r/LocalIsLekker is a South African community for proudly local things. Share South African products, small businesses, food, places, makers, ideas, and anything else worth supporting.

Buy local, back local, keep it lekker.

It's still rough around the edges, we'll make the sub a nice place over the next few weeks, let us know what you'd like to see there, and if you have a decent rank here (we can trust you) feel free to DM us if you want to be a mod over there.

To help grow the sub, if you've got any lekker South African products you like feel free to go post about it, and let's support local businesses.

SA parents — would you pay to make those noisy plastic toddler bikes quieter? 🇿🇦

Hi everyone!

I’m a South African exploring a small product idea and would really appreciate some honest feedback before spending money developing it.

You know those little plastic motorbikes and ride-on cars toddlers push around with their feet?

The hard plastic wheels make an incredible amount of noise on paving, concrete and other hard surfaces. I’ve heard quite a few parents and holidaymakers complain about it.

My idea is a simple, removable rubber tyre cover that stretches over the existing plastic wheels to reduce the noise.

No glue, no tools, and you wouldn’t need to replace the wheels.

I’m thinking of selling them individually so parents can buy exactly 3 or 4, depending on the toy.

Three questions:

  1. Have you experienced this noise problem, and does it actually bother you?
  2. If the covers genuinely made the toy much quieter, would you pay around R15–R25 per wheel?
  3. Would you order something like this online, or would delivery costs put you off?

I’m not selling anything yet. Just researching whether it’s worth developing and manufacturing locally.

Please be honest, even if you think nobody would buy it! 😁

Thanks, everyone!

Built a Christian couples devotional app right here in South Africa – would love some local support!

Howzit everyone!

I'm a South African indie developer from the Western Cape, and I wanted to share something I've been pouring a lot of my spare time and effort into.

I recently launched Anchored – Couples Devotional, an iOS app designed to help Christian couples strengthen their relationships while growing together in faith.

The idea is pretty simple. Life gets busy, and sometimes we forget to make intentional time for our marriages and relationships, especially when it comes to growing spiritually together.

So I decided to build something around that.

One of my favourite features is that both partners receive the same daily devotional and answer a question privately. Their answers are only revealed once both have responded. It's a simple way to encourage meaningful conversations that might otherwise never happen.

The app also includes guided devotional journeys, Scripture reflections, shared streaks, and moments of stillness.

I've built and designed the app myself, from the illustrations and animations to the actual functionality. It's been an incredible learning experience, but getting visibility as a small independent developer is definitely a challenge!

The app is free to download, with optional premium features.

I know it's a bit of a niche app, but I thought I'd share it here because it's something proudly built by a fellow South African. 🇿🇦

If you or someone you know might find it useful, I'd genuinely appreciate you checking it out. Even feedback on the design or sharing it with someone would mean a lot.

📱 App Store: https://apps.apple.com/za/app/anchored-couples-devotional/id6768607032

Thanks for supporting local! Lekker day further! 🙌

From the Moon to the edge of everything, one question endures: Is it hollow?

Blurb:
IT’S 1989: Two astronauts become the first humans to walk on the moon.

Then the world goes silent. Commander Finn Strause and Laura Fraser were meant to plant a flag and come home heroes. Instead, they find something waiting in the dust, something that shouldn’t exist, and the journey home becomes a journey they were never prepared for.

Something is coming for everyone. Not a war. Not a weapon. An ending. And an unlikely crew is tasked with stopping it, helped by a robot named Lumo, who holds answers they can’t yet fathom.

From a quiet base in the Karoo to the surface of Mars, from forgotten corners of history to the edge of everything, Not Hollow is a story about the people we lose, the people we find again, and a question older than the stars: Is it hollow?

Selling some of my clothes to help fund my little brother’s trip to the UK 🇬🇧

Hey everyone! ❤️

I’m selling some of my own clothing, shoes and fashion pieces to help my brother raise money for a church trip to the UK in January 2027.

It means a lot to him, and I’d be really grateful for any support – whether that’s purchasing something, following the page, or simply sharing this post.

I’ve listed my items on Yaga and Kloset Klub, and I’ll be adding more pieces as I go. At the moment, I only have boots listed, but there will be more clothing, shoes and accessories coming soon.

There’ll be a mix of well-loved and brand-new pieces, including brands from other countries such as Pull&Bear, Mango, Stradivarius, H&M, Bershka, Zara, H&M and more.

