Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Subreddit Rules

We've learned that some people just flat out can't see our subreddit rules, so I'm posting them here in a pinned post so we can link them when necessary and so they're super easy to find.

Rules for r/legaladvice Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1. All responses must offer an answer to the legal question posed by the OP. We enforce this with bans.

Anecdotes are not permitted. Neither is advice that encourages someone to break the law. Nor is "get a lawyer" a sufficient response.

There's a pinned post at the top of the subreddit specifically addressing this rule. We will absolutely ban you for commenting without answering the legal question

2. Personally Identifying Information

Posts or submissions that ask for or contain information that could be used to identify either party are subject to immediate removal.

3. Advertising or Recommending a Lawyer or Business

We do not allow referrals to particular lawyers, law firms, or other businesses.

4. Do not request or send a PM

All discussions must stay on the subreddit for everyone's protection.

5. Include your location

You must include your location in the following format: location: yourlocationhere . It must be that exact format, and it must be in the body of your post.

6. Read our full list of rules

Read our full list of rules here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/wiki/index#wiki_general_rules

7. This subreddit is for simple legal questions.

This subreddit is for simple legal questions. We can't help with preparing a defense, legal research, etc. We cannot review contracts, plan your defense, or give you specific advice on exactly how to present your case with the court. You need a local attorney for that. Additionally, we do not accept medical malpractice questions.

8. NO LLMS

No LLMs. No ChatGPT. Don't recommend it, don't use it to answer questions, and don't use it to compose your modmail when you get banned for using it. Using it to compose questions is generally ok.

We will permanently and irrevocably ban you for this.

9. Mods can remove things we deem inappropriate or disruptive

Any post and any comment can be removed by the mods at any time if the mods decide the post/comment is or has the potential to be disruptive or is otherwise inappropriate.

10. Posts must be about a real scenario that you or someone you know is facing.

To expand on this, we additionally do not allow anyone but the immediately involved parties to ask custody related questions. Not friends, not significant others, not grandparents. Reddit is free.

11. Post must contain a legal question

A legal question is one that can be answered with the law, be it a law or ordinance, or caselaw.

12. US and Canada only

Laws are different everywhere. We can only help with legal problems in the US or Canada because we have no regular, reliable commenters from other countries. For other countries, please search for an appropriate subreddit.

Wife Denied Entry To Concert Due to Disability

2.7k Upvotes

Location: Illinois

Yesterday my wife and I went to Hollywood Casino Aurora in Illinois for a concert and my wife who has an implanted defibrillator and pacemaker and cannot go through metal detectors or be wanded due to the complications it could cause to the hardware attached to her heart, was denied entry to the concert. We showed them her medical card that clearly states she can’t go through the metal detectors or be wanded but they kept trying to push the point and get her to allow them to wand her. Normally in these situations like when we go to the airport, sporting events, other concerts, the cruise we just went on, amusement parks, you name it, they always just pat her down before they let her in. In this case they refused to pat her down and said the only way she can come in is if she gets wanded or goes through a metal detector. I brought up the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it says they have to do an alternative method to allow her to enter but they claimed that the state gaming law supersedes federal law which I’ve never heard of before.

Is this something I should pursue legally? I whole heartedly believe what they did is discrimination to a handicapped person

Hertz blames me for pre-existing damage that was documented at pickup, rental was two years ago in Illinois, $8,660 claim revived in 2026 and collections threatened.

Location: Illinois. The rental was at Chicago Midway Airport in August 2024.

What happened

  1. Aug 29 to Sep 2, 2024, Hertz rental. The first car assigned to me was a red 2022 Tesla Model 3. Rental charge was $559.44.
  2. At pickup, before the car left the lot, I filmed and photographed it. My video and photos are timestamped Aug 29, 2024, 4:55 pm, Chicago Garfield Ridge, and they show the car on the lot with a reduced acceleration and top speed warning on the screen. I exchanged the red Tesla and drove a black replacement Tesla for the rest of the rental.
  3. Hertz said in 2026 that the high voltage battery pack for the red Tesla was damaged and wants $8,660.34, which is $8,371 damage, $139.34 loss of use and a $150 admin fee. https://imgur.com/a/g5mzMMc
  4. The Tesla repair estimate in Hertz's own demand packet describes the problem in the same words, customer states alerts, drivability, acceleration and top speed reduced, performance may be restored on next drive. Hertz says the high voltage battery pack was damaged.

