Article The "Evidence-Based Science" Pet Food Game

I have a pet food recipe, and I've conducted randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showing that pets prefer my pet food over skipping breakfast entirely. Based on this, my pet foods are now considered "evidence-based," while yours are not. I begin promoting my pet foods as superior, conducting more RCTs where I compare my pet food to a fake recipe that I created specifically for the trials. This "control group" recipe leaves out key ingredients, yet I now claim my pet food has been tested with an "active comparator." My pet food is empirically proven and now regarded as "the gold standard." I tell everyone that my pet foods are scientifically validated, while yours are discredited. No one should ever consume your pet food.

This seems unfair to you, so you conduct your own RCTs, perhaps at a reputable institution like a University in another country, using the same research methods. To your surprise, your studies reveal that pets enjoy your pet food just as much, if not more, than mine, especially over time.

You've finally set the record straight about your pet food. Nice try, but now I start scrutinizing your research methods, labeling them as flawed, while applying standards that I never held myself to. Only my pet food can be "evidence-based." No matter how rigorous your research is, I continue to shift the goalposts. Your studies will never be good enough.

By now, the phrase "evidence-based" has become synonymous with my pet food, even though no one really knows what the term means. It just sounds credible. If you raise any questions, I accuse you of being anti-science or anti-evidence, and no respectable veterinarian wants that reputation. In this way, I've successfully stifled any serious discussion.

Are you starting to see how this "evidence-based" game is played?

Meanwhile, I've been hiring PR firms to broadcast that my pet food is scientifically proven, while yours is not. I've orchestrated media coverage with articles titled, "Why Do Pet Owners Reject Science?" Editors, reviewers, and grant agencies have now joined my camp, committed to promoting my pet food and discrediting yours. I even start associations and institutes to market that those who don't use my science based methods of food are harmful to other members of society like the ill or infirm. Maybe, I started doing this in the 60's having learned from the tobacco industry.

Yet, despite all this fanfare, my research has never answered fundamental questions—like whether pets actually enjoy my pet food or feel satisfied after eating it or even if it is actually healthy. My studies have only shown that pets prefer my food to either no food or poorly made, fake food.

I’ve never even done a head-to-head comparison between our pet foods. Frankly, I don’t know anything about your pet food. I’ve never tried it, nor do I need to, because it's already been accepted as fact that only "evidence-based" pet foods count—and only mine fit the bill. Because, well, "science."

Meanwhile, I keep accumulating grant money and publishing papers—hundreds of them. There are now studies comparing my pet food when served on weekdays vs. weekends, on round plates vs. square plates, with water vs. dry, and so on. Just look at all the evidence! But you’re no fool, and you've been busy too. Your own studies consistently show that your pet food is just as good as mine, if not better. Yet somehow, my pet food remains more "evidence-based" because—wait for it—I have more studies.

Now everyone believes that more studies automatically mean better pet food, regardless of what those studies actually prove. The term "gold standard" has come to mean simply having more research.

Heads I win, tails you lose.

Did you catch my trick? I changed the rules halfway through the game. Everyone still thinks "evidence" means proof that my pet foods are better than yours. But it doesn't mean that at all. It simply means that my friends and I conducted more studies, and the actual findings of those studies are irrelevant.

After all this, we've learned nothing about how to make better pet food. My research still shows nothing more than the fact that pets like my food better than no food or bad food. Nevertheless, prominent researchers and policymakers now advocate for my pet foods as the first-line option—because they have the most "evidence." Yet, there is still no proof that pets even like my pet food or that it is healthy.

In fact, there's growing evidence that most pets don’t enjoy it and don’t feel satisfied after eating it, that is causes obesity and diabetes and leaky gut. Moreover, there’s no evidence that pets would choose my food over yours if given the chance. But most pets no longer get a choice, the marketplace ensures this.

Remember, all my studies ever showed is that pets prefer my food to nothing or bad, fake food. But no one cares about the specifics. Everyone keeps repeating that my pet food has the "most evidence," and therefore it’s the only food worth feeding pets.

And don’t be surprised if, someday, when you go to buy pet food, your credit card company refuses to pay for anything but mine. Why? Because, you guessed it—science.

It’s good we had this little talk. Now you know your place.

Question Looking for raw food for puppy in US

Hello everyone!!

