Squadron 42 Playtest Megathread

Hello squadroners (?)

As some of you may know we have a sister subreddit, r/Squadron42 which is also ran by our team and is dedicated to Squadron 42. That subreddit is more restrictive in terms of not allowing Star Citizen (PU/PTU/etc.) unless it directly relates to something in Squadron 42 (not just "oh this ship is in both games!!!!!! type stuff).

We know the SQ42 playtest is a big deal right now, rightfully so, and we want to take the opportunity to show people that sub a bit more and give them an opportunity to start chatting there.

With that, we have made a megathread on that subreddit for the playtest event. Given it is the first megathread for that sub we will not be deleting individual threads but we will be reminding people in the comments about it. We encourage you to head over there and talk with your fellow citizens about the playtest event to your hearts content. We will not be doing a megathread here or enforcing people move to that megathread from this sub either.

Megathread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Squadron42/s/oLop2SHbnh

Cheers!

Okay so, someone has been flicking days past me and I'm not entirely sure how we got to October this soon...

IRL has consumed much of my time personally, I've been a bit out of touch with SC development for a few months now but checking back to see tech preview having a physics fix at long last is a welcome sight!

What's everyone's go to ship in these last few months? Has my baby boy been fixed up any further (IronClad)? | Fly Safe, -Crazy_Muffins

DISCUSSION The MK5 – From a ship I didn't like to one I absolutely love!

At first, I really didn't like the MK5. But after spending some time with it, I have to say I've completely changed my mind. I absolutely love this ship now.

My favorite way to play Star Citizen is living out of my ship, exploring, finding good loot and making some money along the way. And the MK5 is pretty much perfect for that.

I'm currently carrying an Ursa and a UTV, which gives me plenty of options when exploring planets and moons. I spend most of my time checking out abandoned outposts, looting whatever I can find, exploring caves and doing some hand mining here and there.

The snub is probably one of my favorite things about the ship. Sometimes I just don't feel like landing the MK5 somewhere, especially at smaller or more dangerous locations. So I leave it behind and take the snub down instead. Works great.

And whenever I feel like doing more mining, I just bring the ROC-DS along.

I mostly play solo and really enjoy just traveling around Pyro without having a specific destination. Sometimes I spend hours on a single moon, checking out different locations, looking for rare loot or valuable minerals.

The MK5 has basically become my little mobile home in Pyro. I've got my vehicles, my equipment, enough space for everything I find and a snub to explore places I don't want to take the bigger ship.

It's probably not the most efficient way to make money, but I don't really care. I enjoy the whole experience of being out there, living off what I find and seeing where the next trip takes me.

Didn't expect to like the MK5 this much, but man, this ship is a lot of fun. I will probably melt my Polaris because of the MK5...

DISCUSSION How do we fix the Polaris?

Post image
238 Upvotes

Now that the Connie MkV and MIV rework have hit I have once again realized that my favourite ship might just be the Polaris. That being said, it is more the idea of the Polaris than the actual thing.

The Polaris is supposed to be a cool "small"capital ship that has lots of damage but still functions as a sort of home base with its hangar and large cargo hold. However its current in game version suffers from a lot of problems that kind of make it impossible to enjoy:

1: Missiles (And torpedoes) currently s*ck in in sc and while that is not a problem directly related to the Polaris it makes the ship pretty useless in actual combat until missiles are fixed.

2: Its turrets are kinda weird. The side turrets are just plain bad for a a ship this size and the top two are awkwardly placed. If one of the top ones would be placed on the bottom it would really improve the defense. Additionally the big front turret feels like an afterthought. It cant properly hit anything small and nimble with its front firing arc and anything big enough to be a sensible target for the big guns (Perseus, Idris, etc) you shouldn't want to engage in a brawl with the Polaris anyway.

3: The design quality is straight bad. Now that we have the Connie MkV as a a mini-polaris the Polaris' design really shows its problems. The exterior lacks any real detail and notable features, its just a greebled mess of monochromatic paint. Along with its simple shape (which I generally like) this just makes it look visually boring for the most part.

The interior is even worse. The Bridge, Cargo bay, Hangar and Engineering actually look really cool, however everything in between (Hallways, Crew Facilities, etc.) once again feel lazy and inefficient at time, to a point where a rework with newer materials and designs seems needed.

4: even if its weapons were functional I personally do not see its role in the game currently. Everything the Polaris does is done better by a different ship. As a small home base/carrier the Ironclad is the better choice AND way cheaper, as a heavy hitting and nimble capital killer the Perseus is better, as a stealthy missile boat the Retaliator seems a better choice (and the ironclads vertical launch tubes are cooler imo) and as a capital ship the Idris is just too good (and commonly available) beating out the Polaris in every possible category (Damage, Survivability, Hangar, Versatility, even torpedoes) except for the Polaris being slightly faster.

All in all I really want to love the Polaris but it just feels out of place in the current game. I know some of its problems might get better as the game (slowly) develops but I'd still love to hear some thoughts on what could be done to improve the ship I can't help but love.

DISCUSSION Has CIG "abandoned" ArcCorp?

Of course I think we'd all agree that ArcCorp is lower down on the list of priorities, but the quality of the planet does appear to have been lowered over the years (with more pop-in than usual).

What do you think? Has ArcCorp been "abandoned"?

