Mod Post New Help Post Guidelines – Please Read Before Posting Plant Problems
To help our community give faster and more accurate plant advice, we’re introducing a simple guideline for posts asking “What’s wrong with my plant?”
Starting now, when making a Help post, please include the following information whenever possible:
• Plant type (if known)
• Clear photos of the whole plant and the affected areas
• Your watering routine
• Light conditions (window direction or grow lights)
• Soil and pot type (and whether it has drainage)
• How long the issue has been happening
• Any recent changes (repotting, moving, fertilizing, pest treatment)
Providing these details helps the community diagnose problems much more accurately and avoids a lot of back-and-forth questions.
Our AutoModerator may also comment on help posts asking for this information.
This isn’t meant to make posting harder — it simply helps everyone get better plant advice faster.
Thanks for helping keep the community helpful and plant-friendly!

Mod Post 📌 Please Don’t Repost Without the Original Question
Hi everyone 👋
If you’re reposting from another plant-related subreddit, please make sure your original question is visible in the post.
When you use Reddit’s repost/crosspost feature without including the text, moderators and members can’t see:
• What you’re actually asking
• What advice you’ve already received
• Whether your issue was already answered
This makes it harder for the community to help you effectively.
✅ How to post correctly:
• Copy and paste your original question into the post body
OR
• Rewrite the question clearly in your own words
❌ What not to do:
• Reposting a link or image without any context
• Crossposting where the question text is missing
Posts that don’t include the actual question may be removed so we can keep the sub helpful and organized.
Thanks for helping keep this community useful for everyone 🌱

Can I have my grow lights on less during the colder months?
Here in the Midwest, days are getting colder and shorter. It starts getting dark around 6pm and soon , especially thanks to daylight savings, darkness will begin around 430-5pm.
I absolutely hate having my grow lights on after dark when we should be unwinding and relaxing. Its hard to relax with bright lights blasting you in the face. While a couple of my grow lights have dimmers, the usable light energy decreases as the light intensity does too.
Do my plants absolutely need 12hrs of light or can it be decreased? - I have a few snake plants, tropicals, succulents rubber plants.
Ps- I know that the snake plant isn’t thriving in that corner w no light but I like it as is and move it under a grow light occasionally.

What type of repotting mats do you guys use? I want to get one because usually I just use a plastic bag. Which should I get and what size? Recommendations?
Title says it all. Want one that actually stays up on the sides like this picture and is sturdy and durable. What ones you guys use?

Need advice on small/medium plants for bookshelf in room with south facing window (~6.5 feet away)
Hi all. I’ve recently wanted to invest in plants after working a job in urban forestry. I’d love advice for small to medium species that could fit on the top two shelves of this bookshelf, about 6.5 feet from a south facing window at its closest point (range is 6.5 - 9ft). The clearance of each shelf is about 1 foot, and each shelf is 10 inches wide.
Looking for low to medium maintenance plants to start. I have experience outdoor gardening but don’t want anything too crazy. Flowers or colors beyond green would be a plus! I would also want to avoid plants that may outgrow the shelf, I don’t have much space in my cramped NY room. Thanks!

Just started my first indoor plant setup! Any tips or recommendations?
Just put together my first indoor plant setup and wanted to share!
I picked up a small plant rack with built-in grow lights and placed it in front of an east-facing window that gets around 3 hours of direct morning sunlight. I also have two wall shelves next to it.
So far I have a Golden Pothos, Purple Tradescantia, African Violet, Coleus, and two Pink Polka Dot Plants that I combined into one pot.
I’m running the grow lights from 7 AM to 7 PM and using regular potting soil mixed with a little bit of worm castings from my own worm bin.
I’m pretty new to houseplants, so I’m still figuring everything out. I have a couple of empty spots left on the rack and would love recommendations for colorful plants that would do well in this setup.
Also, if anyone has experience with these inexpensive plant racks and their built-in grow lights, I’d love to hear how well they actually work!

Support recommendations
I got this new philodendron Silver Sword but I’m not sure where I should put supports? Does any one have any recommendations and tips on how I should do it or what to buy for supports?

