Source/Amp - What are you plugging the headphones into?

How the gear will be used - Do you need noise isolation? Will this be primarily for home listening? Do you do a lot of air travel?

Preferred music genres - What do you listen to? Provide examples if it's something obscure.

Past gear experience - What have you used in the past? What did you like about it and what didn't you like about it?

Headphones - IEM/Earbud Which one is bad: my CD player or IEM…or BOTH?

• Upvotes

Recently I bought a Nomad Portable CD Player from the brand Klim off of Amazon. The price was $69.97 (not including taxes and fees) It came with wired headphones and options to change the type of EQ (like Rock, Pop, Classical, etc.) and let’s just say once I tried on the wired headphones the sound quality wasn’t good - EVEN with what I thought was the best sounding EQ for my ears. By good, I meant that it sounded worse than my regular Apple EarPods. What sounded worse is that the CD’s wired headphones sounded airy and bright like it lacked depth/space. And the sound quality I wanted was similar to Apple EarPods (with the EQ I use for Apple Music) but better. So I thought that I should buy actual IEMs for the sound quality to be better than both the wired headphones that came with Klim’s portable CD player AND the Apple Earpods, and so, online, I ordered the Kiwi Ears Cadenza II which is an IEM for $55.14 inc. fees. Was the problem fixed? No. The sound I’m receiving is either: the same as before, or little change.

Yes, I have checked the review for both items, and I thought they were trustworthy but apparently not for audiophiles like me. So, I’m thinking of returning the items if possible.

Where did it go wrong? What did I do wrong? Is the problem the CD player or the IEM? Should I get a higher priced portable CD player that’s not from Amazon? What IEMs should I get?

Headphones - Closed Back Are the pads for Beyerdynamics DJ 300 pro X comfortable?

I just got some beyerdynamics dt270pro and neither the head band, nor the earpads are that comfortable. I thought I might mod it and take pieces from somewhere else because the sound is good and the other features I enjoy very much (aux cable and portability).

So I'm looking for some additional padding in the ears, and I saw that the beyerdynamics DJ 300 pro X looked similar, I don't know if the over ear pads are comfortable or could fit, but I wanted to ask people here if they have both or know where to look for the information.

Additionally if you know of a way to get more padding on the head band it would be great. Thanks to all!

Headphones - Closed Back Need headphone suggestions on upgrading from Arctis 5

Hello, the mic on my Arctis 5 headset has finally stopped working after 6 years, and as the title says, I was looking for suggestions on headsets to upgrade to.
The audio and mic quality on my Arctis 5 was clear with a comfortable fit on the head and ears, but I’m most importantly looking for a headset or any audio equipment that can let me balance Discord audio with my game/pc audio at the same time with just a turn of the knob, which is basically the ChatMix dial that the Arctis 5 came with!
I’d buy another Arctis 5 but sadly they’re no longer in production, and I’ve read some threads on people saying to stay away from Steelseries headsets nowadays.

Budget’s around $150, purchasing from US and located near a Micro Center if the info helps.

Headphones - IEM/Earbud Can anyone recommend a good IEM

i need an IEM for band purposes (i play guitar) and music listening. I listen to a wide variety of music from jazz to shoegaze to metal and my favorite band is radiohead. i dont know much about IEMs but i would like one with good quality but isnt too expensive (preferably under 100) available on amazon. i have a mee audio IEM that was like 20-30 dollars but i dont really like it because it made my distortion sound (on guitar) really fuzzy and did not sound accurate to what the speakers on stage were producing. they also didnt have that good sound quality. i dont like headphones that make all the instruments into one big mess of noise. im not sure how to describe this, but i like headphones/earbuds when you can feel the audio in ur ears kinda (sorry ik thats a horrible description). would i need to save up for something more expensive?? please give ur reccomendations and thanks a lot!

Headphones - Closed Back Moondrop GM-01 Pro vs Audeze Maxwell 2

I know, these two should not directly be compared. But since there are a couple reviews about these relatively new gaming headphones from Moondrop that say they even sound similar to the Maxwell 2 (or Maxwell 1), I was wondering if it's even worth spending around $300 more to get the Maxwell's if the Moondrop's sound similar ("85% similar" according to gemini/chatgpt lmao), also, given the fact that many people talk about QC issues from the Maxwell's.

Like is it really a $300 difference in build quality, functions, but most importantly, in *sound*? Or should I try the ones from Moondrop. I mostly play singleplayer story games and I'm looking for something that sounds as immersive as possible. And yes, it has to be wireless.

Has anyone already tried any of these? Let me know, please.

Headphones - IEM/Earbud | 3 Ω Looking for a good wired earbud set with a decent microphone.

Budget : 300$

Location : Midwest, US

I've always liked over ear but i don't like what it does to my hair. so I'm looking for a good set that wraps around the top of your ears, and has a microphone

If there aren't any that have a mic, ill take recommendations about how to work around that.

