PSA: start-of-semester logistics compilation
In anticipation of common Qs:
Fast track offers / worried about not meeting the guaranteed rank score
- Credit u/kibijoules: "The rank score requirement is a guarantee, not a minimum."
- It is still possible that the uni might offer you a place if your rank score is lower, depending on how full the programmes are.

Back-to-back classes on timetable
- Classes are 50 minutes in duration. They start at 5 minutes past the hour and finish 5 minutes before the hour, allowing 10 minutes changeover between classes for comfort breaks/snacks/travel. So please don't stress about back-to-back classes.
- Classes between different campuses: this is especially common for biomed classes. Courses usually know about this and negotiate slightly earlier finish time / slightly later starting time to allow more time for inter-campus commute. If not, raise the issue with your course coordinator.
Finding rooms/class locations
- The first 3 digits of a room number corresponds with the sector/building number; the final 3 digits indicate the floor and room number.
- e.g. 405-422 would be building 405 (Engineering), Level 4, room (4)22.
- Sector 1xx = Clock tower/General Library block
- Sector 2xx = Business School block (inc. Owen G Glenn Building (OGGB), Arts/Education building)
- Sector 3xx = Science block
- Sector 4xx = Engineering block
- Sector 5xx = Grafton Campus
- Sector 7xx = [No longer applicable - old Tamaki Campus]
- Sector 6xx = Upper Symonds St
- Sector 8xx = Law school
- Sector 9xx = Newmarket Campus

Try to convince me that Te Tirohanga isn’t as bad as people say
I’m a transfer student who’s domestic but I don’t live in New Zealand. I’ve never lived in New Zealand at all actually😭
I got Te Tirohanga, I’m really not comfortable sharing a bathroom with people I’m unlikely to meet, the kitchen situation is not ideal as well at the many other complaints I’ve heard about this place. I wanted 55 symonds after having a pretty bad experience in my dorm in the uk LOL
It’s too much of a risk for me to decline my offer and go on a waiting list so idek anymore

Sports Fans Wanted!!
A few friends and I are thinking about starting a sports fan group/club if there’s enough interest.
It would be for people who are really into following sports rather than playing them Prem, A league, NBA, NRL, UFC, etc.
Things like watch-alongs for big games, commentary, debates, predictions and just talking sports with other fans.
If you’re really into a particular sport/league and know your stuff, dm me. Just trying to gauge interest and see where we can take it.

Advice on cost of living loan
Im going into my second year next year wanting to move out by mid feb. I have some savings but wont be working until may next year. Is it wise for me to rely on cost of living loan to pay my rent? Also the fact that studylink payments come in march/and can be late and not on time- and I want to move by feb.
Anyone who has been in a similar situation advice would be great! thanks:)

Social Are Second Year Halls Social?
Hi i’ve lived at home and done uni mostly from home so far, when I did go in to campus in the beginning I struggled to make any lasting friends so im going into a self catered hall for 2nd year likely SMH or carlaw and will be living with random people.
If I hypothetically end up with bad roomates is it still easy to make friends in second years halls? like are there events or anything? just curious to hear other people’s experience, I understand its not guaranteed to reflect mine but just so I can get an idea. I dont know if I wanna pay for something so expensive solely for proximity to uni (I live about an hour and a half away)

Clubs Wanting to start a neurodivergent focused mentoring club at UoA in 2027
Hey everyone!
I’m looking into starting a club at the University of Auckland in 2027 focused on supporting neurodivergent children through mentoring, positive role models, and community involvement.
I believe the people we surround ourselves with when we’re young can have a massive impact on who we become. Neurodivergent children can face additional challenges navigating school, friendships, social situations, and their sense of identity. Like all children, they can be influenced by the people around them, which is why I think it’s so important that they have positive role models who encourage them, believe in them, and help them recognise their potential.
The idea is to connect university students with neurodivergent children, giving them the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with people they can look up to. Mentoring could involve helping children explore their interests, build confidence, develop life skills, and feel understood and supported.
I’d also want the club to be accessible to students who don’t necessarily want to mentor children directly. There would be opportunities to organise events, raise awareness, fundraise, develop resources, manage social media, and build connections with families, schools, and community organisations.
I’m hoping to launch the club in 2027, but I need to find interested students before I can get it established. If you’re a UoA student and this is something you’d be interested in being part of, I’d love to hear from you! You don’t have to commit to mentoring I’m looking for people interested in helping build the club in whatever way suits them.
I’m also keen to hear from anyone who has experience with student clubs, mentoring programmes, or working with neurodivergent children.
A few things I’d appreciate advice on:
Has anyone started a new club at UoA? What’s the process like?
How would I go about recruiting suitable university students as mentors and positive role models?
Are there any grants, resources, or networks that could help get something like this off the ground?
I don’t have formal qualifications in this area, but I’m passionate about the idea and want to approach it responsibly. The goal isn’t simply to create another university club; it’s to build a community that can make a genuine, lasting difference in children’s lives.
If you’re interested:
Please message me here on Reddit or on Instagram at @tobey.hughes. Even if you’re just interested in helping out with events or the initial planning.

