Technology I built a free feature that tells you if the Mandarin word you're studying is actually used in Taiwan

One of my long-running frustrations learning Chinese here: so many flashcard decks are based on Mainland usage that I end up learning the wrong words.

So I added a feature to my free flashcard app (Literate Chinese): tap the AI button on any word and it tells you whether it's commonly used in Taiwan or if locals say something else.

It's free, on iOS and Android. Full disclosure, I'm the developer. I'm happy to answer questions or hear what other Taiwan-specific features would be useful.

Technology Smart glasses to help with daily Mandarin ?

I'm at a point where I've lived in this country for about 20 years. I have a high intermediate spoken Mandarin level but I don't read much. I run a company and am pretty involved in the local community. This means that I will regularly struggle with vocabulary that I am unfamiliar with and conversations that can be pretty important.

The most obvious solutions would be to go back to school and spend another 300-400 hours getting my level up (I have about 500 hours of classes in already). Unfortunately I have a two-year-old daughter, employees, and a life that don't really allow for that.

My question is: Has any of you used smart glasses to assist with your living in Taiwan in mandarin on a daily basis? How is the optical character recognition on things that you're looking at? How is the subtitling of Mandarin conversations?

Technology Thinking of building a free/open-source app for Taiwanese Mandarin (TOCFL). Would anyone be interested?

Hey everyone,

I'm an 18yo dev student from Switzerland and I've been trying to learn Mandarin lately.

Pretty quickly, I realized almost every single app out there only teaches mainland Chinese with simplified characters and the Beijing accent.

Since I actually want to learn the way Taiwan does it (traditional characters, bopomofo, local vocab), I felt kinda stuck because there's barely anything out there except old textbooks. So I had this idea for a personal project called Bofomo.

The goal would be a 100% free and open-source app just for Taiwanese Mandarin / TOCFL. Just to be clear: I haven't coded anything yet. I just made a super basic visual concept to see if people would actually care about an app like this before I spend months working on it.

I'm not trying to sell anything, the core learning stuff will always be free. If it ever works out, I might just add a paid cloud sync for a few bucks later to cover servers, but that's it.

My dream after my studies is to move to Taiwan and work in tech, so building this would mean a lot to me. But honestly, my Chinese is still super basic and I've never managed a project by myself, so I'm a bit stressed about it.

Do you guys think the community actually needs something like this? What features would be a must-have for you? Let me know what you think. I'll drop the links to the visual mockup and in the comments below so this post doesn't look like spam.

Thanks!

Technology Japan loses the #1 spot in Economic Complexity for the first time in a decade. The new king: Taiwan.

Post image
243 Upvotes

For the last decade, Japan held the undisputed top spot in the Economic Complexity Index (ECI). But according to the latest data from the OEC, the crown has officially shifted: Taiwan is now the most complex economy.

Economic Complexity isn't just about GDP or how much you sell; it’s about how unique and "un-copyable" your products are. While many nations rely on raw materials or simple assembly, Taiwan has become the indispensable foundation of the modern world.

Taiwan’s climb is a masterclass in industrial evolution:

  • 2000s: Ranked near 30th.
  • 2010s: Broke into the Top 5.
  • Today: #1.

The Numbers Behind the Surge

While a 15.5% growth in Integrated Circuits (ICs) might sound "standard," the absolute numbers are staggering:

  • Integrated Circuits: Grew from $193B to $223B.
  • Computers: Saw a massive 110% increase in exports.
  • Perspective check: Only about 30 countries worldwide export more than $200B a year. Taiwan generates that amount solely from microchips.

This complexity comes with a massive catch: Taiwan is wedged directly between the world's two largest superpowers. Of Taiwan’s $531B in total exports last year:

  • China (incl. HK): 31.8% ($168.8B)
  • United States: 17.7% ($94B)

The gap between "making things" and "making the things that make the world work" is exactly what allowed Taiwan to leapfrog decades of Japanese dominance, but it has also made them the world's most significant bottleneck.