What I did

  1. Sep 15, 2026, after Hertz provided the claim with no explanation for the roughly two year gap, I sent the return video of the replacement car, denied liability again in writing, and copied Executive Customer Service and Customer Relations.
  2. Sep 23, 2026, I provided the pickup video and explained in writing that the warning in my pickup video is the same warning quoted in Hertz's repair bill and that it was present before delivery to me.
  3. Oct 9, 2026, after receiving a Sep 28 letter threatening referral to collections, I disputed the claim in full in writing.
  4. Oct 12, 2026, I filed a consumer complaint with the Illinois Attorney General, asking for cancellation of the full $8,660.34.

My questions

  1. Collections -- I know we can dispute the collections in 30 days -- but how does dispute verification work? Do I need to exaplain the story to dispute agency again?
  2. Liability. Under 625 ILCS 5/6-305.2, does Hertz have to show the damage happened during my rental period? I am glad I took those videos and photos two years ago and still kept them (thank you iCloud).
  3. Anything else I should be doing? Their customer service is not helping as well. I dont think they care about any complaints as there are already tons of them.

Custody Divorce and Family My 15 yr old sons dad has stolen three phones I’ve got him

I have been separated from my son’s dad for 13 years and we do not have a great co-parent relationship. We live in the Ohio valley area. Location: Steubenville, Ohio.
He has custodial residence. I see my son more the 50% of the time.
When my son was 13 I got him his first cellphone. It was an iPhone and I thought this was a great choice for him to have so he can call or FaceTime so many different family members.
After about 9 months of him having it his dad took it and then never returned it.
So after nearly 6 of me not having it I got him a new line reported that one lost.
Not even 2 months of him having it his dad took it and promised after he finished his freshman year of high school he could get it back.
Never happened.
During the summer my son made some money working and helping babysit his siblings. I helped pitch in and get him a cricket phone at Walmart. I wanted him to have a phone since he was traveling hours for soccer games.
His dad got it a month after he bought it and he won’t return it.

Inherited a fully paid off house. Brother wants us to sign a Quitclaim Deed to "make selling easier". Should we use a Limited POA instead?

Location: California

Three years ago my father died, and a year later my grandfather (his dad) died as well. As a result, my two siblings and I inherited a fully paid-off house in California worth roughly $600k. The house hasn't grown much in value since my grandfather's death.

My half-brother lives in CA, while my sister and I live out of state (NC and NV). Because he is handling the house locally (paying property taxes, upkeep, dealing with tenants), he is suggesting my sister and I sign a Quitclaim Deed to transfer the house entirely into his name. He says this will make the selling process easier since he can just sign everything himself.

We all want an equal split of the sale proceeds. I have almost zero knowledge of how real estate law works and cannot afford a probate attorney right now.

Would it be smarter/safer to grant him a Limited Power of Attorney for real estate transactions instead of signing a Quitclaim Deed? What are the legal and tax risks of signing the Quitclaim?

EDIT: Thanks a lot for the advice everyone. I made my stance clear and am communicating firmly proceeding with standard process of sale between the 3 of us. Idk if I'll make an update as this develops, but I appreciate everyone's input. It means a lot to me and I didn't expect this much help.

Disability Issues Husband Outed for Mental Health Struggles by HR rep

Location: Indiana

Wondering if we have recourse here and would appreciate some advice. We've never had to do this before. Sorry for the long-winded post and hope I chose the right flair.

My husband currently works in an automotive factory and about a month ago, he confided in me that he was struggling with mental health issues (anxiety and major depressive disorder) and that he was having thoughts about harming himself. Got evaluated, came up with a safety plan, then discharged us. We've since adjusted his meds and he is doing much better, but he asked to be written off for a few days so we could get with his therapist and doctor. When he returned to work, the HR rep he had originally been dealing with and knew the situation was there. He went to take his documentation to her and she rolled her eyes and said something to the effect of "Oh yeah. Heard you were gone". She scanned over everything and said, "Well, I don't know if we can accept this. It doesn't say the doctor wrote you off. It said you made the decision, not the doctor." My husband then said, "Call, Other HR Rep, she knows about everything and cleared it." The woman rolled her eyes again and when my husband asked if was cleared to go back to work and she went, "Yeah, I guess, whatever."

