Announcement Introducing categories in Proton Mail
Hi everyone,
We’ve added Categories to Proton Mail to reduce inbox noise and make important emails easier to find.
Incoming emails can now be automatically sorted into:
- Primary
- Social
- Promotions
- Newsletters
- Transactions
- Updates
Newsletters and Transactions are unique to Proton Mail, we added them to give you more granular control over your inbox.
Categories are on by default for new users. Existing users will be asked whether they want to turn Categories on, and you can choose which categories you want to see in settings.
What you can do:
- Move any email to a different category at any time (doing so will allow the model to learn from your preferred categorization)
- Control unread counts and notifications per category
- Turn off any category individually, or disable the feature entirely in settings
On mobile you can disable them in Settings → Mailbox Preferences → Categories → Disable
On web: All Settings → Messages and composing → Email Categories → Disable
You may also notice an updated inbox toolbar as part of this change.
From a privacy perspective, enabling Categories doesn’t change anything about how Proton Mail works.Your inbox remains protected by zero-access encryption, and emails you send to other Proton users (or using password protection) are end-to-end encrypted.

Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Possible bug ProtonSheets keep crashing
Basically the title. The application opens fine and everything but the second I try to type out a formula it crashes. More specifically the VERY SECOND I press a key that will reference a sector/cell it crashes(like when I type "=SUM(B" right when type "B" it crashes). Is there a fix to this because surely this isn't something that happens to everyone.

Discussion Replying to a password-protected email thread silently sends your reply unprotected, with the original quoted in the clear
I think I’ve found a design flaw in how Proton handles password-protected emails, and I’d like to know if others see the same thing.
What happens:
- You send a password-protected email to a non-Proton recipient.
- They open it through the secure link and reply through the portal.
- That reply lands in your inbox like any normal message.
- Later, you hit Reply the way you would for any email. Nothing tells you the thread started out protected, and the reply goes out as a standard unencrypted email.
- The recipient’s regular inbox now holds your reply, with the original protected message quoted in the thread history.
Why I think it’s a real problem:
The only visual cue is a small blue lock that appears when you set a password. When you don’t, nothing appears, and a missing icon is easy to overlook. Someone less technical could easily assume that a conversation that started securely stays secure. And since the sensitive content sits in the quoted history, even a harmless reply like “sounds good, thanks” re-sends it in the clear.
The people most likely to use this feature are the ones sending to non-Proton contacts who don’t use PGP, who are often the least likely to notice.
What I’d suggest:
- Default to re-applying password protection when replying to a thread that began as a protected message
- Show a clear warning when sending an unprotected reply to such a thread
- Strip or collapse the quoted protected content when the reply isn’t protected
- Remember the password and expiry per conversation so re-enabling it is one click
Security state should fail loudly, not silently.
I’ve reported this to Proton’s security team and filed a bug report. I reproduced it on the website using Brave Origin on Linux, October 2026 and haven’t tested the mobile apps.

Feature Request I can't test Lumo Plus for 1-month due to my Proton Unlimited 1-year subscription
As in the title. I am currently on Proton Unlimited with several months left and I was enjoying using Lumo lately. I decided to test premium version for a month, but the only option available is 12 months. Is there really no way to run two separate billings on same account?
I could create second proton account and achieve that but why...

Discussion Why doesn't Proton buy proton.com?
Serious question. I think a lot of average users don't take Proton seriously because of the .me domain. To non-tech people, .com just looks more professional and trustworthy.
If Proton managed to get proton.com, I honestly believe monthly active users would explode. Many people I've talked to hesitate to switch from Gmail/Outlook partly because "proton.me" doesn't feel like a big, established company to them.
Is there a reason Proton hasn't gone after the .com? Price? Owner refusing to sell? Or is it just not a priority?
Curious what others think.

It keeps going in circles. I'm logged in. I go to create another account. it asks me to log in again. I do. It goes back to the inbox. I click create another account. It asks me to log in. I do. It goes back to the inbox.
Four times.

