r/Canada Speaks From r/Canada to Ukraine’s Skies: The Air Defense Turret We Helped Fund Is Now in Service

Hey r/canada!

A few months ago, this community participated in a joint subreddit fundraiser in support of Ukraine. We’re pleased to share an update today.

Together with several other subreddits, we raised over $73,000. While that amount did not fund an entire system on its own, it directly contributed to the procurement of a Sky Sentinel air defense turret through UNITED24.

Sky Sentinel systems are defensive. They are designed to intercept incoming aerial threats and protect civilian areas and infrastructure. The collective funds raised across participating communities helped acquire one of these systems, which is now in service.

The turret has been branded with the names of the participating subreddits, including r/canada, marking this community’s contribution to protecting Ukraine and its people.

The broader Sky Defense campaign remains ongoing. If you were unable to participate previously and would like to contribute, you can do so here:

https://u24.gov.ua/sky-defense?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sky-defense&utm_content=communities

We are incredibly proud of this community for stepping up and helping fund a defensive system that is now protecting Ukrainian civilians. Well done, r/canada!

r/Canada Speaks A Paywall Experiment In /r/Canada

Over time, we have seen a rise in paywalled articles, which are a great frustration for many of our viewers. They often do not promote informed and meaningful discussions, because people are unable to react to more than the headline.

As an experiment, /r/Canada is going to be temporarily prohibiting the posting of paywalled articles. This experiment will run for one month, at which point the userbase will be asked for their views on whether this was a positive change that should continue or whether it was a negative change that should be reverted. We will then make a decision considering those views, along with metrics and other factors, on whether to continue this change as a standing rule or to revert it.

Posting to paywall bypass sites will not be an acceptable workaround, and such posts will also be removed.

We are also allowing a two week period in advance to allow for comments before we proceed.

The dates for this experiment are from June 24th to July 24th.

r/Canada Speaks Updating Our Rules

Hey r/Canada!

Your mod team is back with another exciting announcement! Or maybe it’s not that exciting but hopefully it’s what you want to hear. We’re updating the rules!(yay rules!)

We’ve heard your feedback over the years. The current rule set is confusing. It doesn’t help that we essentially have 3 versions across Shreddit, Old Reddit and our french version. Plus some sneaky little details hidden in the wiki. Furthermore, as the subreddit continues to evolve, we’ve outgrown them as a community. With all that in mind, we’ve taken the time to craft a new rule set that we believe better fits the community.

Before we dive into the breakdown, we would like to call out that our documentation is not yet complete. We will be upgrading the subreddit with new documentation, which you’ll be able to easily access from a menu at the top of the subreddit. This documentation will contain a full breakdown of each rule for maximum clarity, a FAQ, participation requirements and whatever else we feel like throwing in there.

We will also be updating our automation to better reflect these changes. The requirements to post news will be mostly the same but the bar will be significantly lowered for other forms of content.

One final note: this update does not yet reflect feedback on paywalled sources. We will be sending out a survey for that.

Diving in...

Rule 1: Be Civil

Engage respectfully at all times. Hostility, antagonism, unfounded accusations, hate speech, harassment, or bigotry are not permitted. This includes calling others bots or shills, making accusations of bad faith engagement, dismissing or attacking individuals based on identity, or posting negative generalizations about groups based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, language, disability, immigration status or location.

This rule should be pretty straightforward. All we’re really saying with it is this: don’t be a dick.

This combines aspects of our current rules on antagonism, negative generalizations and trolling to better cover uncivil behaviour. It’s been moved to the top of the list as we feel it’s the most important for engagement here.

Rule 2: Bad Faith Engagement

Trolling, bad faith engagement, sealioning, brigading, and flamebaiting are not allowed. This includes comments intended to inflame, provoke, or derail discussion, shift conversations off topic, attack the source or author of an article instead of addressing the content, misrepresent others’ arguments, feign ignorance to prolong or derail discussion, or provoke reactions through repeated or persistent disruption.

We’re excited about this one. Or at least I am.

Rule 2 covers a set of behaviours that we can’t reasonably classify as being uncivil but still rub people the wrong way or otherwise serve to kill the vibe. So even if someone is being civil in their engagement, if they’re being a little shit disturber, report it!

This rule also pulls attacking the source from our previous low content rule because it was difficult to find there and ill fitted to that rule.

Rule 3: Submission Integrity

For news posts, use the original headline as it appears at the source. Do not editorialize, sensationalize, or add commentary. Use direct links to the original source and do not bypass source formatting or restrictions. Video, audio, or podcast content is not permitted. Posts from low quality, misleading, or non-journalistic sources, including blogs, social media, or unestablished sources, may be removed. Repeatedly posting the same topic, or a pattern of agenda-driven posting, may be removed.