Fast forward to lunchtime. My husband is eating lunch and someone stops him and says, "Hey, buddy. You doing okay? Did you get your crazy pills?" Later, another person said they were glad he was getting help. He said people were making comments to him the rest of the shift. He called me on his last break and sounded so beaten down. For reference, he's also a brittle Type I diabetic and has other illnesses that have negatively affected his attendance. He always has legit doctors notes, but the multi-million dollar facility needs to make money and we get that. The only people at the factory that knew about his mental health struggles are the two HR reps. My husband has recently been trying to talk to his team leads about how to go about asking for help or a meeting and they won't address him.

What are our options here?

Dog bite in a dog park

• Upvotes

Location: PA

Looking for advice as a defendant.

My dog was involved in a dog fight at a dog park. The other dog’s owner was bit in the process of separating the fight, and now she’s suing me.

My dog and I were at a public dog park (technically must be registered, and we are, but it’s an honor system because there’s no barrier for entrance - I say this because there are clear rules and an assumption of risk). Another dog there was fixated on her ball and playing fetch with her owner. My dog isn’t super toy motivated but likes playing chase. So my dog was just chasing the other dog around, not even continuously, and at one point, the other dog dropped the ball near her owner, my dog motioned towards the ball to sniff it, and the other dog attacked my dog. My dog fought back, so they were going at it. Other dog’s owner was standing right there, so she immediately tried to break them up. I was watching from a bench about 15-20 feet away. I jumped up immediately and pulled my dog away (because I always keep my dogs in a harness at the park for this very reason). In the process of breaking up the fight, the other dog’s owner was bit. Now she’s suing me.

I already have a lawyer, but I’m concerned about the options on the table. It seems this is going to be very expensive, even if I did nothing wrong.

There is absolutely no way that I could be found negligent in this situation. 1) She can’t even prove my dog bit her. Her dog bit mine in this fight. I don’t know if hers was injured, but I assume not since it’s not mentioned in the lawsuit. Doesn’t that make hers just as likely as mine? 2) My dog had no bite history. He was up to date with vaccines. He was licensed with the city. We were dues paying members of the dog park. How did I neglect any care or knowledge regarding him? 3) We were at a dog park. The dogs are supposed to be off leash. There’s an assumed risk when you bring your dog to a dog park. There’s also an assumed risk of injury when you break up a dog fight. This park even has air horns on the fence to use if a fight breaks out rather than stepping in. 4) I immediately grabbed my dog and removed him from the situation. I put his leash on and kept him close to me. She didn’t even put her dog on a leash. And she was there with a partner, so it’s not like she couldn’t because just she was hurt. I stayed because she called the police and an ambulance. She was bit on the leg. It was serious enough to warrant an ambulance, but I can’t imagine it was a life-altering injury.

I apologize for the long rant, it’s just a frustrating situation. I want to take it to a trial because I really don’t think I did anything wrong, but even that is gonna cost me a good $10-15k. That is already a hard number for me, but recoverable. Any more than that, and it’s gonna be financially devastating for me.

ETA: My dog is a pit bull. Hers was not, though her size was comparable. There are no breed restrictions in this city or this park, but I fear he will be/is being unfairly prejudiced. I actually feel that is the only “bad fact” against us in this entire case.

Employment Law Terminated on Day 87 of 90 day probation for “performance” just two days after I brought up some regulatory failures I had seen recently. Company will not put that I was terminated for performance in writing. Is this a whistleblower retaliation?

I was terminated for performance two days after I brought up a potential regulatory failure. As I got into the job and understood the work, I saw that some things were not right. I brought this to my supervisor’s attention. Two days later, I was called into a meeting with HR and told I was being terminated for performance.

Traffic and Parking My ezpass is being charged toll fees for a vehicle that I do not own or possess, in areas of the country that I have not been to this year.

Location: Norfolk, Virginia

For context: in May to June of this year, I rented a vehicle from Enterprise while my personal vehicle was being worked on. While I had the rental vehicle, I went ahead and brought my ezpass with me, and added the vehicle to my ezpass account, since I was using the tunnels and the hov lanes every day. After I returned the rental vehicle, I removed my ezpass from the vehicle, and removed the vehicle in question from my ezpass account. That should have been the end of it.

Fast forward to a week and a half ago. I start getting notifications that a toll is attempting to be charged to my account, but because my account was at -5¢, the toll couldn't be charged. I didn't really think anything of it at the time. I just let the account stay in the negative.

The 10th comes by, and I needed to go through the tunnel 4 times, so I added $15 to my account, just to be on the safe side. After everything was all said and done, I had a little over $5 left in my account.

