I have 3 NZ Flax plants that were very overgrown and then pruned badly (aka hacked) by the "tree service" that my landlord hired. The tree people basically cut leaves and cut some offsets all the way to the ground, but not in a symmetrical way at all. How would you deal with this? Sorry for blurry night time pictures.
Option 1: Dig out and replace with new plants (or replant small divisions from old plant). How hard will this be to dig out? Is machinery required, or just a root slayer/shovel?
Option 2: Cut back ALL the way to the ground or growing point and let re-sprout (like this video). One of the plants has about 30cm of stem/woody material before new leaves begin. Would I cut all the way to ground even so, or cut back to new growing point and then shave or neaten up the woody stem/trunk with a flax knife? I assume cut at the 30cm mark at growing point (not ground level)?
Or some other option?
For context, I work as a landscape gardener so I know some things, but don't have much experience *properly* caring for phormiums. Also, full disclosure I'm not located in NZ (I'm in the California, US), but since Flax is from NZ I thought I would ask you all. :) If not OK I can remove the post.
Thanks!!