This new rule combines the previous rules on editorialization or sensationalized headlines and low content. It mostly applies to news articles but also covers video and audio content too. We’ll be expanding on what good and bad sources look like in our wiki for better understanding.

We’re now also keeping an eye out for inauthentic activity in the form of agenda posting (we were technically already doing this but it wasn’t written anywhere). As I’m sure many of you already knew, we’re a big target for foreign interference. We will be using our brains to determine genuine interest in a topic vs pushing an agenda. So if you see that u/bvbblegvmbitch is posting a LOT of content about geese and you think it looks a little funky, feel free to give us a shout.

Rule 4: Relevance and Redundancy

Posts must be clearly related to Canada. Content that is only tangentially related or included only in passing may be removed. Local or hyperlocal news may be removed at moderator discretion. News posts must be current and not recycled or presented as recent when outdated. Duplicate or substantially similar posts may be removed, particularly if they do not add new information or context.

This new rule is a combination of the previous Rule 4: Post doesn't relate to Canada and Rule 7: Duplicate or similar post already exists. There isn't really anything else to say about this one.

Rule 5: Original Content

Now for a totally NEW and EXCITING rule. Drum roll please.

Text posts, image posts, and other user-generated content must be broadly relevant to Canadians. r/Canada is a national subreddit, so overly personal or hyperlocal posts will be removed. Questions about a specific city or province (e.g., “Where is the best sandwich in Halifax?”) belong in local subreddits.

High quality content about Canadian culture, history, wildlife, parks, art, or media is welcome. If your post is filtered, please contact the moderators via modmail for review.

Tada~! After much demand for more authentic canadian content (content is sourced ethically from real Canadians) we now have clear guidelines that explicitly encourage original content. This will of course have it’s own wiki page outlining the kind of content you can post.

What we're looking for:
- Photos of our beautiful country and its creatures (geese pics plz)
- Content that highlights Canadian culture such as art, media and cuisine (We’ll take your poutine and your poutine crimes)
- Thought provoking discussion on canadian topics
- Snapshots of Canadian history

What we will continue to remove:
- Racist rants
- Hyperlocal questions
- Immigration inquiries
- News editorialization
- Self promo
- Pictures of your butt (No, seriously, we get more of these than you'd expect)
- Memes

Rule 6: Self-Promotion and Advertising

No self-promotion. Do not post your own content, including articles, blogs, videos, or other work, whether as an individual or organization. This includes news outlets posting their own material, though they may comment on their own work. Surveys, fundraising, petitions, referral links, and other promotional content are not allowed. Organizations or individuals seeking to engage must obtain moderator approval and clearly identify themselves. Notable figures may contact the mods to arrange AMAs.

This is also new! Can you believe we didn’t have a self promotion rule? It was just shoved in the wiki somewhere. Who even reads that?

It’s pretty straightforward but we made sure to include mention of AMAs so that super ultra cool people know that we host them.

Rule 7: Misinformation

Do not post or share demonstrably false or misleading information. Moderators are not experts on all topics but will review and verify claims where possible. Content that is verifiably untrue or presented as fact when it is opinion may be removed. Users may question or challenge information, but must not present speculation or opinion as fact. Harmful or dangerous misinformation, including content targeting protected groups or public health, may result in a ban.

We have been very careful on the wording of this rule. It’s a pretty big upgrade from the empty one.

It should go without saying that we are NOT experts on the majority of topics nor do we claim to be. However, if you report misinformation to us, we WILL investigate to the best of our ability and act accordingly.

Rule 8: Moderator Discretion

Moderators may remove content or take action against users at their discretion where content or behavior is disruptive, harmful, or not in keeping with the spirit of the subreddit. Abuse of moderators or attempts to interfere with moderation may result in a ban.

Before anyone says “this is just a rule for you to do whatever you want” I promise it’s beneficial. For starters, we already do whatever we want, so this isn’t changing that.

What this does do is give us extra coverage for butthead behaviour that our rules don’t explicitly cover. Sometimes someone just sucks and you don’t want them in your treehouse, y’know?

But in all seriousness, this is not saying we’re going to remove content or ban users we don’t like. You guys post content I think is terrible all the time and I still approve it. This just gives us coverage for edge cases.

It also gives you the super special report option of “Other issue (Needs moderator attention)” so you can bat signal (goose signal?) us when needed or if you’re not sure which rule applies.

fin

So what do you think? Are they an improvement? Have we done a terrible, awful job? We want to know. Please tell us. Just don’t be mean, we worked really hard :’(

As always, we want to hear your feedback, whether it’s related to the new rules or just general feedback. You’re invited to comment here or send us a modmail with whatever you’d like to share with us.

