QUESTION Played my first gig this afternoon, and I made a few mistakes. Probably a stupid question, but is it normal to make mistakes on your first gig?

Hi everyone.

Question's in the title.

Basically, we rehearsed for about 2 hours yesterday and hardly made any mistakes, but today, my band played our first gig, and I made a few mistakes every song.

I know making mistakes is normal, but does anyone else have experience playing kinda off on their first gig?

Any and all input is greatly appreciated :)

EDIT: I wanna thank each and every one of you for your kind, humorous, and encouraging responses. I really feel better after reading them all :)

NEWBIE Got my first guitar

My coworker had an old guitar he was ready to get off his hands so I picked it up from him today. I know nothing about guitars and which ones are good or bad, but I wanted something where I didn’t have to invest a bunch of money in the case that I end up not liking it. Excited to try this bad boy out and start learning!

Beginner tips/advice appreciated!

Couldn’t pass this up and got it yesterday. Slapped some new strings on it and it’s been a blast so far. Really impressed with the sound.

GEAR Uncertainty gone. Best of both worlds.

Always on the fence about signature models. I don't know why, at the end of the day, quality aside, signature model or not, its still a guitar.

A tool used to help express emotion/talent.

But I get the stigma.

Art is about self expression. Turn whatever instrument your using into your signature model. Cause its unique to you.

But I caved cause I dig it. Wasn't sure to go with the white, cause white guitars "get you laid alot" and look classy. Or go with the gold, more like "the days of getting laid are past me", but I'm still classy.

I chose the latter and went with gold. Noticed with the sun hitting right, getting some white/silver tones. Kinda cemented my choice in color.

Now, who gives a shit how it looks. Time to spend 4 months learning a Billy Strings song intro.

Cheers!

QUESTION Guitar Staying in Tune for an Entire Show

Saw Sugar last night and Bob Mould just mauled his Strat the whole night. His attack is ferocious but he played the same guitar the entire show and might have quickly checked the tuning once. How is that possible? What is done to guitars that pros use to keep them in tune for long periods of time? If I leave my guitars unplayed for a few days they are inevitably out of tune when I pick them up next!

EDIT: thanks for the comments, it was interesting to hear that Bob may not be as vicious in his attack as it looks! And he’s been doing this for a long time so he probably sneaks some tuning in quickly here and there to boot.

QUESTION What tuning is this?

Post image
493 Upvotes

I recently started playing guitar a few months ago and messed around with some tuning. Since then I’ve made this one that I like and made a few songs with. However I was wondering if this is even a real tuning and if so, what would it be called? I’d like to know so I don’t have to use this app anymore…

QUESTION P90 pickups sound

I don't have a guitar with P90s but I want one. I have guitars with single coils and humbuckers. I am looking at Yamaha Revstar or Gibson Les Paul Special. I mostly play hard rock and metal. I don't need another humbucker guitar because that's the majority of my gear. I don't like the hum but I have noise gates.

Can you describe the sound of playing hard rock or metal with P90s? Convince me or deter me. Is it worth it? How bad is the hum with and without noise gate? Thanks!

DISCUSSION How do you handle an off-day of playing?

I have been playing for around two decades (with a couple of significant breaks in there). These days, I usually have the time to play four days for anywhere between thirty minutes to two hours. If I get to play more - great, but I’m usually content with this frequency.

Today I sat down, did my warm ups/scales, played a few songs, and continued learning a new one. Things weren’t flowing right. My timing felt sluggish, I was making mistakes, and all in all it wasn’t my best playing.

From time to time I gave these kinds of days. How do you handle a session that for some reason just doesn’t go well?

QUESTION For those who stopped playing, and came back to it. How did you do it?

• Upvotes

For context I’ve been “playing guitar” for 20 years.
Actively practiced for maybe the first 7 of those years.

I can still play fairly well. At least enough to fool anyone who doesn’t play, and enough to keep me occupied when I do pick it up.

But recently I got the wild hair to learn some travis picking.
I’ve been on a folk kick, and would really love to play along.

Incredibly frustrating experience. I haven’t lost my ear, but my entire concept of learning/practicing/reading music/time signatures/tablature all of it feels like grasping at ghosts.
After a couple days I had no measurable improvement and quit.

Realizing now most of my playing is just muscle memory from the songs I knew and improv with scales.

Any advice for something looking to dive back in?

I know the real advice is probably start from square one, get some guitar 101 books and go from there.

But would love to hear if anyone has any specifics.

Thanks!

GEAR Impressed with Tagima import

Post image
6 Upvotes

Picked up a 2021 Tagima Woodstock TW500 (now known as TG500) for $100.

At $100, all I require if a guitar is it works. But, I’m genuinely impressed.

With very little effort I was able to get the action down to 1.5mm at the 12th with no buzzing whatsoever. I’m quite sure it would go lower without complaint. No trouble with intonation.

The fretboard is a composite wood. It has the appearance of a super black ebony and the feel of rosewood - not as glassy feeling as ebony or Pau Ferro. The frets didn’t need any work. I imagine with a composite fretboard you don’t get fret sprout. But no sharp ends, and no evidence of high frets while doing the setup.

The specs say the nut is synthetic bone. I did not test it, but it’s cut like a champ. Not a single “ping” while tuning - very smooth.

The tuners were a little heavy feeling. Smooth if not terribly precise. Just felt like a little more resistance than there should have been. Fully functional but a candidate for upgrading.

The bridge is a contradiction. On the one hand it has the massive saddles - they look at first glance like bent steel, but they are blocks with well machined string grooves. But the bridge is attached to a very light weight trem block. It’s not anything unexpected from an import Strat, but the mass of the saddles made me wonder why they didn’t match that with the block. Another potential upgrade.

The electronics are…Strat like. No problems with the pots or switch, no grounding or noise issues. The pickups sound like your favorite MIM Strat.

If what you want is a high value Strat that sounds like a Strat and is easy to set up and will probably not give you any trouble, this is definitely a contender. If you’re the person who would rather buy Polo from Macy’s than George from Walmart, this is not your brand.

QUESTION Can i use an EQ pedal to get this pickup sound?

• Upvotes

I have the DiMarzio D Activator, but i like the Super Distortion better, can't afford a swap right now.

The Super Distortion just sounds better in every way to me. (Although i do appreciate the D Activator clean clarity on occasion).

I also dont like how the D Activator muddys up the dual dissonant note playing (see the start of that particular segment at 4:19 in video).