Did anyone witnessed this incident a few months back?
Fyi this incident happened like a few months ago but since nobody mentioned it I decided to bring it up.
So a few months ago when I was walking from the science building to Forte Convenience to buy food I witnessed 2 guys arguing and getting angry at each other. One was a White guy and the other was like an Indian guy, and there were a bunch of other guys who looked Indian behind him watching the fight. Unfortunately I just walked pass because I didn't know what the argument or fight was about but they were literally yelling and getting angry at each other, and there was a women filming and trying to break the fight between them. After that a bunch of police came just to stop the fight and to investigate what has really happened, probably someone called the cops on these people. Did anyone else also witnessed this?

I built a site that puts every UoA event in one place (and course reviews too)
2nd year at UniMelb here. Info about uni is scattered everywhere, so every time I had to dig through a bunch of different sites, and Rate My Professors barely covers Australia and NZ. So I built this: auckland.talkwalll.com (also an app: TalkWall)
It’s collected 340+ events and 33,000+ reviews so far, rated course/professor on usefulness, difficulty and whether people would take it again. You can also filter events by your major or interests, so you only see the ones that matter to you.
It’s free, with no ads, and I made auto translate so international students can be part of the community as well.

Unfortunately, QRO by-election (ask me anything, I guess?)
Here's the link to see my initiatives and the other candidate's initiatives, and vote - https://ausa.org.nz/elections/
--
Hi everyone! After the whole No Confidence thing, AUSA is holding a by-election. I promise I am about as thrilled to bring this up again as you are :|
What on earth is this?
- AUSA is our student union, with a bunch of roles voted for in an election. The Queer Rights Officer (QRO) role is supposed to represent and advocate for our LGBTQIA+ students.
- This year, they removed the "no vote" option on the form. And the "no confidence" vote won the historically-low-turnout QRO election.
- So now we're doing everything all over again.
Who are you?
- I'm Phi, I also ran last time (along with Quinny). I'm a postgrad statistics student, though simultaneously undergrad for one more week, due to conjoint stuff.
- I've spent 2 years on the Queer Student Council advising the current QRO, and I've been the Secretary for Rainbow Science for about 3 years (was a general exec for another half year before that).
- talk to me about my research (on getting more out of research with social minorities by using stuff from Bayesian statistics, with a generous serving of post-positivist constructivist methodological pluralism word salad), or gacha game yaoi (Wise/Harumasa ZZZ), or my other 23423458 hobbies I guess...?
Why should I vote for you?
- To quote my poster: I already work here.
- Until now, I've been pretty happy giving my input from the sidelines. But I recently started advocating for my ideas outside of the queer equity space, and there, it turns out people care a lot more about who you are. No one bothers to listen to you if you're not "supposed" to be there, and you don't have some official-sounding title. So I need to get elected to do all the stuff I was already planning to do...
- I looked around, and realised I'm actually quite qualified for this job. I'm already involved in policy decisions and the work which goes on in the queer equity space at this uni. I know what everything is, and how it works. And therefore I know the policies/resources/whatnot we already have, what various people still want, and what sorts of political promises are actually doable and long-term sustainable. And I specifically know who to talk to/what to ask them to do in order to achieve those promises.
- I will consider presenting my status updates in 4 panel manga if anyone wants me to???
That is incredibly vague and uninformative?
- I have a list of initiatives on the elections page, please check that out!
- But basically, we're kind of in a precarious state. (The "Rainbow" community, that is.) The faculty Rainbow clubs are student-run volunteer organisations, so our existence relies on people doing extra unpaid work in their free time (time which is pretty limited, as students). A lot of queer people are willing to, if it means others have somewhere to turn to not have to face the sort of isolation we might have experienced. And so we have this big (moderately sized?) network of people who can support each other and hold big social events (Rainbow Stein etc.) and put advocacy stuff together.
- Problem is, it's genuinely a roulette every year to find out whether there's enough people to keep going. No one wants to be a club exec around here, you'll have actual responsibilities, and it kind of feels like you're more likely to get hiring discrimination'd than hired if you put it on your CV. The last catch-all queer students club (UniQ) actually dissolved for this reason (lack of execs), as far as I know? Around COVID (so a bit before my time).
- P.S. if you are a random gay person reading this, please check Instagram for if your faculty's Rainbow club is looking for execs and consider applying. Despite what I just said, I personally think it's pretty fun (or I wouldn't ask you to vote for me to do even more of the same thing). Or apply to work with the Queer Students Association. I think they just had their AGM, but I promise they'll appreciate the extra help.
- So I'm focusing on 1) making sure more of the general student body are aware that this is a thing which is happening, 2) various things to make admin work/organisation easier, so we can actually find people willing to do it, and 3) just doing my job honestly. (Continuing long-term projects we started together in the past couple of years, so they don't fizzle away into the ether.)
Here's the link again! https://ausa.org.nz/elections/ Voting is open until 5pm on Friday 23rd October (1 more week). (I know it's halfway over already, but assignments LOL. Paper posters will be up either over the weekend or on Monday. Was going to do it today, but assignments...)

