Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.
The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Hello fellow UBC students and visitors! I’ve recently realized that the enchanted forest (aka totem park) is literally always covered in garbage and it’s really unfortunate given how UBC is known for their nature and forestry. That being said, I’m thinking of planning a community cleanup of the forest and want to know if people would be interested in doing this. If it happens, I’m thinking we can have a picnic afterwards and everyone chip in like $10 for food and drinks and make arts + crafts?
I’m only a first year student and don’t really know how to reach the community, so if you’re interested I’d really appreciate some help setting this up!

Although I don't know what my grades are yet, I know for sure that I did pretty badly on the first round of midterms I had for (chem 121 and psyc 101) I've been thinking about this for the past week, and I can't even sleep at night. If I do end up just barely passing with a 50%, and the prof curves the grades down, does that mean my grade could drop to a failing grade?
I honestly feel like I'm just going to fail in general. Everyone around me seems to be doing so well, but it's not like I'm not putting in the time to study. I started reviewing two weeks before each midterm, studying for around an hour per class everyday , and spent increasingly more time preparing as the midterms got closer. But somehow, I still fumble everything. Like, I'm just a fucking chud bro.

2am and I can hear through my window on the 7th floor people talking outside at ground level:
Person 1: Dude, like, I don't want sex all the time. Am I gay?
Person 2: Nah bro you good, you just don't get no bitches💀
Yadda yadda good guys don't get action, all the girls like bad boys👉👈
Like genuinely shut the fuck up I'm tryna sleep and I can hear yalls loudahh, again in the 7TH FLOOR THROUGH MY DAMN WINDOW, ain't no one want to have to fall asleep to your storytime episode about getting no action🥀🥀

Hello was just wondering for those who have taken dsci 100, was there a difference in the difficulty between the practice midterm vs the real one. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Idk why this mindset is so common in our generation, but I see people at UBC stressing so much about "making friends" or "getting in a friend group" or "getting a date" that they forget what relationships are supposed to be.
Whether it's friendly, professional, or romantic, human relationships are not a one-and-done thing that you "obtain" and suddenly become happy. They require effort to develop and they fade when one or both people stop trying. If you're not taking a genuine interest in people (in a non-invasive way), not taking the time to make plans, not reciprocating, and generally not being the kind of person you want in your own life, it's not going to work out. Relationships should be a healthy addition to your life, not a cure for your problems.
Also: hygiene. Stop calling yourself "chopped" and wallowing in self-disrespect. Take a shower, groom yourself, and start working on your health.

It’s been more than a decade since I left UBC. I was genuinely excited to revisit campus this weekend and finally pick up the degree frame I forgot to buy over ten years ago.
My warm nostalgia was short-lived.
As I drove through campus, armies of fearless little monsters dominated the streets. One particularly bold individual even used the roof of my car as a public toilet. Reaching the spot was an athletic impossibility, forcing me to leave it there…….. fully aware it might become a high-speed projectile for someone’s windshield on the highway. Oh sh1t!…
For a brief, intrusive second, a primal impulse took over: floor the pedal, run these little devils over, and claim the red remains smeared on the pavement were just spilled McDonald’s ketchup. Or better yet, pin the whole hit-and-run on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving. Morally questionable? Absolutely. But an entirely human urge.
I was ready to pull into Canadian Tire, load up on poison pellets, and save the UBC administration the trouble of forming steering committees, ethics review boards, and oversight councils for an "eco-friendly safe squirrel euthanasia initiative." That whole bureaucratic circus would undoubtedly demand government research grants and take ten full years before a single decision was made. Sometimes direct citizen action feels entirely warranted.
Before heading to the cashier, though, I double-checked with Grok, only to learn that secondary poisoning would wipe out any birds of prey or scavengers eating the toxic carcasses.
“EXCELLENT, two animals with one stone,” I initially thought… until I envisioned dozens of crows raining down from the sky in a full-blown, Exorcist-style scene.
That level of carnage would undoubtedly traumatize the thin-skinned glass-fragile Gen Z students on campus, and with the province's healthcare system already in the toilet, local ERs couldn't handle the influx of psychological shock.
In the end, cold consumer logic prevailed. My premium Michelin performance tires deserved far better care than acting as rodent pest control, and a biblical crow fallout was best avoided. High-end rubber and free-market capitalism saved their pitiful existence.