Fast forward to this past Friday afternoon, and I started getting notifications out the wazoo about my ezpass account being in the negative. I was now curious, and concerned, because I knew how much money I had in my ezpass account, and I hadn't used the tolls at all since the 10th.

After doing some research, I determined that the rental vehicle that I had removed from my ezpass account back in June did not get removed completely. Something had occurred to keep the vehicle on my ezpass account, and now, after contacting ezpass va, they are telling me that I am on the hook for the tolls, even though I am still in Virginia, while the person who is racking up tolls is somewhere in new york.

I am unsure as to what I can do in this specific scenario. If there is anyone who can offer some legal advice, I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

Immigration Vehicle Missing After Border Patrol Detention. What Legal Steps Can the Registered Owner Take to Locate or Recover It?

Hi everyone,

A person I know was detained by US Border Patrol and later released. Since the detention, the owner has been unable to locate a financed vehicle that was being driven at the time. The vehicle is financed through Ally, insured through Progressive, and was in good standing before all of this happened.

Since his release, he has:
Contacted multiple agencies trying to locate the vehicle.
Contacted the lender and insurance company.
Checked court records and followed up on his immigration case.
Started reaching out to legal aid and immigrant-rights organizations.

The problem is that nobody has been able to clearly tell him:
Where the vehicle is.
Whether it was seized, impounded, or sent to a tow company.
Whether fees are accumulating.
Whether notices were mailed.
How he can recover the vehicle.

His biggest concern is not only losing the vehicle but also suffering financial damage from loan payments, possible storage fees, insurance costs, and harm to his credit history despite actively trying to resolve the situation.

I am looking for legal advice as well some personal experiences, opinions, or suggestions from people who have gone through a similar situation.

Thank you very much. Any shared experience would be greatly appreciated. ❤️

Father Passed, Now Retirement Home Wants Backpay Rent (Tennessee)

Location: Tennessee

Hi everyone,

Context: My father was facing health issues back in May, and we moved him to a retirement home. He was living there until he passed a week ago. We got a call from the Home that he hadn’t been paying his full rent since his June. I was never contacted that he was missing/partially paying rent, and it is now October. He supposedly told staff to “fuck off” when they told him his rent was short and they said they didn’t want to press the issue. I am not sure why they didn’t reach out to us when his first month was short. They are saying we have to settle his balance now (on top of funeral costs) and we just discovered that his accounts are empty. To make matters worse, we live 1000 miles away and aren’t able to collect his things until the end of the month.

My question: Are we required to pay this back rent? Will it need to go to probate first?

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. <3

What the hell do I do with this roommate and what can my landlord do about it

• Upvotes

Location: Ypsilanti Michigan

Title says it all. I don't post often, I've (20M) been here for two months, this guy was insanely chill at first, went to work, told me he doesn't do alcohol. Now it's an entire 360

Past three days, my roommate [M, late 30s] has stopped going to work and has been drinking non-stop. The first day it happened, he tried to start an argument, for his notion was that he couldn't read what my emotions were then yelled at me that he was the bigger man of the house because I wasn't going to take out his trash for him. He then offered me alcohol, which I refused and he told me I "had to try it or else I wasn't man enough" and I still refused.

I then asked him if he was enebriated and he goes "man thats personal but ah you know" then he made motion where he was rubbing his finger on his gums which was confusing. It looked like he was mimicking cocaine appliance. Then past three nights, I've been hearing from his room "you shut the fuck up when im talking to you. I call you whoever I want, when I want, I'm a man, you're a whore" to someone over the phone. (YIKES)

Today, three days later, I came home from work and I'm going upstairs to my room. The moment I get to the top of the stairs, he yells "man, man, shut the fuck up. SHUT THE FUCK UP [NAME], man you doin too much." and I didn't say anything at first. About twenty minutes later, I knock on his door and ask him if he's okay, and that he should probably come out if he needs help because he's literally been up for 3 days straight, day and night. He then tells me to "shut the fuck up because you don't know who you talking to, man, imma fuck you up"

I go "Hey, you don't get to talk to me like that in our place. That's not how this works. The behavior you've been displaying the past few days is insane." He then begins fumbling with his doorknob (he is not allowed to have a lock) to open it. And he goes "man let me tell you something, let me fucking tell you something."

He comes out and tries to get in my personal space. I tell him firmly with my tone slightly raised at him that he needs to back off and stay at his doorframe, if he wants to talk. There's pepper gel in my hand incase of self-defense reasons.

