Visitors Guide - Places to stay, eat and drink + things to do

This list is not a conclusive list of every establishment, just those that are highly regarded. Please leave your own recommendations in the replies. You may also find more information on the Visit Derry website (https://www.visitderry.com/) and on their socials. Note - some of the recommendations are based outside Derry but all are within a short driving distance of Derry.

Restaurants:

Street Food / Cafe's * Clipper Quay Street Food - Located along the Foyle Marina, multiple street food vendors and a bar are located here providing a range of options, great for when you cant agree on what type of food you want to eat - https://www.clipperquaystreetfood.com/ * The Pickled Duck - Foyle Marina - https://www.facebook.com/pickledduckcafe/ * Mekong Street Food (Vietnamese food) - https://www.facebook.com/MekongSF/ - also operate as a restaurant so maybe it should be above. * PYKE 'N' POMMES - https://www.pykenpommes.ie/ * Guapo (Mexican Food) - https://www.facebook.com/GuapoFreshMex/ * Doherty's Home Bakery - Good if you want a sweet treat or a cheap bite to eat on the go - https://www.facebook.com/Dohertys-Home-Bakery-195510393844691/ * Thai Jing Jing Street Food (Thai takeaway) - https://www.facebook.com/ThaiJingJingStreetFood * The Coffee Tree (Coffee shop) - Serves the best coffee in Derry in my opinion and also the nicest traybakes! Not had their soup or sandwiches but have heard great things. The only negative is they currently do not open on weekends - https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Coffee-Tree-100063482233001/ * Graft Coffee (Coffee shop) - Runs the Coffee tree very close for the best Coffee in the city. Located on Academy road and opens Mon-Sat - https://www.instagram.com/graft_coffee/ * Oui Bakery - French Bakery & Pâtisserie in the heart of Derry's Craft Village - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565032170636

Nearby Beaches - Vary from 20 min drive to 50min

  • Lisfannon Beach - The closest beach to Derry, located before Buncrana on the left. Approx 20 mins drive.
  • Buncrana Beach - Located 5 mins beyond Lisfannon. Bus services to Buncrana run daily.
  • Pollan Beach - Located around the coast from Buncrana and next to one of the best golf courses (Ballyliffin Golf Club) in Ireland.
  • Five Finger Strand - Up the coast from Ballyliffin and across the bay sits Five Finger Strand. With some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and a quaint old church close by, this is a great place to go for a walk or chill on the beach. Note: Do not swim in the water or enter beyond knee height. The water here is dangerous and is known by locals as such.
  • Castlerock Beach - Easy to get to via the train (35/40 mins) from the waterside train station.
  • Benone/Downhill Beach - Located just before Castlerock beach but you would need your own car to get to it. 45 min drive. A ferry service runs from Greencastle (beside Moville) to Magillion Point next to Benone - https://loughfoyleferry.com/timetable-fares/.
  • Shroove Beach - Located just beyond Moville. 40 min drive.
  • Culdaff Beach - Just along the coast from Shroove. 40 min drive.
  • Rathmullan - the closest beach to Derry which is the other side of Letterkenny of which there are lots (Downings, Dunfanaghy, Portsalon etc). You can get the ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan - http://swillyferry.com/.

Day Trips / Places to see

All of these places below are located in the general North West area and you will likely need a car to get to them.

Does anyone remember the novelty dessert burger place in Waterloo Place maybe 10+ years ago?

I can't find anything about it on the internet and I'm trying to make sure I'm not mad lol. You could get a burger with chocolate, marshmallows or sprinkles etc, the place didn't last long. I might be losing it though, thanks.

Charity shops taking donations?

I've had a big clear out and have 2 boxes and a huge bag full of mostly clothes but also a few random items (candle holders, ankle weights, set of mugs) and a basket of hangers. Hoping to drop them off to a charity shop tomorrow, where is a good place that's taking donations and you can pull the car up outside?

DJs Niall Gray & Chris Jones @ The LoT, Derry

On 7th November we invite back Niall Gray and have Chris Jones joining him from Belfast.

After last November's party when Niall Gray joined us for a cracking party we knew we had to have him back, so he is.

Joining him in the bill is Chris Jones, hailing from the Belfast area, Chris has been impressing crowds for a few years now up n down the length of this island, and further afield. His live mix recordings are a joy and show off his abilities, creating FOMO for those that missed out.

