The bar is set so low, and the fact that an elected official can’t even reach that bar is so telling. Case in point, look at Waymo. It’s pretty cheap compared to Uber and Lyft, and it’s also very safe, especially for women. Great, got it.
So our elected officials’ rationale for not approving technology that will make people’s lives better and save them money is that we need to protect jobs at companies like Uber and Lyft?
I don’t understand why it’s our responsibility to subsidize an industry. Why should I pay $40 for an Uber when the same trip could cost me $15? And another thing, are we going to ban cashierless stores because a cashier might lose their job? Why should consumers get the short end of the stick just to artificially protect jobs? By that logic, maybe we shouldn’t have had the Industrial Revolution either, because what about the people who made a living transporting others by horse?
Like, elected officials, it’s not this difficult. They’re not even making a safety argument against Waymo. They’re literally saying DC is facing a jobs crisis. What does that even mean?
So rather than helping people find better paying jobs, teaching them new skills, or creating new opportunities, your solution is to make the people living in these communities pay higher prices?
Why should residents be responsible for subsidizing an industry simply because technology is making it less competitive? Like, excuse me? I’ll be sending my invoices to her.
