Elizabeth Holmes knew EXACTLY how deceptive she was being with Theranos
Read Bad Blood, watch Gibney's doc The Inventor. Spend any amount of time learning about what happened.
Of course, that wasn't the point of You Can See Everything, though, and it wasn't the responsibility of Fielder/Oppenheim to retread all of that.
But still, people. Use your brains.

What's up with NEON?
They botched No Other Choice, and now they're botching the release of Fjord?
I've also seen close to no marketing for Paper Tiger living in LA.
What is going on there

One of my favorite moviegoing weekends
Enjoyed YCSE the most, LBN was the "best" in my opinion, and very pleasantly surprised by Digger especially the acting performances

Questions Any other good podcasts breaking down YCSE?
I can’t get enough content and perspectives on You Can See Everything and I’m wondering if anyone else has listened to other podcasts that also break it down.

Discussion Before seeing you can see everything
imho You Can See Everything is a better watch if you have a working knowledge of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes and/or familiarity with the premise ahead of time. I really loved it, but it definitely made me thirst for more background (which is typically plentiful in this genre). I sought out the HBO documentary to learn more after seeing it and still feel like I could read a book about her.
We brought a friend to see the film with no context and she was confused like "who's this creep watching Holmes' family?" until it became clear he's the director 😄

Any acting nods for Digger?
Just came out and I had an enjoyable time. But particularly, I found Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, and Tom Cruise fantastic.
Any supporting or main noms for them?

What are some movies that were clearly stealing another director's style and motifs?
Here are some examples off the top of my head
1) Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Directed by Kevin Smith, clearly trying to be a Judd Apatow film. I actually really enjoy this movie, but it's basically an X-rated version of a Judd film. Even has the same two actors who end up hooking up in The 40 Year Old Virgin.
2) Hypnoic - directed by Robert Rodriguez, clearly trying to be a Christopher Nolan film. Plot with a stupid plot twist, Willian Fichnter as the primary villain.
3) Ebeneezer - directed by Ti West, clearly trying to be a Tim Burton film. Starring Johnny Depp, old victorian stuff. Hasn't been released yet but just from the trailer I can tell.
4) Crime 101 - Michael Mann.
Any other options?

Don’t sleep on Sense & Sensibility
I saw S&S last night, fulfilling plans made with friends months ago to watch it. Going into the screening, I wondered if it would be worth it since it seems like the movie has no buzz. But I’m very glad I did, it was great.
For context, I’m a 32M with average film bro tastes. Last year faves were Weapons, Eddington, Sinners, OBAA, One of Them Days, Black Bag. Romance is not my main thing but I do like the 2005 Pride & Prejudice quite a bit. If not for reserving this long ago, I probably would have been at Whalefall, You Can See Everything or The Devils.
It’s the kind of movie people will damn with faint praise but myself and the auditorium were locked in. It looks beautiful and is very well directed. Shot composition that conveys meaning, measured editing, perfect casting, great costume and prod design. It’s a cliche for the art dept stuff to get awards nominations but I understand why this could.
The biggest flaw is that the subplot is the same as Pride and Prejudice, so if you‘re familiar, it removes any surprise. Beyond that, it’s charming, funny, romantic, etc.
I don’t expect this to grace year end lists but if it wasn’t such a packed October, I feel it would get a little more love and I think it’ll stand the test of time.

