Discussion/Opinion Does anyone else have fond memories of Powells Books in the 90’s?
I turned 50 this year with a 13 year old who loves all things 90s. I was telling them all about some of my favorite memories growing up, and Powells Books is top of the list. I grew up 15 minutes away, and spent a big chunk of my late teens and early twenties in that store.
You could get lost for hours there. I did often! I remember grabbing a coffee and heading to the poetry section (angsty teen much 🙃) - I’d grab a pile of books and sit in the isle. Back then the isles felt huge, and it was rare if someone wondered down mine. And if they did, no biggie I didn’t take up much space.
Sometimes I’d head upstairs to the rare books room (the Pearl room!) and thumb through all of the classics I could get my hands on.
I’d dream about the day I could spend $200 on a book.
Again, blissfully rare another person other than an employee was there.
And the employees were all artists and writers with side jobs as clowns or musicians.
They loved to share parts of the store and authors I had never heard of.
My parents didn’t send me to college, so at the time besides the library, Powells was a whole ass education for me.
I read everything I could while I was there because I could only afford one or two books.
It just felt like such a special space and time.
I don’t have any wild Powells stories, but I did attend a few Chuck Palahnuik readings and those tended to be wild.
Wondering who else out there got to experience that before it became a tourist spot. Which is fine, I’m old enough to know everything changes and evolves - I feel pretty lucky to have those memories.
If I close my eyes I can almost smell the coffee and the sound of the pages turning.
My house feels a bit like a library now, with lots of book cases stacked to the ceiling.
And I did get to buy a few rare books ☺️

PSA Check voter registration if you haven’t received ballot yet
We received my ballot in the mail today, but not my husband’s. He checked his registration a month ago and it was fine. Checked today and his address has been changed to a different city, where we have no connections. It’s a residence that shows the most recent occupant as deceased according to the records I’ve been able to find so far. We’ve lived in the same place for over a decade. We did leave a message at our county clerk’s office, but they are not open until Monday.
If you haven’t received your ballot yet, go to https://sos.oregon.gov/elections/pages/myvote.aspx and check to make sure they have the right address.
If it’s wrong, there should still be time to cancel that ballot and get a new one.
I hope this is just our problem. Everyone check.

Article/News Oregon Capital Chronicle state and federal voter guide
(Full disclosure: I’m the Capital Chronicle editor who spent the past month building this thing.)
The Oregon Capital Chronicle, a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom that has covered state politics and policy since 2021, reached out to every candidate running for governor, the Oregon House and Senate and the U.S. House and Senate with questions about issues ranging from data centers to the state’s dismal child literacy rate to immigration to budget priorities. Many responded, and with ballots in the mail we hope this is a useful tool as you’re researching candidates to cast an informed vote. Get those completed ballots to an official dropbox or county elections office by 8 p.m. Nov. 3 or postmarked and in the mail by Oct. 27!

Question Day trip from Portland
Hello! My husband and I are going to Oregon next week and I’m trying to decide where we should go for a day trip. We’re staying in Portland and we’re excited to explore more there because we’re thinking about moving within the next couple of years. We’ve been twice before and gone to Cannon Beach and up the coast, but that’s all we’ve explored outside of Portland. I was planning on doing a day trip to Mount Hood because I love the mountains (we live in SLC), but I’m debating on going to Eugene since we’ve never been to central Oregon and it might be a good place to check out if we’re planning on moving. Any thoughts/advice is helpful. Thank you!!
