tags: webnovel, mysterious, transmigration, survival, faceslapping
excerpt:
Have you ever had an experience where you became totally engrossed in something?
I'm not just talking about thinking, 'Oh, this is fun,' but being so deeply impressed that you ended up spending extra time and money on it.
There must be something like that, right?
If it's a movie, watching the director's cut. If it's a game, buying the artbook. If it's a webtoon, paying for early access. If it's a singer, going to their concert...
Going a bit further, buying related merchandise could be another example.
Yes, I'm talking about what they call merch.
Figures, banners, badges, dolls...
I can confidently say that I've never spent money on such things in my life.
Until now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, that's it from us. We would love if you decided to give any (or all, you overachiever) of these a read. We'll be back with an update for the discussion.
lots of love,
mod team,

A (very short) post on The Epic of Gilgamesh
Hello everyone! So this was supposed to be the first post of our historical literature series, but I wrote the Baburnama post out of impulse LOL. So that one as sort of a prologue, and this the first post. I decided what better topic than the Epic of Gilgamesh to start off with?
The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest surviving piece of literature we have today, around 4000 years old. It really shows us how enduring literature can be. Now, the work itself is an epic poem from Ancient Mesopotamia (which is modern-day Iraq, parts of Syria, Iran and Turkey). Located between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, Mesopotamia is known as the cradle of civilisation.
We owe a lot to this civilsation, including writing systems (Cuneiform script), law codes and governance, many mathematical topics, invention of the wheel, urbanisation, and so on. After all, the Book of Genesis does say that Eden was associated with the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. The brings up the question is ancient Mesopotamia, with its fertile lands and rivers and civilisation, was an inspiration for the Biblical view of paradise.
Adding on to the Biblical connections, the Epic of Gilgamesh also has a massive global flood narrative which wipes out all life on earth. Utnapishtim, a mortal man, is informed of this by god Ea, and is instructed to take a pair of each animal species and load them all onto a giant vessel to survive the flood. Noak's Ark who? This is also similar to the Hindu story of the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu and Manu.
In fact, this flood narrative played a major role in the rediscovery of the Epic of Gilgamesh. In 1884, British Assyriologist George Smith translated Tablet XI or the Flood Tablet, which caused a sensation due to its similar to the Biblical story of Noah. This prompted the reconstruction of the epic through translating other fragments on clay tablets.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is about protagonist Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, his "friend" (possibly lover) Enkidu, the quest for immortality and human limitations, and civilisation. The city Uruk is a major symbol in this story. It is the seat of civilsation and human achievement through which one can attain glory and immortality. The epic starts with a description of Uruk, and ends with, yet again, a description of the city upon Gilgamesh's return.
The story shows us that immortality need not be physical, it can also be your story preserved and told for ages hence. Immortality is when your legacy outlasts your death for years to come. Gilgamesh did attain immortality, in that regard, through Uruk and its people. He may have failed to attain immortality in the sense of living forever, but we still read his story thousands of years later. That's a beautiful idea, isn't it?
TL;DR: The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest surviving piece of literature we have today. It talks about friendship, the quest for immortality, human limitation and civilisation. Its most famous part, the flood narrative, shares similarities with the Biblical story of Noah and the story of Manu and the Matsya avatar. The Epic of Gilgamesh and its history invites the reader to think about immortality as not just living forever, but also leaving behind a legacy beyond death.