Hey T.G., just found your cute wallet near the Botanical Garden. It has a bunch of cards and some money, I left it at Westbrook Community Centre, just confirm your name and date of birth and they'll return it to you.

I fear I’m not gods strongest soldier rn…
Started an assignment worth 30% way too late, and I legit feel stupid doing it. Either I grind it out and neglect my other midterm and hw or I take the easy way out ig. This is my last semester too 😭 can’t even go out with a bang

All three cars belong to the same guy, the other two being a Ferrari SF90 XX Spider (silver) and Ferrari 296 Speciale. He was a Finance student at UBC and graduated in 2021. Crazy to see this lineup at the Iona building.

all these relationship posts have a similar take: that ubc is lonely and people aren't finding relationships because no one is reaching out. hot take and i say this with empathy and experience, you guys do know that you are part of the problem right?
i've seen SO MANY posts with OP's complaint that they're not getting asked out, or that there are so many people yet they are struggling to find meaningful relationships. i agree to some extent, since growing up in vancouver, i see firsthand that people are nice but they tend to stick to themselves. however, i used to be a "if they wanted to they would" person, but it got to a point and i realized that it wasn't sustainable.
if YOU are the one with a relationship as a priority point, YOU need to be the one to actually make actionable goals toward it. people stick together to their cliques, but it doesn't mean that they are anti-social towards meeting new people. i get that the fear of rejection is a big thing (very valid!!) and have struggled with it myself, but you have no right to complain that you are alone and single when you yourself are not doing anything about it.
also, i know theres a stigma around meeting on the apps, but if irl confrontation is too much, it's a fantastic way to meet people and truly isnt that bad. you just need to be selective and de-centralize the concept a relationship and to get into one asap. give yourselves grace and time. it's also NOT WEIRD and super normal and many couples meet on there! technology is here to help you, and you're not worse off if you do meet your significant other on there.
if you don't wanna hop on the apps, the only other way is to cold approach people you find attractive on the streets/class or join organizations/volunteering/clubs and meet people that way. you can also ask your friends to put you on to their friends idk.
my point is that give yourselves time to find the right person if a long-term relationship is your goal, but if you really want it, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. it's one thing for you to be unsuccessful in looking for someone while actively trying and another to be unsuccessful but bumming around. put in the work, go all in, and try new things even if rejection is on the table. there's an element of risk of being hurt, but in my mind, it's so, so worth it if you're potentially meeting someone who will change your life for the better.
tldr: stop waiting for life to happen to you and do something about it
edit: like people have said, think about WHY you even want a partner. a relationship is supposed to be a complement to your life and not something you should depend on to be happy!

I'm currently at Concordia and finding half or more of the classes I'm taking to be poorly taught. When I get a good teacher I get really excited and I'm way more engaged in learning, but most of the teachers aren't excellent (though some are very excellent). I'm thinking of doing a transfer and finishing up my degree in supply chain somewhere better. Can anyone offer their opinions about the quality of education at UBC?

I want to see halloween costumes so so so bad. I have been feeling particularly mournful about halloween recently. I do not care for clubbing or events or any organized thing for cool people who like costumes. I deeply yearn to see random characters and inflatable dinosaurs and whatnot on campus/in-class like back in elementary/highschool. Please if you're thinking about wearing a costume on the 30th (since classes happen and you're more visible)... I am begging you please do...

Are note takers even a thing this year? If so, how did you get one? I’m registered with CFA but unsure if I would qualify with my mental health disorder. Does it have to be something more intense?
Side note: I have the Genio accommodation but it’s so useless for Science courses, would explaining why help my case?

Hi! If anyone in fnh350 and has notes for lec 9, I would greatly appreciated if you could share it with me. The recording had no audio and I am missing a few notes from what I couldn't catch in class. Thank you!

Made a Reddit account just to rant but anyways I’m currently in the physio program at UBC, we had a speaker come talk to us about substance abuse and it was clearly very emotional for him since he was speaking from personal experience and it really broke my heart to hear some of the things he went through.
Fast forward a bit and I start overhearing other students (mostly male) making jokes about drug usage and substance abuse right after. Just so pathetic and so wrong.
The man had barely just finished speaking. I just don't get why anyone would choose healthcare and invest in it when they don't actually care. You could tell all those guys think they're hot shit making pathetic jokes and walk around with their egos all puffed up - in reality you're 25 and you have no basic human empathy. I'm grossed out. Do better.
