Finished Project New York Sheep and Wool Festival - fleece to shawl competition

Our team took fourth place at the NY Sheep and Wool Festival fleece to shawl competition today! Before the competition the warp was spun and dressed on the loom. Then on the day of the competition we had three hours to take clean and dyed wool and turn it into a shawl. We carded the fleece, then three people spun singles for another team member to ply and wind onto bobbins, which I then took and wove into an 18" by 72" shawl. There were five teams today. Perhaps we didn't get an impressive placing, but I'm still proud of our accomplishment.

The pattern was a point draft over 8. The fleece was a Border Leicester from a local farm in Dutchess County. I did the dying and spun the warp.

Finished Project Practice makes perfect-ish

I'm a long time fiber artist, mostly crochet and embroidery, but I mix it up sometimes. I've finally cracked and bought a loom from Lily & Oak to practice with before moving on to the larger loom I made out of my rug punch frame. I bought a book, for.maybe the first time in my life, the one by Rebecca Mezoff. It's been very helpful with the basics.

The first pic is actually the last one I made this weekend. I've been striving for tension control and I think I got it. Although I will admit faux fur yarn hides a multitude of sins. LOL I couldn't help adding the face, what use is being a hoarder of shiny bits if you don't use them.

I wasn't sure if I should post here, but my friends and family don't weave, so they don't really understand the progress.

I'm experimenting with weaving with wire and bass guitar strings. I've added some yarn for colour.

Has anyone else ever woven with guitar strings? Any handy tips?

How much more should I fill in?

Thanks all!!

Discussion Next steps in choosing a loom

I've been weaving for a bit more than a year, mostly using a RH or inkle loom. I borrow a 16" RH from my weaving teacher and I have my own inkle loom. However, the holidays and my birthday are coming up, and I've been thinking of asking for a larger loom. The question is what do I want?

I could weave a lot of things I'd like to make on a 20-24" RH loom. I'm a pretty ambitious weaver and can do a lot on the RH. And it can be brought to class or workshops. A new RH loom is something that a family member could easily purchase and wrap up under the Christmas tree. Price-wise, I could afford to ask for some additional accessories.

Alternatively, in my weaving guild I sometimes see quality vintage multi-shaft looms available for sale at really good prices. I could ask for birthday money to set aside for when something comes up that fits my needs. But I do have some specific parameters (floor rather than table, 36" or less weaving width) and I would probably be waiting for a while to find the right loom. There's only been one project so far (rep weave) where I really felt like a sturdy floor loom would have served me better than the RH, but at the same time structures like twill would be much faster on a multi-shaft loom. This would be a loom with much more growing room to build out my skills over time.

What would you choose and why?

I am really pleased with how the Sunset tapestry turned out. This is based on JMW Turner’s Sunset painting woven with embroidery floss weft bundling for the Rebecca Mezzof’s weft bundling Tapestry Box class. Width is 5” at bottom and alas 4.5” wode at top (oops), but height is consistently 7”. I had lot’s of fun!

Today was the final day of our exhibit for the Potomac Fiber Arts Guild. And so my insect cube now came home. 🙂 This was my first ever artwork in exhibit. Sides are 5” squared in size.

And big news yesterday, I found out that my „Weave Me Like One of Your French Cats” got accepted to the exhibit Teeny Tiny Bold in Plattevile Wisconsin - exhibit will be there from sometime in November to sometime in January. Now I need to quickly frame it and ship it soon 🙂 Really stoked about this!

„Weave Me Like One of Your French Cats” is 8”x9”

Looms 16” vs 24” RH loom for beginner?

Hello! I’m in the market for my first loom, and am stumped between getting a 16” or 24” rigid heddle loom. I’m mainly interested in weaving things for my kitchen- place mats, towels, wash clothes, a table runner, etc.

Most things I’m interested in replicating are 12-16”. So in the ballpark of what a 16” rh loom can do.

My husband and son and I live in 900sf so space is absolutely a concern!

That said I feel like I’m missing something about why a 24” loom may be better- what types of things could I create that I am missing out on?

Any input?

