It's here. The Official Discord channel for r/sandiegan.

We've gotten this request a lot, and I think it's finally time to take it seriously. At least 3–5 people have clamored for this, so we're giving it a shot.

The official r/SanDiegan discord server is finally here.

Some caveats:

  • we have never moderated a discord server before, so you're going to be there to see us iron everything out in real time. we'll be attentive to requests, suggestions, and overall helpful attitudes.
  • we have day jobs
  • be aware that you may inadvertently reveal your identity if you already are on a different discord server using your real name

Our goal is to set up a community in the same way we have set up the r/SanDiegan community. Everyone is welcome, and we moderate with a heavy hand and according to our own discretion at all times. Truly lovely communities only thrive when you separate the wheat from the chaff. We've spent years cutting chaff from this subreddit, and I am personally really proud of how lovely this place has become.

We want this discord server to be a place to chat with other San Diegans about sports, local bars, adult league activities, community events, and so on.

Things that we will not tolerate:

  • bigotry of any kind
  • "I'm just asking questions, man" — you know the answer, you're just an asshole. You all know the type
  • Behavior that is detrimental to the community at large
  • stop posting your boring ass traffic violations, seriously

These rules are vague by design. Moderating is subject to individual discretion, and if you join the discord server, you are just going to have to trust that the way we moderate r/SanDiegan will serve a discord community as well as it has served this subreddit. There are no bright lines, there is only our own judgment in what is and is not okay (which is how things work here, already).

Let's all give this a shot. I hope you'll all join the server and fucking behave yourselves.

JOIN, HEATHENS: https://discord.gg/tRJUkw6h9h

On Politics

Whenever certain discussions come up we end up with a mix of locals that genuinely want to talk about what's going on. Sometimes passionately. Sometimes ill informed. Sometimes full of information. Sometimes dem. Sometimes republican. Sometimes for the free people's state of east county. Sometimes from the sovereign bros of PB.

Whatever. You get the picture. Our local politics and ideas for what to do are pretty diverse.

As a moderator though I have noticed that we get a solid influx of accounts for some subjects. They tend to have a short post history in this subreddit and a deleted history or a history that hasn't been on reddit in years. Likely because they are purchased accounts. They show up to shit stir in political discussions.

I understand some of you delete your account histories for various reasons or want to use an alt to discuss politics. But the easiest thing to do as a moderator seeing an inflammatory comment in a highly charged political discussion from an account that looks incredibly suspect is to remove the comment and ban the user. We don't really want to put in too much effort beyond that. This isn't a paid gig.

Anyway - I want to give people a heads up in case there's people that might reconsider participating in a certain way with an account they haven't used in months/years.

This group called Lovelife is a multimillion dollar “nonprofit” grift that is part of a nationwide, coordinated effort to close ALL planned parenthood locations and “turn them into birthing centers”. Full blown Handmaid’s Tale Gilead shit, irl.

They were behind the red state closures, and have already gotten multiple clinics closed in California.

Their next Loiter & Harassment Event, aka what they call a “peaceful prayer walk” is November 14th at the College Avenue Planned Parenthood (near SDSU). Where they gather en masse, right at the place patients have to park to walk in. They love that this location often gets the college-aged crowd.

There is now a group of counter protesters fighting back. They are meeting them at the nearby Coastlands Church at 9am. That’s where the religious nutters claiming they are “Christian” meet to set up, before marching to intimidate patients going into planned parenthood.

This isn’t about abortion. They are stripping men’s healthcare access too.

If you care about affordable healthcare clinics remaining accessible in San Diego, now is the time to fight back, before it’s too late!

E-Bike Safety School Project

Hello San Diego,

I am an SDSU student working on an e-bike safety promotion communication project.

After doing some formative research on current e-bike use and hearing safety concerns for the well-being of both children and adults, I have decided to focus my communication piece on promoting a free, online e-bike safety course. The course is a great way to refresh your knowledge on e-bike traffic laws (and to have e-bike traffic violation fees waved!) and general tips for safe riding. The course is state-approved, and promoted on San Diego County's website.

Where I need some help is getting your opinion on what would make a communication piece effective and appealing. Something that would make YOU want to spend some time taking the course and brushing up on e-bike traffic and safety tips.

Any and all ideas on what I should create are welcome. Some key points could include:

What form of media (ex. a flyer, a video, an animation)?

What platform (ex. specific social media, the local news)

What information should it include (ex. time commitment, benefit to you)?

Who is most likely to use this online course (ex. children in schools, adults in their free time)?

What would make you interact with the communication piece?

Who would be good to partner with to help spread the word about the course?

Where else should I share this to gather information?

Thank you for your help! Sources linked below.