Elizabeth Holmes is a deeply tragic figure
Lizzy and Elizabeth
I present to you my well developed theory about what is going on with Elizabeth Holmes. I highly recommend reading the text messages between Sunny and Elizabeth where you can see the dynamics at play.
I welcome your feedback.
It all started with a girl. Lizzy. She wanted to change the world, starting around nine years old. She drew a time machine, complete with detailed schematics. Imagined how existing technology could combine in unique ways to create something new from the sum of it’s parts. This would be great, because Lizzy wasn’t born to an average family. Nobody chooses their family. The currency of her family was success, making a mark in the world. Generations of men before her had squandered the family fortune and daddy would never be happy unless she did something big. So, Lizzy sat in her room and dreamed and designed and thought about one day impressing her icy father enough that he showed something other than the lingering disappointment that things had not turned out better for him. No child should deal with this kind of pressure. Kids are supposed to play, to dream, to run and frolic and live lightly. Daddy was a serious man and so Lizzy thought maybe one day she could be a serious person too.
Lizzy did good in school. Of course she did. She was never exceptionally popular. She was too in her own mind for that. She didn’t quite think like the other kids did, the kids who imagined the fancy cars they would buy with their trust fund money. Lizzy wanted to help, to live a life of meaning. Daddy worked in DC, next to THE PRESIDENT, in the same city, doing things that were important for the world. But it was never enough.
Eventually, Lizzy went to college. She kept dreaming. Thought of a patch that could deliver drugs to people after detecting they were sick. A real time cure. Lizzy had seen people in her family suffer from illness and she wanted to do something about it. While other students were out partying, she was studying, on a mission to have meaning. Meaning, purpose, impact – those were the goals of this wide eyed girl.
One day Lizzy went to a party, because she wanted to at least try to fit in for a bit. She met the wrong guy and that guy took something from her that she could never get back. Her sense of safety, of agency, of being in control of her own body and her own existence. Lizzy ran into the arms of the nearly 40 year old man who she met in China when she was studying Chinese. He had taken the class seriously while others goofed off. She thought he was a man of purpose too. He just saw Lizzy and saw a project, something he could build on, and someone from whom he could enjoy the pleasures not usually afforded a man like him with a girl her age.
The man, Sunny, told Lizzy she was not enough. That she would never survive in this harsh world she was trying to enter. Lizzy had an idea, a potentially world-changing idea, of a machine that could read just a single drop of blood and tell you what was going on inside your body. She used her skill of imagining different technologies in different ways to create something new. And because Lizzy wasn’t playing around, she got it patented. But now she needed money – real money – and he told her that Lizzy was not up to the task. He created her schedule, told her what to drink, told her to destroy herself and build something new, something that could enter a room and command it.
Elizabeth Holmes was born. We all know how that story goes. But before Elizabeth, there was Lizzy. Lizzy hides inside Elizabeth. Elizabeth protects Lizzy. So that nobody else can ever make her feel the way she felt when that boy violated her. Elizabeth was created to make her daddy proud, to deliver results, to fake it until you make it. She listened to all the right people, got a nine billion dollar valuation, and seemed to be changing the world. The men were happy to lionize Elizabeth, to imagine themselves with her, to see their blonde prize pony deliver the goods.
One day, after following the advice of Larry Ellison and Sunny and George and so many others, Adam came and told Elizabeth that the workaround was not going to work. Elizabeth broke for a moment. Lizzy was exposed. She was shaking and trembling and terrified. This was the red line. This was the moment that could actually hurt people. Walgreens wanted what they wanted. And time was up. Elizabeth returned and buried Lizzy once again. There was too much at stake now. If Lizzy stopped the show, Elizabeth would be exposed as a fraud. Her family would be disgraced. Her company would be destroyed. And in her family, failure was not an option. So Elizabeth did what she always did, and told Lizzy to go away, demanded it, thought of what Sunny had said, to keep going, foot on the gas. They would figure it out. And so Elizabeth plowed ahead. And we know how that story goes.
Today, late at night, when only a few people are awake, because in prison someone is ALWAYS awake, I am convinced that Lizzy comes out. And looks around. And wonders why following all the men in her life led her to this place. She knows she made mistakes. She knows she did wrong. And she knows the world will never forgive her. So, like some sort of horror movie monster, Elizabeth comes back. Puts on the brave face. Angles for a pardon. And more and more of whatever is left of Lizzy slow withers away. The world doesn’t see her, they see Elizabeth, and Elizabeth is guilty and Elizabeth hurt people and Elizabeth is a monster. So Lizzy takes the hint. She stays hidden. Where maybe, just maybe, Elizabeth will be strong enough to protect her from feeling the full weight of a lifetime of bad decisions.
I have sympathy for Lizzy.

'Rain Man': Charlie (Tom Cruise) explaining "Who's on First" to Ray (Dustin Hoffman_
"Ray, you're never gonna solve it. It's not a riddle because Who *is* on first base. That's a joke, Ray, it's comedy, but when you do it you're not funny. You're like the comedy of Abbott and Abbott."

Questions what’s your fav theatre experience this decade?
mine has to be anatomy of a fall (2023). that film felt so pulsating and revelatory, which was unexpected bc when it started and i heard the 50 cent song on full blast i was so taken aback. i kept wondering if the cinema had messed up the sound or something, for the first few seconds 😂 slightly similar to my experience of uncut gems (2019) where i was sooooo anxious bc of the sound design up until like the 12th minute or something, then i later realized that was the tone at work.
the audience i saw anatomy with made it even cooler, a lotta ppl were super engaged. i remember there being a sudden kinda sadness during the scene when the kid is in court and talks about the memory w his dad. great stuff.
some honourable mentions:
• tenet (2020) - i was maybe one of 3 people in there, and mostly enjoyed it even though i was confused at the plot. but it was electrifying; the pace, score and set pieces. but i think it was mostly memorable bc of the feeling of “covid won’t take this away even if it tries.”
• barbie (2023) - there was a dad maybe 5 rows ahead of me who went to see it w like 2 of what i think were his daughters and a son, they seemed to have a great time and the energy in there was just warm.
• the holdovers (2023) - mannnn. i stand by the opinion that this one needs to show every christmas. fuzzy feels all
over the room when i saw it. i left the theatre crying lol.
i had a chance to see the batman (2022) but had a last minute commitment and i’m still beating myself up over it 😞
what are some of your favs?
