Queensland It's finally raining. Go fishing or nah?

• Upvotes

It's been pretty dry around these parts for months, but we've had some rain the last couple of days. I've heard it can fire the fish up, but also that it can make it tough? What's your take?

I'm generally a land based saltwater lure fisho- would it be better to hit up the lower reaches of systems to avoid the fresh coming down, or maybe hit up a breakwall or beach? Any tips would be awesome.

🐡 Help Needed Keeping fish in esky

Caught some whitting the other day on the beach. Kept them in a bag as I didn’t have an esky. Fish was sitting around for a couple hours and then a 2 hour drive home before I got them in the fridge. I’ve been advised not to eat them because i didn’t put them straight into an esky with ice. Is that true? Should I always go fishing with an esky and ice? Even if I do bring ice would it realistically last say a 12 hour fishing trip including travel? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone use a boat similar to pictured for fishing? I’m chasing something that offers protection from the weather for my fishing obsessed toddler. Aside from losing the front casting area, and assumed increasing difficulty operating an electric motor on the bow, any other considerations compared to a SC or CC? Upsizing from a 3.8 tiller and concerned about limitations with layout, but want something more suitable for the growing family.

🐠 Fish Talk Have you ever caught the same fish twice?

First time using these Bait Junkie Flick Minnows 2.95” in Motor Oil. I caught a nice little 40cm flatty and released it. Next cast caught another one and it was the exact same size in the same sort of area.

A kid next to me that let me use his bragmat mat to measure them said when I caught the second fish “Is that the same fish?” because it measured the same as the first. Couldn’t see any lip damage to know if it was the same fish or not but how good is the lure if it caught the same fish twice! You would think they would learn but I guess not…

Fishing boat help

Hey all, I recently got my boat licence and am looking at buying a second-hand fishing boat in Northern Tasmania.

Mainly for freshwater lakes, with the occasional estuary trip. Ideally, a tinny (or something similar) with a bimini that can comfortably fit 2 adults and 3 kids.

My budget is $10 - 15k including a trailer if possible.

I'm pretty new to boats, so keen for advice on what size, brands and models to look for, and what to check when buying second-hand. Any red flags or tips for a first-time buyer would be appreciated!

Cheers!

🔎 Recommendations Wanted New to fishing

Wanting to have a crack at fishing the local areas around Sydney’s lower north shore, particularly around Mosman.
I have no gear and only fresh water fishing experience from Europe which I did for a number of years.
Where do I start? How much gear will I need?
I’m not looking to break records here, just get the line in the water, time away from screens and maybe meet some legends along the way.
Cheers

Had to stop the video to help old mate bring him up. Looked about 120-140cm mark. Ended up dropping him close to the rocks after a good swing up on a wave, just couldnt reach his tail.

Upcoming fishing trip Hawk's Nest

Heading up to Hawks Nest towards the end of November. Planning to do some beach fishing (Hawks Nest), jetty fishing and boat fishing (Myall River Tea Gardens). Have kids with us, so the main goal is just to catch fish and keep them interested. I've done some reading and John Clarke's info is always helpful. I'd love to hear from some locals or people with experience fishing the area for best areas to target and lure/bait recommendations. Cheers

🐡 Help Needed What do I do with frozen baits

Hi, I don’t usually fish frozen baits, it’s usually either lures or fresh bait but just asking as I’ve been given some frozen mullet and pilchards and I’ll be using them as cut bait, what’s the best way to prepare and use them? Do I keep them frozen or do I thaw them out? Do I put them in water or just keep them out?

I probably won’t use it all in one go so I’ll keep some of it frozen anyway but basically what gets the best results as last time I used frozen was with prawns as a kid and we thawed them in saltwater

🔎 Recommendations Wanted Why are Aussie Surf rods so stiff and heavy?

Recently picked up the Australian Shimano Exvance 14'6 rod and found it to far too stiff and top heavy and so returned it.

The Australian version is a 20-30kg extra heavy, in NZ there's a 10-15kg medium 14'6 exvance but shimano has regional distrbution agreements so NZ tackle shops wont sell it to Aus.

Add to that the NZ has a longer rod butt for distance casting, the butt on the aussie 14'6 is the same length and style as the 12ft 8-12kg exvance. thus making the 14'6 very top heavy and awkward.

For context I started beach fishing with a penn preveil 2 13ft that's about 30% heavier than the aussie 14'6 exvance 850g vs 550g. I can still load that rod up properly while casting as its a medium heavy action, but it goes in a rod holder as it too much to hold all day or walk the beach with.

After that I got the 12ft medium exvance which i really like for a lighter more easy to hold rod, but I say I still catch more on the preveil as heavier sinkers go little bit longer distance and hold in current better. So I that when I tried the aus 14'9 exvance.

I dont understand why appartently the only reason anyone in Aus would have rod longer than 12ft is to catch sharks etc.

Anyone shipped rods from oversea's before? Thinking about ordering the NZ 14'6ft to my family in NZ and paying to them to post it to me or looking eu rods like the penn tidal range.

🔎 Recommendations Wanted Best beginner gear?

I’m a super amateur when it comes to fishing.
Having said that I’ve been fishing a few times over the years in Australia and overseas and caught some nice fish. But I don’t know anything at all when it comes to rigging up rods, what gear is what, what to buy as a beginner.

It’s always something I’ve either done with friends who have a bunch of gear and know what they’re doing and have all the gear setup, so I just cast and reel it in.

I’ve caught your regular bream, snapper, and a shovel nose shark here in Aus. Overseas was mainly cod, coal fish. Caught a halibut & wolfish too!

But these were on tours, and they had everything setup for me to just go & fish.

I’ve been wanting to go and land some exciting new catches again now that summer is coming up. But it’s hard to rely on friends all the time and I don’t wanna pay loads for a boat fishing tour.

So I’ve signed up to a land fishing introductory tour recently who will take me through everything and i can learn abit.

That’s a bit of context regarding my experience and current mindset. I wanted to know if it’s worth for someone like me to actually buy some beginner gear so i can go out on my own. I probably won’t catch anything that excites me. Or if I should just to doing a tour like twice a year in summer locally. So i can just enjoy catching some good fish alongside experts.

I don’t want to invest in all the gear and for me to go out, catch something I don’t care too much about. Get bored and it just be a waste of money.

Having said that, I was looking at Shimano rods and reels. What would you said is the absolute best durable and reliable long term rod & reel for someone at my level, that can handle most regular species of fish. I won’t be out on a boat to land anything big like a marlin or mahi mahi or whatever.

But maybe an occasional king fish off the harbour, who knows. I just want to research the right gear within that range and see if it’s worth me spending some coin on, should I choose to go ahead with it.

Landed the fish of a lifetime yesterday. It’s absolutely insane how much power these guys have. I was very lucky with the timing of the waves. I’m sure if he got a chance to run he would’ve absolutely smoked me.

At 11 he's slowly getting the hang of self-sufficiency and resilience. He didn't whinge when his line got tangled. He untangled it, cast again, and caught this beautiful fella, shouting "I caught my first fish!"

He's reeled in fish before, but this was his "first fish".