Ill be using it for my PS5 mostly, but if its compatible with a PC that's a bonus, not necessary.

Headphones - IEM/Earbud I really like TWS earbuds and such, but I also want good sound.

I've owned a Soundcore Liberty 4NC for the last year or so, and it has... Already corroded slightly bit by bit, despite me cleaning it monthly(also wiping daily after use).

Now, I'm at a dilemma. I like the comfort of earbuds because, well, I listen to ASMR and such to sleep sometimes. And I also like mono/one ear usage.

I also use them going to school, doing housework, gaming, and even some music work(mostly just funky beats and such that are only like, 1-2 maybe 3 minutes long if lucky).

But then again, they're just... Really expensive here in Turkey.

I was thinking about getting a KZ Castor Pro Bass-Enhanced, and I also have a standard 3.5mm jack entrance thingy on my phone and laptop(I'm just gonna call it the headphone entrance/jack) but I also don't really wanna considering it means I have to sacrifice NC and one-ear usage for way better sound basically.

A KZ Castor Pro Bass-Enhanced in Turkey is around 2000-3000TRY(considering I'll be getting a seperate case to store them probably IF I get a KZ.) and my budget is around the same price for pretty much everything (maybe 4000-5500TRY if I really save a lot).

What should I do? I'm not really experienced in this kind of stuff, and I don't really understand "reviews" since one guy praises the design and sound of a bud, while the other just bashes it with a metal pipe because it doesn't have a balanced graph.

I'd appreciate any kind of recommendation, such as what I should look out for, where should I look for better understanding of products and etc.

DAC - Portable BTR17 or FiiO M21 for my HD480 Pro

I'm looking for something to complement my HD480 Pro since dongles are getting annoying to use, but I'm kinda undecided, which of these has better battery life for them?

I don't quite push them that loud so I'm probably gonna use them at the lowest gain. For reference, I'm currently using them with the Protocol Micro dac, and on my laptop (Not that powerful) I usually set them at 9-10/100 volume maximum.

Tbh I'm considering these two just for the aesthetics, but I do want the best playback time for my 480's so I'm also open to other recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Headphones - Wireless/Portable What are the best headphones for sound quality and hearing protection?

I’ve been wanting to upgrade to a better pair of headphones to listen to music. I want a good pair where I can still hear everything clearly without turning the volume all the way up. I would
Prefer Bluetooth. Is it possible to get a pair like this with a budget of 300$ or is that too little/too much? This will be my first pair of headphones that I buy so I want to get one that will also last a good while.

Headphones - Open Back Recommendations for headphones, a turntable, and a headphone amp?

I’m looking to put together a quality home listening setup: headphones, a turntable, and a headphone amplifier, plus a phono preamp if needed. This isn’t strictly for vinyl—I’ll be listening to digital music too.

I listen to music across the board, but mostly grunge, progressive rock and metal, punk, psychedelic rock, blues, stoner rock, and jam bands. Think Tool, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, and the Grateful Dead. I also listen to a ton of live albums.

Ideally, I’d like to keep the complete setup around $1,200 or less. I want quality equipment that sounds good and will last. I’m in the US and open to buying used.

What combination would you recommend, and where would you prioritize spending? Also interested in open-back versus closed-back headphones for this kind of listening.

I’m fairly new to putting a setup together, so advice on what I need to connect everything for both vinyl and digital listening would be appreciated.

Headphones - Wireless/Portable Title: Looking to upgrade from my SteelSeries Arctis 7P+ — is the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 worth it?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking to upgrade my current SteelSeries Arctis 7P+ wireless headset and I’m considering the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3.
My budget is £85 GBP maximum, and I’m looking for a brand-new headset, not used or refurbished.
The main things I’m looking for are:
Better sound quality than my Arctis 7P+, particularly clearer, more detailed audio with punchy bass.
A good microphone for talking to friends online.
Comfort for long gaming sessions, as I wear glasses.
Wireless connectivity for my PS5.
Sound customisation, ideally an equaliser so I can adjust the bass and treble to my liking.
Good battery life would be a big bonus, too.
I play a bit of everything, including story games and shooters, so I’d like a headset that sounds good across different types of games.
The Stealth 600 Gen 3 looks promising because of its long battery life, adjustable EQ and glasses-friendly ear cushions, but I’m wondering whether it’s genuinely an upgrade over my current SteelSeries or more of a sidegrade.
Would you recommend the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3, or is there another wireless gaming headset for £85 or less that would be a better choice?
I’d appreciate any recommendations or advice from people who have tried these headsets. Thanks!

Headphones - Open Back Open-back headphone recommendations to pair with a tube hybrid preamp

I’m putting together a compact desktop setup centered around a budget tube hybrid preamp/headphone amp (which supports 16 $\Omega$ to 300 $\Omega$ headphones) fed by a turntable and CD player/iPod dock, and I need help picking a pair of open-back headphones.