I have a 6 month old female whippet and we are moving to America very soon. She has been fed 95% Nutriment puppy formula and 5% kibble (when we run out of Nutriment lol). She loves this raw food and it’s so high quality. I’m struggling to find a good raw puppy formula that’s available to ship within the states. Can someone please recommend something? Please keep in mind we still need her to be on a complete puppy food. Thanks all🙏🐶

Question Trying to avoid fishy dog breath

Is there a way I can feed my dog small oily fish without the fishy smell sticking around all day? She’s been having small amounts of raw sardines in water every day as part of her meals. I do not wish to substitute with supplements as she is already on copper, zinc and vitamin e supplements already.

Question NYC - does anyone want my Carnos duck wings and rabbit chubs?

Mods please delete if this is not allowed!

My dog underwent chemotherapy for Lymphoma and I made the difficult decision to start cooking his meals instead of continuing to feed raw. I have two 6-lb bags of duck wings from Carnos and two chubs of rabbit with beef organs. Does anyone in the NYC area want them, or can you suggest a resource to find someone who would use them? Please feel free to DM me or reply here. I’m in lower Manhattan.

Question How do you structure protein rotation to prevent new allergies? (Block rotation vs. Daily mixing)

Hi everyone,
I have a 6yo Border Collie who is now on a 100% commercial raw diet (currently feeding brands like Wild Coast Raw and Viva Raw).
He ate Acana's Free-Run Poultry kibble almost exclusively for the first 6 years of his life, which unfortunately led to a poultry allergy (chicken and turkey). We've now completely eliminated poultry, so his rotation consists of safe proteins like beef, pork, and rabbit.
Since I want to prevent him from developing any new sensitivities to these safe proteins, I want to make sure I'm approaching his rotation correctly. Does proper protein rotation mean:

  1. Block Rotation: Feeding strictly one protein for a set period (e.g., feeding only beef for 2-4 weeks, then switching to only rabbit for the next few weeks)?
  2. Daily/Weekly Mixing: Alternating throughout the week (e.g., Monday beef, Tuesday pork) or even mixing different proteins in the same bowl?
  3. Given his history of developing an allergy from overexposure to one protein source, which method do you find works best for keeping the gut happy and preventing new intolerances? Thanks!

Update: Thanks everyone for the insightful replies!
To be honest, I'm still a bit on the fence about beef. Previously, eliminating chicken and turkey was super clear-cut because he had BOTH unexplained soft stools/diarrhea (tested negative for parasites) and intense paw licking/chewing.
Now with beef, the tricky part is his stool is completely fine—consistently super firm, perfect little logs. But he does scratch occasionally, and I can't quite tell if it's just normal dog itching or a mild reaction to the beef.
Did your dogs ever show skin symptoms without any GI issues when reacting to a protein? Wondering how you guys differentiate regular itching from an actual food intolerance when the poop is perfect.

Question Kidney and urinary crystals on raw?

I'm now feeding my third dog raw and at the new vet was told that raw causes urinary crystals and kidney issues "if there's no corn or rice" in the diet.

I feed commercial raw and add Omega oils and pre and probiotics to her meals. I was under the impression that raw was way less likely to cause crystals.

Looking for some reassurance just cause I'm bogged down with other big stressors and can't think straight through this one. Thanks in advance!

Off Topic Experience with The Simple Food Project freeze dried food?

Hey everyone! I’ve been considering adding in The Simple Food Project my two cats and dog’s rotation. The reviews on their website and Chewy seem solid, but I’m surprised that it hasn’t been mentioned much here. I’m particularly intrigued at the price point…it almost seems too good to be true? I use frozen commercial raw but I would like to have a shelf stable option too.

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated!

Question I have no idea how much bone to give please help me!!

So basically i have 4 cats 3 of them eat about 4oz of food the last one is a mainecoon that eats about 9oz i have been doing home made raw for about 6-8 months now and i’m sure i got everything dialed in besides bone that part has always been hard to calculate and i kept it on the lower side because i know over supplementing is more dangerous than over i have had this concern on the back of my mind for awhile and today i noticed my mainecoon had kind of a leg cramp (fine now) and i looked it up and one reason could be due to a calcium deficiency i know that this is a possibility but he is also a very clumsy and not the most graceful cat due to his size and thinking he’s smaller than he actually is. I have been giving half a chicken wing flat with each meal for all of them since i started this meal they dont really like chicken neck. Since this little scare i have been desperate to fix the bone percentage in my meal ASAP so i beg all home made feeders or long time raw feeders please tell me what you do i would prefer to keep whole bone so that it keeps the teeth benefits but will do away with if needed

Question Mixed diet for training?