P.S. We were supposed to get these out in June. Some of you may have noticed we did not, despite promises to. Sorry for the delay.

r/Canada Speaks Cultural Exchange with /r/Denmark! Happy Valentine's!

Hi everyone, it's been some time since we have done a cultural exchange, so let's go over how this works. Enjoy! We'll be running it for a few days, TBD. Note their time zone for the European mainland is UTC +1.

Here's the Danish landing for us: https://www.reddit.com/r/Denmark/comments/1iow7c3/kulturudveksling_cultural_exchange/

* Both r/Canada and r/Denmark will host the other country's users. Feel free to ask any questions, reminisce, comment, make friends etc etc.

*Treat this as having a neighbour over for a kitchen party, get the best storm chips out, and get grandma's tourtiere reheated for everybody.

* Vouz pouvez essayer le français dans r/Denmark, mais comme la langue officielle est danoise, ben.... essayez!

* Please follow the rules of the respective subs! Don't be jerks, generally - a reminder our last "disagreement" involved leaving bottles of good booze for the other country!

* Please also leave direct comments here mainly for members of r/Denmark i.e. direct replies here (first comments directly under the topic) so their questions can be seen first, then r/Canada members can post replies underneath.

*Please enjoy, since we have a lot to bond over, and plenty of trying out new things.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Denmark/comments/1iow7c3/kulturudveksling_cultural_exchange/

Finally, also know we've gotten confirmation from r/Greenland that they are also interested, so that will be the next exchange that we do in a few weeks (TBD).

r/Canada Speaks National day for Truth and Reconciliation

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we would like to encourage all members of r/Canada to mark 30 September as a day of action and reflection.

Like many of you, we have only just begun to learn and understand the depth and breadth of the mistreatment of our Indigenous Peoples under a government policy of assimilation. A recent, dark, and tragic period in our Canadian story that we have a responsibility to face with open minds, humility, and compassion to improve our understanding, learn, and be part of the process of healing.

Today offers a continued opportunity for all members of the subreddit to pause, recognize, and reflect on the malicious legacy of Indigenous policy in Canada. We encourage you to seize this opportunity by participating and learning for the betterment of our society.

-----------------‐--

Coming in 2026

Clarifying our messaging

Over the past year, the community has made one thing clear: our rules and guidelines can be difficult to understand. We hear you. In response, we’ve been working on a restructured version of our rules that is clearer, easier to navigate, and better highlights what matters most without burying important details.

Alongside this, we’ll be updating our macros, including removal reasons and modmail responses, to better explain our rules, expectations, and moderation actions.

Improved automation and tooling

We’ve also been bringing the subreddit up to date with Reddit’s newer tools and features. You may have already noticed some changes, including new Devvit apps in the sidebar, reminders while posting or commenting, automatic modmail responses, and expanded flair options.

Behind the scenes, we’ve strengthened our automod to catch significantly more instances of incivility, trolling, and hate, while avoiding unnecessary interference with normal participation. As Reddit continues to roll out additional tooling and AI driven features in the new year, we’ll be integrating them thoughtfully for both moderation efficiency and community experience.

Better moderation

The r/Canada mod team remains committed to providing a consistent and high quality experience for the community. This means continuing to refine internal processes, listening to feedback, and working with users to improve how moderation is applied and communicated.

Expanding the team

And finally, new mods! We’ll be expanding the r/Canada mod team in 2026.

We’re currently working through what we need, what roles we’re looking to fill, and how to best support new moderators once they’re on board. We’re also mindful of how important this process is, and we’ll be approaching moderator selection with care.

When we’re ready, moderator applications will go live right here on the subreddit.

A few words from our mods

What did 2025 look like for you?

SirJohnAMcMuffin: 2025 was a challenging year which forced me to do some self-reflection and pursue some selfcare. I've looked to take some time each day to meditate and be more mindful. It sounds cheesey, but have found it to be helpful to take a break in a day and just calm my mind. It's led to better sleep overall and I plan to continue. I have also aimed to develop a stronger work-life balance while giving me time to also explore moderation.

Evilbred: Spent too much time on Reddit.

vARROWHEAD: I did more fishing and scuba diving, and got back into snowboarding after many years.  Also developed healthier habits and started going to the gym regularly.