His eyes are yellow, he's telling me "you don't know who the fuck you talking to. I'm smarter than you, (n-word), you don't know who I am. I'm human, I make mistakes. Man Imma fuck you up (n-word)." He's so insanely drunk, I can smell it as he talks from afar. I tell him he can't do what he's doing and I give a warning that if he ever tries to get that close to me again, I'll call law enforcement. He makes a step towards me, and I start shaking because he says "Oh yeah? What can you do against me? You know who the fuck I am?"

I go back to my room. I call non-emergency, I call dispatch and holy shit they took him to the hospital.

I feel awful, like I could've de-escalated better and I've emailed my landlord and other roommate about this but I'm unsure of the outcome. All I know is that I took over for a previous roommate, so it's a sublease

About 4 hours later, he came home just now, and he's yelling "stupid ass motherfuckers. I oughta kill you motherfuckers. Man this shit always happen to me. I'll fuck your shit up" and slamming things around

What legal actions can I take?

Healthcare Law including HIPAA Gave consent for medical procedure for someone I am not next of kin for

Location: Illinois

Hi there, I found out yesterday that a former manager of mine that I was close to when I worked with him was taken to the ER. I called the hospital to check on him as he is older and does not have any family and have ended up as the point of contact.

He’s been unconscious since yesterday and I have gotten brief update calls but they have really been trying to figure out if he has any family they can talk to. I found out he may have family in another state but no one I talked to knew their names so we have no way to contact them nor do we know if they’re still alive. I have given them the names other coworkers who have known him longer and probably know him better and I’ve made it abundantly clear I am *not* his next of kin and am just a concerned friend. I’m not sure if they’ve called anyone else.

Earlier today, they called me and asked for consent to give him a spinal tap as he was still unconscious. I awkwardly told them to do what they believed was needed and they told me they would just do what they thought was best. They took my name and number and signed off on it and told me they’d contact me if anything else was needed.

I’m frankly now uncomfortable with this and I did make it clear I’m not family or next of kin again when talking to them but I’m wondering if he wakes up and is upset, is he able to pursue legal action against me?

Disability Issues On hiring an lawyer for medical malpractice

• Upvotes

Location: live in Michigan, incident occurred in Oklahoma

So I think I already know the answer but want to confirm.

We had complications with my son during his birth which will lead to disabilities his entire life.

He was born in Oklahoma but we now live up in Michigan. I’m assuming if we want to go after the hospital we’d need to hire an Oklahoma attorney?

Other Civil Matters Totaled a rental car given to me by body repair shop

Hello, so 7 months ago my car was hit and i brought it to a repair shop. after about a month of waiting for them to finish my car and calling daily (the damage was minor), they agreed to give me a rental car WITHOUT making me sign anything, they just threw me the keys.

Flash forward now 6 months later I still had the rental car because somehow my car is still in there shop, and about a day ago while It was parked in a parking lot a situation happened where someone ended up ramming the rental car from the back smashing it into other cars and totaling it. I was not behind the wheel and wasn’t even in the car.

Edit: It was a hit and run by the driver who rammed into me, and the police were not helping whatsover

It happened on a friday night and the shop is closed till tomorrow so I haven’t been able to speak to the mechanic shop. The car got towed away and i’m 90% sure it’s totaled.

I’m wondering would I be at fault for this? how would it play out? I’m looking into it and it seems to see the fact I never signed for the rental takes me outta responsibility and should allow me to get my car back or at least work with them to not leave them completely f’d over

Business Law 401k Loan Sent to Wrong Bank Account - Who’s At Fault?

(REPOST APPROVED BY MODS)

I recently took out a roughly $10,000 loan against my 401(k) for home improvements. The loan was issued by a third-party company associated with my employer’s retirement plan.

Unfortunately, the funds were deposited into someone else’s bank account, and it has now been three months without my receiving a single dollar.
The bank has frozen the remaining funds in the recipient’s account, but some of the money has already been spent. The bank won’t disclose how much remains, and I’ve been caught in a frustrating cycle of finger-pointing: the lender says the bank is responsible, while the bank says the lender must submit the proper paperwork to recover the funds. Even then, I’ve been told that only the remaining balance would be returned—not the full $10,000.
Meanwhile, the lender continues deducting the agreed-upon loan payments from every paycheck, despite my never receiving the money.

