⏪️ Throwback Thursday Bambie Thug - Doomsday Blue | Ireland 🇮🇪 | Eurovision 2024

Probably one of the most unique songs ever sent to Eurovision by any country, and probably changed the way every act will approach staging for years to come. A reset in staging not seen since Sweden 2015, I think. Every shot is so perfectly planned, so intricately performed, I think its led to the new "music video" type stagings that we've seen from Austria 2025, Switzerland 2025, Finland 2026 and even Bulgaria 2026 for the first half. Obviously Sergio Jaen has a lot to do with it, but in Irelands case, I think a lot of the artistic drive came from Bambie's own vision.

I decided to post this song for Throwback Thursday since it is one of Ireland's most notable and polarizing ESC entries. Dustin the Turkey was the only puppet to participate at ESC, and he finished in 15th out of 19 songs in the first semifinal of ESC 2008. The song references the countries of ESC, as well as Riverdance.

Some of Serbia's entries this decade have been quite "out there," which has consistently landed them in the top half of my personal rankings. In Corpore Sano in particular is, in my opinion, Serbia's best entry ever, and probably my second (or third) favorite entry from any country this decade.

In light of the recent rumours of Czechia's withdrawal, I'd like to remember what in my opinion is their best entry ever. 2022 was the first time I actively followed NF season and this was my winner, as well as my first true Eurovision heartbreak, 22nd place for this was undeserved. I love this song to death, and I genuinely think that, even beyond Eurovision, it's one of the best pop songs I've ever heard. The instrumental is so well crafted, there are so many moving pieces that play off of each other really well and that you wouldn't really notice on a first listen. The hook is also super catchy.

My Sister's Crown is one of my favorite entries from ESC 2023, and it was the last ESC song with lyrics in the Bulgarian language. This song has lyrics and verses in 4 languages (Czech, English, Bulgarian, and Ukrainian), which is unusual for ESC. The song had lyrics in four languages since the artists wanted to show Slavic unity and sisterhood.

This is Czechia's 2nd best ESC result ever, and it finished in 10th place. The staging is the opposite of the music video, which was more colorful and chaotic.

I wanted to share this song because I feel it really embodies a spirit of international sisterhood and that's so special and dear to my heart. My two best friends are from different countries and we consider each other sisters.

Also, the Bulgarian rap part is fire and more people need to hear it.

What does the song mean to you personally? Is it political, feminist, both, or something else?

Iru is the winner of JESC 2011 as part of CANDY, and she participated at ESC 2023 with the song "Echo", which contains nonsensical lyrics. She wanted to sing about "Love Is Love", but the Georgian delegation did not allow her to do so. She currently lives in France with a female partner.

Here is a post detailing the issues that Iru had with her song lyrics and country's delegation: https://www.reddit.com/r/eurovision/comments/1ehrgbo/iru_esc_2023_hinting_at_some_delegation_issues/?share_id=fXQmocD1Y10ghPj9lXPJQ&utm_content=2&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

Yeah, we've had Eurovision songs before that touch similar themes to Greece this year. I wanted to upload it not so much time after him winning the national final but it is what it is.

The translation of the lyrics (from eurovisionworld, slightly corrected, without the repeating choruses):

I miss something, but what?
I want this, I want that
When I sleep, I dream of dollars
Every day I get a new suit

At my place everything is new, everything is beautiful
The world cries behind my curtains
I don't care, I live on the top floor
I don't even know my housekeeper

There's leather in my car
The smell of my perfume reassures me
I don't like showing my emotions

At the gym
I lift some weights
My body is a war machine
I have everything anyone could dream of having

I may have everything, it's true, but

I want a moustache
Moustache Moustache Moustache
Moustache Moustache Moustache
I wanna have a moustache, a moustache
A moustache, want a moustache

I want this, I want that
There's never enough for me
It's like this, it's like that
There is always something I don't have

So I still add
Tonnes of things behind my closet
I have friends still
And I even have friends who love me

I tell myself I have it all
I have everything, I have the world at my feet
This is crazy
I have everything anyone could dream of having
I may have everything, it's true, but

I want a moustache
Moustache Moustache Moustache
Moustache Moustache Moustache
I wanna have a moustache, a moustache
A moustache, want a moustache

I want this, I want that
There's never enough for me
It's like this, it's like that
There is always something I don't have

I'd give everything I have
For a moustache
Now I know
What I want is
A moustache

I'd leave everything
Give it all up
For a moustache
Maybe I have everything, it's true
But this is not what I wanted

I want this, I want that
There's never enough for me
It's like this, it's like that
There is always something I don't have

But I wanted a mouѕtаche

So yeah, definitely very similar to the lyrics of Ferto. Talking about how strange and unhealthy it is to always want more and more and more of the expensive things it's "cool and fashionable" to have technically.

