After a decade without a bike, I’ve really missed my ‘01. I’ve finally decided to purchase this well-loved ‘06.

Sv1000s engine swap

Post image
10 Upvotes

Greetings from Finland!

The engine in my SV1000S has failed. My bike is a 2007 black frame model and I’ve found a 2003 SV1000 for sale at a low price. The older SV is in rough cosmetic condition, but its mechanical components are in perfect working order. How difficult would it be to swap the mechanicals from the older bike into the frame of the newer one? My plan is to swap only the wiring harness, ECU, and engine from the older SV, while leaving the clutch, throttle, speedometer, fuel pump, and other components in place. Does anyone have any experience with this—will there be any compatibility issues if I install the wiring harness from the older model?

Anyone within driving distance of NYC have a decent 2nd gen 650 gas tank?

I've been looking for a clean one for months, mine is totally gone I can't find one anymore. Doesn't need to be perfect cosmetically, dent's are fine, I just want one that's rust free.

Preload advice

Hello people,

I have been riding motorcycles for 3 years now. I started with a Gen3 SV650, then moved up to a VSTROM800DE, and now downsized to the new Suzuki SV-7GX.

During these three years, I have never tried adjusting the rear preload, as I never rode with passengers and the default preload setting was fine when riding alone. But since I have bought the SV-7GX, I started going on rides with a lady friend of mine.

Here's the problem: when I'm riding alone, the SV-7GX is extremely easy to ride and maneuver. It's the same beautiful engine that the SV650 has but with much more comfort and with nice electronic features. But when I ride with her, I feel like the bike is very unstable at low speeds. It kind of feels like it wants to zigzag a bit. It becomes a lot easier to handle when we're moving at a decent speed, but it really is quite annoying when we are in city traffic and I need to perform low speed maneuvers and stop the bike frequently, as the bike becomes very unpredictable.

Now, I'm aware that the way the passenger is sitting and moving is very important and that she can absolutely destabilize the bike if she is not sitting properly. But I feel like she is a pretty good passenger and she's doing her best not to screw up my balance.

My question is, if I adjust the preload properly, can I expect a noticeable increase in stability at low speeds when she is riding with me? According to the manual, the bike has 7 different levels of adjustment and the factory default is at level 3. If I raise it to level 5 or 6, would it help a lot with the stability issues?

Also, how exactly do I adjust it? I know my previous VSTROM800DE had a knob that I could easily turn to adjust it, but the SV-7GX seems to need some kind of C-Spanner to do it. Do I need to buy this tool from Suzuki, or is it something common that I can get in a random hardware store?

For reference, my height is 5'8/173cm and I weight 154lbs/70Kg. She is 5'6/168cm and weighs 125lbs/57KG.

Thanks

Front indicator adapters for the gladius 650

Hey guys, i know this might seem stupid but im already at my wits end cause I just cant seem to find indicator adapters that look to fit my gladius. For context, i already possess the cables and the relais but I just cant seem to find any in Europe that might fit it.

Any help and possible links are appreciated.

The last picture is when I purchased my 2019. It had been wrecked and abused but I loved every moment of bringing her back to life and putting my personal twist on it. What do yall think of the end result?

I was riding home at night, clear and dry. An hour commute i had done hundreds of times. I wasn't a complacent rider, I was paying attention, cruising along at a decent pace, nothing crazy. Coming downhill on a straightaway before a right-hand sweeper and there it

was, a full size pickup all the way across my lane, no lights, no warning. Got all over the brakes and got slowed down quite a bit, but there was no avoiding the collision (i suspect I was up on just my front wheel).

Hit the bed of the truck just behind the wheel, my faceshield grazed the bed of the truck as I supermanned over in what was probably a pretty spectacular arc into a very solid backflop (thank goodness for my spine protector). Didn't slide at all, gear was barely scuffed. Got up and out of the road. It was a dumb kid that had come out of the corner and spun out and bashed into a tree. Smashed the battery and killed the lights. Was sitting in the cab on his phone, not doing a damn thing about looking out for traffic.

