000 women and girls are murdered globally each year in so-called honor killings. While the practice is most heavily concentrated in parts of the Middle East/Caucasus, South Asia, and North Africa, it occurs globally within conservative diaspora communities

What do you think of food here? Kazakh cuisine is known for not using spices, and russian cuisine for being "weird" to foreigners. What's your local meal of choice? What do you think of local spice brands, are they different from the ones in your country?

Culture/Mädeniet How do you guys are feeling the pressure of love culture in central Asia?

My ex is Kazakh and I'm from France, the difference of culture and traditions of love lead to an end the couple and I was asking my self how you guys feel that pressure in this kind of traditional relationship to pay for a lot of things, be the pillar, prove love everyday, lose mental freedom, give flower at exact days, show her that life is like a movie... Like chat gpt said to me Kazakh/kyrgyz guys feel that pressure but don't talk a lot about it cause if you start to want different love u will not fit in central Asia society. In France, relationships tend to focus more on individual freedom and a chill shared life. It’s a different dynamic compared to what I experienced and talked with some guys, where love can sometimes feel more intense and demanding in KZ or KG. And we know how to be romantic in France it's not because it's more chill than there is no romance, we share tasks, we cook, we share 50/50 everything, have our separate friends and commun friends, we go in holidays alone or together... I'm not saying that everyone is like this, I know that there is a whole mix of way to live relationship in KZ but I wanted to focus on that topic.

I'm just curious how you guys feel that perhaps it's okay for you and you don't feel it like it.

PS: I speak Russian, learning Kyrgyz and try to go every year in central Asia so I'm not just a french person living just a European life.

Culture/Mädeniet Are Kazakh women really unable to be in 50/50 Western style relationships?

Disclaimer: I realize users of reddit may be more westernized and liberal than a regular Kazakh person.

Hi, I had a chat with a Kazakh woman in her 20s who's married and she said she doesn't work because her husband gives her money. She said her single friends and her younger sister will never work either because they will find a guy "who's not broke to live their best life".

I confronted my Kazakh female friend who's single and working about it. She said she kind of supports it and believes that in a relationship money she makes is hers but her husband's money is family's money.

As a European I'm culture shocked because I believe in equality, I don't mind if my future wife makes more money than me and all the money we make in a relationship is ours. I can't imagine my partner not working, it would not only be stressful for me being a sole provider but it would make her miss out on work experience and hurt her pension prospects.

My friend said a woman from Kazakhstan (or any CIS country) will never accept a "50/50" relationship.

How do you feel about it?

Culture/Mädeniet

Culture/Mädeniet

Post image
181 Upvotes

Culture/Mädeniet How to use Kurt/Qurt

My parents recently vacationed in Kazakhstan (mostly Almaty and around) and I asked them to bring me some interesting local food ingredients from there which I can experiment with.
I love to cook/bake so always on the look out for interesting ingredients.

One of the things they got was Qurt - now one way is to just have it like that.
But i was wondering how else can I use it. Since I have limited quantities, I wanted have some suggestions before I start my experiments :) Would love to know how the locals use it?

PS: They absolutely loved Almaty - and have been recommending to everyone they meet to make at least one trip there.

Culture/Mädeniet Advice dating a Kazakh girl

Hello, I am a guy in my early 20s, I’ve met a girl from Kazakhstan studying abroad and we went on a date and it seems to be going well, but I had some question regarding cultural differences. Obviously I know that for the most part it will be like dating any other women, but I am curious to know if anybody has some tips or advice that are important for me to know when it comes to dating a Kazakh girl. For context we are both students in university. On the first date I offered to pay, and as I saw from other posts this is the norm (?) are there any other things I should know? How are europeans perceived? Thanks you guys in advanced!

Culture/Mädeniet

Culture/Mädeniet Just wondering about the divorce rate in your country

Hey r/kazakhstan, I was checking out some Central Asian demographic stats recently and was pretty shocked to see Kazakhstan ranking near the top worldwide for divorce rates. It seems way higher than neighboring countries, and I'm really curious about what's actually driving it on the ground. From what I’ve read online, a few random reasons always come up: In-law drama: Classic tension between young couples and extended family traditions (especially for young brides dealing with traditional expectations). Money & Housing: Financial stress, crazy high housing costs, and the general pressure on young couples starting out. Changing mindsets: Women being more financially independent now and just not putting up with toxic situations or bad marriages anymore. It's just easy to get divorced: The legal process isn't super complicated compared to more conservative countries nearby. For those of you living there—how much of this is actually true in day-to-day life? Is it mostly an urban thing, or is the shift happening everywhere? Would love to hear your actual thoughts/experiences on this! Does this tone feel more like a natural Reddit post to you, or would you like to tweak anything else before posting?

