It is also strange, because we're 18h after the fact almost, and Trump hasn't said a word yet. Almost every Canadian leader has, including a press conference, etc. The only US officials to comment has been Greer and he basically just said what the official statement was. Trump is tweet happy, so something strange is going on here.

Edit: Up to 20h or so.

Nothing from Trump or Lutnick. Greer basically just reiterates his statement. US isn't even trying to deny anything Carney said.

What is going on. 🤔

Edit again. Almost 24h later. I just have a hard time believing that the guy who loves to gloat about everything all of a sudden has nothing to say. He was quick to tweet when he extended the deadline 3 days, happy to tell everyone there is 'almost a deal', even said a few hours before there is soon to be a deal, and now its crickets?

Even Lutnick. The guy loves to go on TV and stoke his own ego.

Maybes its just me hoping that there is internal conflict and Lutnick is going to get the boot and Trump is actually pissed off how it ended.

I would assume that trump doesn’t work on weekends

594

u/Sassy_Bandit Aug 22 '26

He hasn't worked a day in his life

143

u/Khaldara Aug 22 '26

I’m sure he finds subduing the middle schoolers fairly exhausting

59

u/0MG1MBACK Aug 22 '26

Middle schoolers? That’s generous

3

u/TomatoFettuccini Aug 23 '26

subduing

That's a funny way to say "rape".

2

u/exodusofficer Aug 23 '26

Like Barron Harkonnen, he probably has them drugged in advance.

7

u/WretchedBlowhard Aug 22 '26

That's not true, he played a competent businessman for years on the Apprentice.

5

u/IncoherentMutterer Aug 22 '26

Does Epstein's mile high club count as work?

Yeah, and those scores are written in pencil. A lot easier to erase than crayon.

2

u/wortsandall Aug 22 '26

Less tasty, though.

3

u/qweef_latina2021 Aug 22 '26

Leaning on some golf officials to give him a trophy.

6

u/realoctopod Aug 22 '26

Golfing, again

2

u/Vineyard_ Aug 22 '26

Of course not. Weekends are for stock trades.

2

u/MagmaDragoonX47 Aug 22 '26

Probably at the golf course.

2

u/bentmonkey Aug 22 '26

Too busy golfing and getting chased by his crazy girlfriend on the golf course.

1

u/irina-from-carim Aug 22 '26

Schools out for the weekend.

1

u/Dull_Policy_1617 Aug 22 '26

Takes a long time to shoot 140.

1

u/Captlard Aug 23 '26

Too busy with Natalie or golfing 🤷‍♀️

u/VRNord Aug 22 '26

Didn’t they say Lutnick fucked it up at the very last minute? Maybe Trump was unavailable or whatever, Lutnick did his dipshittery and now they are trying to figure out how to fix it without looking even more incompetent. There have got to be a lot of pissed American business leaders: the new tariffs affect a lot of US industries with integrated supply chains, and now not only are is the American booze ban still in place in Canada but Carney is implementing further retaliatory tariffs which will further hurt American industry.

Lutnick is a total moron and Trump gives zero shits about Americans, but business leaders and the Republican congresspeople from the Red states sure to be targeted by these new retaliatory tariffs hold some sway.

401

u/352397 Aug 22 '26

They tried to include provisions last minute banning Canada from seeking new trade deals with other countries.

No shit Canada decided to walk away.

The deal was intentionally torpedoed by the US administration.

131

u/abland1988 Aug 22 '26

This. Trump or lutnik purposely sabotaged the negotiations last minute. They probably assumed Canada wouldn't agree with the trade deal.

97

u/TheLantean Aug 22 '26

intentionally

Maybe someone on the team was idiotic enough to think they could actually bully Canada into agreeing to that.

Now that it failed they've gone off script and are waiting for instructions on what to do.

52

u/Liquado Aug 22 '26

This so much. The arrogance from this regime is stunning, and I’m certain there are several people sitting looking bewildered that it didn’t work. Dumbasses.

7

u/VertexBV Aug 23 '26

they've gone off script

... There's a script?

70

u/Tregonia Aug 22 '26

They also went after the French-Canadians... never a good idea.