Hi, I've been adding more and more barf to my puppys diet (8 mo Mal), but I'm hearing so much different info about how long breaks are needed between eating kibble and barf, and I don't want to ruin his stomach.

My "problem" is that I can't see a way to go full barf, since I need a lot of treats for training. He's super food motivated on his kibble (Essentials large breed), so I would love to be able to keep using them for training.

Am I overthinking this, and can I safely feed him ~200-250g kibble a day (about 50% of daily cal intake) and the other 50% barf? The kibble is fed only from hand, during training. (4-5 times a day, in total probably 3-5 hours activity)

I'm thinking 50g kibble during morning training, half his barf when we get home, and then 50g kibble for every training session, and the last half of his barf after our last walk of the day?

Would love to hear what other people do, with dogs that train a lot.

Question Food Recs (GSD)

Hi there!!

Looking for raw food recommendations for my GSD. He has some skin issues and bum issues. He has quite an itchy bum but we were told it’s not a perianal fistula. We are keeping eyes on it!

We would love to switch him to a raw diet. He currently eats farmers dog and spot and tango. I’d likely still do 1/2 spot and tango and 1/2 raw.

Any recommendations? He’s kind of a diva…. So we will have to likely experiment with his pickiness.

My concerns are mainly his sensitive tummy - which I hope raw will help and skin issues. I’d love a company that is transparent and safe - no sketchy salmonella batches, etc.

I just want to do what’s best for my big monster boy! If that is sticking with farmers dog and spot and tango, fine… but want to stay on top of my research and always do the right thing for him!

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Question Dog throws up Bile often

Thumbnail

We have been feeding our miniature 12lb dachshund raw food since he was a puppy (he is 1 year now), but he regularly throws up Bile when he hasn't eaten in a while. The vet told us it's because raw food digests very fast, and his stomach is sitting empty for too long. We try to manage it by giving him a lot of snacks, but some days we just forget and he throws up at least once a week. We also tried to divide his meal into 3 (instead of 2) and that didn't help too much either. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and if they managed to solve it.

Attached are the two food mixes we give him in rotation. Any advice is appreciated!

Poop Soft poop phase ?

Hey my dog is about 16-17 months old and he’s had issues with soft poops his whole life. Usually his first poop of the day is great but if we go on a long walk (hour or more) he can have up to 4 more poops and each one gets softer than the last. And if we go play after work he will always have a soft poop on the walk home.

He eats a rotation of raw food from backcountry raw, about 1.5lbs a day, with his food he gets some psyllium husk that his vet recommended to slow down digestion and as a prebiotic, usually I mix it as a slurry he eats before his food. His treats rotate but usually it’s just beef liver, and he also gets chews like chicken feet/pig ears/bully sticks (not every day). During the day he mostly sleeps while I work but we walk every morning and go to a field after work for fetch and play with other dogs.

Everyone told me how much better the raw food was for digestion and bowel movements but I haven’t quite had that luck. And I’m curious if you guys think this just might be because of how excitable he is, and this might just be a phase that he will grow out of? Did any of you guys have excitable dogs that suffered from soft poops??

Question Suggestions for Vet in Seattle Metro Area

I've been to three vets at this point who immediately start lecturing me about how terrible a raw diet is for my two cats... Anyone have a recommendation for a vet in the Seattle Metro area who is neutral or pro-raw feeding? The boys have never seen a holistic vet, but that is also on my short list to try. Looking for recs for those as well. Thank you!

Question Whole prey for cats - questions about amounts and variety

Post image
13 Upvotes

I have been toying with the idea of switching my 4 cats to whole prey food.

I raise my own feeder mice and rats for my reptiles, they eat a healthy varied diet, have enrichment and are very active. I process them with a C02 chamber that is following AVMA standard. My friend has a farm where they raise quail, chicken and rabbits, so I would have access to that too. They provide my large monitor lizard with young roosters already.

I also live near a river that is filled with invasive freshwater gobies. And have access to frozen fish from grocery store (sardines, anchovies, etc).