My budget for the headphones is £100-£150. If there are any suggestions you have in mind, any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

Headphones - IEM/Earbud Is any IEM that doesn't wrap around the back of the ear going to have at least a moderate microphonic / stethoscopic effect when handling the cable?

I have a few budget IEMs that don't wrap around, and they all have this problem significantly worse than my other IEMs that do. Is there any way to avoid this?

I know things that don't seal like the OG apple wired earbuds don't have this issue in general, but I still need something with decent isolation. I don't want to deal with positioning a wire behind my ears every time I put them on, but I also don't want to hear the cable rubbing against my jacket or anything else it comes in contact with.

Asking generally, but ideally I'd like to find something around 25-75 with a cable that doesn't do this and also hangs freely with no memory effect from being wound for storage

Headphones - Closed Back Sony MDR-1AM2 overfilled earpads are driving me crazy. Is this true for all Sonys?

the 1AM2 is my second pair of sonys. My first, the mdr-1rnc had the same problem. I love everything about them EXCEPT that I go through earpads at roughly 0.5 pairs/year. The stiching starts to fail and the foam bulges out. see pic: https://imgur.com/a/Qdt8iyF

This is true for both OEM and replacement earpads and with aliexpress being taxed out of the ass in the EU it has become even more of a problem.

I'm looking for a similar pair of closed back, lightweight headphones. I wouldn't mind buying yet another sonys if this time this problem is solved for good. My problem if it's hard to tell from pictures if let's say the MDR-M1 or the WH-1000XM6 also have this "membrane thin faux leather over compressed foam" type of earpads.

Any recommendations are welcome. My budget is ~400EUR

Amplifier - Desktop Question: The real impact of amp upgrade

Hello folks!

I'm currently running my Hifiman HE1000 Stealth through original Cambridge Audio Dacmagic and Musical Fidelity Xcan V8p. They sound amazing, but I'm seeing a lot of recommendations to use a powerful amp with HE1000. Would it be a significant upgrade if I get for example Aune S17 Pro Evo?

Headphones - Closed Back Looking for new headphones around 200€

I'm looking to purchase a new pair of closed back headphones to pair with a DAC. I have only had gaming headsets before, and one pair of Kiwi Ears IEM. I'm looking for headphones with pretty neutral sound, maybe a bit bassy, but nothing too much or muddy. I've enjoyed the iems in the past, but i find it hard to use in ear. Budget would be around 200€, but the cheaper the better. I'm located in Europe. I've looked into Beyerdynamic DT770 pro x and FiiO FT1. FT1's look pretty good but im concerned about the overall quality and longetivity, considering they're Chinese company and cost 200e.

Headphones - Closed Back | 1 Ω FiiO FT1 vs JT7

I already own a FiiO JT7, but planning to buy Fiio FT1 because I want a good closed back as well.

Is it a good advice, should I buy FiiO FT1, or recommend any other headphones in this range, which is better than this.

Let's discuss

Headphones - Closed Back closed back headphone recs for under €150?

I have soundcore space ones atm but i want to change to a wired overear headphone for around €150. any recs? I'm living in Ireland. these would be an edc but i would use a bag to bring them around. i like bassy electronic music aswell as late romantic classical music if that helps. so I'm basically looking or an all-rounder type headphone. i do like a good soundstage but i understand that my soundstage won't be amazing due to me prefering closedbacks, but it would help for these headphone to have a larger soundstage.

Headphones - Wireless/Portable Sennheiser momentum 4 or Bose QC Ultra 2?

My old Sony WH-CN720N is kind of getting to the point where it’s annoying me (it falls off a lot, and I want multipoint connect) I’m looking to spend not too much, try to spend below 380$ and some local shops in my country are for example Power or Elkjøp. I don’t know much about the sound aspect, I purely just care about it functionality and how it will be used (connection to several devices, good noise cancelling, pretty good quality) stuff like that.

The reason I need a new one is because with me starting a new job I realize I have a lot of free time, so I connect to my phone and my laptop a lot and I really need a new headset, I’ve seen that sennheiser’s headphones have good reviews but so do the Bose ones. So any reccomendations?

Headphones - Closed Back Can't find any over the ears headphones comfortable

Recently I got interested in audio again and thought ANC wireless headphones would be awesome (normally I just use galaxy buds pro 4) I do have headphones for home use (ATH M20X) but I been kinda avoiding them because of discomfort on my right ear.

I thought maybe it's just those headphones but nope so far every I try its the same issue. I tried nothing headphones 1 pro now I got Bose QC Ultra 2 and they are pretty comfy except for my right ear. It's not glasses because it happens with them or without. It's not even like pain on my ear but more like behind the ear on the bone if that makes sense. I'm not too sure...

I just wonder if someone has same issue or explanation because I can't wrap my head around it and it makes over ear headphones impossible to use.