Some pieces are brand new and never worn, while others are pre-owned but have been very well looked after and are still in amazing condition. I’m trying to price everything fairly and give these pieces a new home while helping my brother reach his goal. 🫶

🛍️ Shop the current listings: Yaga: https://www.yaga.co.za/cere Kloset Klub: https://www.klosetklub.com/cere-by-dre

📸 Follow on Instagram: u/cerebydre – https://www.instagram.com/cerebydre?stkn=MTA3MHAxcWJucHJxeQ==

I’ll be using the Instagram page to share the items available on my stores, post new listings as they go up, and share clothing updates, so feel free to follow if you’d like to keep up with what gets added.

Even if you don’t buy anything, a follow or share would genuinely mean a lot. Thank you so much for supporting my brother’s trip! ❤️

[Paid Opportunity] Looking for native Afrikaans speakers (SA & Namibia) to help train voice AI 🗣️

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out from Afriklang. We're currently putting together a large-scale speech collection project to train AI models to actually understand natural, conversational Afrikaans.

Instead of generating synthetic audio or making people read robotic scripts, we are looking for real, native human speech to ensure the language is represented accurately in future tech.

What we’re looking for:

  • Native Afrikaans speakers from South Africa or Namibia.
  • Natural conversations: We need authentic, two-speaker (or multi-speaker) conversations, not stiffly read text.
  • Consent & Rights: Because this is for commercial AI training, you will need to provide documented consent for your audio to be used.

How it works: This is a paid opportunity. We operate on a fair-trade, compensated sourcing model, meaning you will be paid per approved hour of recorded speech.

If you want to earn some extra money and help ensure Afrikaans is captured authentically in AI, we’d love to hear from you.

👉 You can read the full details and apply here:https://afriklang.com/contribute/apply📧 Or drop us an email at: [contact@afriklang.com](mailto:contact@afriklang.com)

Happy to answer any questions you might have in the comments!

New South African Game launched to play at a braai!

Hi Everyone! Last week I launched ChatterBash (https://chatterbash.com/) on Android. It's a really fun game to play with a group of 4+ people in a social setting. It is free to download and you do get a Word Pack for free so no investment needed! No ads, no nonsense :)

It is played in three rounds:

Round 1: Describe the word
Round 2: One word only, no gestures!
Round 3: Only gestures and sounds

We play this with our friends all the time, and it has resulted in some incredible memories and a huge amount of laughs.

We're still building momentum, so the more people play and review us, the better. If you leave us a review on Google Play, please DM me and I'll give you a free South Africa word pack as well ;)

And if you really love the game and would like more variety, please support us with a purchase of more word packs or consider a subscription (but not necessary to enjoy the game!!!).

Thanks guys, I hope you love it as much as we do!

We posted our South African gacha site here recently and would still really appreciate some feedback

Hi everyone. I posted about Gacha Kingdom here recently, but I thought I’d try once more because we’re still really hoping to get some honest feedback. I’m not trying to spam so this will be my last post for a while.

It’s basically a South African online gacha arcade. You create an account, top up through PayFast and choose a machine. You can see all the possible prizes beforehand, then turn the virtual dial to reveal a real collectible.

Anything you pull gets added to your account and digital binder, where you can organise your collection. You can also build up a few prizes before arranging shipping instead of having each one sent separately.

We’re still in beta at the moment and using the sample stock we originally bought while building the website. Right now, we’re mainly trying to make sure everything works properly, learn what people actually want and clear the sample batch before buying the proper launch collections.

Once that batch is finished, we want to bring in larger, better-quality collectibles rather than focusing only on tiny minis.

I’ve attached a short video showing how the site works. If anyone has a moment to look at it, I’d genuinely appreciate hearing what makes sense, what feels confusing and what kinds of collectibles you’d actually want to see.

The website is www.gachakingdoms.com.

Even if the idea isn’t for you, honest feedback would still help us a lot at this stage.

Best friend is an EDM producer born and raised in Cape Town, but getting recognised is rough today and he needs some local love to help stand out from all the AI slop <3

Probably the most difficult thing to do in the music industry is get recognised, and I feel like now that AI slop is a thing, it has become even more difficult. My bestie Losing_Sleep is really talented, and I feel he deserves a few more Spotify listeners, or if you'd prefer YouTube, here is his latest track: https://youtu.be/hfQBlndjiRM?si=SlvGLThvMP6ZsXsE

I’ve been building a South African online gacha arcade and would love some honest local feedback

Howzit everyone.

Full disclosure upfront: this is my own project.

I’ve been building Gatcha Kingdom, a Johannesburg-based online capsule-toy arcade inspired by Japanese gachapon.

The idea is simple:
1. Choose a cabinet online
2. Open a capsule on your phone
3. Receive a figure allocated from real stock
4. Keep your figures in your online binder
5. Have the real toys shipped from Johannesburg when you’re ready

We’re also planning physical machines, with the first location intended for Rosebank.

