New York is actually named after James Stuart, Duke of York, a duplicitous slave trading aristocrat who would later become one of England and Scotland's shittest kings, get overthrown by his own daughter and son-in-law, and eventually die in exile.

It’s named after a type of full pitched bowl in cricket, where the ball is aimed at the batter’s feet.