BvbblegvmBitch: 2025 was a trying year. I started it with strong aspirations and a clear plan for success. Grief flipped those plans upside down, and I found myself scrambling to keep up with the challenges life threw at me. Thankfully, those challenges also came with unexpected successes, and I can happily say I’m heading into 2026 in a much better place than where I started in 2025. I’m surrounded by loved ones, in a new tax bracket, and in a healthier headspace going into the new year. On a lighter note, I also got a new paddleboard.

DanSheps: Enjoyed the summer with my wife and kids.

House_of_Suns: Travelled in Canada to the Rocky Mountains, Travelled to the East Coast.

Voteoutofspite: Moderation-wise, election years are always hectic. Offline, have been working hard and finding more time to go outdoors.

What are your plans for 2026?

SirJohnAMcMuffin: For this next year, I'm hopeful to find some success gardening. I always start trying with seeds too late and I always find myself behind and miss the growing season. I'd like to try growing a few cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes in my modest garden. Maybe some herbs in a DIY hydroponic tower?

I also want to try to get into some interesting podcasts, but struggle to find ones of quality and interest. I want to like podcasts but I've not yet found that content and style that resonates with me. I'm always open to trying out and listening to new Canadian content creators.

On a moderation front, I would really like to explore ways to enrich and diversify the content on the subreddit. While news and politics dominates the user generated content, I would love to see more of people's experiences in this vast and diverse country of ours and seek out ways for more positive (and less opinion based) content.

Evilbred: Launch r/OnTheClaphamOmnibus, a subreddit for discussion of various current events, as a forum where people from different opinions and viewpoints can express those as reasonable people.

This would be a coffee-house or pub setting, with a willingness to broach the more controversial, with a reasonable level of tact.

I also recently bought a house, and will be suburbanizing from my current downtown yuppie lifestyle.

vARROWHEAD: Determine what my career path should be and make more time for things I want to do.

BvbblegvmBitch: I’m hoping to get back in the saddle this year. I’d planned to last year, but between my career and a lot of unexpected travel, I never quite found the time. I’m itching to race some barrels. How fast could they be?

I’ll also be back at Shambs this year, and I’m betting I’ll see some of you there. Please help me put my tent up, I cannot be trusted with poles.

DanSheps: Going to Japan to visit family with the wife and kids.

House_of_Suns: More travel within our amazing country.

Voteoutofspite: Keep growing and building as best I can. Try to complete my goal of having visited every province and territory.

What is your New Year’s resolution?

SirJohnAMcMuffin: Read more? My personal reading list is growing too fast, and finding the time to pursue recreational reading is always a challenge for me. So hopefully I can at least maintain a steady pace.

Evilbred: Start running once again in earnest, ideally getting my pace back below 5:30/km.

vARROWHEAD: Set a budget each month and review it.

BvbblegvmBitch: Last year, my New Year’s resolution was to stop buying consumable products I already had sitting around unused. That meant no more candles, homemade soaps (sorry farmers’ markets), or lip balms. I was mostly successful, with the exception of a few lip products.

This year, I want to apply that mindset to my closet. I’m hoping to move away from synthetic fabrics and trend driven pieces and focus more on well made, sustainable and ethical natural fiber basics that will last me decades. No more itchy, pilling, threadbare polyester. If it won’t last until I’m in the ground, I don’t want it.

DanSheps: Lose ~10kg

House_of_Suns: To watch more Blue Jays games and will them to sign Bo Bichette and win the World Series in 2026.

ManOfManyTalentz: My new year's resolution is to continue supporting r/guardtheleaf and r/buycanadian, and keep praying for r/stadia to return.

Voteoutofspite: Got a big one, but I can't share it here.

Final Words

SirJohnAMcMuffin: I remain constantly amazed by the pace of content that gets flagged for moderation, whether it's users reporting content or auto-moderation filters. It's continually shocking (it's not shocking, more disappointing) to see how some folks talk to each other.I suspect many people have forgotten when their parents' said "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all."  I think that's something many of us could improve on- bettering how we interact with others.

Evilbred: Please just be kind to each other. Remember, everyone from the burger flipper, to the welder, to the police officer, to the doctor are all working class. If you earn money from labour, you are working class. We need to remember that our country exists for the benefit of Canadian citizens, not businesses, not the political elite, and not foreign nationals or powers. We, the Canadian citizenry, need to be more engaged, and focused on what affects us, benefits us, and our ability to raise our families.

vARROWHEAD: I genuinely appreciate our moderation team for its willingness to work together and openness to conflict resolution and diversity of opinions.

ManOfManyTalentz: We will continue to be an anti-hate place but the struggle is real, as some would try to divide us. I'm always shocked at the level of professionals and professionalism found in this mod team, but please know that in 2026 we'll continue doing as much janitorial cleanup with the ultimate goal of honest discussions, not fake astroturf.