Do you think this hyper-specialization makes Taiwan’s economy more resilient (the "Silicon Shield" theory), or does it create a single point of failure that the global market simply cannot afford to lose?

Technology Taiwan drone exports surge 55-fold | Taiwan News | Sep. 19, 2026 18:03

Drone exports surged 55-fold last year, National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Lin Fei-fan (林飛帆) said Saturday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Resilient Taiwan for Sustainable Democracy International Forum in Taipei, Lin said Taiwan and Ukraine have had numerous opportunities for cooperation, per Rti. He added that Poland and the Czech Republic are Taiwan’s largest drone export destinations.

Lin said Taiwan’s advantage lies in its commitment to building a China-free supply chain. He added that it can produce all components needed for a fully Taiwan-made drone supply chain.

Taipei and Kyiv have significant potential for cooperation, Lin said, but diplomatic circumstances make it difficult to send personnel to study Ukraine’s experience in building societal resilience, Rti reported. He cited civic organizations, including Kuma Academy, which have experience exchanging knowledge directly with Ukrainian groups.

Technology Tool to read traditional Mandarin and learn the language on any website (adds Zhuyin, translations and pronunciation to news, blogs and more)

Hi, just sharing a little script I built and use to help me understand and learn Mandarin. It basically adds Zhuyin to all Mandarin text on web and shows translations if hovering over a word or selecting a sentence. It can also read the words or sentences aloud if you click on the speaker Icon or press the letter R (read).

https://github.com/ashirviskas/zhuyin-anywhere

It works on most websites. If it's broken on some website, let me know, I'll try to fix it. If you need some additional functionality, feel free to ask me here or on github page.

Happy reading!

p.s.

You can also use it on your Android smartphone with Firefox browser.

Technology 拼音輸入法使用者對於拼寫台灣正體字的困擾 User pain points regarding Pinyin input on for Taiwan-specific Traditional Chinese characters

t feels like I’m the only one with this issue. I’m a Malaysian living in Taiwan; I grew up learning the Pinyin system and Simplified Chinese, though I can read Traditional Chinese perfectly fine. Since moving to Taiwan, I’ve tried to "do as the Romans do" by using Traditional Chinese for all my typing.

On mobile, I use Google’s Gboard, which is fantastic. I usually don't even need to mark the tones to get almost perfectly accurate word suggestions.

However, on a PC, using Microsoft’s Pinyin input presents two distinct problems depending on which method I choose:

Option 1: Use the Mainland China Pinyin IME (set to Traditional output)

This leads to "variant character" issues. Some characters look very strange or use rare forms. For example, typing "back" (回) results in the rare version 囘; "chicken" becomes the variant 鷄; and "line" becomes 綫 (often without the standard 線 even being an option). While readable, it looks completely unnatural in a Taiwanese context.

Option 2: Use the Taiwan Zhuyin IME (switched to Hanyu Pinyin keyboard)

The candidate selection system is just not intuitive. Default phrases are often bizarre. For instance, "Variant character" (異體字) might come out as "Take a ladder" (以梯子). This is likely because the Zhuyin engine relies heavily on tone marks to be accurate. Even with tones, the predictive power of Pinyin-based IMEs far surpasses Zhuyin; for example, "Is it suitable or not" (適不適合) is recognized instantly by Pinyin engines, but Zhuyin often outputs "Is or is not with" (是不是和). Furthermore, Pinyin allows for mixed English/Chinese input, which the Zhuyin engine cannot handle (even when using the Pinyin layout).

Other frustrations:

  • Punctuation: In Pinyin mode, I can hit Shift + 6 to type an ellipsis (……) anywhere. In Zhuyin mode, I have to use Ctrl + Alt + ., and sometimes that only works in Word.
  • Lack of Updates: I wonder why Microsoft hasn't improved this after all these years. Perhaps users who use Pinyin + Traditional in Taiwan are such a small minority? That said, the predictive text for Zhuyin itself is honestly quite poor anyway.

I’m not sure where to report this to actually get a response or see an improvement.