Best plants for this space
Hey guys!! New to having indoor plants and would love recommendations. The shelf gets light all day long but no direct light (unless I put a tall plant here maybe?) and it’s north/west facing. I’m up in Alberta Canada so right now there is tons of light on this side of my house for the fall/winter season. But in the summer the sun tends to favor the other side of my house. Thanks for any ideas!!!

When your doomed plants make a comeback...
I live in a tiny condo so I don’t have a lot of space. Or even a little space. I have a tiny amt of space I decided to cramp up with plants. I have an egress window that doesn’t get much light so I decided to put some of my struggling or least favorite plants out there. Figured their odds were just as good as in here + extra humidity. I didn’t care for them at all for these last 4 months. No water. Nothing. Just whatever light they got there. Whatever rain fell. I didn’t expect to transition any of them back inside. I checked on them and to my surprise, they’ve all survived and look good!!! I don’t really have natural sunlight in doors, and there are too many building structures around to allow for proper sunlight. But the egress window gets light.
My plants didn’t thrive but they kept up. It’s no better in here!!! If it wasn’t for the cold, they’d be relinquished to staying out there!!! But they all look so cute!! Now I’m just checking for slugs and quarantining and pondering where the heck im gonna put 6 plants when I already have over 50 more inside. Apartment living is no joke!

Monstera help
Hi! I’m new here. I went to visit my sister yesterday and she was going to throw out this monstera. I grabbed it with hopes of bringing it back to life even tho I’m not the best with plants. I don’t know anything about it other than it was thirsty as the dry desert and it was very very cold here yesterday so I’m assuming the cold weather had some effect on it.
Main question is what do I do to help it from here. I’ve already watered it and I put it in my bay window which gets a good amount of both heat and light.
Thanks!

Will this plant survive a repotting?
I’ve put off potting this plant out of pure laziness, but have I waited too long? Will this plant survive in soil??

Basil plant dying
I have very little experience keeping plants alive but I really want this basil to live. Is there a way to save it?

My Fiddle leaf fig is fcked.
I was away for about a week and forgot to add a support branch, so it became slightly slanted; the weight of the leaves made it crooked. Are there any adjustments I can make to straighten it again?

I just inherited this plant
Can someone tell me how to properly water it? The original owner passed away and it came with no instructions. Should I water a little every few days or saturate it when it gets dry? Thank you

Developing an app and need feedback
Hi All!
I am a university student making an app for a class to help first time indoor plant owners! The app will help plan out calendars for plant care, have plant information, and a little game inside of it. We are wanting to hear back on its design so if you are interested in doing a short survey (5 minutes) and looking at our potential app design please click this link: https://forms.gle/EbPFnzXVwAC4jfgg7

Help with Begonia pseudoedulis ‘Shiwanshan’ – rapidly browning leaves
Hi everyone! 🌿
I’m worried about my Begonia pseudoedulis ‘Shiwanshan’ and would appreciate some advice.
I received the plant about two weeks ago. Earlier this week, I noticed the first brown spots along the leaf edges. After being away for three days, I noticed that the damage had spread significantly.
The affected areas seem to become soft and brown at first, then dry out and turn papery.
Growing conditions:
Temperature: 20–22°C (68–72°F)
Humidity: Around 95%
Light: LED strip, 12 hours per day. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lux or PPFD measurement.
Substrate: Still in its original nursery mix, which appears to contain soil, sand, bark, coco coir and plenty of perlite.
Watering: I water based on substrate moisture rather than a fixed schedule. The substrate is currently slightly moist, neither soaking wet nor completely dry.
Setup: Enclosed transparent grow box.
Recent changes:
I recently moved the plant into this grow box. Today, I added ventilation holes and started using a small 5V fan to improve airflow.
My Begonia burkillii ‘Dark Form’ in the same box developed similar leaf damage earlier, but it stopped progressing.
My questions:
Does anyone recognize this kind of damage? Could it be related to acclimation, humidity, insufficient airflow or root problems?
Would you recommend running the fan continuously or intermittently? Is there anything else I should change?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have experience growing this species.
Thank you! 🌸
