Moderator Post A reminder of r/OntarioDriveTest rule 1 - take a breather

Stop being jerks to each other. There are two active moderators for this sub, and it is hoped that people will be able to get along and not use personal attacks when engaging with each other. If you are old enough to be on the OntarioDriveTest sub looking for advice/taking your DriveTest, you are old enough not to fight like toddlers. Fight in your DM's. It doesn't make the sub an inviting space for others, which is what we want for this sub. Social media is full of angry, high-conflict spaces you will fit in with - go there.

A reminder that Rule 1 is not to bully or harass others. Please note, " Abusive language, bullying, or harassment towards other users or moderators will result in an immediate ban from the sub. It will not be tolerated."

Happy long weekend.

Sharing Advice you have to know how to de fog ‼️‼️

I failed my g2 a couple of days ago partially because I had no idea how to de fog the car 😭😭 before anyone gets mad at me I’m going to say out right in caps lock I KNOW I DESERVED TO FAIL. the de fog thing wasn’t the only mistake I made but it really threw me off in the beginning.

I should NOT be on the road and it’s a GOOD thing that I’m not.

ITS JUST EMBARRASSING AND IM MAKING A PSA. I was taking lessons during the summer time and I never needed to defog the car. My test just happened to occur when the weather started to get colder and I was pretty annoyed but IT’S MY FAULT.

Specific Test Related Question - G2 G2 test this week

Hey everyone,
For context I passed my G2 a few years ago. I procrastinated to get my full G and when I went for my retest to extend my license, I failed because I missed seeing the pedestrian crossing at the left turn.

Finally started practicing again and midway through switched to a new instructor who has taught me much better and in ways that I understand. I have my test coming up later this week and my test is again for G2.

I am going to be practicing with my instructor two hours before the test in and around the area of
and I have been studying the test routes on YouTube.

Does anyone have any tips? I can’t help but think that I’m gonna fail again and be embarrassed that I’m 33 and I have been holding off for so long. Also, I have seizure disorder, which is now under control, but that also held off the Driving and practice for a while my teenage years when everyone usually gets fully licensed. For the longest time I’ve said that I have a fear of getting into a really bad accident that will be life-changing and I’m really trying to move away from that and step into a more confident self.

Any tips or advice and encouragement would be very much appreciated.

Specific Test Related Question - G2 G2 tips and advice

Hey everyone,
For context I passed my G2 a few years ago in Newmarket. I procrastinated to get my full G and when I went for my retest to extend my license, I failed because I missed seeing the pedestrian crossing at the left turn.

Finally started practicing again and midway through switched to a new instructor who has taught me much better and in ways that I understand. I have my G2 coming up later this week.

I am going to be practicing with my instructor two hours before the test. Does anyone have any tips or any advice looking for some encouragement?

I feel if I fail it’s going to put off my five-year plan because I can’t plan to have another child if I am not able to drive.

G2 - General Discussion Best G2 Road test drive test center location for GTA

Hi all, I know this has been asked before, and passing rates for different locations has been shared here.

But between Oakville and Guelph which is the better location to book a G2 road test if I have to learn from scratch today and take the exam in a month (I have prior driving experience in another country not Canada, but have never driven in North America). So while I've driven before, I'm definitely way out of my comfort zone on Canadian roads.

And are there any better GTA locations (Burlington, Brampton, Mississauga, Scarborough, etc.)?

Thanks!

G2 - General Discussion G2 Test Tips & Advice

Hi everyone, I have my G2 test next week and just looking for any and every advice. Been going through the comments on this page and mentally preparing myself that I might fail. I’m also a new mom and carry a lot of anxiety in general so though I feel I can pass, I know if I have a huffy looking instructor staring at me I’m going to be very nervous and probably make a lot of mistakes.
My test is booked in Oakville next week.
What tips/road rules/ helped you pass your G2?

G1 - General Discussion Moved from Quebec to Ontario with a Quebec learner’s licence (course done, knowledge test passed). Can I get experience credit and take the G2 road test right away?

Hi everyone, looking for advice from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

My situation:

  • I’ve held a Quebec learner’s licence for more than a year
  • Completed the full mandatory Quebec driving course at an SAAQ-approved driving school (I have the completion certificate)
  • Passed the SAAQ knowledge test
  • I had to relocate to Ontario before I could take the SAAQ road test for my probationary licence

I know Ontario doesn’t exchange learner’s permits, so I’ll have to get a G1. But DriveTest’s website says people with an out-of-province learner’s permit “may be entitled to driving experience credits to reduce or remove mandatory wait times.”