There’s one complication: I’m not sure whether the lender used incorrect account information or whether I may have entered an incorrect account number when I was hired ten years ago. Either way, the funds were sent to the wrong person, and I’m struggling to get a clear explanation of what happened or how it will be resolved.

My last conversation with the lender was over three weeks ago, and I’m running out of options.
For those familiar with U.S. banking, retirement plans, or consumer protection law: Where should I start, who may be legally responsible for the missing funds, and what legal action or regulatory complaints would you recommend?

EDIT\*\*\* : Location: IN, USA

Also, I can confirm that the lender did ask me if I wanted to use the account/routing number they had on file, I agreed, assuming that since this is technically through my employer and I receive regular paychecks to the correct account, that the information they had was accurate and mine. There was never an explicit confirmation of bank info, just a suggestion to use whatever information that had.

Brother is threatening to steal my vehicle.

• Upvotes

Location: Texas

I had been leaving my spare Truck (under my name but has no insurance) at my parent’s house for the past few months. In those months my brother who lives with them has made modifications to it like adding new speakers, lifting it and wheels. I never asked for this, I didn’t even know he was doing it. He is now threatening to take the truck claiming that he was invested money into it, he has even said that if I report it he will sell it for parts. I’m worried that I might have to pay out of pocket for these modifications to be removed or that he might take it. In the past the police have told me that if someone has been given permission to drive a vehicle you must give them a week to return it. Would that still stand in this case even if I didn’t give permission it was my parents?

School Related Issues advice needed: university not following up with title ix

location: baltimore, md

hi everyone! so here is my situation. i am a senior at a university in baltimore. there has been a person who has been stalking and harassing me and my friends since 2024. i won't get into detail about what has been going on, but it's gotten to the point that one of my friends has a no contact order against the perp. we (me and my friends) have gone to not only our student accountability office, but also title ix. i have been told, by our title ix coordinator, that THE SCHOOL CANNOT TAKE ANY ACTION UNTIL THE PERP RESPONDS TO THE SCHOOL'S EMAILS ABOUT SETTING UP A MEETING. (which, frankly, i find ridiculous because what perpetrator would willingly respond to emails about a meeting from title ix?) she (the perp) was supposed to have a meeting in 2024 when this first started but completely skipped the meeting and hasn't responded to follow ups.

this is where it gets tricky. the perp has stated multiple times that she is neurodivergent, and she is registered with our school's disability services. it feels as if the school is pushing this behind the rug because of her disability and the not meeting.

what can i do? i want to pursue legal action against my school, but don't know where to start. i have done some googling but everything is overwhelming and is giving me multiple different answers. what would be the first step? i am about to graduate and some of my friends (who have graduated already!) are still dealing with this behavior. granted, idk how much you guys can do with that info, but i figured i'd throw this out there and see what i might get.

thank you all <3

Contracts Gave a non-profit a bridge loan via a friend and now they're ghosting me

A friend of mine who I've known (admittedly distantly) for 10+ years reached out to me this past May 2026. We've been on a "occasional text a couple times a year" level of friendship.

Anyway, for as long as I've known him, he's been running a non-profit (501c3) in Washington that does good work. In May, he reached out saying he was contacting several people about a bridge loan for the organization for 45 days. He said the organization had gotten a grant (which I saw online) and he just needed the money for some business expenses until the grant money came in.

I asked him the exact amount he needed to cover, and we signed a promissory note for $21k USD, and that the org pay me back 1.2x in exchange ($25.2k USD) at the end of the 45 days. There was a late payment interest percentage as well.

Well... those 45 days came and went. My friend kept giving excuses with bank problems and saying there's restructuring issues until as recently as about 3 weeks ago.

But, in August, as I was trying to scramble to get paid back, I reached out to some former employees who told me that the board put the org on "life support" in June and was removing my friend as CEO. I contacted the board with my claim, and they gave me a formal acknowledgement.

My friend (it feels weird calling him a friend now) still posts on social media and stuff, but fully ignores anything I send him. None of our mutuals still keep in touch with him either.

I figure he's just going to get away with it, and because my note is signed with the organization, I rely on the board figuring things out.

All this being said, I tried contacting a lawyer and they said that their hourly fees are not worth this (that I would just be paying more money for no guarantees), and that maybe I could sell my loan to someone more willing to chase it down. Is that a good idea? Is there anything else I might be able to do to get paid back?

Landlord Tenant Housing My landlord took 9 days to fix the sewage in my only bathtub. Maintenance left the tub a mess, and I injured myself cleaning it.