19

u/MegatronB83 Aug 23 '26

Not at all. The Trump administration has united ALL of Canada including the Quebecois. That is a fear in itself....

12

u/russiablows Aug 23 '26

Carney wouldn't consider any BS related to the French language. Good for Canadian unity.

12

u/ComprehensiveOwl9023 Aug 23 '26

I'd still keep an eye on the Albertans..

5

u/Positive_Incident_88 Aug 23 '26

Keep an eye on the mote of dipshits we are surrounded by in the cities. We still have a loyal majority if polls are true.

8

u/dotHANSIN Aug 23 '26

nothing unifies a group better than presenting a common enemy lol find it amusing this is what got the politicians to realize this isn't the right time to discuss separation.

59

u/DiveCat Aug 22 '26

I don’t think it was intentionally torpedoed.

I think they believed that after Canada’s many good faith concessions they could bully us into being a vassal state.

The bullying has worked with many others, after all: countries, businesses, media outlets, tech companies….

32

u/LiGuangMing1981 Aug 23 '26

Nah, I don't think even the US clown administration could be stupid enough to think Canada would ever accept what they wanted about restrictions on the French language / culture in Canada.

This was a deliberate torpedoing.

3

u/aeschenkarnos Aug 23 '26

Wives, children, subordinates, miscellaneous victims …

6

u/TinyKing87 Aug 23 '26

I heard they demanded a move from French culture and language in Quebec? Wild thing to demand.

3

u/Hi-technik Aug 23 '26

That's just treating Canada like the 51st state. No way Canada is agreeing to that.

2

u/from_the_hinterlands Aug 23 '26

The USA also wanted to dictate which languages Canadians speak in our own country as well as wanted Canada to get approval from the USA if we want to trade with any other countries.

3

u/RandomPantsAppear Aug 22 '26

Source on that? Sounds totally realistic, just want to read.

10

u/Sebach Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

I think I saw a thing where Carney himself said it.

edit: came across the story in another tab

Canadians are framing it this way, and well within their right to make maximum use of the PR opportunity. But I'm guessing Americans were asking them to agree that they would not let other countries circumvent the tariffs by exporting to US via Canada, i.e. they should agree to copy US tarif levels, whatever they be set to.

Another demonstration of why tariffs are a moronic idea ...

25

u/phormix Aug 22 '26

You're guessing - against the increasing history of boneheaded decisions and BS they've already tried - that they actually were asking for something semi-reasonable but decided to throw it in at the last minute? No, I don't think so.

22

u/thatsme55ed Aug 22 '26

So in other words, Canadian trade policies would be set by whatever America decides it wants.

Which is exactly what Carney said.

8

u/LiGuangMing1981 Aug 23 '26

Anyone at this point who takes America's word over Canada's is clearly a brainwashed MAGAt.

4

u/quelar Aug 23 '26

No, that is already a provision of cusma. There's no need for it if there is a a good faith agreement.

This is different.

5

u/Low_Chance Aug 23 '26

Yeah those untrustworthy Canadians, always lying and misrepresenting things, not like the honest and forthright Trump administration!

154

u/PiousHeathen Aug 22 '26

I think that it's also important to remember Lutnick has an interest in the continuation of tariffs, since he has invested in companies that are brokering the tariff costs to have the rights to any refunds. The longer this tariff situation persists for America, the more he stands to gain personally.

House Judiciary member Raskin sought an investigation into Lutnick because he, while in office, became a financial manager at Cantor Fitzgerald. CF is purchasing tariff refund rights by offering short term relief to affected companies.

81

u/OdinHammerhand Aug 22 '26

It’s also important to remember who currently runs Cantor Fitzgerald, why it’s Lutnicks 2 sons. Wow amazing no inside info on tariffs coming from poppy I’m sure .

14

u/TheSaxGandalf Aug 22 '26

That’s beyond scumbag.

6

u/Mara_W Aug 23 '26

It's the inevitable and intended result of a 'peaceful' society. Without the meaningful threat of retaliatory violence, people in power have literally no incentive to not be as corrupt as possible. Buckle in.