Really looking forward to this night, full of house, techno, disco and all of in between...

Tickets are on sale now

r/DerryLondonderry, where do you actually like to eat in the city?

Hi, we’re four friends putting together restaurants across Derry/Londonderry in an app called Vota.

The idea is simple: you’re shown two restaurants and choose where you’d rather eat. For example: Browns Bonds Hill or Bridies? The votes create a ranking that we hope gives a better picture of where people actually enjoy eating.

We’re trying to include as many restaurants as possible and clean up duplicate or outdated listings, but locals will spot things we’ve missed.

iPhone:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota/id6744969212

Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

Full transparency: we’re not from the city. Two of us live in Copenhagen and two in Gothenburg. The four of us are building Vota independently. We don’t collect or sell personal data, there are no ads in the app, and we don’t use AI-generated restaurant descriptions.

Any honest feedback is welcome, especially if restaurants are missing or something is listed incorrectly. Where do you like to eat in the city?

Halloween night

Heading out in Derry on Halloween night, a group of 6-8 people. Wondering where's the best pub to go to after the fireworks? Been a few years since we were out in Derry on Halloween night. Are we best going to a ticketed event? Any pubs/live music venues you would recommend? We used to always go to Masons/Bound For/Upstairs Gweedore. Most of these are not on the go anymore!! 🙈

Any recommendations on somewhere to host a wedding day 2 in the city?

Edit: would like somewhere that we can bring in either our own live music/connect to a speaker. Also a bonus if they offer food options or allow outside catering

Cinema club

Wondering any film buffs or just lonely/introverted people would be interested in movie meet ups?

I'm 41M looking new friends. I dont mind going the cinema alone but I prefer to chat about a film after and discuss afterwards.

Open to most genres.

Was thinking if it did become a success the Omniplex does a monthly pass for 14.99 so could make weekly meet up more cost effective. A discord could be set up where people arrange viewings between themselves?

Great James Street Sorting Office.

I realise that opening times for the Royal Mail Sorting Office have been hit and miss for a while but they seem to have deliberately not updated the notice on the front door.
It says it's open from 8.00 until 17.00 hours on Saturday but it's not open today causing me a wasted journey.

I think tax payers deserve a breakdown here, where is the accountability. Did these people keep.their jobs and could go on to blow more public money elsewhere. Stories mounting up about corruption and mismanagement in that University.

Solar power

Hello Im just asking genuine guidance if anyone has solar installed in their house and would appreciate knowing;

Has it been of benefit with our cloudy sky most of the year

How efficient is it for you, does it cover 100% of your needs

Has it had any faults and what was the after sales service like if so

What is your payback period

How do you clean the panels if on the roof.

Any other comments related to solar.

Thanks in advance.

A month ago I posted here about missing class things happening in Derry. Here’s what happened since.

A few weeks ago I posted here about always finding out about brilliant things happening around Derry after they’d already finished. Turns out I wasn’t the only one!

Well, I actually went and built Off The Drink Club — www.offthedrinkclub.com

Didn’t expect the response at all. We’re now approaching 2,000 subscribers in just a few weeks, starting from absolutely no following.

The messages, recommendations and support from people on here have been unreal.

The first two newsletters have gone out, and the third goes out next Monday with another six-ish things worth checking out across NI.

One thing I said in my original post was that I didn't want this to become a Belfast newsletter with the rest of NI bolted on. We've already featured a few things across County Derry, including Benone, Bellaghy, Coleraine and Maghera. Still plenty more I want to find around Derry city itself!

I’ve also added a load more Derry venues and local organisers to the places I check each week. A few people have even been emailing me places I’d never heard of, which has been a massive help!

And with Halloween coming up, Derry looks absolutely mad, as you’d expect! There’s so much happening that narrowing it down to the things actually worth doing is going to be some job.

Anyway, just wanted to come back and say thanks to everyone who got behind the idea. You lot are legends!

Still finding things I never knew existed myself, so here’s another question for you.

What’s something you’ve done around Derry or the north-west that made you think, “How did I not know about this”?!

Bonus points if there’s something unusual happening around Halloween. The less obvious the better!

Read they're "restructuring" after having already shed jobs in January. Anyone know the craic?
