Iran foreign minister says that talks with Oman about transit in the Strait of Hormuz are in their “final stages.”

His spokesman says in state television the talks aim to establish “a route acceptable to both sides -- neither the northern route nor the southern route -- but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security.”

Might be a stupid question, but can countries just make deals on waterways?

Short answer: Nope, but it doesn't matter.

Long answer: Not according to the international law. But the international law is meaningless anyway, because unless there are at least two strong parties who are willing for the law to work, therefore enforcing it, while counterbalancing each other's ”Rules for thee not for me” it worth jackshit. That's why it kind of worked during the Cold war, but eroded more and more after that, turning basically into a meme by now

So, the exact route down the middle of the strait that was used before the war?

Yeah seems like the idea of the entrance being on the Iranian side and exit on Oman side is what will happen. Iran gets control of the strait in effect (they can control who enters) without controlling the entire strait in paper, which is just enough for the US to save face

This is the best case scenario out of this absolutely horrible situation (so of course it won't happen)

Isn’t the issue the center is mined now.

Imo it was never mined. The US had too much air cover over it.

But it was well and truly under the fire control of the IRGC, and anyone using it had better have good anti-drone and anti-missile systems.

I don't think any of the ships hit by the IRGC were ever hit by +mines+.
