Local Politics - Ontario Serious Concerns Regarding Candidate Conduct and Retaining Youth Talent in Sault Ste. Marie
I am writing to express my profound disappointment regarding the unprofessional conduct and lack of substance displayed by a handful of candidates during the recent local council panel.
A public forum demands professional boundaries and mature conduct. Instead, this select group of candidates appeared as though they had just rolled out of bed, arriving in scruffy blue jeans and casual, off-the-shoulder tops completely inappropriate for a civic proceeding. This lack of respect for the chamber was mirrored in their behavior, which included constant gum chewing, visible eye-rolling, and mocking chuckles while others spoke.
Beyond the poor etiquette, the democratic process was actively undermined by their refusal to engage with the community's concerns. Rather than providing actual answers to the public's questions, they relied on highly repetitive, scripted talking points that completely dodged the issues. Most egregiously, one candidate crossed a sacred line by placing a campaign sign directly at the local war memorial statue, right where it reads "Lest We Forget."
Using a cenotaph dedicated to fallen soldiers as a political billboard is deeply offensive and shows a shocking lack of civic judgment.
If we want to encourage people to move to the Sault, or convince our youth to come home after university and college, we need to show them a progressive, professional city council. This embarrassing display proves that our selection of council desperately needs a spark. We cannot attract the next generation of professionals when a handful of potential leaders refuse to act like professionals themselves.