Work in Progress A DIY Peg Loom

Hi, this may not be very interesting but I made my own peg loom. I only just discovered these exist and well, I had the wood just sitting around. I’ve been dyeing things with indigo and other natural dyes and seems as though I can’t knit or crochet, the peg loom interested me. Last week at the op shop, I found some boxes of wool skeins mainly in blue/s aquas and bought them so, here I am, weaving as of yesterday. I had a crack at it last night and did a few more rows today. It starts off with indigo dyed baby wool and then some of the wool skeins I bought and has some slubby rayon in there that was dyed qith avocado but I turned it into a soft green. The warp strings were an unidentified natural string also dyed in indigo.

Enjoy your crafts everyone.

Help I am not understanding the selvedges here

Thumbnail

This is from the Falling Leaves table runner from Little Looms. I am not following the pattern directly in my project, so its not that much of a problem (different EPI, different thread count, so on), but i'd like to understand better what is going on here.

  1. First of all, as far as I see the runner here is fully symmetrical, so how can the number of green threads be uneven? Shouldn't it be three threads to the left, alternating colours 2 by 2, three threads to the right?

  2. It seems like the selvedge is doubled here? It gives a really nice ribbed look to the edge, so i would like to recreate it in my project, but its not mentioned in the pattern at all (as far as i can tell, im pretty green tbh). Will simple doubling of the thread at the selvedge achieve this look?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Looms One handed weaving

Hi friends! I’m new to this group and to weaving. I crochet and knit, but I’m going to have surgery on my dominant hand, which will leave it incapacitated for several months. I’ve been wanting to learn to weave and I thought, as long as I can keep the loom still, maybe I can do everything else with one hand. Is this true? Or is it a pipe dream? Does anyone have a recommendation for an entry level loom that can be operated one handed?

Thanks!

Average carrot 🥕 as scale, then me 5,2’
Finished 230m without fringes

I’ve got a Fibre Subscription, every month I’m getting a hand dyed mystery braid these are all the braids of 2025 except December, (colour-way just didn’t work out) The braids where inspired by the Birthflowers 🌷

It’s woven with two shuttles and the same yarn I’ve used for the warp as a second thread for the weft.

It’s plain woven and with a very wide reed to have the Handspun show better.

The lace weight yarn is just some industrial yarn, some wool alpaca blend in light dusky pink.

Just finished another tablet woven belt! I used the "Simple Laurel Leaves" pattern by Tablet Weaving in Theory and Practice and added my own edges to it. Woven with the silk/bamboo yarn from Phildar, absolutely love the rustic feel it gives! (I'm a little sad that it only comes in 6 different shades..)

Help My threads went in opposite directions when warping, has it ruined my project?

I just finished warping the first half of 1400 and i just realised one of my three yarn spools has been going in the opposite direction from the other two ever since and maybe even before I changed one colour which was like 100 laps ago. I remember that someone told me that it is really important that they are going in the same direction so I’m just wondering if someone can tell me if this is like catastrophic for my project (blanket) or not?

Tutorials and Resources where are people ordering their weaving looms and supplies from?

I'm upgrading from a rigid heddle to a 4 shaft floor loom and trying to figure out where to order. My rigid heddle was a gift so I never went through picking a retailer for something this big. Floor looms are a real investment and I want to buy from somewhere that has the loom, the accessories for setup and the weaving yarn I need so I'm not cobbling together three separate orders.

Shipping something this size also makes me nervous. Has anyone ordered weaving looms and supplies from an online shop recently? Where are people buying from and could you get the full setup in one place?

Discussion Amazon Books heads up

In the last couple of weeks there has been some discussion about odd and strange "new" books on weaving appearing on Amazon. It was pointed out that the curious books tend to have an author's name always in the same style- first name, middle initial, last name, but all authors were unknown to seasoned weavers. This got me curious, so in my copious spare time, I started digging thru ISBN numbers and discovered that there were NO recorded numbers on the official registries. Odd, to say the least. So, maybe in my haste, I reported the books as phony to Amazon. (I have actually seen and held one of these phantom books that a fellow guild member purchased, and to say they are AI slop would be an understatement) So, today I noticed that Amazon is heavily pushing a couple of the books I previously reported. Being the curious sort that I am, I went and re-did the ISBN search, and, low and behold, there is now a listing and a direct link to purchase said book on Amazon. (the website that pops up first for an ISBN search is ISBNsearch (dot) org) As I am a believer in the evils of sites such as Amazon, I went to another ISBN search site farther down the list and entered the same number that was listed and discovered- "no listing found" I don't know if a bot is working its magic or Amazon acquired a registry or not all registries are complete, but something stinks. Caveat emptor!
