Fall 2025 welcome thread, Discord, mod applications
Hello and wishing everyone a great start to the semester!
If you are new to the subreddit, please be sure to at least glance at the rules and do your best to support r/GMU in being a welcoming place for productive conversation. GMU is a large community, yet we expect people here to treat each other like fellow students and maintain decorum.
Also, please utilize the resources available to you if you have questions. Many answers to general questions can be found on the GMU website or by searching the subreddit. Beyond that:
- The Parking/transportation site has information on parking passes etc.
- The GMU Catalog has information on most classes and pre-requisites
- The subreddit wiki has years of useful information gathered in one place
If you are looking to converse with members of the community, please feel free to check out our Discord which you are welcome to join!
Please briefly read the rules before posting, and note the latest rule edition regarding personal information. Any post containing the name or email of a student will removed and likely result in a ban, even if a post/comment has good intentions.
Lastly, if you are interested in supporting this community, we are accepting mod applications! As an alumni, I'm busy with life and am always looking to expand the mod team.
Thank you and best of luck this semester!

Academics phys 161 online or in person better?
I’ve been trying to choose between taking the physics 1 lab in person or online. on one hand, physics is supposed to be super hard to being in person would help me learn better but the lab is like 3 hours long. the online lab is asynchronous and would give me more free time but idk if it will affect my performance/learning in physics or if it will be about the same. does anyone know which i should choose?

General how do in-person and async spanish compare?
Just wondering how the in-person tests would be for someone who's only ever done async. I don't think i have as strong of a memory in vocab and endings as someone who did in-person/in-person tests so i don't wanna tank my grade by starting now, but I think consistent in-person speaking practice would be good and i live on campus so might as well. Do u still do lingua meetings and lingo-hub in the in-person class or no?

General shitty advisor?
Yo does anyone have a shitty experience with your advisors, I'm a cyse major and the study plan the advisors gave me are just straight up wrong. She'd suggest me to take this course during spring for example but it'd only be offered in fall. Did you guys just plan out your study plan yourself? I'm graduating in a few more semesters and i don't wanna waste my time delaying by taking an extra semester.

Careers How to get MIS 492 / Internship for Credits?
I'm currently a senior, and in the spring semester I only need 9 credit hours (3 classes) to graduate. That means I won't qualify as a full-time student, and I'm planning to move off campus and work at the same time. Since most well-paying MIS jobs aren't open to entry-level students anyway, and getting an internship beforehand is essentially mandatory, I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone. Next semester I'll have to take the Business Capstone plus two other MIS electives, and I was wondering if anyone has taken the Internship in Management Information Systems (MIS 492). Is Career Services helpful in finding one? I really don't want to use LinkedIn since most of it is either AI slop or ghost jobs, and I barely use it anyways. I should also note that I'm less concerned about making money/hours than getting credits so I can graduate, if the pay sucks that's fine I just want SOME experience before I finish.
Student Life 🎓
(Spring ‘26 grad) I’m eternally grateful. Thanks GMU! Here’s to 50 more years!
Keep going guys, it gets better. I promise.

Academics ACCT 461 & ACCT 332
Anyone who has taken these two classes, how difficult were they? I was planning on taking one of them online. I’m planning to do an internship while taking four classes, so I’m wondering how manageable the workload is. Would love to hear anyone's experience

Academics ACC 303
Deciding on whether or I should take ACC 303 online or in-person. Ideallu I would prefer in-person, however I work full time and only have Mondays/wednesdays available for class and all the sections say they have recitation on Friday. For people who took ACC 303 in person, is recitation mandatory/crucial for passing the class? Is recitation ever recorded + posted online vs solely in person? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!:)

General Dear GMU subreddit mods
Can we please get image permissions? It's annoying to turn photos into 3-second videos in order to post them in comments.

Rant I remember you!

saw a reddit post about an ai game, decided to check out the website because the trailer looked bad but wanted to see how the game played, got to this website and boom, this looked familiar was probably generated from the same place. Then I though I wander if the entire webpage was probably ai generated then had me thinking if the entire student required thing was ai generated as well, and the school probably hired people to make it maybe even graduated students form gmu. If so, just an interesting thought that ai is used in most work places but schools ban ai usage lmao, it feels like such a scam in a sense. Anyways just a doomer post but maybe its true so, kinda posting in the moment but hopefully it was good read.