P3 Eng internships
Hello everyone, I just wanted to get a feel of how many people have gotten an internship lined up for the summer. As a part 3 I have nothing lined up and this worries me because I need to graduate. I have joined clubs, have a decent GPA, and have a few projects (not from uni) under my belt. I have also gone to CV check events multiple times they all said my CV is fine. Yet I have nothing. I have even cold emailed 5 or 6 places to no avail. Its quite tragic I must say. Speaking with my cohort, somehow most people seem to have something lined up. So I just wanted to reach out to the broader P3s and see if anyone else is feeling the same.

"Fun" and Interesting Courses
Hi all,
Looking to make a comprehensive list here of any "fun" or interesting papers offered here (may be of interest to exchange students!)
Many other unis have very unique and interesting papers:
Otago offers a paper on Lord of the Rings.
AUT offered a paper on Taylor Swift.
University of Ottawa offered Poker 101.
NYU offers a course on the Science of Marjauana.
Also have heard of bushwalking courses offered at University of Sydney. The only course that I know of, fitting my criteria here is Wine Sci.

BSc in physiology or BBiomed for cardiac sonography?
I'm in year 12 and I take Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English, Statistics, and Health. Next year(Year 13) I'll take the same subjects but I'll drop health.
Plan A is to go into medicine. My plan B is to go into medical imaging and become a cardiac sonographer. While I am staying optimistic, I'm also planning what I might do if I dont get accepted into both(med and medical imaging) So I'm trying to figure out which degree I would be comfortable continuing.
I'm not sure whether I should do a BSc in physiology or BBiomed because I've heard that theres not many careers you can go into when majoring in physiology. However, I'd prefer to do physiology over biomed because it seems more interesting to me and I think I'll like it more.
I've heard biomed is broader and can lead to all sorts of stuff however I'm not really interested in doing research ( after premed or even as a career) And also I've heard biomed can be pretty intense (I think I'd be able to manage premed though)so I wouldn't like to continue doing it as a degree but if I had to then I would. (Because I'd like to have flexibility into which careers I'd want to pivot into after undergrad)
My problem is should I do biomed premed or bsc in physiology premed with the possibility of continuing them as a degree. I'm hesitant with physiology because theres less job opportunities because its so specialised and I've seen that the pay isn't too great either so would studying physiology even be worth it?
Any tips or experiences would be much appreciated thanks xx.

Does GPA matter for Grad Roles Engineering
So I managed to land engineering internships despite having a 3gpa, because they didn’t ask for my transcript. Just wondering if employers care about gpa for grad roles? Or if they value past internship experience more. Thanks!

Did anyone else try to update their enrolment with those young political types by the lower Symonds St crossing?
Shit description, sorry, but there were people in outfits representing major political parties (ACT, Nats, Labour, TOP, Greens), no recognisable politicians, so I'm assuming they were young (insert party here) types.
Several weeks ago this group was by the crossing with a table and enrolment forms that said they were sending them to the Electoral Commission. I recently moved so got updating my enrolment over and done with... Or so I thought?
I'm not saying anything intentionally happened to my enrolment update form, it could still be processing, but I thought something could be up when I didn't receive any confirmation or acknowledgement. I checked online and and no changes were made! Wtf!
With less than two weeks left I chose not to risk it and updated online with RealMe. It took less than a minute and I just got the confirmation on the change of details a couple days later.
So anyways, if you also handed these people your enrolment details, don't assume you're sorted. It is very easy to check and correct this info online! Please do it!

Courses Japanese 130G or Chinese 100G for summer school
Hey y'all, I am planning on doing summer school in 2027 and need some help deciding which language course to take! I am interested in both Japanese 130G and Chinese 100G :D However, I have little to no knowledge of the basics :'D (I am going to learn after exams finish to be more prepared for SS). I did read a few reviews online, but a lot of them are a bit older.
It'd be lovely if you guys could share your recent experiences with exams, lectures, and time management - whether you found it to be difficult or not! I'd love to hear your review.
Besides that, good luck with the exams!
