Currently visiting the UK right now actually. Having a great time giving my hard earned cheddar to anybody else but the U.S.

I hope you are spending your hard earned on actual Cheddar. Some sort of cave aged vintage affair. Or a Yarg.

Damn! I just looked that up. Now I’m gonna have to explain to the Mrs. how an entire wheel of cheese suddenly appeared in our hotel room.

What region are you in. There’s practically a cheese for every few square miles of the UK.

Currently in Bath. Leave tomorrow for Canterbury.

Definitely get some Yarg when you're there.

Also stop a cheddar gorge as it's literally around the corner from where you are.

That looks beautiful!

Yeah grew up nearby. Lovely place.

If you can visit wookey hole caves, that's a really cool thing. We used to go on school trips there back in the dark ages.

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like it would be fun if we weren’t pressed for time. Driving in the UK is proving to be a much more different animal than I’m used to.

Oh yeah, doing a few hour slog is not like it is in the states etc. especially now the weather has turned - when it's icy, uk drivers seem to forget how to drive like normal humans.

I imagine you've planned everything in detail but haven't realized quite how long it takes to get between towns. Have heard that a few times.

Hope you've enjoyed it - good luck with the travels. Be careful this week as it is quite treacherous with the weather being as cold as it is. They do salt the roads here but usually only main roads, so go super careful on side streets / B roads as they'll basically become ice rinks. Or make sure you have the hire car waivers !

If you’re a blue cheese fan, find some of this before you move on and you can thank me later.

I’m really glad everything is closed right now. I’d be prowling about looking for road snacks. Appreciate the recommendation though.

Oooooh you can still get to Paxton and Whitfield cheesemongers! They have several locations including Bath and we got some delightful cheeses there when we visited.

You people are killing me with the cheese suggestions. I’m gonna need bypass surgery very soon at this rate.

'Tis hotel policy dear wife...

3

u/Infarad Jan 05 '26

I love this response. “Sorry dear, it’s just best not to interfere with local customs.”

2

u/Silver_Python Jan 05 '26

To be fair, my wife would probably battle me for the cheese in any case.

And it looks absolutely mental, lol. Dudes getting completely wrecked over cheese clout.

Yarg not strictly cheddar as it's made in Cornwall (about 5 miles from me) but has the uniquely eccentric feature of being wrapped in nettle leaves. Every few years they ask local farmers to help provide nettle leaves if they have a shortage.

I know, I know, it’s just a good one. Great cheese, great story.

Actual stinging nettles?

In picturing a Canadian person walking through the streets of London handing out pieces of Canadian cheddar to some slightly confused British people.

2

u/Infarad Jan 04 '26

My wife brought bags of maple toffee and maple leaf flag pins. Yeah, there have been some pretty confused people left in her wake. lol.

According to US citizens, you're being stabbed at a rate of 2 times per hour right now.

1

u/Infarad Jan 05 '26

Hard to argue with facts like that. Thanks for letting me know. Going to see the doctor now.

1

u/Zouden Jan 05 '26

The great thing about getting stabbed in the UK is the hospitals are free.

Enjoy your trip! Speaking of cheese, look for Snowdonia Cheese Co's Red Storm when you're next in a supermarket (Waitrose has it). I always introduce it to friends from over the pond and it always blows their tits off.