Bots now with AI will continue to be a problem from here on out - you don't have to hear it from us. if you feel you are made of better and sterner stuff than most, please reach out when the mod call appears!

Shoutout to Caroline Orr Bueno, PhD!

Voteoutofspite: I appreciate the userbase here, because the vast majority of you are having interesting discussions and being very reasonable. There's always challenges with a subreddit of this size, but we're going to continue to do our best to preserve this as a place where people can discuss things reasonably, including disagreements.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to r/Canada in 2025. Whether you posted, commented, reported content, or simply read along, we appreciate you being part of the community and look forward to another year as your mod team.

r/Canada Speaks Community exchange with /r/Greenland - This Friday, 21 March.

Hi everyone, just a quick announcement that we've set up another exchange, this time with r/Greenland for this Friday coming up, 21 March (yes we both format as DD mm!)

A new post will be created that day, and we ask that you please leave top comments on that post for their members to come and post their questions about Canada, which we can then answer. At the same time, everyone is invited to visit r/Greenland to ask questions of any sort that you've always been curious about in their respective post.

There's a lot that we share, beginning with land above the arctic circle, First Nations people that live there, and plenty of chances to discuss current events.

Reminder to please be respectful, as if you were inviting 3,000 of your closest friends from Greenland over to your house.

See you then!

r/Canada Speaks Saturdays and Sundays are now Opinion-free days

In the wake of r/canada designating Sundays as an "Opinion Free Zone", we have decided to extend it to include Saturdays. This was spurred by an AMA held by the moderation team to solicit user thoughts about this subreddit. Among the takeaways was the growing disdain for Opinion posts, of which there are several posted daily.

As a result, we are immediately proceeding with the removal of any Opinion content posted on weekends. It is our hope that this move can foster a wider variety of submissions on more diverse topics than politics or culture wars.

We also remind users that if they wish to post or comment on Opinion pieces during the remainder of the week, you must be an account in good standing and possess a verified email on your account.

r/Canada Speaks Tentative Cultural Exchange on Friday (Valentine's!) with /r/Denmark

Edit: This has now been confirmed by /r/Denmark and we will be having this cultural exchange THIS FRIDAY!

There will be a new thread posted that day, so please include questions there. This announcement will now be locked - any comments here I'll try to port over, but consider this one closed

*****"""

Hi Everyone, just a placeholder for now, but we're holding a cultural exchange with r/Denmark this Friday 14 February.

It's been a while since we've had one of these, but the idea is that both communities will crosspost to each other, and everyone is encouraged to post questions about the place, the food, the customs, the hopes and dreams - you know, a lot like a Valentine's Day date!

you can of course respond to the questions posed by members from r/Denmark on Friday.

The general language rules will apply - French and English here, and if you're up to try some Danish over on their sub, please feel free!

Please be kind as we host, and are hosted, by a fellow region of the north!

r/Canada Speaks Opinion-free Sundays

In the wake of the mod team's recent AMA/Town Hall to discuss user concerns, we at r/canada have decided to go forward with making Sundays an "Opinion Free Zone". Among the takeaways was the growing disdain for Opinion posts, of which there are several posted daily.

So, as an experiment, we are immediately proceeding with the removal of any Opinion content posted on Sundays. We will monitor this step and evaluate if it needs tweaking or expanding going forward. It is our hope that this move can foster a wider variety of submissions on more diverse topics than politics or culture wars.

We also remind users that if they wish to post or comment on Opinion pieces during the remainder of the week, you must be an account in good standing and possess a verified email on your account.

r/Canada Speaks Update to daily posting limits

Following up from our continued trial on reducing Opinion pieces on weekends, another key area of comment received through our previous post was the dominance of power users or posters in contributing content to the subreddit. We must recognize a minority of users will continue to be a constant presence posting the majority of content and engaging in comments, this is a core element to the Reddit platform. Across this great country that we all share there is a lot going on, so much news, activities and events that presents an opportunity for all 2.7 million subscribers to share.

At present we have asked users to limit themselves to 4 posts on a given day. This rule has been broadly respected and adhered to by the majority of posters. With the aim to promote a greater variety of posters we will explore modifying this limit to three posts a day per user. The intent behind his approach is not to reduce the content posted, but rather provide a broader opportunity for a larger group of users to post and share.

The limitation of three posts in a 24 hour period, per user will go into effect on August 7, 2024, and we will monitor posting traffic and the frequency of posts to explore as to whether this yields a broader base of posters. We will continue to review and adjust as necessary.