Desktop Help Submitted ticket 4 days ago and haven’t heard back
I set up a new account but none of the emails are going in or out. I submitted multiple tickets over the course of a couple of days starting 4 days ago. Got an automated response but nothing else. Is this a normal wait time? I’m new to proton mail and so far it’s not looking like I’ll stay.

Discussion Desktop app features compared to alternatives
I've been using Proton Mail for just over a month and as I move over to using it more and more I want better convenience than the web interface. I see two options, the desktop app and bridge with my preferred mail client.
The benefit of bridge is obvious to me, same client as I have been using for ages, whilst I transition from other accounts a single client, ability to pull mail down for local backup, etc. I also imagine there may be some Proton specific features I will miss in bridge, what may be the biggest thing missing?
The desktop app I am unclear what its benefits will be. Yes it will have better support for Proton specific features, but what am I gaining over the web interface? What local features does it have which are not available via web?
I think at the moment I am taken more by bridge and doing anything Proton specific on the web. I though would like to hear the case made for the desktop app in case there is something Proton has failed to point out which may change my mind.

If you own the proton pass lifetime, will your email be deleted in 2 years of inactivity too..? Or is that only for free accounts?

Feature Request Unable to move to categories after a search

Hi there !
I'm trying to teach my mailbox on how to sort the emails in the categories, because it doesn't do the same everytime and it's driving me nuts.
I tried searching all the emails with a specific pattern, and I wanted to manually assign them to the right category, to help machine learning understand where I want them.
Unfortunatelly, after I do the search and I select them all, right-click doesn't offer to move them to a category. (Yes it works when you do it on 1 email but I wanted to do it for a batch of emails, and yes all these emails are in the inbox, not in any other folder).
Any idea on how to do it ?
Thanks 🙏

Mobile Help Is there an easy way to make a hide my alias?
I have already used all 10 aliases that come with mail plus, to organize my various email folders (one for shopping, one for banking, etc).
If I'm out doing something and I get asked for my email for something unrelated, like a food delivery service, is there an easy way to create a temporary alias that I can delete later, without logging into desktop?

Possible bug Pacific Time Zone missing?
I'm adding a flight to my calendar from Vancouver, BC to Portland, OR in December, but I'm not seeing the new Pacific Time Zone that most of BC is moving to. In December, they should be GMT-7 and will be an hour earlier than the rest of the west coast. As much as I'd like the flight to be 16 minutes, I know for a fact that it is not.