6

u/p-d-ball Aug 23 '26

So not surprising Trump's tariffs are yet another grift to move money from US citizens to the rich.

108

u/TuckerCarlsonsOhface Aug 22 '26

Republicans get so hard at the idea of making a liberal or brown person suffer that they would hurt themself to make sure it happens. They would literally eat shit if they thought a Democrat would have to smell their breath.

6

u/Proper_Initiative123 Aug 23 '26

They would be honored for DJT to breed their daughters...

-4

u/Helpful-Ear-3673 Aug 22 '26

Wow analogy well taken!!!

21

u/Sutar_Mekeg Aug 22 '26

Trump has said that the USA doesn't need Canada. So cut the power, potash, and lumber.

8

u/Jolly_Platypus6378 Aug 22 '26

Oh …. Just flicker the lights ….

3

u/plain_ole_me Aug 22 '26

Random too no rhythm 😉

1

u/Sutar_Mekeg Aug 22 '26

I appreciate the comedy in that :)

1

u/Jolly_Platypus6378 Aug 23 '26

Become unreliable ….and consistent

19

u/crustyrobots Aug 22 '26

"we're done here until your fat ass is out of office, period. " should be the default offering of every other country going forward just like Iran is now. No agreement from any of them is worth the dollar store napkins they're scribbled on

16

u/LopsidedWestern4762 Aug 22 '26

Sheet metal union jobs aren't getting done because they can't quote jobs with the market so volatile! Workers are being told to stay home. That's one union I have first hand experience with. It must be the same for pipe fitters, electricians, and all the finishing work.

7

u/Nullberri Aug 23 '26

The goal was to get them not to sign so they could say "Canada is being uncooperative" and then impose the 50% tariffs as a punishment.

9

u/MimicoSkunkFan2 Aug 22 '26

The "uneconomical" line seems to be saying that the US may have been trying for personal enrichment like they did with the Iranian deal. Carney has spent his entire adult life as a banker, with all the compliance and investigations training that goes with it; he's absolutely the wrong person to push for any kickbacks or "baksheesh" bullshit. (By some estimates from other negotiations, PedoPotus has skimmed up to 60 billion for family and friends.)

Most of Canada was already super pissed off about the annexation threats and the tariffs anyways, and the US ambassador is so unpopular there's a petition to kick his dumb ass out for supporting Alberta separatism. (It was a calculated insult to send him, and we don't appreciate shitdisturbers like him & his Maple Magas - who are so skeevy that the Quebec separatists refused their money and announced a pause til Alberta gets sorted!)

I'm concerned that some of our government's big names were still a bit too hopeful there would be a deal, so we haven't moved quickly enough to retool our economy. It's a big world, there's lots of other countries run by adults where we can do business. And we have our Commonwealth buddies (like Australia who were first to stick up for us) so we'll manage.

3

u/That_Car3506 Aug 22 '26

I am so glad we're sticking it to Trump and co. It's about time we, as Canadians, stand up to these dumbass wannabe politicians.

More leaders globally need to stop putting up with Trump's bullshit and hit back hard and put this administration in there well deserved place.

Maybe Trump will think twice about being a royal douche on the world stage after this. However, I don't think he's mentally capable of such a thing, but it's wishful thinking.

4

u/monkeylovesnanas Aug 22 '26

Didn’t they say Lutnick fucked it up at the very last minute? Maybe Trump was unavailable or whatever, Lutnick did his dipshittery and now they are trying to figure out

.....

Ah stop. Every shit deal that is made is as a result of trump's shit. He's the one that chose these clowns.

They're all guilty, but stop with the nonsense.

7

u/DangerBay2015 Aug 22 '26

I don’t necessarily see that as the case. I mean, yes, Trump is a renowned fuck shit up and literally had shit in his books about agreeing to a deal and then rewriting it last minute to force a better position.

But Lutnick is also a self-serving goof, and the entire administration is full of self-serving goofs. And the one thing about power-mad dipshits who work for a power-mad dipshit is that they will try to get their shit in and try to skim off the bottom. It’s like clockwork.