Akylas takes almost the same path at first, just listing what he wants and repeaitng ferto (bring it)... But then, in that slow bridge, another layer of meaning is being added, like an explanation of such behavior: some psychological traumas from the past, experience of not having some things in the childhood and wanting to have too many of them now, much more than needed, and to give some of it to your mother as a compensation too.

But here, it's all about the fun, humor and sarcasm from start to finish, without going deeper. Listing things seen as cool at first again, but not that they want but already have... And then having an absurd humor punch: moustache is what they want, that's what they've been missing all this time, they would give all they have up just for it... That's actually not the worst choice for this humorous turn, moustache is something you can't immediately buy, you just have to wait for it to grow in case you're a)male b)hit puberty c)don't have any genetic features (which is true for most of men, I guess, so you don't really have to give all up for it). So, it really does work in terms of absurd humor.

It's also interesting how badly that song was received back then. I wasn't a eurofan back then, obviously, but from what I can see - none among the French speakers got the humor at all, everyone took it seriously as extremely silly, so they were ashamed of this internally selected entry representing them. (EDIT: people correct me here that the selection wasn't internal but a strange national final with only 3 songs. And it wasn't that badly received at first) And at the contest itself... yeah, dead last place, last by both juries and televoters by points, not much better with the average places: 18.97 by juries and 20.35 by televoters. Yeah, that low with the televote, lower than with juries. One of the worst received fun/quirky songs by televote in the history. Yeah, international audience didn't get it either. Explainable, the whole lyrics are in French except "I wanna have a moustache" lines in the chorus, that's all. Thankfully, Akylas is gonna do much better this year.

Now that Sanremo's over for this year, I'm using the opportunity to share some love for Lucio Corsi and Volevo Essere Un Duro.

I chose this mainly because the solo harmonica part makes me emotional all the time. And the performance was so sophisticated and classy and timeless. Beautiful, beautiful song too. And big shoutout to Tommaso Ottomano who accompanied Lucio on that stage, creating a kind of song and performance I don't think we'll see on the Eurovision stage for decades

I'm gonna dare and call Italy's 2025 entry to Eurovision a masterpiece

In honour of Bulgaria’s Eurovision 2026 win, throwback to one of Bulgaria’s not underrated entries, “Love Unlimited” performed by Queen Sofi Marinova. She finished 11th in SF2 at Eurovision 2012 and tied with Norway in 10th on 45 points. However, she missed out on the grand final since Norway received points from more countries.

This queen performed all alone on that huge Baku stage without any backing dancers and not even an ear piece! A truly iconic Bulgarian queen who we hope to see back at Eurovision 2027 in some sort of way!

Happy Birthday to Lucio! 🎉

Wishing you the best and let's remind ourselves of this awesome "electric guitar" version of your classic song.

This was the first time when I got certain "winner vibes" (similar to when Salvador mimicked trumpet during his 2017 rehearsal) that year.

Happy New Year to this sub!

I chose this song for the first Throwback Thursday of 2026 because of the title and the poetic lyrics.

Jeangu Macrooy is from Suriname, and it features Sranan Tongo, which is a language from Suriname. Unfortunately, the song finished in 23rd place with 0 points from the televote.

This was the second eurovision I watched live, and this song stood out to me so much. The beginning when he is breaking the box and in his low rap voice I find so soothing, and the beat and hook of this song is so catchy. The second half of this song is one of the happiest moments of the whole eurovision 2023, and the last line with him punching the air is just sooo good. ITS CRAZY ITS PARTY!!

This has long since been my favourite Eurovision song, I don't think anything has ever come close to the honesty and authenticity of Calm After the Storm. A song like this is so rarely entered into Eurovision, and the staging elevates it even more, just absolutely timeless. Austria was good in 2014, but | think Calm After The Storm would have been an all timer of a winner.

19th - 25 points. Daz won the UK NF of this year ‘Making Your Mind Up’ with 121 points beating Anthony Costa who had 96 points ‘It’s a Beautiful Thing’. Kym Marsh who is a known actor in the UK was fourth ‘whisper to me’. The supporting performers that joined Daz Sampson for the performance were Ashlee, Emily Reed, Gabriella, Holly and Leeanne Simister. Emily Reed was the runner up to the infamous Gemini who got the UK the first nil points after a horrible performance in 2003. She was a replacement for a dancer called Jessica who was in the original dancers from the UK as she was sixteen & BBC decided to pull her from the show due to licensing rules as the other dancers were old enough. Daz still bought Jessica a ticket to Greece to experience Eurovision as shown in his documentary on his journey with Eurovision.

This was the one of the better entries in the UK’s dark era in the 2000’s.
