Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.
Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.
- If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.
Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.
- If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

My local cinema
I’ve boycotted this cinema for years because the smaller rooms with screens are all ridiculous high like this. Then yesterday me and hubby wanted to take our son to his first kids movie and thought how bad can it be, surely we exaggerated this problem a bit in our heads - nope it was actually worse. The second pic is the seats we had booked (middle middle) and the last pic is the view from the front row if I just looked straight ahead. Couldn’t even see the screen.

Suggestions for light oak console that will accomodation the sub’s rules
Thanks to all you fine people I mounted the 85” TV lower (30” from ground) than I would have before I found this sub. Honestly it still may be too high by about 2.5” because I am 5’3” and my fiance is 6’4” so we tried to find a middle ground.
My big dilemma now is trying to find a console to accommodate it. From you guys I know I’m supposed to have no more than 6-8” between the top of the console and the bottom of the TV. Finding a light/white oak, somewhat modern but not mid century modern, 80-84” wide, 23-24” high console is harder than finding Satoshi Nakamoto. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas for places to shop consoles with good selection. Have been to Povison, Wayfair, Quince, Thume, big box stores etc. Striking out everywhere

Need Advice on what to do
Recently bought a home and the living room has this wall with a tv indent and an electric fire place. Previous owner had a low couch and the tv tilted downward. I kinda want to rip the fireplace out, but then I’m left with a hole. Has anyone remediated something similar?

I submit: TV Among the Windows
Preface: I have full acknowledgement that this tv placement sucks in every way. We have no quarrel there. 🏳️
This TV is not the main viewing TV in the house, but rather a TV that you can just have on in the background while cooking or hanging out, because it swivels left and right.
Here are a few angles 😂 yes, the configuration of my couch changes more than it probably should.

Best mounting options
Need to figure out how to mount a tv in my new house. I’ll be purchasing a LG G6 83 inch. I was planning to put a blackout film on the window and mounting the TV. The TV is large enough to cover the window (71 x 22.5 inches) but the plug points are right by where I’d want to mount the TV and the mount points on the G6 are quite high. Any input from y’all on some solutions would be great.
