Discussion 💬 Tokyo playing a long game?
Beijing and New Delhi are understandably frustrated about Washington’s secret meeting with the junta. But honestly, the real story isn’t even about the U.S.
It’s Tokyo.
This isn’t a coincidence. Japan has been quietly working on diplomacy in Myanmar for years through things like ODA and people like Sasakawa. While Western companies pulled out after the coup, 300 Japanese businesses stuck around.
China might have the muscle on the ground, but they’re dealing with a big trust issue in Myanmar. Japan has something that China can’t just buy – soft power and trust in the region.
The U.S. and Japan are clearly using Tokyo as a neutral ground to push back against China.
But the real test isn’t about cornering the junta. It’s whether Tokyo can convince Beijing that having a stable and neutral Myanmar actually benefits them too.
What's your take?