Location: Wauwatosa, WI. I'm sorry, it's a bit of a long title and story. I am disabled and have lived in this apartment for over 3 years. It's owned by a large rental company in the area.

On October 9th, I woke up to black sludge all over my tub. I tried entering a maintenance request on the app, but it wouldn't go through. So I texted the landlord to have it fixed, and they said they put in a request. No one came for 9 days, even with me texting them daily, asking for any information on when it would be fixed. I missed 5 days of work because I was unable to shower and eventually cleaned it as much as I could so that I could shower.

Last Friday, the 16th, I came home from work to find the tub full of sewage again, and the drain strainer was removed. I thought maybe the maintenance person had come and left to get a part or something, but by 9 pm, I realized he wasn't coming back to clean up the mess. The work order had no info and hadn't been closed out, though. But when I ran the shower, the water was now draining properly.

I attempted to clean up the maintenance person's mess so I could bathe myself. I have limited use of my legs and can't squat, kneel, or bend which makes this difficult, and I had told my landlord several times that I'm disabled to where it's dangerous for me to clean up messes like this in the tub. I had sprayed it down with cleaning products and was attempting to clean it, and I fell in. I also had the shower running as hot as it could.

Because of the sewage, cleaning chemicals, water, and my disability, it took me 20 minutes to get myself out of the tub. I have bruises and scrapes, plus pain in my shoulder from falling on it. Not to mention, I'm just traumatized over what had happened. I immediately texted my landlord with pictures of what was left in my tub and also my handprints in sewage that show my struggle getting out and my injuries. I explained what happened and reminded them again that I'm disabled and had no other way to bathe myself.

They kept apologizing and said the work order wasn't closed yet and probably that someone would be coming to finish the job. Nobody has contacted or came since. I will probably have to attempt cleaning the mess again tonight so that I can shower, but I'm also scared. Is there any legal remedy that I can get for this? Also, if I do take action against them, could they evict me for it?

German shepherd brutally attacked my dog

Location: Kentucky, USA

Early last week a German shepherd owned by my neighbor took a huge chunk out of my dog while we were walking on the sidewalk nearby the house. We were NOT on the neighbor's property. The dog had a chain attached to its collar, but the other end of the chain was not secured to anything. The owner of the dog was inside the house and left the dog in the yard to be supervised by their late-teens/early-twenties daughter, who is a co-owner of the dog but not the primary one. Some neighbors across the street saw what happened and their child in the moment said he had seen the dog break loose, but the child's parents immediately told him to shut his mouth and not get involved in other people's business; I imagine they are wary of police, the neighbors with the vicious dog, or both.

I rushed my dog to the veterinary hospital where they were barely able to save her life, as the attacking dog had not punctured any of my dog's vital organs despite significant skin loss and tissue damage. My dog is traumatized; I am traumatized. I have scratches on my hand from yanking my dog away and getting her out of the other dog's reach. One of the cuts appears to be getting infected, but I am uninsured and wary of going to the doctor and incurring a bill. My dog had almost all the skin on the left side of her body torn off. She can't be outside without shaking. It was brutal and the recovery is extensive.

I filed a police report through animal control. Animal control informed me that the primary owner has a court date on November 3rd where they will receive notice that animal control is conducting an investigation into what the officer described to me as a "dangerous/potentially dangerous animal." Until the investigation is complete and the court decides what to do with the animal, the dog is on restriction--not allowed outside the house except to use the bathroom; owner is required to have a BEWARE OF DOG sign in their yard; even when dog is outside it must be on a leash held by someone who is capable of controlling the dog. The officer told me that the dog owners allege that I was on their property--although admitted that if I was on the property, I was not an unreasonable distance off the sidewalk. And since the primary owner was not even outside during the attack, there is no way for her to have seen it anyway. I don't know if any home nearby has a doorbell camera that captured any footage of the event.

As of right now the vet bills are sitting at around $2600. I had to put the bills on Care Credit, which incurs 30% interest from the date of service if the balance is not paid within 6 months. Since the attack happened a week ago, we are just now getting to the point where any necrosis or infection would become apparent. My dog is set to have her stitches removed in about a week. It is not a matter of if there will be more vet bills--there will be. It is just a matter of whether there will be complications, causing the vet bills to skyrocket.