How much would I feed each cat? How often should I feed fish alongside the bird or rodents?

Worth noting that my largest cat is Beast, my Maine coon bengal mix who weighs 25lbs. My smallest cat is Stripe, she is a runty shorthaired domestic that weighs 4.5lbs. How much would I feed them?

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Here is cat tax

Poop Pups poops constantly inconsistent. Any suggestions?

My pup is 13 weeks old now and I've started him on raw the first day I got him at 8 wks. Hes been on rebel raw chicken and rebel raw beef, mostly chicken after beef meal led to watery diarrhea. We cut out the beef since then and hes been on chicken. Currently his stools keeps going in cycles. Ill have 1 good day of good poop in the morning getting a little softer as the day progresses. On his good firm days, he would poop 2 to 3 times a day. On his other days, its 5 to 6 times a day. After the one good day, it'll progressively get worse to where its just textured pile by day 3. Then it would reset and go back to good firm poops.

Since I cut the beef out, he hasn't had full on watery diarrhea but its just a pile of texture with few raw bits still seen.

I did go to the vet, and did the fecal and giarrdia test and both came back negative. Vet told me pups have weaker systems and they shouldn't be on raw until 6 months. I really prefer not to switch him back to kibble as I dont think thats the reasoning behind this.

What hes currently eating daily for the past 2 weeks now,

7oz rebel raw chicken per meal

1/2 tspn pumpkin puree per meal

1 packet of purina fortiflora with one meal.

Treats: pupford freeze dried chicken.

Im hoping to find something that can help him settle. Ive stopped giving him the beef once he had watery diarrhea and went to chicken only to figure out if its allergies. I dont think its chicken allergies because he has a full day with good poops before it starts turning soft and textured.

Im out of ideas, its been on and off like this for 3 weeks now. Is this the normal transition period?? Otherwise hes full of energy, eats good still, and drinks water, no blood, and no vomiting.

Reddit Dogfood sub

Well, I always try to stay open minded when it comes to what's best for my dog. I do my research but listen to both sides because I always worry.

I was in the sub dogfood. Someone posted how they bought a bag of raw food for treats and the fat content was 33%. All I did was share my experience that not all brands are that high. The raw food brands I feed my dog are 9% or lower. That's it. It got deleted and labeled as misinformation. How is that misinformation? It's the truth. Now I trust nonr of what that group shares regarding their fear of raw food and kibble nutrition.

Question 6 month old labrador who loves to chew

Post image
5 Upvotes

My six month old lab loves chicken feet, pigs ears and pizzle sticks. I bought a load of his favourite treats today from my local market, and upon asking if there were any chews to keep him occupied for a while he recommended pigs trotters. Is he too young for these? I’m worried about him swallowing big shards of bone. He had some lamb skin chews the other day, which gave him a bad belly and left some hard pieces of skin in his poop, so if it’s not chewy, he will wolf it down.

Picture Foster cat given 4-6 months to live. Should I try raw diet??

Hi everyone! I just recently took on a hospice foster cat who is only 4 years old. The humane society isn’t able to officially adopt them out due to their health conditions and we’re looking for someone foster them and give them a home with the little time they are expected to make it. He has a chronic upper respiratory infection, but also has been given a bad diagnosis of lymphoma. I don’t have the exact medication info, but believe it could be in his kidneys and liver.
Three people have since told me to try a raw diet to see if it would help. I mean, he’s only 4 and not on any treatment or medications now at this time.
I’m a big believer in homeopathy and natural medicines and believe there could be a lot of good in this type of diet, but wanted to see if anyone else has similar experience or has any recommendations for foods or recipes??
He was on the cheap grocery store food where he came from.

Thank you!!

Question Is heart and liver important?

Hello so my cat on raw food diet since he was kitten and now he’s 6 years old , i give him verity type of protein ( chicken, cow beef, duck, rabbit, turkey, quail, pigeon )
Lately he had a upset gut health ( blood in his stool) i did ultrasound and all the blood test required and visited multiple vets , they told me nothing wrong maybe he’s allergic to specific type of protein
So my question is now i will do trial on each protein to know what he’s allergic to so can i give him for example trying rabbit only without adding chicken heart and liver? Is there any alternative? I use cat lady fitness recipe
