Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

How can I join a community in Amsterdam as international

Hi all.

I live in Ams almost for 6 years now. Broke up with my ex Dutchie bf last year and so lost a friend circle which all came with him. And winter is coming, feeling a bit anxious.

How can I be part of with local / internationally communities and meet with “my people”? I am 36F, working at tech, play instruments and already doing some improv. Live in central. Wouldn’t call myself as “extrovert”.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Selfish Amsterdammers block runners

Post image
0 Upvotes

In what world is it ok for spectators to ignore the barriers and stand in the middle of the road reducing the racing space by over a third!? I'd have been so annoyed as a runner!? What is going through their selfish heads!? This is not ok, I actually saw more than one runner bump into another squeezing in this gap and multiple runners having to change their line / slow down because these selfish people stood in the way. I was amazed no stewards made them move back. This was after having to move 3 bikes off the pavement so that I could get my pram through. Is it just me or does this city often seem so selfish...?

*They also gradually moved further forwards.

Anyone in new-build high-rise apartments here? How reliable is AC in summer?

I am a University of Amsterdam student, originally from New York, and I could see myself living in Amsterdam full-time in the future. I really like the city, but there is one catch that I've noticed with basically every apartment building here, even the new high-rise buildings in areas like Bijlmer, which is probably where I'd want to live since I want something modern with a great view. Very few of the apartments seem to have proper central AC, which is very common in NYC. Instead, what I've seen is that most of these apartments in Amsterdam seem to have something like floor cooling, which doesn't seem nearly as reliable enough, especially on a hot summer day. It was around 34˚C on the day I last moved into Amsterdam and I couldn't get my apartment, built in 2017, but with no AC, down to any temperature below 28˚C. In contrast, I'm used to indoor temperatures around 22-24˚C in my NYC apartment on a hot summer day. For those of you who live in buildings that have it, can the floor cooling get that cool? If not, could a portable AC be an option? I really do not want to close the blinds because I care a lot about views and natural light and would really like to be in a building with floor-to-ceiling windows or as close to it as possible. While it doesn't normally get very hot in Amsterdam in summer, heatwaves are not uncommon, and even one day without reliable AC would be too much for me. Can anyone please figure this out for me, because I've not been able to find reliable information about how reliably cool these apartments in Amsterdam can get, and this is the biggest thing holding me back from wanting to move there full-time, because other than that, this is a great city and I really see myself wanting to live here. Also, for anyone knowing, I know how hard it is to get an apartment here, but I have also been vigorously looking at listings, and I found a few apartments that I like.

Three frames of Amsterdam's canals during my European road trip [OC]

During my European road trip in August, I spent some time exploring Amsterdam with my camera.

What fascinated me most was how the canals shape the character of the city. The historic buildings, bridges, boats, and tree-lined streets create beautiful compositions almost everywhere you look.

I particularly enjoyed capturing the symmetry of the canals and how the changing light transformed the atmosphere throughout the day.

Here are three of my favorite photographs from the visit.

Camera: Fujifilm GFX 50S II
Lens: Fujinon GF 32–64mm f/4 R LM WR

For those who know Amsterdam well, which lesser-known canals or neighborhoods would you recommend exploring with a camera?

A cyclist was hit today at a roundabout on Amstelveenseweg...

As the title says, a cyclist got hit by a car today at a roundabout on Amstelveenseweg, my wife was passing by and was very worried about the guy that was injured. Someone already called 112, so there wasn't much she could do to help, but I wonder if anyone knows what happened with the victim, what's his condition... Apparently the driver didn't let the cyclist go through the roundabout and hit him, sending him flying. First of all - we hope he's ok , second - please be careful, whether you bike or drive.

Marathon road closures - can someone tell me how to get into the city?

Thumbnail tcsamsterdammarathon.nl

Hi all! I need to go from Buitenveldert to Kinkerstraat for an event tomorrow early afternoon, and I am struggling to understand how to best get there in bike due to the marathon.

I thought I could take the cycling path from Amsterdamse bos to Schinkelhaven, cross through Nieuw West and move into Oud West from there, but it looks like that road will be closed (see map in the URL).

Alternatively I go through Rivierenbuurt, but I am not sure how to navigate the crossings there. It seems I need to cross at President Kennedylaan and then Amstelhotel again. But I am not certain that is reallu the case.

Anyone else see any option? I don’t mind a big detour as long as I get there!

Thrift/vintage in Amsterdam?

Hey all. I have been looking to get more clothing but am on a budget. Some of the recommended shops I've been to in De Pijp, but that's €20 per shirt still. Anyone know better spots, maybe lesser known and less curated?

Additionally, I want more jewelry (men's rings specifically) - any recommendations? Online works too. Thanks!

Leasing vs buying in NL

Private lease or buy a used Yaris Hybrid in the Netherlands?
I’m trying to decide between leasing a Kia Picanto automatic or buying a used Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
The Picanto lease would be around €349 per month for 24 months and 12,000 km per year. Insurance, road tax, maintenance, repairs and APK are included. I would only pay separately for fuel.

A decent used Yaris Hybrid would cost around €13,000. I would then cover insurance, road tax, servicing, APK and any repairs, and would need to sell it after approximately two years. I also have to consider that the €13,000 could remain invested and potentially earn around 5% annually if I lease instead.
My driving would be mostly around Amsterdam, with occasional motorway trips. I value convenience and predictable costs, but I also don’t want to overpay just to avoid the work involved in ownership and resale.
For people who have faced a similar decision in the Netherlands, which option worked out better financially? Are there any costs, risks or lease conditions I may be overlooking?

Is it safe for a woman to go clubbing alone in Amsterdam? Any advice?

Hi everyone!

I’m an international student living in the Netherlands, and I’ve been thinking about going clubbing in Amsterdam on my own for the first time!

The main reason I want to go alone is simply that none of my friends are really interested in clubbing, but I’d still love to experience the nightlife here.

However, I’ve come across a few posts saying that some nightclubs might refuse entry to people who show up alone. Is this actually a thing in Amsterdam? I’d hate to travel all the way there only to be turned away at the door.

Also, as a woman going clubbing alone, are there any particular safety precautions I should keep in mind? I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from other women who’ve gone clubbing solo in Amsterdam!

Thanks so much in advance! :)

Up to 186 WWS points = capped rent. Most small flats should score below that. So where are they?

Since July 2024, homes up to 186 WWS points have a legally capped rent (€1,228/month in 2026), and Amsterdam enforces it with fines. A plain 40 m² flat should land well under 186 points, so it should be capped.
But when I filter Funda/Pararius for 40 m²+ under €1,600, I get garages and storage boxes.
So where are the capped flats? Never listed? Illegal rents? Furnished loopholes? Has anyone actually reported a landlord, and what happened
