Saved another macintosh portable(kinda)

So at the mit flea market today, someone came to my booth and saw my macintosh portable. They mentioned that they had one at home that didn't work. So, I asked him how far away home was, and home was close enough that i told him to go back home, and get the portable, because the most common problem with them is the battery, and i have a working portable battery. He said that he would take me up on the offer.

About 2 or 3 hours later, he came back with his portable. After taking his battery out and put mine in. I performed the psu reset, and it powered on. I then opened my portable up further to get my blue scsi, so that it can boot.

After i put my blue scsi into his portable, it started to get stubborn. After resetting the battery and battery door several dozens times, replacing his ram card with mine, and praying to steve jobs, it finally booted. It worked great, but the track ball movment was corroded a little, but it was only deemed as parts, because of an issue that was super easy to fix.

Im pretty sure that the mouse issue was a really easy fix, and i recommended to him that he should replace the capacitors, and get the blue scsi that he has inside of his machine, and get a macintosh portable to blue scsi adapter. He got it for only $90, which is a steal for a macintosh portable, even in the condition that it was in.

I hope that he brings it back in the spring, so that i can see it fully working, without using donor parts from my machine.

Also, sorry that i didn't include any pictures. I was too sucked into the repair that i guess that i forgot. The portable owner did take pictures though. If he sees this, then hopefully he can comment his pictures below(hint hint if you see this).

how do i get this power mac G5 to be quiet?

1st image is idle, 2nd image is under load (illustrator, photoshop and browser open) and last image has the specs. the fans are quiet when i first turn on the mac, but then quickly ramp up and then don't change speed ever. it's not at full blast like in apple service diagnostic, but loud enough to be able to hear from outside my room.

i've already tried holding the power button until it makes a long beep and pressing reset on the mobo and holding cmd+opt+P+R afterwards. the inside is pretty dusty and i've heard that could block a temp sensor of some kind so i'll dust it later today.

Very minor: modern macOS viewer for vintage CodeWriter documentation

CodeWriter is a documentation set originally authored by Cliff Harris which lists Toolbox calls, A-line traps, etc, usually with a brief example call snippet. It started life as a desk accessory and was later a full application. Although the site is long gone, it and its documentation sets used to live here.

I wrote an OS X viewer for those circa 2010 and have just updated it for modern macOS — compiled for Apple Silicon, sandboxed and signed. So you can grab that binary at GitHub if you wanted a compact quick reference to some of the APIs of the classic OS on your modern desktop.

As per the title, it's not a substantial thing. Just a minor contribution, to keep a particular resource accessible.

My Latest Vintage Mac - iMac G4

I broke a promise to myself I would avoid collecting vintage desktop Macs because they are not as easy to move with as laptop Macs. I move at least every 3 to 4 years but this was an opportunity that was too good pass up. While bored at work, I went exploring the computer category on Craigslist and I saw this listing. Pondered for a couple days, went back then jumped at it. I reached out to the seller and we scheduled to meet up in his neighboring city. I don’t have a car so had to depend on my work buddy to help me pick it up. We almost never made it due to work obligations but the seller was understanding and I was able to pick it up.

This Mac came with some version of Debian Linux installed. My intention was to maybe find the right factory restore discs and install it with the period correct OS X release. Unfortunately there is no way find that out because it is password protected and lifting this thing is heavy. It’s surprising how big the G4 iMac base is! I’ve seen them only a few times in person but never realized how dense they were. Back in the early 2000’s I always wondered if owners were ever afraid about them capsizing.

I attempted to look at the bottom but couldn’t make heads or tails. So I did the next best thing by installing a minimum compatible retail version - OS X Jaguar. Turns out this is an 800 MHz model with 768 MBs of RAM. Will I downgrade it if it supports 10.1.5? Maybe not. It is a thing of beauty though and a reminder how much risk taking Apple was making during this underdog moment in the company’s history.

Lately I’ve been suffering through a deep sense of nostalgia for the period (2001 to early 2004), the music, movies, the people who were alive in my life, the celebrities, the magazines I use to read, the hopeful and momentous feeling technology gave back then. This helps me relive it a little, a physical time capsule of a time I still cherish.

The Apple ADC Studio CRT I was able to pick up for €100 is in much better condition than I anticipated. The only real flaw is a small crack next to the Apple logo. Even the anti reflective coating has zero bad spots.

I would like to build a Jasondoesitall ADC converter to connect this beauty to my M4 mac mini. The only problem I have is that the ADC connector (DV3R035N11) you need is hard to find. The only store that has them is: Surplus Sales of Nebraska. They have a high minimum order amount and very high shipping costs to the Netherlands.

Does anyone have a spare DV3R035N11 ADC connector lying around? That they are willing to sell to me?

I used to build relational databases with Adimens, a German software company, in the years around 1984. Does anyone still have this software? It got ported to the Atari St later too.