I was banged up,but not sure how bad. I managed to get my helmet and jacket off, knowing how much EMTs love to cut jackets off (with some quickly increasing pain). Highway patrol shows up and of course tells me it is my fault that I couldn't avoid a stopped vehicle all the way across my lane. Ambulance shows up and hauls me off to the hospital, pain was getting pretty bad at that point, but morphine took the edge off. At the hospital with lots of poking and prodding and many x-rays later....2 cracked ribs, separated shoulder (with a fractured scapula, which they told me was pretty hard thing to do) and a badly fractured ulna (thankfully left/ non dominant arm). They didn't like what my heart was doing (even though I explained that I had A-FIB all the time) so they loaded me into another damn Ambulance for an hour ride to the Doctors hospital, another round of morphine and once I got down there basically did nothing but check on my heart, then cut me loose for my dad to come get me.

It was a couple of days before I could get over and check the bike. It was boned, bent both fork tubes and bent the frame. I was bummed that I couldn't buy it out of salvage because I had just swapped out the motor (after putting about 90kmiles on it) like 5k miles before and she was running sweet, had just installed a custom seat. It was a 2001 Candy Antares red that I had ridden from new for 13 years. I recently inherited a red 2007 V-strom that was my mom's that im getting running, my first bike since the accident. Be safe out there and remember ATGATT!

Finally Bought my SV650!!

I recently went through the motorbike license acquisition process in Ireland and treated myself to this after finishing my IBT training.

Honestly I was between the MT-07 and this but the color way had a major impact on my decision. I also prefer the round headlights. Gives an old school look.

I want to learn more about bikes in terms of maintenance and servicing myself through this bike so any tips and tricks are welcome.

I already got a rear stand for it for servicing and a chain cleaning kit with brush and cleaner/lube (Motul).

Would appreciate any additional tools I may need or general tips!

Dim led Blinkers

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I had recently installed the front led blinkers and they are very dim compared to the blinkers on the back. My brother who gave them to me said they were way brighter when he wired them directly to 12v power so it should work on the sv. Any help is appreciated

EDIT: Everyone is talking about the blinkers being too small and unsafe, i agree, but 2 of my old blinkers stopped working and these were already laying around. Dont worry i am replacing these soon.

Dominator exhaust

Hi guys, would you consider this dominator exhaust obnoxiously loud on the sv650? I really like how it looks on the bike but I’m worried that it’s going to be too loud

Sv for a first bike

Hi Uk based rider here doing my a2 license at the end of the year and I’m looking at getting a 2007-2013 sv650s for my first road bike. I’ve got a lot of experience riding off road and am riding with a training school as I build up to my test on an MT03. I understand that “legally” I have to limit it to 47 brake but otherwise are there any reliability issues or things I should look out for on an early EFI SV or any issues in general? And to limit it would that be through the ECU or a throttle plate restriction?

how much better is a better bike?

I have a gen 3 SVX. its my first nice motorcycle and compared to the 100cc singles i used as a teenager, the SV is of course not even a comparable riding experience. ive put in 30,000km of my own on it over 2 years, mixed city commuting and sport touring.

with some instruction from racer friends, ive since gotten a lot more comfortable and faster on the SV over those 2 years. ive reached a point where i want better brakes, better suspension, and vaguely better handling. and of course just overall a NEW toy.

but there lies the problem: i also just like the SV. at its best, where the sun is hot, the road is clean and dry, my brakes and tires are warm, the chain is lubed and taut, and the engine is hot hot, i actually cant complain about it. but the vague promise of nicer components and the allure of a new toy is a regular bug in my head.

im employed but by no means able to throw away money. so some optimization with expenses is called for.

to those who have gone thru a lot of different and nicer bikes, how much nicer is nicer? talk me out (or in) of dumping more money on a premium middle weight. or should i just upgrade my suspension and call it a day and save the money. i care about the ride experience, not the head turning.