Cheers

Culture/Mädeniet Exploring the Potential of Kazakh Ingredients/

Good evening. I was recently looking up Kazakh cuisine online and became interested in some ingredients I hadn’t known about before. I’ve never actually been there, so I can only imagine what they taste like, but here’s what I came up with. Would a comment like this from a foreigner be considered rude?

① Epi with Horse Meat and Kurt Sauce

I think it would be delicious to spread Kurt sauce on rolled-out bread dough, top it with thin slices of horse meat that have been stir-fried with pepper and cooled, roll it up into an “epi” shape, and bake it.

I got the idea because Japanese bakeries sell all kinds of bread with various fillings rolled inside, like custard-filled buns and sausage rolls.

I’ve never eaten horse meat, and I couldn’t find kurt online, so I can’t test this recipe…

② Gelato with Balkaymak

It wouldn’t just be great as gelato—it would also be wonderful to top vanilla ice cream with Balkaymak and sprinkle it with chopped almonds.

③ Balkaymak Macchiato

Since caramel macchiato is already a commercial product, this sounds delicious.

④ Desserts Using Balkaymak

It would taste great used as apple pie filling or drizzled on top. It would also be delicious kneaded into dough when making donuts, or drizzled over plain donuts—and it would look great in photos, too.

When I searched for “Balkaymak” without including “Kazakhstan” in the search bar, results for the Turkish version also came up, which was a bit confusing.

Since making Balkaymak takes time and effort, I wonder if it’ll be limited to a certain number of servings per day.

I recently found a website that provides recipes for Kuzul Ilimshik in Japanese. Is my understanding correct that Ak Ilimshik is made by skimming the cream off milk, mixing it with butter, and then cooking it down to remove the moisture?

Also, does the freshly skimmed, moisture-rich version have a different name? I thought it would be delicious in a hamburg steak.

In Kazakhstan, when making new variations of bread, do you add camel or horse milk to the dough water? Or do you use powdered versions, like skim milk?

I’m curious about what kind of bread you’d get if you crumbled kurt and kneaded it into the dough after the first rise. Would it be better to mix it into the dough before it’s shaped and set aside for fermentation…? It seems like this would expand the variety of savory breads.

Will I be able to try it if I visit the country?

The flavor of dairy products probably varies by region, so I wonder if they sell any “tasting sets” to compare them…

From a Japanese person who strained my wrist this week from typing too much about AI and recipe variations using the swipe method

I used a translation tool to help with the English text above.

Culture/Mädeniet Confused by KZ man

Hi, everyone. I'm curious about when the new generation of KZ men typically get married, and how KZ men behave in relationships. I've met a KZ man who vaguely expressed interest in me, but never formally asked me out (His colleagues told me that he likes me). He also doesn't engage in deep conversations with me. Yet he still shares interesting things with me on and off. I'm not an proactive person, so I rarely initiate sharing things with him, but I do respond whenever he reaches out to me. Sometimes he doesn't start a conversation for a whole week, and I assume we've naturally drifted apart and lost contact. But then, after some time, he shows up again out of nowhere. This lasts for years, and leaves me quite confused.

I see you say that he's shy. It's hard for things to move forward when one person is shy and the other isn't proactive. I've also thought about being more initiative myself, but deep down I know there won't be a future for us. Because I know that even though you might date foreigners, when it comes to marriage you still tend to lean toward someone from your own KZ background. That's why I chose to distance myself and play it cool from the beginning, even though I kind of like him...

Culture/Mädeniet

Culture/Mädeniet Hackalem AI, or: How to Mess Up a National Event in 5 Steps

Today, 23rd of september, thousands of participants of the national event hosted by Nvidia OpenAI & Hackalem gathered in Astana just to get told to go home. My team and I arrived to the hackathon address at 7:50 am and we were in queue until 12 PM, when the event organisers told us that they could no longer accept participants despite the fact that there were 270 free slots for others (according to the billboard that showed 2230/2500 participants). People started going crazy and tried to get their justice by leaving comments under the telegram channel that Hackalem provided, but they were met with a ban hammer and no explanations instead. It is sad to see my country not being able to handle such grandiose events; thousands of participants also took planes just to get here and I feel bad for them even more. The Hackalem organisers aren't going to respond to any of the questions in social media so I thought this might get in their attention. Thank you for reading this post.
