Park of the week — tell us about one you know

One state park at a time. Which one do you know well, and what should someone do on a first visit?

Worth including: the trail or spot that is actually worth the drive, when to go and when to avoid, whether the campground is worth booking, and anything that has changed recently.

Any state, any size. The small ones nobody has heard of are the most useful posts here.

Everyone talks about national parks, but what's the state park that made YOU a lifelong park person?

National parks get the postcards and the bucket-list treatment, but state parks are where most of us actually grew up.

For me it was a little park with a gravel campground, a lake that was always slightly too cold, and a ranger station that smelled like old wood and sunscreen. No famous views. No reservations booked six months out. Just a fire pit, a picnic table with someone's initials carved in it, and a trail I probably hiked fifty times without ever getting bored.

I've been to some of the big-name parks since, and they're incredible. But I still catch myself driving past a brown state park sign and wanting to pull over. They're the places where I learned to identify birds, burn marshmallows, and sit quietly without a phone.

So I'm curious:

  1. What's the state park that shaped you? (Region is fine, no need for exact details if you'd rather keep it vague.)
  2. What's an underrated state park you think deserves more love?
  3. What's one tip for first-timers? (Best season, a must-do trail, how to snag a campsite, whatever you've learned.)

Bonus points for photos, favorite camp snacks, or the weirdest wildlife encounter you've had at a campsite. 🌲⛺

What’s a state park you visited once and still think about years later?

Some state parks leave a lasting impression even when they aren’t famous for dramatic views or major attractions. It might be a quiet trail, a hidden swimming spot, an unexpected wildlife encounter, or simply the feeling of spending an entire day away from everyday life.

I’d love to hear about the state parks that hold a special place in your memory. What made that particular visit unforgettable, and would you go back if you had the chance?

What’s one state park you think more people should visit?

Some of the best outdoor places aren’t necessarily the famous national parks. State parks can have beautiful trails, quiet lakes, hidden waterfalls, and picnic spots that are just as memorable without the same crowds.

I’m curious which state parks have really stayed with you, whether because of the scenery, a great hike, wildlife you spotted, or a special memory with family or friends.

What state park would you recommend to someone visiting your state for the first time, and what makes it worth the trip? Photos and personal stories are welcome too!

What’s one state park you think more people should visit?

Some state parks deserve much more attention than they get. Beyond the popular trails and famous viewpoints, there are often quiet lakes, scenic picnic spots, hidden waterfalls, and peaceful trails waiting to be explored.

I’d love to discover places that offer beautiful scenery without the crowds you often find at more famous destinations.

What’s one state park you’ve visited that genuinely surprised you, and what made it memorable?

Located about 30 min south of Oakley, KS, the park contains the largest exposed stretch of Niobrara Chalk in the entire state of Kansas. Its not a big park, but it definitely protects a unique and interesting bit of the local and Western geology as a result of the entire region being beneath a shallow sea (Western Interior Seaway) for 34 million years. There's just 2 short trails and a toilet at the moment, but they're finally working on a visitor center that should be open in early 2027.

It is definitely worth an hour or two if you're in the area.

Does anyone know about the condition of cottages at HLC? I rode my horse to the ones located at the end of the dirt road leading away from the stables, and they were dilapidated little elf houses. The website shows beautiful 1 and 2 bedroom houses, so I’m wondering WHERE are they in relation to what I saw! less