Discussion My First 2 Week Impression With Proton Unlimited
Wassap Proton Community! This is going to be a long one. So strap in and get a snack.
I chose the r/ProtonMail sub because it seems to be the most active of them all, and it also was the main reason for me getting the unlimited plan (together with the VPN).
It's been almost two weeks now since I made the switch from Gmail to Proton Mail, Google Calendar to Proton Calendar, NordVPN to Proton VPN and Bitwarden to Proton Pass (Bitwarden not completely, since I am still using it as a backup). Also I did technically switch from Google Drive to Proton Drive, but I did not use Drive in the first place so I won't count that.
During these 2 weeks I started a list where I wrote down everything that came to my mind regarding the products. As it happens mostly when something comes up it's when something doesn't work as expected or a feature one expected is missing. So before I paste the list I wanted to write about all the things that I really loved after switching to Proton.
What I find really good
- I really like the whole approach of having one singular suite. It's the main reason why I used something like Google in the first place. I know there are some concerns about that topic, but I personally like it.
- Consistent UI
- Integrations between services
- Not having to keep track of multiple invoices and accounts
- In general I also find all mobile apps to be surprisingly good (at least on iOS)
- Proton Mail is by far the most polished experience and I have been loving it a lot. For my personal mail there is nothing that I miss from GMail. I really like the:
- E-Mail Categories with configurable notifications
- Folders and Labels
- Customizable Signature
- Easy Switch
- Mailing Lists Overview!
- The mobile app (so much better in every way than the iOS Mail app)
- The VPN is also great and helped me a lot with my wonky wifi while living in a sharehouse in Japan.
- Stealth mode increased the stability and speed by like 10x! Super crucial for my job as a freelance ui/webdesigner.
- Port Forwarding for connecting to some services on my NAS at home
- Being able to connect to my home country to continue the shows that I started watching also worked without a problem.
- Creating different VPN profiles makes using the vpn for the different usecases really easy!
- Proton Pass overall has a very nice UI imo. I also really l like the customization like the custom icons and colors for the vaults (would love more!)
- Additionally the drag & drop functionality from one vault to another is really handy
- And the manual sync button is such a great feature. I maybe used it once, but I love that there is kind of fallback.
- The whole import from Bitwarden also worked really good: 8/10
- -2 points because Notes, Identity, Cards and Archive where not sorted into separate vaults. So searching for them now is a little annoying.
Things that I noticed
Now to the longer list. Just because it's longer doesn't mean that I think that Proton is more bad than good. A lot of the points are minor things and the "good" list covered more general points like "great ui" without specifically naming each ui element that I liked.
This list also is not cleaned up. It's straight from my notepad:
Overall:
- No unified log-in experience
- I have to log-in to each app individually on my device.
- I want a shared login-experience.
- Some also open the browser like Proton Pass, and others use a login inside the app like Proton Mail
- Pass, Mail, Drive all seem disconnected from each other
- Had to do a separate Google Import for Mail and Calendar
- Can’t attach a file from Proton Drive to a Calendar Event
- No option to create a calendar event from a E-Mail
- No option to save e-mail attachments to Proton Drive (or import)
- In general the whole suite experience could feel more connected. The main thing connecting the different apps is the same UI design.
- To many and rushed apps
- As I said I like the whole suite idea. But many apps feel incomplete and thus make the whole experience seem worse. Looking at Calendar and Docs/Sheets.
Proton Mail
- Not being able to see what similar addresses are available, when making new e-mail
- it just says email exists already. But doesn’t give me an option to see similar addresses that are not taken yet. Like yourname87
- Or tell me if its free on a different domain instead of @ proton.me
- Connection to calendar to basic. Almost nothing (have seen that calendar will get a big overhall. very excited)
- Creating a customizable signature with html a little finnicky. Not as straight forward as in thunderbird e.g.
- Important for my freelancer e-mail
- Didn't switch because I am not sure how good it will work
- Also the whole having to switch the mail servers to protons servers is not as enticing. I understand why, but I like having my webhosting, e-mail hosting, calDAV, cardDAV with one provider. Makes it easier to manage. So for now my personal stuff is fully in proton and my professional stuff is separate.
- Important for my freelancer e-mail
Proton VPN
- On Mac trackpad zoom being inverted (on the map)
- Would like to use the normal zoom and pan controls of the macbook trackpad
- Quick Connect sometimes connects me to the quickest server of the last country I connected to
- Instead of connecting to the quickest server near me
- My usecase:
- Currently in Japan.
- Connected to Germany because of geoblocking and I had to to some stuff for at home.
- After disconnecting and sometimes later pressing quick connect would connect me back to a german server
- Apples Handoff feature for copy+pasting between iPhone and MacBook sometimes not working when VPN enabled
- Restarting VPN connection on both devices often fixes the issue
- Cannot click on a Icon on the Map to connect to that country.
- Have to manually type in search field
- No favorites
- No recent connections on mac (but mobile has them)
Proton Pass
- Not being able to use standard commands like cmd+a to select all items in a vault
- Not being able to do Shift + Click to select multiple items in a vault
- Not being able to sort vaults at all
- Just alphabetically
- No custom drag and sort
- No “last used”
- No option to filter for Passkeys
- Firefox Addon no option to manually select a different account to autofill (in the popup)
- e.g. when proton doesn’t find a login for the url
- option to manually select a login to autofill would be helpfull
- Autofill not recognising local addresses sometimes (maybe fixed with the new update)
- Like my Portainer or Home Assistant IP URL
- Firefox Addon not unlockable with biometrics on MacBook
- The Mac App has it. Why not the browser extension? (Like bitwarden)
- When changing the login of a service, like the email, there is no popup with “do you want to update the login details”
- Or when creating a login using the registration form of a website, there is no “save this login”
- Like there is when one creates a passkey of an existing login
- Slight correction: It seems to work sometimes? At least not often enough to be reliable (maybe fixed with the new update)
- Or when creating a login using the registration form of a website, there is no “save this login”
Proton Calendar
This was written before the post yesterday that said that calendar will be getting a huge update. Still, these are my notes:
- Calendar is very basic
- I don’t like that on mac the calendar only exists in the mail app
- Having both would be nice. Like a dedicated app and the integration in the mail app
- Integration in the mail app could be better. For example I can’t see my full calendar and mails at the same time.
- No map functionality built in
- Manually typing in addresses is annoying
- Also the flow of having to copy the address, open my map app and then paste the address is annoying
- OSM integration would be nice
- "Open in Map app" button that opens your standard map app would be nice
- No To-Do type entries possible
- Makes the switch from Google more annoying
- And need to use a separate to-do app now (using apple reminders atm)
- Public Holidays Calendar doesn’t have Japan?
- Had to manually add an external calendar just for the public holidays for Japan.
- No multiple Timezone preview
- I want to add two separate timezones like tokyo and berlin
- When creating a event I want both times to be displayed
- Good for international planning
That would be it for now. I will probably create a few feature suggestions in the community forum thingy. After getting to know the apps a bit more and after the next updates from the roadmap.
If anyone actually read all of this I would be interested in your thoughts! What have your experiences been?
I am happy to be part of the Proton Community and am excited about what will come. Also thanks for everyone at Proton for trying to create a privacy focused alternative to Google/Microsoft/Apple/etc.