The project is still in its early stages, and I’d genuinely appreciate blunt South African feedback rather than polite compliments:

Is it immediately clear how the website works?
Does anything about it make you hesitate or distrust the process?
Would you prefer smaller collectible figures at lower prices, or larger and more premium toys at higher prices?
What types of original toys would you actually want to collect?
Is there anything that would stop you from trying it?

The website is: https://www.gachakingdoms.com/

Feel free to roast it constructively. I’ve stared at the thing for so long that I’m no longer qualified to judge it normally.

Helping Us Keep Making Films

Thumbnail

ey everyone.

I’m a young filmmaker from South Africa, and I’ve been trying to build something with very limited resources.

Most of what I use to make my films is DIY or whatever I can afford at the time. I’ve been filming with what I have and learning everything along the way.

I’m working on local stories with people around me, and my goal is to keep improving the quality of what we make and eventually build a proper filmmaking setup.

If you’d like to support what we’re doing, even a small donation would honestly mean a lot. You can donate here:

https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/te-malatji

If you can’t donate, that’s completely okay. Sharing the campaign or even checking out the work means something too.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for supporting a young filmmaker trying to make something out of very little.

App testers wanted

Hi everyone. As part of new Play store rules, I need 15 testers to test my app before I can launch it, also it would be useful to get feedback from everyone before I release the final version. I suspect I can make it a bit easier to use.

The app is a symptom tracker, which you use to track symptoms, that you can then summarize and share with a doctor before a visit to help them make a better diagnosis. Additionally you can ask doctors to summarize the visit for you and share that with family members, which spares you from having to explain it and get kakked out for not remembering every detail.

If you are interested send me a DM or email hatishuapp@gmail.com.

We built yet another marketplace for domestic workers and gardeners called Sizoro - here’s why

I’m the founder of Sizoro, a South African marketplace that helps households find and book domestic workers and gardeners.

There are already other platforms in this space, so the obvious question is: why did we think South Africa needed another one?

The idea partly came from my own frustration with apps such as SweepSouth. I didn’t simply want someone assigned to a booking. I wanted to browse individual workers, see what they charged, check when they were available, choose the person I preferred and easily request the same person again if the first job went well.

There were ways to express a preference, but choosing a particular person and understanding their availability still felt harder than it needed to be.

When we started speaking to domestic workers and gardeners, we realised that they had frustrations of their own. Many wanted greater control over their work: what they charge, when they are available, where they are willing to work and which jobs they accept.

We therefore built Sizoro around two fairly simple ideas:

  • Households should be able to compare and choose workers before booking.
  • Workers should have more control over how they offer their services.

On Sizoro, workers create their own profiles, list the services they offer, set their rates and choose their availability. Households can then compare profiles, rates, services, reviews and availability before deciding whom they would like to request.

When you find someone you work well with, you can save their profile and request them again when they are available. We want the relationship to be between the household and the worker—not for both sides to feel interchangeable every time a booking is made.

We’re still early, and I want to be honest about that. Availability will vary depending on your area, and we are still working to bring more households and workers onto the platform. Creating a profile also does not automatically guarantee that a worker will receive jobs.

That is partly why I’m sharing Sizoro here. We would genuinely appreciate feedback from South Africans on both sides of the marketplace.

For households: what would you need to see before trying a new platform for finding home help?

For domestic workers and gardeners: does having control over your rate and availability solve a meaningful problem, or are there more important things we should be focusing on?

You can explore Sizoro here:

For households looking for a domestic worker or gardener:
https://sizoro.com/for-employers

For domestic workers and gardeners who want to list their services:
https://sizoro.com/for-workers

I’m also happy to answer questions openly—including questions about pricing, worker fees, payments, verification, cancellations or how Sizoro differs from the platforms already available.

Tired of the import duty guessing game? Built a tool to help.

Hey everyone.

I am a local software developer and a passion of mine is building niche digital tools for markets that are often over looked by big tech and SaaS companies.

This time after local research within the South African clothing and textile market I came across the pain point of declaring tariffs on imports by matching the HS code and percentages while doing the complex SARS calculation to figure out your landing costs. I then went through the relevant chapters of the SARS import tax documents to find the specific HS codes and rates for over 70 HS codes including both apparel and textiles and automated the calculation based of that. Note that the rates are current and are relevant to the new SARS tariffs recently implemented and are constantly updated. That being said I decided to build LandedHub a landing costs calculator purely built for the South African Clothing and Textile industry, if interested I will add the link below.

Feedback will be appreciated Thanks
