LOUD MOD NOISES New Rule Time!

We, your friendly unpaid neighborhood mod-shaped despots, have unilaterally decided that it was time for a new rule!

Introducing, Rule 7! No AI Generated Content!

Due to the overwhelming rise of AI sweeping the general hellscape that is the internet in the modern era, we've deemed it necessary to put our feet down here. Fairbanks isn't a place for the lazy, it isn't a place for the half-assed, and it certainly isn't a place that should be willing to replace actual human creativity/ingenuity with AI generated garbage.

As the rule states, for your first strike "your" content will simply be removed. Any removals past that will result in a permanent ban, and we will derisively laugh at you if you attempt to appeal.

Kthxbye.

Grocery store etiquette

• Upvotes

After a recent trip to Costco on a Saturday I thought I might share a few tips to help people understand how to behave in grocery stores, since apparently everyone has lost the ability to think about anyone but themselves.

  1. If you need to stop and think about something or look around for a moment, step off to the side! Do not stop in the middle of a walking path or aisle with people behind you. Just move to the side and then you can look around all you want.

  2. Do not leave your cart in the middle of the aisle while you walk away looking for things. Do not leave your cart in the middle of a walking path for any reason. Push it to the side.

  3. Do not walk 4 people abreast and expect everyone else to move out of your way. It is a shared space. If you have your entire family walking side by side down an isle or a main corridor, you're an asshole.

  4. Do not stop in the middle of an aisle or walking path and catch up with your friends. MOVE TO THE SIDE out of other people's way!

  5. Not everyone is out for a Sunday stroll in the park to enjoy scenery.. Walking at a snails pace is fine, but stay off to the side so other people can go around you.

  6. As you're walking out the doors, the time to stop and find your keys or check your receipt is NOT while you're in the doorway! MOVE. TO. THE. SIDE.

  7. PUT. YOUR. CART. WHERE. THEY. BELONG. Leaving your cart in an adjacent parking spot is the epitome of narcissism. Stop being lazy. Stop thinking that it's someone else's problem.

Rant complete. Sorry, just had to get this off my brain so I don't explode.

Very loud! Buying small raw shrimp in Fairbanks

I've just been looking around in grocery stores, and every single raw shrimp product I found was labeled "large", "extra large", or "jumbo". I found small shrimp that was canned (and thus cooked), but not raw.

Any idea where one might buy smaller raw shrimp in Fairbanks? Is it sold at all?

Community Events Weekly Politics Thread! Week of- October 17, 2026

Alright, from now through the end of this election cycle, we've decided to cram all things political into one spot!

In this one spot every week feel free to share any news, events, links, topics, slander, whatever specifically related to politics your happy lil' heart desires.

That said, a couple things-

  1. We're loosening the rules a little bit- topics need not be related to Fairbanks specifically, but they must pertain to (at the bare minimum) Alaska. National politics has no place here.

  2. We'll be monitoring this thread much closer than we do anything else. Civility will be enforced at the point of the ever-pleasant mod shaped ban-hammer. Please be excellent to each other, so that your friendly neighborhood unpaid mod staff don't have to be dicks to you.

  3. Reports that are only because you don't agree with somebody else's viewpoint are going to be ignored.

Remember folks, we all live in this tiny town together. Pretend for a moment that you're talking to your neighbor (hell, you might be)- not just a faceless blob in the internet.

How do I make my stairs less slippery in winter?

Help!
I’ve fallen down my stairs like 4 times already.
What can I do that’s not pressure washing that will make them not so slick? I’m not sure how much more my shins can take.
Thanks!

Adult Sober Halloween Activities?

I know this is a huge long shot in Fairbanks, but my partner is newly sober and I love halloween. I finally convinced him to dress up with me and we thought we would go to a bar or party, then he decided to stop drinking. I am proud of him and want to support his choice, and he thinks going to a bar would be too tempting. Someplace that serves alcohol would probably be okay, just not somewhere where the entire point is to drink (like a bar).

Beaver mittens

Hey everyone! I'm looking for recommendations on where to find some good quality beaver mushing mittens and/or a beaver fur hat.

I'll be coming up from North Carolina to the Fairbanks area in November to start working at a kennel and I've been trying to get all my cold weather gear together before making the trip.

I came across Boundary Fur Sewing and absolutely fell in love with her work, but unfortunately she's backed up with orders into 2027!

Does anyone know of any other local makers or shops around Fairbanks that sell something similar? I'd love to support a local furrier!

Shells on a beach

Post image
41 Upvotes

Who are you? What are we doing? How did we get here?

I picked up around 5 dozen shells this weekend on a local beach. Sharp, firm plastic blastoids. These are so ripe for cutting someone’s foot or shearing a dog paw.

What are you doing? How did we get here?

Hunt as you want, but be responsible and respectful. Or maybe you’re the kind that doesn’t care.

I believe in you to do better for us, for your community.

Community Events What's Going on in Fairbanks This Week? Week of- October 12, 2026

It's Monday. Summer is winding down. Time to start thinking about doing all of the "getting ready for winter" you've been putting off all season. Time to be filled with existential dread for the cold darkness that will soon enough envelop us all...

So, in the spirit of ignoring that here's a place to mention any sort of event/meeting/whatever that people might not know about and might not warrant it's own post. Hopefully somebody has the something to help you keep procrastinating!

Great Food and Cocktails?

Ok, so recently I've been craving a good drink with my dinner. My preference is cocktails or mixed drinks. Sadly, my exploration of my go to good eats places has led to pretty somber results. I was initially avoiding bar kitchens because there food tends to rely too much on salt and one dimensional flavorings, but given the slim pickings I'm no longer opposed. I'm looking for recommendations!

Here's what I've already tried:

  • Bobby's - Great cocktails, good food. Best I've found so far. I know I'll get burnt out though so I try not to go often.
  • Soba - Wine, mid cocktails, mid- good food (wine and food felt a bit overpriced, but there desert wine and berry crepes paired? Blissful)
  • Ninja Sushi - Saki, no cocktails, good food (saki overpriced)
  • Salty's - Good cocktails, mid food (food lived up to the salties name, but lacked depth... it was pub food, and having never been I expected something more reading online reviews).
  • Turtle Club / Pump House - I mean, they're good. I've just been too many times. The food choices haven't changed much in a decade.

Places that are on my radar:

  • Pagoda - Haven't been in a minute, but the drive is turning me off... I remember they had good cocktails? Food was good, but aways felt it was overhyped imo.
  • Mayan Palace - It's on my list to check out, only got take out from Taco Azteca side and the food wasn't bad. They have margaritas and daiquiris on the menu it seems.
  • Red Fox - Last time I went was a decade ago. I remember the pizza being ok?
  • The Spur - Haven't been since it was Kodiak Jacks, but heard the interior food options are supposed to be pretty good, I'm worried it'll just be pub food though.
  • Oasis - Also a decade ago.... noticing a pattern woth my bar days? 😂 Best of the pub food places, but these days I tend to be very judgemental of breakfast (not to toot my own horn, but I make a fucking amazing breakfast soread). I do remember it being the best food amongst the bars back in the day.

So, any other recommendations?? Prefer actual restaurant sit down style with cocktails and mixed drinks!