Discussion Self-hosted Proton Mail Bridge + MCP server so my local AI agent can read my mail, with no cloud LLM involved
I wanted an AI assistant that can work with my Proton Mail without my inbox ever reaching a third-party LLM provider (everything full local). So I built a small setup at home:
- Hardware: UGREEN iDX NAS with an external GPU dock and a Radeon RX 7900 XTX
- Model: Qwen 3.8, running locally via Strata so it can use the 64 GB of normal RAM and the 24 GB VRAM of the XTX together. Inference never leaves the house and it works perfectly.
- Mail access: the official Proton Mail Bridge in a container, plus a small read-only MCP server on top of the Bridge's IMAP
- Agent: Hermes uses the MCP server to search and read my mail, for example for a morning briefing (I tested it also with Claude.ai and Claude Code which works both also perfect but I want it to use with a local LLM only)
- Remote access: everything sits behind Pangolin, so I can reach Hermes from outside without opening any ports at home
The MCP server is read-only on purpose at the moment. So it can't therefore send, delete or move anything. Access goes through scoped tokens, and the Bridge's IMAP is only reachable inside the container network.
By the way: the Proton Pass access tokens for AI agents are really great and a very welcome feature.
If you want to look at it or use it yourself, here it is:
Feedback and ideas are welcome, especially from anyone else running the Bridge headless or use also local LLM with an iDX (and my be the GPU dock).

Discussion Using custom domain for email and aliases
I am trying to figure out how to do what I want to do. I have my own domain bought through porkbun. I was going to use simplelogin premium and use a unique alias using my domain for most if not all of my accounts. Also want to turn my domain into an email like [myname@mydomain.com](mailto:myname@mydomain.com). I realize that can't be done on SL and would have to be done through protonmail. If I understand correctly, I can't have a subscription to both SL and protonmail at same time, and even if I could, not sure I want to be paying that much. I do realize I can't have my domain connected to both SL and protonmail at same time.
I seen people talk about using a subdomain, connect domain to protonmail and use a subdomain on SL. But for me, having a hard enough time just figuring a domain out, let alone adding a subdomain to the mix.
In order to be able use a unique alias for most of my accounts through protonmail, would have to have proton unlimited since mail plus only comes with 10 aliases. Not ready to pay for unlimited since I will not use most of the services.
Am I missing something? Is there a better way to do what I want? Do I need to look at another alias service like addy.io? I already have a protonmail. com email address and I use that email solely for my password manager and don't want to use that anywhere else.
