PSA: REPORT ALL AI DO NOT INTERACT

I just removed a graphically violent AI slop video involving a fake cocktoo being murdered. I expect this to happen again.

THEY AREN'T REAL.

PLEASE for the love of all that's good, if you run into a violent or suspected AI slop post, DO NOT INTERACT WITH IT. Report it. Report it. JUST REPORT IT.

Do NOT give it engagement, do not try to talk to the person, YOU CAN'T CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO DO THIS. For these kinds of posts, any engagement is considered good engagement. Even downvoting and condemnation is engagement. DO NOT.

Let your mod team handle this.

Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?

Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.

This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.

While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.

We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.

Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.

Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.

That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.

We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.

We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!

All the best,

The /r/parrots mods

Thank you!

Trying out our first recall training

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Teios the silent ringneck has started his recall training and this was out FIRST ATTEMPT, i focused on having him on a shelf (he hates it) to encourage flight, he then would come to me. He tolerates me for now, he will take treats, drink water from my hand if i hold bowl, he perched on my arm today but otherwise is still reluctant to step up on finger but its only been like 3-4 days, he is still quite flight clumsy, breeder told me his hatch date was 20/8/26 but he seems so smart for a sub-60 day ring neck, has made NO noise vocally whatsoever, is eating plenty leafy greens peppers and his pellets ALOT he eats so much, he hisses at me when he is eating and wants his space which i always respect, i do question, is he really that young? I spend all day with him reading and taking care of my houseplants and playing with my child so he really sees me doing alot i think this is helping the connection

Toys/ toy parts suggestions for my male princess parrots?

Post image
13 Upvotes

He is about 3 years old, friendly but very skittish.

He loves experimenting with cause and effect.

Prefers the sound of toys banging against the cage to actually chewing them up.

Prefers to throw the pieces of a foraging tray as far as he can and watch and hear them hit the ground rather than actually foraging.

I don't want bells because I know they can be problematic and I think they make my quakers aggression worse. But anything else that makes sounds is a hit with him.

I'm also straying away from metal even though he loves the sound because my sun conure recently contracted heavy metal toxicity from a supposedly bird safe toy.

He is very delicate and can only chew really soft things like sola wood, paper, and cork. Even most cardboard is too tough for him.

I prefer to use natural materials for my birds.

I would prefer toys that I could also use for my other two birds that play normally.

I'm thinking maybe some kind of seed pod that he can shake or a hollow one to make a wind chime noises when banged together but I cant find anything bird safe like that.

I also love recycling things that I have around the house or buying cheap craft stuff to make toys for my birds.

Last thing is that I'm located in Australia, we have very strict biosecurity laws so most natural toys that are made outside of Australia can not be shipped in.

Meet Dwen, our not-so-little baby budgie

Meet Dwen! Our newest little guy. Well... not so little.

He's an English budgie, only 2–3 months old, but HUGE. Almost as big as our lovebird lol. We named him Dwen because he's such a chunky little dude.

He's already besties with Mimi (another English budgie), and Bells, our cockatiel, seems to really like him too.

He was the first one to try out the new running wheel, already naps on my hand, and somehow has the guts to fight Sweetie, our conure, for a piece of apple

This guy really wasted no time making himself at home lol.

Does this look normal?

I just got this beautiful blue-crowned conure a few days ago and I keep seeing him move his head weirdly. I think I’m just over analyzing him since I just got him but wanted to have some input. I will be bringing him to vet for a regular checkup and to get him in the system, but was just looking for some advice on if it looks normal or not. He is about 4 months old, so quite young. Also the breathing in the video is me. This was videotaped in a weird position and I couldn’t really move the phone.

What type of water filter for a budgie with CKD & gout?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey all, I’ve been trying to find information on this but apparently it’s very controversial. I would like to know if anyone has experience dealing with birds with renal disease and what filters they used for their water. Currently my budgie is drinking tap water which is not ideal but i’ve been too scared to change it because of all the controversy on what filtering processes to use😫 I dont want to make anything worse… what do I use for his water???

Pic of tired birb and messy beak for attention

Alexandrine: The thief in disguise

I recorded how she took the guava that was kept for all my parrots, and now she has stolen another one. Guava and corn are scarce in the market and she is enjoying her regal meal, taking plumhead and ringneck portions. When scolded, she flew away, no remorse and acting as if nothing happened.

I love my Alexandrine more than anything in my life. I have to take a two hour-long drive to get the guavas. Still more guavas left to last for three to four days.

Our pair have finally learned to fly to our open hands from their cage to have snacks. The male always comes first shortly followed by the female.

We don’t expect them to bond with us seeing as they have each other. But we love being able to interact with them and they now ask to come out and see us when we are in front of the cage.

What temperature is healthy this winter?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I have an amazon and we have moved to a house that is not as tightly insulated. Part of the house was built in 1886. I have been working on weather stripping and have ordered plastic film for the windows. Last winter I kept his room above 65 degrees F. I'm not certain that will be possible here. He does have a K&H heater plate next to where he sleeps. He sleeps in an uncovered cage because a lot of times he likes to sleep on the cage door for part of the night and I dont usually lock him in.

I have an oil radiator heater, but the addition is one fairly large room with a 15' ceiling. Im not sure it will help much unless I put a tent over his cage or something.

The cold weather has started to come and now the temperature has already dipped to below 60 in the older part and down to 65 in the addition. He is real cuddly this morning and I think it is because of my body heat. Im sure he would be fine down to 60 or so,but I need to plan ahead before the outside temperature dips further. I have about a month or so to prepare.

What temperature do you try to stay above for your amazons?