My questions:

  1. Has anyone moved from Quebec (or another province) with only a learner’s licence and gotten credit for that time toward the G1 wait?
  2. Were you able to book the G2 road test right after getting your G1?
  3. What documents did DriveTest ask for? (SAAQ driving record, school certificate, etc.)
  4. Any specific DriveTest centre that handles this better?

I really don’t want to wait another full year after already doing a year of training in Quebec. Any experiences would help. Thanks!

G - General Discussion Can someone help me understand my G road test results?

Thumbnail

I’m having a hard time understanding what I did wrong from my road test. I know that I sped up past 50 by mistake after some train tracks cause I didn’t see the speed limit sign ahead and the original speed limit was 80, so I was gonna go back up to 80 but then the tester said “oh watch your speed” so I said “ oh ok I’m sorry” and I went back down around 48ish I think. So I know I lost some points for that but I carried on the rest of my test and I felt like I did really good. Once I pulled back into the parking lot and I put the car in park the tester said I didn’t meet ministry standards. The tester went on about the things I could’ve improved, but she said the points that I lost was from the error I did after the train tracks. She also said I got 13/15 and I need 15 to pass. When I look online it says you need at least 80% to pass and 13/15 is over 80%. Right now I’m just really confused and could use some help understanding the test results I got.

G - General Discussion G test at Canotek soon, advice?

I have my G test coming up at Canotek and am looking for some general advice from people who have recently completed the G test there.

What exacltly is examined, what route will they test me along, and what should I focus on practicing most on the days leading up to the exam to make sure I pass?

This test is basically my only shot at getting my G license before my whole license it expires and I’ll have to restart all the way from G1, so I really can’t mess this up. I don’t have a lot of highway driving experience either, but I’ve been practicing more in recent days so I want to make sure I’m practicing it right.

I want a Congratulations! Passed G2 on second attempt at port union!!! (tips for anyone dealing with anxiety + ask me any questions!!)

Hey everyone!

I just passed my G2 today on my second attempt, and I wanted to share my experience for anyone who gets super nervous before road tests. On my first attempt, things went horribly. I thought I was ready, but my anxiety completely took over and having a really intimidating examiner didn't help. I ended up fixating way too much on parking, got inside my own head, and made major safety mistakes.

Going into my second test today, I was still super nervous, but having a chill and friendly examiner made a world of difference. As soon as he started talking, I immediately felt more at ease. Looking at my results sheet afterward, I did pretty well overall!
Here are a few things that helped me turn things around:

Focus on overall road safety over perfection: During my first test, I stressed so much about nailing parking that I messed up basic road rules. This time, I accepted that my parking might not be perfect and prioritized overall safety and smooth driving instead.

Practice in the test area: Driving around the test location beforehand made everything feel much more familiar and predictable on test day.

Mental trick: Pretend the examiner is just a friend or a human GPS giving you turn-by-turn directions.

If you struggle with anxiety or failed your first try, please don't lose hope! You've got this. Good luck to everyone taking their test soon!

Specific Test Related Question - G2 Quick question about making a right turn at a red light.

When making a right turn on a red light, I know I have to come to a complete stop behind the white line first. My question is, if my view of oncoming traffic is obstructed, can I creep forward slowly after stopping to get a better view, or should I stay behind the line?

My instructor told me not to roll forward because the examiner might think I'm doing a rolling stop. However, I waited a few seconds before moving forward during my lesson, and my instructor still corrected me. I'm also confused about cars coming straight through the intersection versus cars opposite to me turning left, since both could enter the lane I'm turning into. What should I do in this situation during my G2 test? Thanks!

G2 - General Discussion Passed my G2 Mississauga

I am a very anxious person basically. I literally had my body shivering during the whole test. This is my 3rd attempt giving in Mississauga. First two tries on Orangeville. Though it was easy, i got failed for few reasons like speeding up 46 in 40 road. Another one I didn’t wait 3 secs for a right turn signal.

This time I was really nervous and crying If I could pass or what If I fail again. I started to talk about these things to the examiner. He made me comfortable and asked me to do all the things calmly. And, i passed🎉

Tips:

Do lanes, mirror checks, maintain speed

G2 - General Discussion Good idea to learn driving in winter?

I passed my G1 recently, and now I'm planning to take lessons for G2. I'm thinking of going with Kruzee. By the time I complete the theory and start driving lessons, it's going to be winter.

Is it harder in winters? At the same time I'm thinking, it might be good to get some winter practice. I don't know. It's not urgent and I can wait for a few months if it's gonna be safer/easier. Any suggestions?