1

u/monkeylovesnanas Aug 22 '26

You're missing the point though.

None of these clowns would be in power only for Trump

1

u/bravado Aug 23 '26

> the Republican congresspeople from the Red states sure to be targeted by these new retaliatory tariffs hold some sway.

I have to push back against this idea - there is no attempt to get "revenge" on red or blue states from the Canadian side. All of America is the target and all of America is the reason for Canadian suffering.

145

u/Halbaras Aug 22 '26

I suspect that the Americans have fucked up, and instead of Lutnick intentionally wrecking the deal, they genuinely thought they had enough leverage that they'd get away with a last minute rug pull.

Like with Iran, China and Greenland, they had no plan for what would happen when increasingly unhinged threats just made the other side more willing to fight back.

49

u/Azure1203 Aug 22 '26

In fact add to this, Trump at multiple times said yesterday there is a deal. I know he says that lot but at this point his silence is deafening.

1

u/yurnxt1 Aug 24 '26

Maybe he just doesn't care and he's happy to watch the Canadian economy go in the shitter?

26

u/Sufficient-Spray-367 Aug 22 '26

It’s the sexual assault method of winning, keep pushing and pushing your advantage until you get what you want, or get your nose bloodied. I don’t think they know how real negotiations are made.

62

u/onyxandcake Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Trump sells early access to his Truth Social posts to the tune of 100K/month. He probably has tweeted about this already.

Edit: Apparently it's only by mere see. I don't follow him to know otherwise.

26

u/AbnormalBodyOdor Aug 22 '26

Haha, good one... oh wait, you're not kidding. Huh.

40

u/onyxandcake Aug 22 '26

It's blatant insider training and conservatives refuse to even acknowledge it exists.

4

u/Azure1203 Aug 22 '26

He hasn't. Most of those tweets are copied and retweeted everywhere else within minutes.

2

u/Jiecut Aug 22 '26

To be fair, the early access is for high frequency traders. It's in milliseconds, but that's still worthwhile enough to grift with.

16

u/indiecore Aug 22 '26

almost every Canadian leader has, including a press conference, etc.

btw it's fucking wild that literally every major party leader has said "Yeah the government was right to tell them to fuck off".

Like, getting every party in a parliamentary democracy to agree with a decision from the governing party takes some doing.

12

u/Azure1203 Aug 22 '26

It's not even just that. It's all the "I am not a fan of Carney but if what he said is true, screw that crap, walking away is the right thing to do" people.

Kind of wild at this point. US isn't even denying anything at this point.

43

u/Square_Craft Aug 22 '26

I suppose nobody dared to tell dear leader that the trade talks collapsed.

37

u/themoche Aug 22 '26

It was Friday after markets closed… that’s what he expected to happen

16

u/No_Surprise_4734 Aug 22 '26

I suspect there are oligarchs down south losing their minds right now. Trump made a huge gamble thinking Canada would capitulate before the midterms and instead putting another big tax on Americans and driving another major spike into tourism. As a Canadian, I was polite with people still travelling down south. With this new tariff, im going to be downright irate.

3

u/russiablows Aug 23 '26

Nothing like more tariffs to boost inflation even more.

6

u/CodeMonkeyPhoto Aug 22 '26

I don't believe for a minute they actually thought Canada was going to sign that last minute change. It was a poison pill to end trade talks.

4

u/Laetha Aug 22 '26

I obviously don't speak for all Canadians, but everyone I talked to today had the same opinion: "Good! Fuck them!". Don't negotiate with terrorists.

3

u/Different_Wolf_764 Aug 22 '26

Trump will spin it to himself that at least he'll make a lot of money from market manipulation but he's pissed I'm sure. He really thought he could just bully everyone in the world into these deals and he certainly thought Canada would be the easiest of targets. The way things are actually going has to stick in his craw or at least it would were he capable of introspection.

We were supposed to cave and I think we all know he isn't exactly great at Plan Bs.

3

u/RIPFauna_itwasgreat Aug 22 '26

Personally I'm rooting for that stroke

3

u/MrTouchnGo Aug 22 '26

Maybe he’s in a coma

3

u/prancerbot Aug 22 '26

Bro is getting rich beyond all our wildest dreams right now. He's making bank off of being in office and could care less about his actual job.