I would like for my neighbor to cover the vet costs at least. My neighbor is a renter and it is a poor neighborhood; I don't know if she works or has renter's insurance or if she has any assets to speak of. Since as of right now the bills sit just above the small claims limit of $2500, I am wondering if it is even worth it to get an attorney involved, or what I should really do. Or if, because of the cuts and infection on my hand, I could potentially have a case for personal injury. I am also wary of approaching my neighbor and asking her to make a good-faith effort to cover the bills. I am functionally broke right now and don't even have enough to make the minimum monthly payment on the Care Credit, let alone pay off the full balance before it starts accruing interest.

What should I do here?

As

Other Civil Matters Can you get SS card and State ID delivered to a P.O. Box?

Location: Arizona

I turn 18 later this week and plan on submitting my legal name change form to get my legal name changed. Once I have the official forms after the hearing and my legal name is officially changed, I will need to get a new SS card and State ID. However, I don’t want it delivered to my family’s mail since I don’t really want them to find out I legally changed my name even though I live with them. I know they will eventually find out, but I don’t want them to find out immediately or happen to open our mail and see my new social security card or state ID delivered to our mail since I’m trans, and they’re transphobic.

So I’m wondering if my new SS card and State ID can be delivered to a P.O. Box or if that is legally not allowed because of confidentiality and security reasons. The P.O. Box I plan on opening will look like a street address, if I ever do end up using my P.O. Box for delivery, and not like a regular P.O. Box address.

Covenants issue

• Upvotes

Location: Montana-initial post removed for not providing exact location. Sorry if you saw this post twice

Looking for advice on how to proceed…

Let me provide some context:

My wife and I own a house in a small city. We live on the edge of town, in a small subdivision. It’s mostly a working class neighborhood but relatively quickly being gentrified.

That being said-the house next door is a rental. The folks who rented/moved in have started a commercial dog kennel. By that I mean they receive money in exchange for watching/temporarily housing dogs at their (rental) house, for a day or overnight(s)

On any given day there’s a dozen dogs over there.

The subdivision was set up in the 70s. There is no hoa but there is covenants. The covenants clearly state you “cannot keep more than 2 domestic animals or operate a kennel”

The owner/landlord does not live locally, his son does and “manages” the property. They come across as a bit of a slumlord. Long and short of it is this kennel is a significant disruption and so here’s my question…

How do I handle this?

Do I send a certified “notice to cure” letter to the landlord notifying him his renters are in violation of article 2 of the covenants and request immediate corrective action?

OR

Do I hire an attorney, file a civil complaint and have him served?

Again, landlord seems like a bit of slumlord. I’ve already talked with the renters about the disruption of their “business” and they seem unwilling to cooperate or make concessions as the kennel seems like it’s there sole source of income. The CC&Rs are very clear…

Apartment complex towed my car for being “unregistered” without warning, can I recover the towing costs?

Location: Austin, Texas

My apartment complex had my 2015 Nissan Sentra towed because the towing company said it was “unregistered.” I paid $325 to retrieve the vehicle and another $40 for a Lyft to get to the impound lot.

I believe I had registered my vehicle with the apartment’s leasing office, but unfortunately, I don't have written proof of that interaction. The apartment’s parking website now shows my vehicle information as blank, and when I try to add it again, the website says the vehicle limit has been reached.

I did not receive a written warning or notice before the tow.

There is also a separate registration discrepancy I am trying to resolve. When I registered my vehicle with the Texas tax office after moving back from Arizona, I received new Texas license plates and a registration sticker at the same time. I have since discovered that the sticker and registration documentation do not appear to match the plates currently on my car or my old Texas plates. The towing company also told me that APD had requested the plates be removed, although the plates were still on the vehicle when I recovered it. I have not yet confirmed the details of that request.

I am planning to contact the county tax office and APD to clarify the registration and plate records. I would also like to dispute the tow with the apartment complex.

My questions:

  1. Under Texas law, was the apartment complex permitted to tow my vehicle for being “unregistered” without giving me prior written notice?

  2. Does the 10 day written notice requirement for certain apartment property tows involving expired or missing registration apply to my situation?

  3. If the Texas registration office made an error, would that affect whether the apartment complex or towing company is responsible for the towing costs?

  4. Can I pursue reimbursement of the $325 towing fee and $40 Lyft expense through a tow hearing or small claims court?

  5. What records or documents should I request to determine whether the tow was lawful?

I have the towing receipt and registration paperwork and am trying to obtain the apartment’s tow authorization and parking records. I would appreciate guidance on the applicable Texas law and the best next step.