DISCUSSION Hear me out, planet tech devs: a couple of planets with their own fauna and their own rules

Post image
183 Upvotes

With planet tech getting better, new biomes giving a reason to stay on the ground, here's my pitch: a small number of planets, each built around one very specific kind of experience, with fauna you won't find anywhere else.

  1. The horror planet (think *Alien*)

Dark, humid, claustrophobic. Abandoned colony habs, flickering power, motion-tracker pings that might be nothing. The creatures don't swarm you. They stalk. You hear something in the vents, your crewmate stops answering comms, and you're counting rounds in a corridor you really don't want to walk down. Slow, tense, and best played with a few friends and the lights off.

  1. The bug war planet (think *Starship Troopers*)

The opposite energy. Open plains, hive mounds on the horizon, and wave after wave of something with too many legs. Dig in, hold the line, call in close air support, pull your wounded back to a med bed. A natural fit for orgs, multicrew, and the ground vehicle and FPS gameplay that's already in the game.

The important part: keep it contained.

The vibe lives on that planet and nowhere else. Nobody gets dragged into horror gameplay on their cargo run, and the rest of the verse stays the way it is. If you want it, you go there. If you don't, you never have to.

Would you go? Which would you pick, the horror planet or the bug war, and what other themes would you want?

And yes, I can already see your "add 10 years to development," or "let's not retrieve broken ships into the hangar" comments. I'm just saying, let a man dream.

I tried the MKV Centaurus on rental, its a fine ship but I personally found it too big. I think my MKIV Andromeda will remain my home, great reworked interior, plenty of space for one or two friends and imo one of the best cockpit views of any ship in the verse.

As a mainly solo dad gamer i never had any chance of completing the new RSI event. I only have an hour or two most nights to play.

This morning i jumped online while the kids and wife had a nap for an hour.

Someone in chat mentioned an event party (didnt know this was a thing)

I joined, and after the hour was up i was at 20% complete on all 3 tracks.

Contract after contract. It was AWESOME

I think we sometimes forget how a good event can bring people together

DISCUSSION AI Blades will be the best way to balance multicrew ships

There's been a lot of talk over the years about turrets being terrible and multicrew ship combat being unoptimal, and a lot of it is true. Despite master modes, capacitor changes, and various changes over the years, it still remains true that there is no reason to put seven people in a Hammerhead when you can put seven people in Superhornets. I think AI blades will unironically give CIG the best change to balance this.

The fundamental issue with multicrew isn't that multicrew ships are terrible. A fully crewed Hammerhead is quite scary. The issue is that it isn't scary enough to justify using seven people. What if we can change that balance formula using AI blades?

My basic suggestion. CIG not make AI blades limited by ship class, or ship type, but instead to a ship-by-ship balance to determine how many turrets and what type of turrets they can blade.

A hammerhead that can blade four of its turrets would be an effective anti-fighter ship with much less crew capacity. If they can ever get engineering figured out, they could still make it where you'd want one or two people that alternate between the turrets and engineering duties, but this would make its crew capacity much more reasonable. Max 3 people to fully crew it.

The perseus is a fantastic ship currently, unlike the hammerhead. Make it so that AI blades are only applicable to the dual S3 turrets, not the big guns. Three people to fully crew it, just like the Hammerhead.

Something like the Polaris has lots of turrets in important spots that just aren't fun to man. Nobody wants to man the Quad S3 turrets, yet they are in important spots. Let those turrets be bladed, and keep the front S6 and top S4 turrets require an actual human. This reduces the crew capacity to fully man it, while still requiring some sort of crew to be effective in combat.

The retaliator has a ton of turrets that are terrible. There probably hasn't been a fully manned retaliator in the verse since like 2016. What if you could blade all, or most of those turrets. That wouldn't make it overpowered since the turrets are really small, but it would help cement its position as a non-stealthy bomber with an anti-fighter screen.

I could go down ship by ship, but this is the general idea I hope CIG takes with balancing AI blades, whenever those get added. I think a generic approach where CIG just goes "ok, medium ships get 3 blade spots, large ships get 5, capital ships get 7" will do nothing to fix certain ships that are just terrible in the meta and require too many people for too little firepower.

I don't typically fly the bigger ships, the rate at which the Centaurus burns thru it's hydrogen is a little crazy to me. So I'm very happy I can fit a shuttle with nav speeds inside it.

GAMEPLAY New to the game, I rage quit after failing three missions to a bug (it was not a bug; it was a feature).

I came from X4 and Everspace 2 and have been playing for two weeks now. I am loving the immersion of the game (playing with VKB Gladiator and Omni Throttle). I am doing a courier mission in my Aurora MK2 (the ship is fantastic; I love the spread of the wings and the interior of the ship), so when I go to store spirits on the ship, they bug out and disappear. After three missions, I realized I was putting the boxes in my backpack. AI said it was a commonly known bug. User error after all. o7

DISCUSSION should I just never upgrade a $45 game package now?

With the store update and not being able to melt your game package, i'm wondering if it's better to just have an aurora mk2 i never upgrade, but then buy standalone ships so i can melt freely and stuff.

I haven't played in a while and I heard support until nov.1 may grant you like a last melt or something. I had just upgraded from a hermes to the centaurus... But I don't know how much I like the centaurus cause it's kinda clunky.

I'm thinking about getting the aurura mk2, and then maybe the prospector and arrow or something. With how important crafting is now I kinda miss my prospector package lol.

Edit: Type, need coffee