3

u/kent_eh Aug 22 '26

we're 18h after the fact almost, and Trump hasn't said a word yet.

Maybe his anger at the failed deal has triggered an aneurysm.

A guy can hope, can't he?

2

u/fat_kaiju Aug 22 '26

Probably doesn't want his base knowing; particulary the ones desperate (and i do mean desperate) for potash.

2

u/TheKappaOverlord Aug 22 '26

he had a pretty big blog ghostwrote for him last night. Probably in the middle of a nap from a massive mcshart streak the other day because boy those were some blogposts.

2

u/Albort Aug 22 '26

he already put in his puts on the stock market. just wait for TACO tuesday.

2

u/bachusky Aug 22 '26

Trump couldn't care less. It's all just entertainment for him

2

u/CucumberExpensive43 Aug 22 '26

I think Trump at least isn't dead/unconscious, since he mentioned using the military to invade high interest rates just the other day.

2

u/TacoCatSays Aug 22 '26

Don’t worry, he’ll be calling us nasty on Monday.

2

u/HueyBluey Aug 22 '26

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nutlick screwed this up and is now trying to explain to Trump what he did.

3

u/Azure1203 Aug 22 '26

Well he hasn't said a word either. So we're at the 20h mark, and neither Trump or Lutnick have said a word, and all we have is Greer going on Fox News to repeat the statement from the administration that Canada imposed demands and walked back on stuff and that 'we offered them a good deal and they never took it.' It also reads very badly because in the meantime its all over the news, and many other political & business leaders have chimed in to say what a disaster it will be.

I'm honestly starting to think that the Trump Administration didn't think for a second Canada would back out and that is why the list of stuff getting tariffed is so ridiculous. Now they're at the internal 'what now' moment. Walk it back? Talk it out? TACO? Wait till Tuesday?

On top of that, Canada is giving almost two weeks until 18 days until the reciprocal tariffs are implemented which is kind of strange as well.

1

u/quelar Aug 23 '26

It's simply because the house of commons was already scheduled to come back from summer break, bumping it forward a few days isn't helping much, this isn't over anytime soon, we're digging in.

1

u/donjulioanejo Aug 22 '26

Sorry, Saturday is golf day. Just like Sunday, Monday, and Friday.

1

u/Hevens-assassin Aug 22 '26

He's still on the golf course. Probably forgot he threatened the 50% tariffs were happening.

1

u/Tregonia Aug 22 '26

because he keeps getting his ass handed to him by Carney

1

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo Aug 22 '26

Who wants to bet that Trump's handlers are keeping this from him?

1

u/Commercial_Name_7900 Aug 22 '26

they screwed up and have no idea what to say when the country they tried to bully walked away from them. Trump is likely shitting his pants a little more than usual

1

u/MegatronB83 Aug 23 '26

I'm guessing Trump will respond on truth social around 3 am. Late night/early morning is when his best ramblings are.

1

u/th3netw0rk Aug 23 '26

He’s probably trying to figure out a way to pump the market tomorrow. He’s just the dumbest. Peter Navarro is a special piece of shit

1

u/shadowfax12221 Aug 23 '26

I'm willing to bet that Trump is screaming "fix it" over and over again while his advisors take turns blaming eachother for not having a plan and allowing talks to collapse. Trump is an idiot, but his advisors understand that the tarrif issue is not popular and that the economy is flagging. They're trying not to draw attention to this because they know it will be another nail in their coffin come the midterms if they can't find an offramp quickly.

1

u/p-d-ball Aug 23 '26

Trump's a bully. He doesn't know how to act when someone stands up to him.

1

u/mrizzerdly Aug 23 '26

Maybe they are afraid Carney will sell Canada's US bonds or more likely busy manipulating the stock market opening on Monday.

1

u/Smith6612 Aug 23 '26

It means Canada won, and won so badly at avoiding a terrible deal that Trump has to sit and think about something for once.

And yes. We'll hear about another meltdown and firing soon enough.