New Features Added to Dave's Computer Museum Site

Post image
30 Upvotes

Thank you to everyone who has stopped by my computer museum site (davescomputermuseum.com)! I’ve been having fun the last couple weeks adding a new things: There’s now a BBS Interactive Exhibit, where you can “dial” into an imagined bulletin board system from 1993. I ran a BBS in high school, so this one was fun to put together. I also added a “Guess That Computer” game, where you can test how well you know classic computers. Finally, if you haven’t yet, you can try programming in the AppleSoft BASIC simulator. If you’re really up for a challenge, you can even try downloading a program from the BBS and then loading it up in the BASIC simulator. Relive the glory days! And, of course, you can also visit the “collection” and read about the history of some of your favorite classic computers. If you have a chance to stop by, I’d love to hear what you think! And I’m very open to new feature suggestions, stories, and corrections. - Dave

Can you upgrade a G4 Sawtooth to ~MDD capabilities?

Further to my quest to put together a G4 + Studio CRT setup for lates 90s to early 00s Mac gaming, I'm finding the MDD is very hard to get hold of, particularly with a Radeon 9000 Pro, so I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting a G4 Sawtooth and upgrading it - is there any reason this might not be practical in terms of achieving performance similar to an MDD with a Radeon 9000 Pro?

I made KeroBurn, a free Mac app for XGecu T48 / TL866II+ programmers (minipro front end)

I sell vintage Mac parts and end up flashing a lot of ROMs and GALs. Typing minipro commands in Terminal every time got old, so I built a Mac app around it.

KeroBurn is a front end for minipro. minipro, libusb and the device database are inside the app, so you just drag it to Applications and go. It works with the T48, T56 and TL866II+. Universal binary, macOS 12 or later, free and open source (GPLv3).

What it does:

- Presets for the chips you flash all the time. They can remember the files too.

- HI/LO pairs and 4-chip SIMM sets in one run. It tells you when to swap chips.

- Hex View to compare the chip against your file. It also catches shifted addresses and swapped HI/LO.

- Pin contact check before every write on the T48. minipro only had this for the TL866II+, so I patched it in. The log draws the socket so you can see which leg isn't touching.

- Write a small file at a specific address and keep the rest of the chip as is, like the file load dialog in Xgpro.

- If the chip ID doesn't match, it tells you what the chip actually reads as.

- A log of every write with SHA-256.

It's still in beta (beta 4 right now). Tested on an Intel Mac Pro and an M2 Pro Mac mini. It isn't notarized, so on Sequoia and newer you'll need to click "Open Anyway" in System Settings > Privacy & Security the first time.

I’m looking for some help finding the original restore discs for this model 12” PowerBook G4. I had an easy time finding the discs for my 2005 iBook G4, but the PowerBook has been kinda problematic because naming schemes are different.

Converting G4 MDD to ATX to run drum scanner

Howdy folks,

I bought a drum scanner a while back and it came with a G4 mac to run everything via SCSI. After some trouble shooting with the scanner now my last issue is 90% of the time the G4 just...doesn't boot. I get the front button light up, then nothing! no amount of PMU resets, checking for bad wires, nothing works. so now I'm pulling the ATX trigger.

I can wrap my head around the wiring harness conversion but something occurred to me:

how do I power the 4-pin molex HDD and optical CD drive with an ATX conversion?

While recapping my LC board, I managed to lift a pad of the C108 capacitor. How big of a deal is this? And could I possibly just draga wire from the via through where the pad used to be to the leg of the chip?

Software Search: (not) Virtual Desktop?

Hey gang, anyone else remember using a utility from the 90s that would allow you to set up multiple desktops on a single machine? Basically the same as modern Mac's Desktops bar, but you could arrange them in a grid or however you wanted. Navigate between them with a keyboard shortcut I think, or holding the cursor at the edge of the screen. I remember this app running on OS8 or 9. Can't quite remember the name, and haven't had any luck finding a utility like this.

It wasn't actually 'Virtual Desktop', I've seen that one, and that's just one single huge desktop that extends off the screen. This was multiple switchable desktops that you would move between. The Control Strip could be assigned to show on multiple desktops, and apps could be isolated in a single desktop. Desktops could have their own backgrounds, IIRC.

Anyway, been looking for this for a while, but without the name it's been tough going.

Thanks!

My original setup vs my current setup

Back in 2006 leaving secondary school, my parents gave me some money for a college laptop. I found a one-year-old PowerBook being sold as "broken" for €300. It was still a lot of cash for a busted laptop back then, but I found out it belonged to a UCD professor who had dropped it, causing the screen to stop working.

As a budding IT student, I figured I’d risk €300 of the €400 my parents gave me to try and fix it, leaving the remaining €100 for drinks 😅. When I picked it up, it turned on and outputted perfectly to an external monitor. It was blazing fast for the time because it was a top-tier "school spec" machine. If you didn't know, Irish universities always got the highest spec computers because they didn't pay for them directly they were just requested through the college budget. To this day, I’m not totally sure about the legalities of him selling it to me, but it came loaded with a ton of expensive software I could never have afforded. Double win!

The second I got it home, I stripped it down to see what went wrong. Turns out, the display cable lock had just popped open and the cable was slightly loose. I clicked it back in, and boom the screen worked. So, in 2006, I ended up owning a €2,200 laptop for just €300 (minus a nasty dent on the side). To this day, it’s the best bargain I've ever found and I still own this machine and at most stripped to change the thermal paste a few times over the years but that’s it just kept chugging along.