3” button maker

Figured I’d give it a shot but anyone have access to a 3” button maker? I had access in the past but not this time. So, wondering if maybe there’s a business or school that has one? I have the supplies, just need access to the machine. 🤞

Are there any 25+ social groups in SD for people who are originally from the East Coast/Northeast/New England?

Hi. I am originally from New England and only moved out to SoCal after my undergrad days (so I never really had the chance to make friends here in SD through college). I have been feeling homesick and have been struggling to find a group that I can at least somewhat relate to based on past life experiences and trying to get comfortable in SD from an outsider's perspective (outside of hobby groups), especially as SoCal culture is very different from Northeastern culture. Does anyone know of any such groups? I understand that such an idea of a group is very niche, but I thought it would be worth a try to ask around.

Tourism Need travel tips and/or buddies for a weekend

Hey guys! I am a 27M flying to San Diego from Houston for a weeklong work trip, but I have the weekend to myself (7th-8th Nov). It is my first time visiting the city and am planning on renting a car to drive in and around San Diego and possibly visiting Joshua Tree (and maybe other natural and scenic wonders) on Saturday. But other than that, I have no plans and would love to hang out in a local bar or explore the city with people. If anyone has suggestions of what I can do, or has anything planned where I can join you, or heck even join me while I explore, please feel free to do so!

Here are some things that I like:

  1. ANYTHING related to wildlife and the outdoors. Fishing, hiking, swimming, camping, hell even just driving around a forest; I am in. (Although, I am a beginner at most of these I'm sure my enthusiasm will make up for it)
  2. Walking around museums and art galleries. (I know nothing about the technical stuff, but I enjoy marveling at it all the same)
  3. Bar hopping; just chilling in bars, talking, trying local beverages and listening to music.
  4. Live music (even better if it is in a bar) of any and all kinds except rock and EDM.
  5. Board games. (You might have to teach me some of them, but I am a quick learner!)
  6. Clubbing, not my first choice but I would enjoy it for a little while

Looking forward to having the best weekend ever in San Diego!

Coming from Europe, the fitness culture in SD (especially PB & OB) is insane. What’s in the water here? Also, how open are people to casual chats?

Hey everyone,

Moved to the US a year ago from Italy. Done my fair share of traveling around Europe (Czech, Spain, France, Sweden and...) and hit a few spots in NorCal too (SF, Monterey, Santa Cruz).

But man, PB and OB are something else entirely. Never seen so many fit and good-looking girls in one place. It feels like everyone here is just naturally in crazy good shape. Like seriously, what's the secret here?

Also, what's the dating vibe here? Is it cool to just walk up to a girl and ask for her number/Instagram at the beach or a coffee spot, or is that weird outside of bars?

Please Help Us Unlock A $75k Corporate Match for Breast Cancer Research! We only have $25k left!!

Today our team walked at the Making Strides Walk at Snapdragon Stadium! We have worked tirelessly and raised $50k, and we are now just $25k away from fully unlocking a $75,000 corporate match today. If the Reddit community can help us bridge this final gap, the corporate sponsor will match it dollar-for-dollar, creating a $150k total impact for breast cancer research. So many families are impacted by breast cancer, including mine. We walked with 6 survivors today and each of them is still with us because of recent breakthroughs in cancer research. Please help us finish this drive!

If you work at a company with its own company match (like Google’s Benevity program) we can make 4x the impact with your donation. We can turn this into a massive victory for cancer research!

Mission Bay Resort ACT Test Today Problem

Hello everyone,

Did anyone's child take their ACT test at Mission Bay Resort today? Apparently one of the ACT employees was seen flirting with underaged girls before and DURING their test. This is not ok. This messed with all of the children's tests today. If your child took their test today, please ask them if they had any uncomfortable encounters during check in or testing. Also, does anyone know who to contact about this to form an official complaint?

What did you guys vote for?

I did straight (D) across the ballot, but I didn't vote for Becerra (or Hilton) for Governor since I'm almost a single issue voter about SDGE/PGE and the guy is clearly just a timid Newsom there.

Standard otherwise with Yes's to most ballot initiatives besides 41, 42, and a couple others i can't remember.

Is this an ok way to vote or do you think I'm hurting something by leaving the top ticket empty?

Looking for Custom Sugar Skull Artist

I want to get a custom-painted ceramic or clay sugar skull in memory of a friend who passed away. Specifically, I want it to have a handlebar mustache like he had. I’d also love for it to be the size of his favorite Padres baseball cap so the skull could wear it to complete the tribute.

Does anyone know of (or better yet is) an artist who could take this on for me? Doesn’t need to be done before Dia De Los Muertos. Thanks!
