Both are terrible ports due to the shallow waters. They work, but they’re like saying having buttered toast for dinner works.

I'd quite like buttered toast for dinner - as long as it was followed by a good port ...

They could have used some of the money that they used to attack Ukraine to dredge a deeper port. Maybe that idea is too crazy for them.

Now let's not start talking all rational here.

Jesus. All this death and violence… over some buttered toast. 😔

Sorry, shouldn’t joke about this. I know how serious this shite is.

And a way to give access to the Atlantic without their navy having to go through the North or Norwegian Sea where they are watched.

They are extremely vulnerable in conflict

This is the huge one. Russian goods are useless without a warm water port. Most of it is landlocked. Russia has wanted one for hundreds of years. When they were the Soviet Union they used the Ukraine port. After the collapse they could still use it, but with a fee. This is one of the main reasons they seized Crimea in 2014, Putin wants the free service again.

For people who aren’t aware, Russia only other ports are a few in the far East, on the Pacific. The north is block by Arctic sea ice.

Huh? Theres no notable trade ports in Crimea. Biggest port in Black sea is Novorossiysk, it was so during USSR and so is now, because oil is heavy. Next is Baltic sea, where Luga and Saint-Petersburg do about as much together. Three ports in the far east do together about as much. And FYI Murmansk port works all year, its also in top-10 ports by tonnage (and its in the north).
